TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i had no idea UTSW and UTH accepted such a high percentage of their interviewees. This is encouraging, since they're my top two! Of course...I am now going over and over in my head whether that was the right choice (I LOVED UTSA too)......its hilarious to me (in a laugh-or-cry kind of way) that they give the most mind-blowing, insane application process to the most neurotic brand of undergrads. This is us all the time: :scared: Hahaha.

Good luck everyone. I used to HATE the nonrolling business, except now that its two weeks out, I'm kind of happy that there's a definite date to know, unlike some other schools (...BAYLOR) who just leave you hanging till whenever they get around to it and self-doubt until they do. Almost....there....!!!

You know, there is always someone 'worse off' than you. When you are an intern, you thank god you aren't a fourth year interviewiing. when you are a fourth year, you are glad you aren't a third year. and so on and so on.

you guys should just be glad you interviewed and took your MCAT. 😀

And aren't stuck in an overheated ED surfing the web

I was worried for you! I remember reading about someone that really happened to - but that was a few years ago when you had to mail preferences into TMDSAS.

As much as the TMDSAS folks seem to hate pre-med applicant Questions, can you imagine that conversation: Umm, I forgot to rank my schools....would it be any trouble to runthe match again? Please? 😀

Yeah, I think I would go jump off a cliff if that happened to me!

I'll admit though that I probably re-checked my preference list at least a 100 times! I had this crazy fear that whenever I checked it, somehow I accidentally clicked on something and screwed it up. Then, I would go back to it again to see if it was still intact or not. Pretty neurotic huh? :scared:

This morning, I woke up sweating with a fear that I hadn't hit the right button on the TMDSAS site. I kept thinking, "what if the real save button was actually hidden in an obscure part of the screen?!" The save button was obvious...wasn't it???

I did that too. I'm still paranoid about it even though I know there's nothing I can do about it now.

Have you guys been sleeping well? Last night, and two nights before, I've only gotten about 4 hours of shut-eye. I keep waking up in the middle of the night for no reason. And I usually sleep SO WELL. The second that I hit the bed, I'm usually sound asleep. Grrrrrr....

You need to try to relax. For those of you fortunate enough to already have an acceptance somewhere, remember that you will be going to medical school next year. For those of you that had many interviews in texas schools, remember statistically your chances of getting in are very very good. And for everyone, remember that you have done all that you can, it is now out of your hands. Embrace the fact that you have done all that you can to get into medical school for next year, and the chips will fall where they may. Getting into medical school may seem like the be all end all at this point in many peoples lives, but it really isnt. There are much more important things out there and many people going through very difficult times. When you start obssessing over the match, try to remember the dire situation that all those people that faced the tsunamis are going through, that all the AIDS afflicted patients in Africa go through, and about how people in this country who have dire medical conditions but can not afford the treatment face.

If all that does not work, then just try to exercise yourself to exhaustion. When your body is really beat, your mind usually can't help but to shut down to get the rest your body craves.

Good luck to everyone, but again, life does not end on feb 1 regardless of the outcome.

Hey everyone,
I need to vent. There are a few advertisements around here for some nice sounding jobs and fellowships with due dates pretty soon. I don't know whether I should apply for them or not. It all depends on the results of the match which we still have 2 weeks to wait for. The application process for these is a lot of work and I'll need letters so I don't want to do it for nothing. This waiting sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to echo what jdovez said. All of this stressing out and losing sleep is not going to do anyone a lick of good. For those already holding acceptances, calm down and realize that you're going to be in med school this time next year. Cheer up! 🙂

For those who've interviewed @ several schools (don't know what the "magic" number is), be confident that many schools believed that you (yes, you) have the capability to become an excellent physician. It's going to happen. And if by some horrible chance you *don't* get accepted this year, be confident that it WILL happen. Trust me, I know.

I've been around the application process for a couple of years now, and from what I see, no one here has anything to worry about. Spend the time between now and the match with your friends and family. Hand-write someone a letter. Go volunteer at a clinic or with the homeless. See that the world doesn't end or begin with the match. 🙂

You guys are great. It has been an honor to get to know everyone and I hope that soon I will be classmates with some of you. As it must, this thread will soon enough pass on into the bowels of SDN history as we congregate to our new "XXXX school C/O 2009" threads. in the meantime, let's try and stay positive for the remaining time we have together. How about some jokes? Inter-school rivalry? How will all the Longhorns deal with it if we match @ TAMU? :scared:

Hey if you really want to relax and laugh your heads off, I watched "Harold and Kumar..." Its a crazy movie! I highly recommend it!

Thanks again EVERYONE for the birthday wishes. Y'all are so cool.

