continue working on a research/intervention study and publish some papers.
im currently working on a masters thesis which i plan on abbreviating and publishing this spring. I am excited to begin medical school, but part of me thinks I need some time to relax before I have to study hard core.

do you think that is a bad idea? i've read on here that some tx schools don't particularly like reapplicants, but im not sure if that is really true. If I could, I might choose to defer... but most TX schools (except UTSW) dont let students defer.

Regarding TC, yum yum. I used to go there all the time during undergrad. Queso and torillas at 2 am. I miss that, but I DONT miss all the weight that I gained during undergrad.

For those of you who don't know, this IS my year off. I did not apply to medical school last year--I simply wasn't ready and wasn't 100% sure that I wanted to become a doctor. I'm so glad that I waited and that I have this year off. I'm out in the work world, but still taking classes (only one) and doing research on the UT campus. Working has made me realize how NOT READY I am to make it out there in the real world. The pure monotony of going to work everyday and performing mundane tasks isn't nearly as exciting as I thought it would be. I'm so thrilled to be in school again next year! Okay, I'm such a nerd, nerd, nerd....but doctors are nerdy right?

Okay, I'll be quiet now....off to lunch! 😉

3 taco combo, chicken soft. pineapple chipotle salsa.

blech on the pineapple....

library is your favorite word? hmmm, okay. 🙂 I can think of better ones...

Love pineapple salsa! 😍 Seabass can back me up on this one. 😀

Ugh. I think I've come down with the creeping crud. Off to bed with me. 😴

mmmm....Pineapple and Canadian bacon pizza sounds real good right about now.....just finished midterms!!! 😎

Goodluck LibraryRat!!! I'm pullin for ya too 😀 😀

Not to distract from the food talk, but did anybody hear of or apply for Teach for America? My friend was looking into it and it sounds really interesting. You basically teach for 2 years in a rural or underserved area and get paid a teacher's salary. At the end of that time, you get a bunch more money to pay off loans or pay for grad school. Best of all, med schools will defer you if you get in. The competition is real steep though. Thoughts?

I was actually in an MCAT prep course with someone who was in Teach for America. She tought in a Houston inner city school and was really enjoying it. Its an excellent interim job as long as teaching is really what you want to do during that time--which isn't necessarily a fit for everyone. Of course there are the frustrations that come along with all these type of programs, but she found it very rewarding.

Do invites come on certain days or is it just whenever? I know a few people who all got invites from UTH on Fridays at around 9 AM

My roommate from freshman year is currently doing Teach for America in Los Angeles....she was an education major at UT and plans to teach for her lifetime career. My boyfriend also looked into this as an "interim career" before going to med school. It's a really awesome program, but takes a very special and patient person to do it well.

DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- A judge threw a party complete with balloons, streamers and a cake to welcome a former fugitive back to her court -- and sentence him to life in prison.

"You just made my day when I heard you had finally come home," Criminal Courts Judge Faith Johnson told Billy Wayne Williams, who had been convicted in absentia of aggravated assault after he disappeared a year ago. "We're so excited to see you, we're throwing a party for you."

Williams, 53, who has a criminal record dating to the 1980s, was accused of choking his girlfriend until she passed out. He failed to appear for his trial last November and was captured Thursday at a gas station in suburban Arlington.

Before he was brought into the courtroom on Monday, the judge directed staff members as they placed balloons and streamers around the courtroom. A colorful cake was decorated with his name and one candle to signify the year he spent on the lam.

"It seems like everyone wants to have a party, and it's fun for you people, but not for me," Williams told reporters as he was led away in handcuffs.

Seana Willing, executive director of the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct, said she found the incident troubling. "It's the kind of thing I look at and scratch my head and wonder, `What was she thinking?"' Willing said.

She questioned whether the party violated standards of decorum and impartiality.

"The whole purpose of it was to mock him, to make him feel bad. I guess she could have put him in the stockade, in the pillory, in front of the town square and let people mock him," Willing said.

She said Johnson had never been disciplined by the regulatory agency.

Calls to the judge's office were not immediately returned Tuesday.

Trent Touchstone, a supervisory deputy U.S. marshal, said Johnson took a special interest in Williams' case after he jumped bail that she had set following the 2002 assault.

"Put yourself in her position," Touchstone said. "She's going through a trial with a jury, with defense attorneys, with prosecutors and rolling along and one day the defendant decides not to show up, and everything comes to a screeching halt."

Hey guys,

I finally heard from A&M! I'm going to be interviewing on 11/11. Anybody else going to be there on that day? (I got the email yesterday afternoon at 3 pm, in case someone is wondering about timing of email)

I also RSVPed for the Tech reception on November 3rd in Grapvine, Texas (near Dallas).

