TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here we go people.

It is going to be hard to wait, however, the majority of you will get into a medical school in Texas and the eve of Feb 1 will be something to remember.

I realize I hype UTHSCSA (the only Texas school I applied to), but the truth is they are all great schools with +'s and -'s. In the end, if you work hard, you will be a more than capable, fully competent physician.

Evo, I hope you kept UTHSCSA at the top!! I already nominate you as first year-class president.

So, let's say that you match at your #2 choice....and then, in June, you get into your #1 choice. Does that mean that you now have a choice between the two schools? I mean, if you had already found housing in the city of your #2 choice, wouldn't it be a hassle to change everything at the last minute? I'm so scared that this is going to happen to me....and given the choice b/w my #1 and #2 choices, I think I'd be an emotional mess--torn b/w the school that I originally got into and the one that I recently got into. Comments, anyone?

I was worried about this too, so I found the answer on that match info link stitch gave a while back. If the scenario you describe happens, you have 2 weeks to decide if you want to drop your #2 choice to attend your #1. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong!

Good luck all as we finilize the rankings!! :luck:

Too bad the Rams are getting killed, now my mind is on the match 🙁

Very good friend of mine a couple of years ago (she is now a MS3) ranked utsw #1 and utsa #2. Matched @ SA, found an apartment in San Antone, all set to go, the whole nine yards.

~ a week before she was to leave for SA, she got a call from SW inviting her to join the class. She went and all is fine. 🙂

Hope that this helps.

Heh. I have to match there (or anywhere in TX) first, my friend. 😉

But thanks. 🙂

AsianDoc, that would be a horrible situation to be put into...I am so glad now I only interviewed at one school! 😀

J/k of course...In my opinion, if you are torn between your #1 and #2, the bright side is that you would probably be happy at either one. By the time you get an acceptance to #1 school (in your scenario) you probably have already gotten pysched to go to school #2...You've probably found a bachelorette pad with bars for heavy drinking within walking distance (or nearby bookstores filled with classical literature if that's your thing...) In this case, an acceptance to school #1 would not phase you. So you can't go wrong!👍

so does RCW update, validation date and last master file update have anything do with you being matched to your first choice school or matched to a school. i read people wrote about this and wanted to know what it was about.

thanx

It's 11:47...I can't believe I'm sitting here in front of my computer still debating my rankings. Talk about procrastinating!!! It's not like I haven't had months to think about this...ugh! I just want it taken out of my hands now. Anyway, I'm going out to distract myself from thinking about this anymore.

that's what it seemed last year but everyone this year is skeptical and essentially blowing it off. no one knows for sure.

Um, I still have a validation date of "000000". Should I be panicking?

No, the validation date is when TMDSAS gets around to verifying the grades that you entered on your application to what's on your transcript. Remember that they are not known for the lightening speed at which they get things done. It has nothing to do with the match.

Evo,

I don't think that can happen anymore. All of the TX schools (including Baylor) have an agreement that they cannot offer acceptances to applicants who have been accepted to a TX school after June 1. I've had friends who were called by Baylor (after June 1st) and asked to drop their acceptances at another TX school if they were still interested in Baylor.

Basically, by June 1 you should know where you are going. Unless you on the waitlist at Baylor.

Here is an excerpt from the TMDSAS website "Acceptances from alternate lists may continue through June 1. After June 1, no medical school in Texas may offer a position to an applicant already accepted by another medical school in Texas. This is the result of an agreement between the four U.T. System Medical schools, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, and University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth College of Osteopathic Medicine."

Who else is freaking out even more now that we have all (schools included) submitted our lists? 😱

Me :scared:

So what are you guys doing to kill the time? I scheduled a trip to Las Vegas the weekend before the match. My flight arrives back in Atlanta at 5:40 am on Monday the 31st. After class, I'm going to sleep until about 11:00 pm and then wait for the match to be posted.