Time for some whining: my validation date and master file update haven't changed!!!! They have December dates. I really hope all that mumbo jumbo about the status page is hooey. 🙁 If it isn't, then 😱 🙁

For those of you still in school, I don't think you have any reason to stress that you haven't been validated yet. It says on the TMDSAS website that "ALL transcripts must be received in order for TMDSAS to conduct the validating of courses." So if in section J of your Documents Received status page, there is an "N" for "Need" in the Spring 2005 transcript column, you probably won't be validated until this is received.

What kind of transcript would they need? Some sort of receipt for tuition paid for Spring '05?

Yeah you should apply because a 4.0 and 35 just doesn't have a chance... 🙄 you're going to get in, chill out.

I'm sure they'll want to see your end of semester grades. This way they can be assured that all your coursework is completed with passing grades.

For those of us who can't stop asking about the validation date... 😴

That we have not validated your fall coursework.

We know what the validation date is....we want to know if the Last Master File Update has to do with the match. I thought we had verified that the validation had to do with transcripts according to the TMDSAS website.

well, only some of us seem to know that considering there has been more than one question about it in the last couple of pages...

I believe we confirmed that everybody who has turned in all of their transcripts, including for this past fall has been validated....correct me if I'm wrong anyone. There's a lot of dates changing on the website so it's hard to figure out what means what. 🙂 Let us know if you hear something different from TMDSAS. 🙂

well this is just one example of a question/issue just on this page that was answered with that email.
fall transcript=validation
and if anything, posting that email was additional comfort for many people on this forum considering everyone is in a state of panic.

Now, to complicate things...TMDSAS says they still (N)eed my fall and spring 05 transcripts -yet I was validated 1-17. I have completed all pre-reqs so perhaps that is what it is about?

From earlier posts, I agree TMDSAS has confirmed the validation date has nothing to do with the match - however, I haven't read I heard anything about the other update dates. Has anyone else seen date changes on the 15th & 17? We may not be able to figure it out this year-but by talking about it here, and reporting our date changes and Feb1 results, we might be able to shed some light on it for those applying next year. 🙂

I was validated before they received my fall transcript, if that means anything to anyone. Someone should try to get a summer job at TMDSAS so we can find out what all this about the date changes really means.

They recieved my fall grades, yet I am not validated yet. They did, however, update my last update. I honestly don't think any of these dates have anything to do with the match, there just doesn't seem to be any method to it. Anyhow, we only have 13 more days to go! 🙂

Haha, funny disclaimer!

I was "validated" in December and I am out of school. I am keeping an eye on my Master File Update date. It still says 121704 and some people on this thread have seen theirs (Master File Update) change at/about the time preferences were due (011505). This is why i'm getting a little anxious.

I'm strung really tight because I was rejected last year, and I am just so afraid of it happening again. It was a VERY humbling experience! The date speculation gives me at least something to keep my mind busy instead of concentrating on the consequences of getting rejected again.

Here is my take on the dates.

I was validated 12/14/04. It has not changed. I think this is when they validate your pre-reqs, because I was done with them after junior year.

My RCW update was 1/03/05. This was when they got my Fall '04 transcript.

My Master File Update was in 12/10/04. I have no idea what this could be, but I was done with all interviews by this time.

None of them have changed since 1/15. This is either good, or bad, or means nothing at all .

I had last master file update on 1-15 and 1-17.

Not true for me. Haven't been validated yet and I graduated Dec 03. Last update date was 1/14/05 for me, but that date changed for me within a week after each interview, and 1/14 is about a week after my UTSW interview.

ditto to all of the above but substitute Dec 03 with May 04. =)

You'd think TMDSAS would save themselves the headache of all these questions and just take those three dates off the online application status sheet!

I really should stop reading this thread because it's making me neurotic. 🙂

So, in summary...
Validation date is when they check your pre-reqs,
RCW date is when they update your transcripts,
and Master file date is...?

Soooo confused.

That would be so great and lovely! And if so many people on this thread continually ask about these dates, I'm assuming that other folk do too....so why are these questions not being answered on the FAQ page of the site? hmmm

truth is though I probably would not have noticed a thing about the dates or have given them a second thought had it not been for the craziness of this thread. 😛

I believe 99% of us would not have noticed nor cared about it. In any event, has anyone called TMDSAS and just asked what these dates mean? I doubt they are trying to hide anything.

Same here, but graduated MAY 04 and completed my app over the summer. Still a bunch of zeros for Validation. Last update on 1/15. I know it's hard not too read into all of this but I'm trying my best. Good luck to you all. I love this thread. You guys rock🙂

I don't really think they would tell us if the dates had anything to do with the match. They are so secretive about the match.