Later 😎

Hey everyone. I wanted to share an interesting tidbit of info that one of my interviewers at A&M gave me. They use some sort of tool (Barron's something) that allows schools to see how competitive your undergraduate school is...by that I mean how much the adcom should value your As and Bs at School X. Interesting :meanie: ....oh, and for all you Longhorns, he said that UT is a great school. (I'm sure other TX schools are good too, he just said that cuz I am a UT grad)

Hey guys, one quick question. I received my paper notification in the mail yesterday from TMDSAS saying that my application had been sent to the medical schools yet in the top right corner there still wasn't a date for verification. Now, when I check the status of my documents online it says it has been sent to the schools but again there is no verification date at the top. I'm wondering if this is normal?

Thanks,
Lance

Couple of questions for you folks. First, with Tech interviews, is there much difference between interviewing in Lubbock or in El Paso? Which do you think is better?

Second, how long after you were processed did it take you to hear back from San Antonio, and UTMB? I tried searching for this info, but didn't have any luck.

Well, take care everyone

AJ

I think that as long as you have a date listed next to "E. Initial Processing Date - sent to schools(s)," you've got nothing to worry about.

AJ

***Edit*** I also just realized that if you received the paper confirmation, your application has been officially processed and has been sent to schools, so I think that everything should be fine with your application. The good news of interview invites will arrive soon, good luck!

San Antonio took its sweet ole time. According to the admissions dean, they really unpack your application and consider everything before granting you an interview, and stressed very strongly that if all you had are high GPAs and high MCATs that it was not enough.

UTMB was also slow, but I found it to be faster than SA.

Thanks ajnak182 for clearing that up for me. I guess there is never enough waiting in this whole application process.

I heard from San Antonio about 2-3 weeks after I was processed (via snail mail only)

I heard from UTMB about 3-4 weeks after I was processed (via snail mail only)

Check out the first page of this thread, EvoDevo has some good info. posted for us TMDSAS applicants! 👍

EDIT: About the Tech interview and El Paso vs Lubbock--I am not sure about this one....If you can't find out a difference, my suggestion would be to goto whichever fits your schedule best (I chose the date that allowed me to skip the least amount of class). I think El Paso is on Fridays and Lubbock is on Wednesdays? 😕

Good luck! :luck:

Thanks tx, you're right with the days, sharp memory. I think I'm just going to schedule the interview based on cheapness of flights, as I'm getting a bit light in the moneybag region. I'm afraid that if I don't land a job soon, you'll find me on your doorstep either delivering Pizza Hut or stealing your newspaper and selling it to your neighbor. Late

No problem! Cheap is always good--this process is consuming us all in many different ways....

Only 96 days, 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 30 seconds left! (I'm not crazy, I got this from the countdown site! )

Regarding SA, as someone who has a close friend on the selection committe and who has spent a significant amount of time with Dr. J- UTHSCSA is very selective about who they interview. Your entire application is reviewed by a selection member and then discussed by the committe to determine if an interview is granted. This is why someone with a 25 will interview there but someone with a 35 wont.

After interviews, your evals from the interviewees goe into the file, then the whole file is reviewed again, in total, and resummarized to get a rank list.

Opinions or thoughts from anyone who interviewed at Tech? I've got a really tight schedule, and I'm trying to decide if I can even fit it in.

Maybe it's just me, but I would think it would be better for them to hold off on the "touchy-feely" aspect of admissions until after the interview...

the more schools you interview at, the more schools you can rank. you won't care if you match somewhere, but imagine not matching. I know you come from far away, but you'll kick yourself for not going if things don't work out so well on match day...

its been 2 yrs since I was there but I left with the impression that Tech deserves a lot more respect than it gets and its unfortunate its location brings it down in the eyes of pre-meds. I ended up ranking it very highly.

I remember you being older and I think married but I'm not sure about kids. the SDN member thackl is a MS1 there right now so you might want to send him a pm. he did a lot of research on cost of living and schools and such and decided Lubock was the best place for him with his kids.

So, is a later interview (December, January) always worse? I just can't understand why UTHSCSA doesn't like me....it's really getting to my self-esteem, especially since I was interested in interviewing there.

You know this whole thing really erks me....some schools love me, some schools don't even want to gimme a chance! Sorry I'm just confused and venting at 7:30 this morning! 🙁

Thanks a lot for the info! I'll bounce a message off of thatkl and see what he/she says. Interviewing and then deciding would be a much better option than skipping an interview and then kicking myself for a year (or longer).

The first time I interviewed at San Antonio I was in the last interview of the year. (They don't interview in January) I know someone from that group who was accepted. Remember they are non rolling.

AsianDoc:

Sometimes schools just don't like us. It happens. One can't be loved everywhere, hon, though I know why you especially want to go there. But try not to get too upset, because:

1. it ain't over till it's over.
2. even if it turns out that SA doesn't interview you, remember that not every school will like all of us. It happens but don't let it affect your self-esteem. Rejection is the lot of the applicant (MS, residency, fellowship, etc). 😉

I hear ya AsianDoc. UTSW doesn't seem to "like" me either 🙁 I'm starting to get over it, but still hoping in the back of my mind that I get a late interview! 😎

Keep the faith! 👍