I am going to clean my house (floor to ceiling) every evening after work and drink LOTS of wine while doing so. Real healthy, huh? Hey, at least I am combining some positive health behavior with a negative one so they should cancel each other out. 😉

Traveling before the match is a great idea! Vegas will take anyone's mind off of anything, especially if you win the jackpot! :luck:

hi guys....i have been reading this thread for a while.........this process is driving me crazy!!!!!! the thought that everything is in and now we have to wait two weeks makes me want to scream..... oh well, guess I will have to find something to do to get my mind off of this for a little while at least ...... 😀

I was wondering if someone could help me out:
If I worked last year and don't yet have my W2 forms, do I have to wait to get them before i can fill out a FAFSA form?
If I was claimed as a dependent last year, will it substantially affect how much aid I can recieved?
Thanks.

Yes. I'm in the same situation. Just wait to get your W2, then do your taxes, then do the FAFSA. You should get it pretty soon anyway.

I asked this question to Mr Kettlewell from the UT Southwestern financial aid office and he said the W-2s will be sent shortly and there will be no disadvantage to doing it then. Additionally, my girlfriend reminded me of the fact that after the texas match (~2 weeks), I could definitively put one UT school instead of having to list all of those to which I interviewed. I thought it made sense. Good luck, the fafsa kinda sucks.

Actually, that brings up one of the oddities of the Texas system. If your #1 choice has an opening after June 1, they will not be allowed to offer you admission and they will have to go further down their list and look for someone who is not sitting on an acceptance to a TMDSAS school (or Baylor). The final cutoff when you can stop "worrying" about being accepted to a higher ranked TMDSAS school where you are waitlisted is June 1. Below I quote from the TMDSAS web site:

Acceptances from alternate lists may continue through June 1. After June 1, no medical school in Texas may offer a position to an applicant already accepted by another medical school in Texas. This is the result of an agreement between the four U.T. Thanks for all of your responses on this matter. Is June 1st the date that everyone must declare where they are going to medical school? I know a lot of people who will be holding spots at both Baylor and one other Texas medical school (especially Southwestern). I'm urging all of you who are in this unique position to please make up your minds speedily to allow others (including me) a chance at our number one choice!

No, May 15th is the date you can only hold one acceptance. However, if you do get off a waitlist after May 15th, I think you have 2 weeks to decide. When June 1 rolls around, you can only hold one spot at a TX school and will not be offered another spot (unless Baylor calls you and asks you to drop your spot at another school).

Yes, this is consistent with everything else that I've heard. Thanks again to all for your hasty responses! After a nearly sleepless night last night, I realized that I just want to match somewhere. It'd be nice to get into my number 1 choice, but, I truly believe that everyone ends up where they are meant to be.

Being back in Austin has made me calm down a bit. This is my last semester in this wondrous city, and I'm going to enjoy every second of it! I'm so excited to be starting school again--hopefully a few more A's will boost my self-confidence. This match/application process has made me doubt and question myself. Oh, the woes of a worried pre-med student!

Happy birthday (belated) UTKB!

SFAJess - bummer about the tough choices, tho I'm a firm believer in "everything happens for a reason," so I'm sure you'll match at the perfect place.

Seabass, lane, GO, etc: thanks for all the advice on TX schools!

Thanks again EVERYONE for the birthday wishes. Y'all are so cool.

Time for some whining: my validation date and master file update haven't changed!!!! They have December dates. I really hope all that mumbo jumbo about the status page is hooey. 🙁 If it isn't, then 😱 🙁

We're in the same boat...My dates are still listed as early January. Perhaps they won't start running the match until tomorrow since today is a holiday.

AsianDoc and I haven't had any changes on our master file update either! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'll be mad if y'alls changes and leave me in the cold...just kidding. We need to form a support club or something. 🙂

I think these dates mean nothing. All of you who have not seen changes yet are EXCEPTIONAL applicants with multiple interviews, so don't worry. You guys are bound to get in somewhere!!!!! 😀

Besides, our deadline was 11:59pm on Saturday. They couldn't have possibly started running the match before the deadline.

