Of course, certain aspects of the social scene leave something to be desired, no?

What social scene? I sound like such a pessimist--some love it there, some get by, and some get outta dodge every weekend. Just depends on what your scene is...

Well, it certainly doesn't include "Bubba," that's fer shure. 😀

Ranking:

1. UTMB (would LOVE going to school half-a-day)
2. UTSW (great reputation and facilities)
3. UTH
4. UTSA
5. TAMU

I'm having a difficult time b/w UTMB and UTSW (even though they have polar opposite personalities). Did anyone get the impression that UTSW students seemed arrogant and cavalier? That's what I sensed - but now I'm starting to second-guess my interpretation. Thanks for the input.

When I was there, the students seemed very friendly, but their did seem to be an underlying sense of aloofness. Not sure how eloquent that is. I liked UTMB as well, especially in terms of the curriculum and stress on PBL. However, UT-H has the medical center which is simply unsurpassed as a resource.......****....well those are my top three, not sure where they all stand......

1. UTHSCSA
2. UTSW
3. TAMU
4. Tech
5. UTMB
6. UTH

I'm super confused about whether I should stay with this ranking or switch around UTSW, UTHSCSA, and TAMU. I loved all three of these schools, but SA is my home so I favor it just a tad over the others. It could change however. These are going to be hard decisions to make and we may not even get what we want....I hate the uncertainty of this whole process especially when you have to factor in a loved one that needs to be able to find a job where you are at. Oh well, meads says we have 62 days and 4 hours left! :scared: That's way too long!

I don't want to sound TOO desperate, seeing as its two months away, but does anyone know what time the match is online on Feburary 1st? Like at midnight is the TMDSAS website going to crash?

2 years ago they said it was up early at 10:30pm ...last year it came up right around midnight and it took a few tries to actually get the page to load 🙂

there's also some tricks with watching the "Last Action" date on your TMDSAS app online after january 15...but i'll leave that to yall to figure out

It's midnight on Jan. 31st. I knew people last year who went out and celebrated after the match results came out!!!!

I enjoyed all of my interviews and see positives about each school, but one of the major contributors for me will be the environment around the school. I don't know much about College Station, Dallas, or San Antonio. What are their respective areas like? Are they safe? Expensive? What does everyone think?

I'd say that College Station would be the cheapest and Dallas would be the most dangerous (especially where UTSW is located). But then again, College Station is, well, College Station. San Antonio is kind of "in the middle"--geographically, safety-wise, and expense-wise. It's also close to Austin, and has a unique Spanish culture. Correct me if I'm wrong about this stuff guys.

About rankings--

I'll post mine after I interview at UTSW on 12/11.

Hey asiandoc, I am asian too. 😀 Anyway, I was wondering how fast was the turn-around time after interview for St Louis University? Thanks

Well, I interviewed there on 9/28 and was accepted the first day on 10/15. I believe that the turnaround time is ~2 weeks for all candidates. My interviewer told me that they would let candidates know either way in that amount of time. If you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me!

I'll agree that UTHSCSA is in the middle - it's not in an urban environment like UTH or UTSW, or rural like TAMU or TT (Lubbock is rural to me)...it's kinda in the 'burbs of SA. It's also not nearly as expensive to live as the urban schools but it's probably not as cheap as the ones in the middle of nowhere. As a product of suburban Dallas I've found the location, cost, safety, etc. to be ideal out here just north of 410 🙂

I grew up in college station -- 16 years of my life, phew! It gets pretty claustrophic after a while...you can only drink so many nights a week at the Chicken, eh? 😀 I also consider myself a liberal, which is a rare and dying breed in CS, and if you fit into this category and care about such things, A&M might be problematic for you. Now I know nothing about Temple, but I didn't even apply to A&M for this reason. Then again, I have lived there for way too long already

As urban cities, Dallas and Houston are both "dangerous", but I think Houston is more than Dallas.
I've lived in the Houston med center area for almost 6 years and I know there's a good deal of crime. I went to school right across the street and there were several sexual assaults on the periphery of campus and in the houses right across the street (unversity st). My freshman or sophomore year of college, a Baylor student was hijacked and killed at the Blockbuster about 3 miles south of the med center.
I'm not sure about the crime around Southwestern, so I can't comment on that. But do the students actually live around southwestern? I know some live in med park (university housing) which is guarded by UT police and security, but I thought most lived in the SMU area or uptown area. I guess I will find out after my interview.

C'mon and tell us....help us fellow SDN'ers out! 😀 Pretty pleeeeeease??? Can you only tell if you're accepted if the date changes? If it doesn't change at all, does that mean you are not going to match? Surely, you won't be able to tell what school, right?

Living in a supposed crime ridden area isn't necessarily a reason to rule out a school. It does not get more swarly than South Central LA and the area around USC and as long as I've used common sense I've never had a prob here...

Read through this thread. It seems like some people thought the dates changed when the schools included the applicant in their match list. It also appears that people received a letter via postal mail during the day on 1/31, if their postal address was close to the med school.

Oh I agree. I never said I was ruling out either school b/c of crime; I was just responding to a comment that someone made earlier. I don't think I would have stuck around Houston for grad school if crime was a concern...

Eh, I live in/around the med center and it's really pretty safe. Starting my fourth year here....

Ah, we're in agreement then.

Grad school you say? Are we in the same school?? 😱

Right at midnight last year.

I didn't mean to say that Dallas and/or Houston should be "ruled out" because of crime. It's just that, compared to College Station, Lubbock, and San Antonio, these cities *seem* to have higher crime rates. And Galveston....uh, UTMB is currently my number 1 choice but it's not exactly the safest place to live either. And yes, I agree that with good common sense and safety tactics, you can live almost anywhere quite safely =)

It's beautiful outside in Austin!

close, but not exactly 🙂

I've lived in Dallas and even currently work across the street from UTSW, and trust me Dallas is not that bad. I live by SMU ( 15 minutes away ) and there are the normal crimes but I've never known of any students even being attacked... the area around UTSW is really ghetto I'm no going to deny that but it is hooked to Parkland our county hospital so your going to get some bums here and there but my parents live in Turtle Creek which is less than 5 blocks from the school and its $$$$$ area... Most students I know commute also which helps keep the cost of living down and there is a rail station witin like 1/2 block from the school...

Live in University Park? 🙂 Well of course there's no crime there...

It seems to me, that if the validation date changes from 00000000 to something than you have matched. I read through those threads for an hour and a half!! I think that that is when they check your transcripts for all of your pre-reqs which is the last step for an applicant to matriculate.

Is this right, lane?

Post number 3,000 y'all!!

I guess everything really IS bigger in Texas. 😀

That's right. 3002 posts. Maybe this is because we ponder stuff like validation dates on the TMDSAS status page, 2 months before match.

This is the most trafficked thread, followed by
Any black female pre-meds out there? (2412 posts)

so here's the deal (since i'm not a mean person)...

there's a Last Action Date on your TMDSAS profile in the top right corner (i cant remember exactly how to get there though - you'll figure it out)

right after january 15 that number (00000000) will change to something like (000011504), meaning 1-15-04 was the last action date. that's the last time the system used your name for any reason. if your number stays the same all the way through you matched to your highest school - the system doesnt need to move you again because youre already at the highest spot possible.

every ~4-5 days the system will take the names that 1) didnt match or 2) matched but have spots open at higher ranked schools and try to place them, which you can see by the number changing again (000011904). this will happen ~3-4 times between jan 15 and feb 1.

when your number freezes youve matched. if it keeps going you either havent matched or youve matched and the computer's trying to move you up.

that's about it.
