im currently working on a masters thesis which i plan on abbreviating and publishing this spring. I am excited to begin medical school, but part of me thinks I need some time to relax before I have to study hard core.
do you think that is a bad idea? i've read on here that some tx schools don't particularly like reapplicants, but im not sure if that is really true. If I could, I might choose to defer... but most TX schools (except UTSW) dont let students defer.
Regarding TC, yum yum. I used to go there all the time during undergrad. Queso and torillas at 2 am. I miss that, but I DONT miss all the weight that I gained during undergrad.

GutsyGal said:Not to distract from the food talk, but did anybody hear of or apply for Teach for America? My friend was looking into it and it sounds really interesting. You basically teach for 2 years in a rural or underserved area and get paid a teacher's salary. At the end of that time, you get a bunch more money to pay off loans or pay for grad school. Best of all, med schools will defer you if you get in. The competition is real steep though. Thoughts?

I finally heard from A&M! I'm going to be interviewing on 11/11. Anybody else going to be there on that day? (I got the email yesterday afternoon at 3 pm, in case someone is wondering about timing of email)
I also RSVPed for the Tech reception on November 3rd in Grapvine, Texas (near Dallas).

LanceP97 said:Hey guys, one quick question. I received my paper notification in the mail yesterday from TMDSAS saying that my application had been sent to the medical schools yet in the top right corner there still wasn't a date for verification. Now, when I check the status of my documents online it says it has been sent to the schools but again there is no verification date at the top. I'm wondering if this is normal?
Thanks,
Lance

Second, how long after you were processed did it take you to hear back from San Antonio, and UTMB? I tried searching for this info, but didn't have any luck.
Well, take care everyone

aprilshyla said:San Antonio took its sweet ole time. According to the admissions dean, they really unpack your application and consider everything before granting you an interview, and stressed very strongly that if all you had are high GPAs and high MCATs that it was not enough.
UTMB was also slow, but I found it to be faster than SA.

Check out the first page of this thread, EvoDevo has some good info. posted for us TMDSAS applicants! 👍
EDIT: About the Tech interview and El Paso vs Lubbock--I am not sure about this one....If you can't find out a difference, my suggestion would be to goto whichever fits your schedule best (I chose the date that allowed me to skip the least amount of class). I think El Paso is on Fridays and Lubbock is on Wednesdays? 😕
Good luck!![]()

ajnak182 said:Thanks tx, you're right with the days, sharp memory. I think I'm just going to schedule the interview based on cheapness of flights, as I'm getting a bit light in the moneybag region. I'm afraid that if I don't land a job soon, you'll find me on your doorstep either delivering Pizza Hut or stealing your newspaper and selling it to your neighbor. Late

Maybe it's just me, but I would think it would be better for them to hold off on the "touchy-feely" aspect of admissions until after the interview...roja said:Regarding SA, as someone who has a close friend on the selection committe and who has spent a significant amount of time with Dr. J- UTHSCSA is very selective about who they interview. Your entire application is reviewed by a selection member and then discussed by the committe to determine if an interview is granted. This is why someone with a 25 will interview there but someone with a 35 wont.
After interviews, your evals from the interviewees goe into the file, then the whole file is reviewed again, in total, and resummarized to get a rank list.
the more schools you interview at, the more schools you can rank. you won't care if you match somewhere, but imagine not matching. I know you come from far away, but you'll kick yourself for not going if things don't work out so well on match day...eralza said:Opinions or thoughts from anyone who interviewed at Tech? I've got a really tight schedule, and I'm trying to decide if I can even fit it in.

Thanks a lot for the info! I'll bounce a message off of thatkl and see what he/she says. Interviewing and then deciding would be a much better option than skipping an interview and then kicking myself for a year (or longer).::Seabass:: said:the more schools you interview at, the more schools you can rank. you won't care if you match somewhere, but imagine not matching. its been 2 yrs since I was there but I left with the impression that Tech deserves a lot more respect than it gets and its unfortunate its location brings it down in the eyes of pre-meds. I ended up ranking it very highly.
I remember you being older and I think married but I'm not sure about kids. the SDN member thackl is a MS1 there right now so you might want to send him a pm. he did a lot of research on cost of living and schools and such and decided Lubock was the best place for him with his kids.
The first time I interviewed at San Antonio I was in the last interview of the year. (They don't interview in January) I know someone from that group who was accepted. Remember they are non rolling.AsianDoc816 said:So, is a later interview (December, January) always worse? You know this whole thing really erks me....some schools love me, some schools don't even want to gimme a chance! Sorry I'm just confused and venting at 7:30 this morning! 🙁

Sometimes schools just don't like us. It happens. One can't be loved everywhere, hon, though I know why you especially want to go there. But try not to get too upset, because:
1. it ain't over till it's over.
2. even if it turns out that SA doesn't interview you, remember that not every school will like all of us. It happens but don't let it affect your self-esteem. Rejection is the lot of the applicant (MS, residency, fellowship, etc). 😉
