TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

Hey everyone
I have a question abt the timing of thank you notes. I interviewed with UTMB Nov 12....is it too late to send a thank you note to my interviewers? Does it reflect badly on my part or is it better not to send in anything at this point?

Thanks in advance for the input!

My 2 cents.....I think that whenever you send it is fine. They know that you are busy people and the fact that you would still be willing to do it a bit after the interview should reflect positively. Some people are travelling and busy for weeks (with interviews or not), so they should be understanding if it takes some time...especially if its hand written.

Just out of curiosity, why do you say that?

I was responding to someone (I thought I quoted it in my reply) who said that they lived in San Antonio and yet still didn't get an interview to UTSA (and their wistful comment about the relationship between living near some place and gaining acceptance there).

...It's a hokey phrase to mean that you live near something - "You could practically spit on it."

If it's geniune (a unique meeting), send it; if not, don't worry. I was writing TU cards at work yesterday, and an MD/PhD started talking about how he was always amazed that people sent them - he didn't send any and he got accepted. I really liked my last interviewer, so I sent him a card in appreciation.

Odds are sending/ not sending a card will have .0001% influence on your application - your interviewers have probably already sent their reports and many adcoms vote soon after your interviews. They will definitely not be saying "applicant 'lost' did not send a thank you card - admissions denied!"

But if you want to send one, send it now, don't mention any reasons behind the lateness (the important thing is you sent it), and cite one or 2 things that really impressed you about the interview - that way you have some way to stay fresh in their mind, just in case.

I just found my old medical school ID. *sniff*

Wow, was it printed on papyrus or hammered into stone tablets?

(sorry, getting geared up for all the "old jokes" I'll be tossing around with the family this year). 🙂

I don't know if this has already been posted but I found the breakdown interesting...

Yah, I saw the one for 2003 (my friend who is now an MS1 at UTMB brought me one from A&M). It was very similar. There sure are a range of GPAs and MCATs that are accepted to the Texas schools. I was very surprised to find that a large percentage of the MCATs were below 30--something I'm not used to seeing on SDN. Same goes for the GPAs--not all 3.7s and above!!!

Everybuddy have a VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Have a great Turkey Day everyone!! Eat like pigs, drink beer and watch ball. Hang out with friends and family and above Relax and try not to think about med school. I know it is tough. A year from now, we will all be dying to get home to escape exams and stress. Feb 1 will be here before you know it.

Hey there,
To those invited to interview at A&M on Dec 09...did you receive an interview packet? I received my invitation through e-mail several weeks ago, but no packet telling me where and when. I'll follow-up through the admissions office on Mon, but just wanted to check with y'all.

I got my packet about a week ago. I would call the admissions office to double check. I know that some people did not get their packets before their interviews.

That's weird....they sent me two packets before my interview. No wonder some people aren't getting theirs. 🙂

I never thought of it as wistful but indeed it is.

Hey guys...

I was wondering if there was anyone that reads/posts on these boards that was applying MD/PhD in Texas...

If so, have any of you guys heard back from any of the schools yet? Just wondering...PM me or reply if you have..

For everyone else, sorry for wasting ur time, have a grrrreat day! 😀

Hey cluelesspremed, I applied MD/PhD at UTHouston, UTMB, and TexasTech. I submitted TMDSAS pretty early in June and interviewed for MD/PhD at the three from October to November. UTHouston has its interviews on Thursdays, separate from the Friday MDs. Texas Tech simply adds on another interviewer to a regular MD interview. There are MD candidates at the MD/PhD interview for UTMB as well, but they separate you from the group after the morning intro.

Hey guys,
Wondering if any of you will be interviewing at UTHSCSA tomorrow, Nov. 29th. I live here in San Antonio, so I pretty much spend alot of time at the school getting work done. It's pretty laid back from my perspective, but I don't know how laid back I'll be tomorrow...getting nervous.

Anyway, best of luck to you all, we have done our best to this point, the rest is out of our hands now.
Best wishes,
Captain

don't worry - the whole day is very laid back. don't sweat the interviews - just have fun, be honest, and don't be afraid to ask questions. we MS1s will be around tomorrow morning before class to answer anything or to give you a nice little pep talk 🙂

best of luck

Does anybody know if we must submit our fall grades to the adcoms prior to the match?

You have to send an updated transcript to TMDSAS each semester until you graduate.

Wait, I don't want to sound like a jerk (uugh too late) but y'all send thank you notes? I never really thought about it I guess. Hmm...would it be too late to send a thank you note to in interview that happened in september or october? (why do i ask questions that I already know the answers too)

Anybody get interview invites Thanksgiving week?

If I were you, I wouldn't bother. Don't bother with Tech for sure, bc the adcom meets right after the interviewees leave. If you feel like you really are thankful or whatever, do it if it settles you down. It won't help you get in. Gluck :luck: !

Nope. I did however hear that the number of april MCATers applying "late" to Texas schools was pretty high this year...which means that Texas schools got more applicants in September and October than expected and that that probably means most TX schools have extended their interview dates.