During the fall I would always see a new date right before I was about to get an interview or maybe it was just a coincidence and I interpreted it to be something it wasn't.

Nothing seems to be consistent....either somebody has a validation date or a master file update or both and none of its consistent with anything anymore. I think somebody sits in a building in Austin (knowing premeds are observant and neurotic) and changes dates around just to make us ansy. Who knows?

For anyone that cares and still wants to develop a conspiracy theory....my validation date and RCW date changed on 010505. However, my Master File Update date remains 121604.

Good luck to us all!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:
13 days, 5 hours, 12 min to go!!!

I agree-it seems strange that these unexplained dates are on the app. Perhaps they have nothing to do with the match-this makes sense as TMDSAS would not want to broadcast match activity so blatantly. Yet it does seem strange that the date remains undescribed...

Hopefully we can figure it out this year.

I think my RCW date changed when I updated my rank list or sent in transcripts -does this seem right to others?

My numbers:

Last RCW Update: 011005
Last Master File Update: 011505
Validation Date: 000000

FWIW, I don't think validation has *anything* to do with the match. When I interviewed @ TCOM, they asked me a question abuot one of my chem pre-reqs from back in the day. It's kind of a weird way that I completed gchem 2...anyway, I asked if that info had anything to do with the match and selection for matriculation. They said "No." That if there was an issue, then they would require me (or anyone) to complete it the summer before matriculation.

So to summarise:
Validation ----> No Match significance (verifiying that you have completed pre-reqs).
RCW Update --> Receipt of Transcripts.
Last Master File Update --> [speculation]Updating of the file for any reason: validation, transcript receipt, recording of Match preferences, ?????[/speculation]

In any case, we'd all do well to not stress out too much. UTKB, I feel your pain. I was not matched last year either. HOwever, I interviewed at 3 vs. 1 school this year. You seem to have done well too. Let's try and relax a bit. 🙂

Joke time!!! :horns:

*Did you know that there are three types of Aggies? Those who can count and those who can't.

*An Aggie, a Baylor Bear, and a Texas Longhorn need some money. So they decide to rob a bank. They rob the bank and then hear the cops coming, so they hide in the woods.
The Baylor Bear climbs into a tree, and when the cops come by, he shakes the branches and makes bird noises. The cops think it's just some birds, so they go on.
The Longhorn climbs into a tree and shakes the branches, and the cops think it's a squirrel, so they go on.
The Aggie climbs into a tree. The cops hear some rustling and they say, "What was that?" And the Aggie goes, " Moo! Mooo!"

* How many Aggies did it take to unscrew a light bulb? 1,001. One to hold the bulb and 1,000 to turn the house.

*How do you get a Texas A & M graduate off your front porch? You pay for your pizza!

*Two Aggies are driving to Houston. The driver suspects his turn signals aren't working. So he pulls over and asks his passenger to get out and check. So the guy checks and yells to the driver, "No, they're not working. Wait, yes they are. No, they're not. Hold it, yes, they are."

* Why do Aggies hate M&Ms? They're too hard to peel.

Two poor Aggies drowned at a game last year.

His dog drowned while he tried to get the tailgate down.

# Why don't Aggies eat barbecue beans?
Because they keep falling through the holes in the grill.

# Why don't Aggies use 911 in an emergency?
Because they can't find "eleven" on the phone dial.

# How can you tell an Aggie is on location at a drilling rig?
He's the one throwing bread to the helicopters.

# How many Aggies does it take to eat an armadillo?
Three. One to do the eating, and two to watch for cars.

# Two Aggie builders were working on a house. One Aggie was on a ladder nailing. He'd reach into his nail pouch, pull out a nail, look at it, and either toss it over his shoulder or proceed to nail it into the wood.

The other Aggie couldn't stand it any longer and yells up, "Why are you throwing some of the nails away?"

The first Aggie explained, "When I pull it out of my nail pouch, if it's pointed toward me I throw it away. If it's pointed toward the house, then I can use it!"

The second Aggie got real excited and called him all kinds of names, explaining, "Don't throw away those nails that are pointed toward you! They're for the other side of the house!!"

# An Aggie decides to raise chickens. So, he goes to the feed store and buys some chicks. He takes the chicks home, and plants them with their heads sticking up. He waters them, but they die.

He goes back to the feed store and tells the proprietor that he bought defective chicks, and gets another set. This time he plants them with their heads sticking down. He waters them, but they die.

He then sends a letter to his Alma Mater, describing the problem. They send a letter back asking for a soil sample.
