Hey, I found a deal on Southwest for $168 roundtrip. I'm flying out of Houston on 11/2 then I will leave Lubbock around 6pm on 11/3. I got some internet fare, so checkout their website. 👍

Hey, I bought it yesterday so it's quite possible the fare went up. I bought it through the Southwest Airlines website. It's was some internet special for 73 bucks each way. I checked other sites, but didn't find anything, so I went ahead and purchased my ticket.

I don't know if anyone cares, but after 52 days of waiting, I have finally been processed by TMDSAS. They told me they send out applications on Friday, so my application should be at the schools no later than Wednesday.

I am starting to get excited. I have done everything I could to get my application where it needs to be, and now the waiting games begins. I just hope I hear something from someone soon.

Let me emphasize that again: they are completely separate and often don't even talk to each other. So I could totally see your friend getting in with the 3.3. 🙂

Yep, you're exactly right.

I should have mentioned that, since he likes to point out the separation between the two schools. Still, he just got put on the adcom for MD/PhD, so I don't know if I would be scared or not if he were judging my appl (luckily, he's not 🙂 ) - I mean, you should see him try to titrate... he starts whiffing the 10M HCl right from the bottle! Makes you realize intelligence only gets you so far... and that there's hope for the rest of us.

A note about Baylor....I've been trying to figure this school out for nearly 4 years. It seems to me that Baylor selects some of the top students in Texas (and other states as well). Yes, they defintely like well-roundedness. But that's well-roundedness with high GPAs and MCATs too. Therefore, it's sorta unlikely that you could get in without outstanding EC's and outstanding stats as well. Baylor seems to like people who have a passion about something that sets them apart--whether it be working at NASA, learning Japanese, taking a multitude of liberal arts classes, or having traveled around the world for a few years before applying to med school. Granted, not all Baylor students fit this picture, but I think that at least 50-60% do. I really love this school.....hope I get a chance to interview there.

Yeah, you have a good point about not being able to pin them down. When I was in HS I knew a Baylor student (she used to work at the same place I did), who was perfectly candid about her low 20s score. She later stayed there for a very competitive residency. In fact, one of her fellow students got so pissed that she got in with such a low MCAT, that he went to the Dean to complain (and was basically told to stfu).

She claims she got in because her essays/ interviews were so good and because they were really impressed with the fact that she'd work as a museum director before applying. Now, I totally think this was luck and extreme chances, but still...she is living proof.

And, then again, a friend of mine, whose mom was on admissions there and who had a 3.8/ over 30 MCAT was snubbed because her interview went badly (her mom was "nice" enough to sneak a look at the application evaluation). She's recovered tho, "settling" for Southwestern. ;-)

It seems like getting the perfect MCAT/ GPA gets you "comfortable" for acceptance... so you're not pulling your hair in October, overnighting a copy of the MSAR from Amazon (have you noticed they only have a few copies left??), trying to figure out if your numbers make the cut offs and your essay sounds sincere. Still, not everything is so straightforward, and there are some interesting wild cards out there.

Tho all in all there's not much time to sit back and enjoy a chuckle at this crazy process until the Spring.

Man, that just irks the hell outta me that I have to go through this process again, just because I was 1-4 spots outta the class, and in order to attend Tech I'd have to pack up my entire life and haul my a$$ to Lubbock in 2 days. Everyone who keeps up with this thread, DON'T MAKE ANY IMPORTANT COMMITMENTS UNTIL THE MED SCHOOL CLASSES START!!! The lady I talked to, Linda Prado, said things like this happen way more often than people think (by that I mean offering acceptances to waitlisted folks right before classes start). GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! 😡 😡 😡 😡 👎

Let's just hope and pray that you have better luck this year. The way it's going, I'm sure you'll have a med school come Feb 1st!

😛 ...I thought that it was pretty representative of my state of mind during this process. But I changed it...just for you. On another note, I don't think that this season's Apprentice is as interesting as last seasons. I'm sad that the cute guy (Kevin?) got kicked off.

I have a lot of faith in the TMDSAS ranking system because it seems that applicants vary widely on their preferences, and everybody isn't just trying to get into the "highest ranking" school possible. I may be wrong, but I think most people are going to end up where they want to go. Anybody care to post their preferences thus far (post-interview)?

Mine are:

1. San Antonio
2. Galveston (almost a tie with San Antonio)
3. Tech
4. Houston

As of today (though I have yet to post them on the TMDSAS webpage) my choices are:

1. Southwestern

4. UTMB
5. Texas A&M

Note: All are post interview and I withdrew from TX Tech and declined the interview.

Right now I am not too sure between number two and number three. However, I am alos not sure about my last two rankings either.

Back in the good old day when I was applying, you had a real mix, those that rank based on 'elitism' (which when you get out of texas you realize that most people just have a vague idea that there is some big state down there with some medical schools in it and thus that whole 'which is best in texas' is really silly), some based on personality, and then some people not ranking/interviewing at other schools.

Many will get in and some won't get thier first choice.

Back when I interviewed, tech and A&M were seperate, along with baylor.

My ranking was:
1-UTHSCSA
2-UTSW
3-UTMB
4-UTH

I interviewed at baylor but as soon as i was accepted at UTHSCSA, I withdrew my application.



So, there is no rhyme or reason... You just have to sit and hold your breath.

I know who she's talking about--this happens to be the friend who interviewed everywhere in Texas early except for UTHSCSA--she keeps telling me that the same will happen to me. It's funny b/c we're alike in so many ways, and our med school interviews have followed a similar pattern =) And no, I'm pretty sure that she wasn't in SURGE.

lane--did you go through and count the number of ppl in the first-year class with the initials a.c.? This guy's really on top of his presidential duties! 😉

this time last year i had received 0 interviews. actually IIRC my stuff was just being processed around this time. it's only october - no worries.