UTSW is going to January 8th, is that an extension or has that always been the case?

Nope, I'm pretty sure they planned it that way. I think that all the schools should interview until at least Jan. 10; that's just my opinion, though.

Anyone else ready to GO HOME for the holidays? Thanksgiving was so awesome....I only checked my e-mail once a day (if that!) and didn't have to worry about checking the mail. For some reason, home is SUCH a haven....

Well we know San Antonio extended until 12/20. But yeah, hell, they should go until January 14th...I only need a day to rank'em!

Hey everyone,

This Thursday I'm flying out to Lubbock for interview on Friday and was wondering if anyone knew how many carry-on's the airlines are letting people take these days? I will be carrying my suit with me (for fear that they would lose it and I'd have to show up to my interview in jeans..I'm sure they'd just love that :scared: ), but I also would like to bring another bag with some extra clothes and toiletries. I'm trying my best to not have to check anything. Thanks for the help.

A soft suit bag and carry-on luggage will be fine. Just try to get on the plane early so you get prime real estate for your bag. If you are worried about having too much, just pack the pants and wear the blazer with a pair of jeans; then lay the blazer on top of your bag so it doesn't get wrinkled during the flight.

Good Luck.

So, does anyone know with some amount of certainty which of the TX schools have finished sending out invites, and which are still mailing them out??

Emily

I got UT Southwestern invite today for 1/8/2005, very much to my surprise. I wasn't expecting any more interview invites so had stopped checking my email 500x a day.

Awesome! Congratulations, meads. 👍

I'm ready for the match to be here, already. Sheesh! How many days left?

Hrm. Well, absenting anymore surprise interview invites, my current rank list looks like this:

1. UTSA
2. TAMU
3. TCOM

Post yours and discuss.

what was the email subject...out of curiosity...

(i keep checking 500x a day, yet no love...=)

So UTSW is sending out invites for its last date...I'd like one of those.

1. UTH
2. UTSA
or maybe the other way around...

1. UTH
2. UTMB
3. UTSW
4. A&M
5.-7. etc etc I hope I dont match lower than 4

(I'm a Houston resident and I'd love to go back....I've come to realize that the education at all the TX schools will be similar and I'm basing my rank mainly on location because it's also hard to judge what the incoming class will be like...agree? disagree?)

It was "Invitation for On-Campus Interview." Keep the hope alive...I had seriously long given up on utsw so when I got the email was actually like, "huh? what other school did i apply to??" =)

Thanks evo!

1. UTSW
2. UTHSCSA
3. UTMB
4. UTH
5. TAMU

Here's to Feb 1!!!

Wow it must be finals time cause there are not as many messages on here as there normally are..it usually takes me 1/2 a day to catch up on the weekend messages at work.

My rank:

1. UTSW - i live in Dallas and free rent and food (live with my parents) sounds great to me
2. TAMU - I absolutely LOVED it there
3. UTH
4. UTSCSA
5. UTMB

I am hoping to hear from Tech in the next few weeks so maybe my list will change again. Only 62 days left.

My rank:

1. UTSW--great school, wouldn't pass up an acceptance
2. UTMB--close to Houston (con: haunted house anatomy lab :scared: :scared: )
3. TAMU--next closest to Houston, and liked school
4. UTHSCSA--third closest to Houston
5. TTUHSC--waaaaay far away

Or maybe I want to rank #2-4 differently. I can't decide 😱 !!!

Yeah. I keep going back and forth between TAMU and UTSA. I really felt that at TAMU I'd get the chance to be a big fish in a little pond. And they were SO NICE! 😍

I actually wanna put TAMU in #2 and UTHSCSA in #3 and put UTMB as #4. But I really wanna stay close to Houston bc my boyfriend has a nice job there. The only place he could transfer to is Dallas, hence my putting UTSW as #1. He might not even be able to get a transfer AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! I just don't know what to do. It's hard to make such a commitment to someone, by that I mean ranking schools in such a way that you wouldn't if you were single. What if it doesn't work out??? I'm going to go crazy as Jan 15 approaches and I need to finalize my rank. Here's my Svedka vodka, CHEERS!!! :meanie:

Evo, one thing about TAMU though: I will never be an Aggie if I go there 👎 . I will forever be a LONGHORN :horns: who happens to attend Texas A&M College of Medicine :horns: .

Seriously though, I really liked TAMU. My parents live there and they're offering me a room 👍 .

1. UTSW (awesome school, town, etc.)
2. UTH
2. UTMB

I have no clue how to rank the last two, hence the tie--UTH is in Houston and the medical center and I know the city...but I don't even remember the interview day (it was the first one and they were uber disorganized). UTMB really impressed me and doing clinicals in Austin would be shweet....but the school is in Galveston.

Who knows....

w3rd to that sentiment! :horns:

Hrm. I envision myself saving scads of money by living in College Station. My ex paid something like 3-fiddy a month for a nice 1BR. 😱