The significant increase in the level of neuroticism on this thread since Saturday is kind of amusing. 😱

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is going nuts! :scared:

Is anyone getting the feeling that having a last action update of 1-15-05 is NOT a good thing?

megs said:

Megs, it could go both ways and it could, and probably does, have little to do with whether you match or not. Take a deep breath and think positive, i.e. "having a last action update of 1-15-05 is a good thing!" You'll be fine, go do something to take your mind off. For me, playing solitare constantly without sleeping for the next 2 weeks seems to be a solid plan thus far.

Geez, I wish that this whole date business was never brought up. It is driving all of us crazy. GRRRRR....just spent 6 hours training new research assistants--I'm so tired of talking!!! I could never be a professor....I prefer learning to teaching =)

Hey...when are we supposed to put in our preferences? Do we have up to Feb 1st? I'm having trouble deciding...

hopefully that was a joke!?

Okay.. I'm not even in the match and y'all are making even ME anxious. 😉

Everybody deep breath in... deep breath out. repeat this to yourselves: "there is nothing I can do that will change my fate from this point on". Stressing yourselves out will only accomplish just that.

It's been established year after year that those update dates mean NOTHING!! They have NO bearing on whether you matched or not.

You'll all do great !! Try to keep yourselves busy... and rally together for support. Y'all are feeding off each other and it's counter-productive.

GOOD LUCK TEXAS PEEPS !! :luck: :luck: All my best.

Oh no honey!! Hopefully you had some kind of preliminary ranking saved that you might just have to deal with. Good luck!

Several of the accepted #'s seem low, likely only the top 3 accurately reported how far into their match list they had to go to fill a class.

#’s from USNEWS 2005 % (other reports)
School...Applied...Interviewed..Accepted...Enrolled…..[% of I’s Accepted]
UTSW .....2,630.......643.............391............218…..60%
UTH .......2,756.....1,140...........(679)260.......202…..(60%)
A&M .......2,233.......514.............243..............70…..47%
UTMB .....2,707........981.............231............205…..32%
TTECH.....2,202.....651(800).......172(512)......130…..(64%)
TCOM .....1,350.......447.............155.............127…..34%
UTSA.....Did not participate in USNEWS survey
UTSA(est)…????....(1000)...........(500)...........(200)…..(50%)

This seems vey encouraging --thankfully we have many very good schools to choose from - hundreds of students on 'our schools' accepted list may rank another school higher. (Heck, just look at the SDN polls - the most popular schools only got 34% & 24% !)

If the percentages are additive, multiple interviews seems to indicate wonderful odds - (my stats prof might frown on this logic...)

Perhaps just wishful thinking - but it helps keep me sane while waiting (sortof)!

What do you guys think?

I think you did a very good job of collecting data....but you're going to drive yourself crazy trying to figure out the diff. probabilities... 😛

Anyone else second guessing their rankings? Oh well, doesn't matter at this point. I'll be happy as long as I match :scared:

I was worried for you! I remember reading about someone that really happened to - but that was a few years ago when you had to mail preferences into TMDSAS.

As much as the TMDSAS folks seem to hate pre-med applicant Questions, can you imagine that conversation: Umm, I forgot to rank my schools....would it be any trouble to runthe match again? Please? 😀

So, several of my new research assistants happen to be pre-med (no wonder, since our lab makes us work like dogs!), and today, this one girl says, "Well, Southwestern is my top choice." I was like, oh no, another one of those....I didn't even bother telling her that you won't know what your top choice will be until you've finished your interviews. I'm so glad that I've passed this point, been through the process, and that there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING MORE I can do to improve my application, etc. Guys and gals, it's no longer in our hands....and somehow, it's a bit reassuring. It's been a long, hard wait, but it will be over soon....

I agree......I'm kinda glad that we have all reached this point of no return.....although the waiting is killing me :luck:

It is amazing how clear and simple choosing a school seemed a couple of years ago! I would of never believed how complex it can be-or how complicated I made it!

Hmm …are we all going to be completely certifiable when residency choice and match comes along? Hopefully, that will not be a repeat of this! The application process has been very complex, long, frustrating, disheartening and yet exciting! It is a relief to have it out of our hands! Imagine trying to explain to those premeds how draining this process is!
