TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The Houston hardcopy stuff is the same as the e-mail attachments, I think its a precautionary thing they do in case people don't get their e-mail, or have a different address than the one listed on the TMDSAS file. You'll be o.k., Good luck on Thursday!

I recieved an invitation to UTSA this past friday in the mail. My interview is on Aug 16, Soon! I need to start preparing, 😱 but I figure I'll at least be prepared for my Houston interview a week later. By the way, have you heard from Galveston?

yeah, heard from UTMB last week. interview on the 13th. next week!!!
ill be able to tell youz guys/gals some interview tidbits and advice.
ill post on friday about the a&m interview.

I got an interview at Houston and Galveston on the same day. Christina Mendez at Houston said many people interview there in the morning and Galveston that afternoon. Is this true? Anyone else heard of this?

Tiffany

Whatever.. I am totally panicking now.

Looks like I'll be seeing a bunch of SDNers at the interviews...they're coming up way too soon! :scared: *nervously nibbling on fingernails*

BTW, anyone planning on getting there the night before the interviews? Staying with students or at a hotel? Good idea, bad idea? Would you recommend going to the night-before events? Classes in the morning (UTSA's the only one who's offered that i think)?

Really? I didn't think that was even possible...I'd be very interested to know if that's true as well.

Anyone else have an interview on the Sept. 3rd at UT Houston? I just got an email with the details and wanted to know who to look forward to seeing

I'll be getting there the night before both my interviews and was wondering about the night before stuff too...the interview feedbacks I've read didn't seem to think they were that great.

Hey GutsyGal, when did you get your stuff processed again? Just wondering if I'll be hearing from UTSA anytime soon...

um...relatively early i think. 6/30. But I know a lot of people who processed like mid-July and have the same interview dates I do. When did you get processed?

I was processed 7/21.

Hey y'all! I just got my email for UTH interview on Sept. 3....I can stop panicking now.

Well I'll be there....are you planning on staying with a med student the night before?

No I have friend who lives out in Houston and relatively close to UTH so I'm going to stay with her the night before. I look forward to seeing you there.

Last year, the night before the UTHSCSA interview, some applicants met up at the Bombay Bicycle Club to meet some first and second years. Overall it was OK. You have to just jump right in and meet people and ask questions. Overall, I was more comfortable during the interview day since I had already met some fellow applicants the night before over a couple of beers. If anyone has any questions concerning the UTHSCSA interview day, PM me. I was accepted and I am currently on a one year deferral. I look forward to the start of med school in 2005 and to be the classmate of those of you who decide on UTHSCSA.

TCOM just called me and I have an interview for Tuesday, August 10th. 😀

I was processed on 7/21.

Anybody have advice or links to TCOm interview stuff?

Hey you app geniuses. I had to wait for a LOR and now my tmdsas app is still processing... I havn't received the snail mail questionairre thingy yet. Can I fill out my secondaries even though the tmdsas file has not been transmitted?

Thanks and good luck to all!

yes you can. 🙂

Hey everyone,

Congrats on all the interviews! I was wondering if anyone got an interview with a low MCAT score (<26). I'm going to be retaking my MCAT in less than 2 weeks and now the pressure is really on.

A friend of mine got a 25 and she has three interviews lined up. I think they're at san antonio, houston, and TCOM. Good luck on the MCAT! 🙂

You can and should! I timed it so that the schools received my secondaries before my app was processed so I could get it transmitted to the schools asap.

Thank you evo for the interview info.

By the way everyone, I called Tech and UTSW just now and they are going to be processing for the next 2 weeks--so they might not have even seen your application yet.

I just got an email from A&M for 8/19! That week is going to be super hectic...A&M on Thursday and Galveston on Friday. ACK! But I am super excited, congrats to everyone getting interviews 🙂

Edit: N/m, you were processed on 7/21 (saw old thread)

You know what we're missing guys? The social hour aspect of this thread.

**Passes everyone a drink**

So, I'm thinking that we're going to have our interviews done by October at the latest. Then, we can watch people flip out trying to submit their apps on the deadline.

Gonna be some good people watching. Whaddy'all think?

*lights cig*

That was me last year, ridiculously late submission of TMDSAS and all my secondaries. I almost didn't get my UTHSCSA secondary in on time, I had to overnight it. 😳 You guys are all mad early compared to me. I have friends who were done with all their interviews before I even submitted my TMDSAS I think. And Evo, the thesis? I'm um, on hiatus for now I think. Projected August graduation has been moved back to December...

G0S2 - Class of 08 is so much better than 09 is gonna be. You missed out! :meanie: 😉

SEUPATTY - got your PM and responded!

you guys all that got interview from UT-houston and UTMB, do they already have your letters of rec. b/c i can't sent mine til next week and i hear people have gotten interview letter w/o letter of rec. is it tru let me know, thanx.

UTMB was snail mail, I got it Friday. A&M was email and I JUST got it today.

i've been lurking and tracking this thread for a while. here's my progress:

TMDSAS/AMCAS transmitted: 7/1
AMCAS processed: 7/15
TMDSAS processed: 7/27
TMDSAS mailed: 7/30
UT Houston interview offer: 8/3 for 9/3 interview

No word from UTMB, UTHSCSA yet.

Still need to submit baylor/SW secondaries.

Everything, including LOR, was turned in for me....but, honestly, I don't know either way if they are needed or not yet.

Good luck on finding out!

Get your UTSW secondary in soon (before baylor), because they are now processing everything. Baylor typically has later interviews anyway.

Good luck lurker lol 😀

yes, people do this but they seem to be pretty stressed by the whole thing and I don't think you get to enjoy either school as much as you would separately.

I got an interview at UTH and I am still missing one of my LORs, so it is possible..I'm just wondering if that is holding up the rest of the schools though because UTH may be the exception.

Does anybody know of someone who has stayed with a medical student that night before their interview? I just signed up to stay with one at UTH for my 9/3 interview.

Well if anybody has any info....

Thanks a bunch!b b

Hey Guys,
Need a little help here. I'm currently a reapplicant, I applied last year and didn't get any interviews, so I decided this year I'd retake the MCAT in April and try to apply earlier than last. As far as grades is concerned, I do not have a strong GPA, overall a 2.83. I believe I might've put some classes in the wrong category, b/c my science GPA is lower than that, which I know it isn't. I attribute my GPA mainly b/c I started a mechanical engineering major, then finally switched to Exercise Physiology. I was also in the Corps at A&M and it didn't help much my first year. Ever since I switched, I had 3.0+ GPAs. I wanted to ask you guys for an honest opinion. I graduated back in Aug '03, when I first applied I applied pretty late, submitted the TMDSAS in mid to late July and scored a 24L on the MCAT. This second time around, I took the April MCAT, got a 27N, and submitted my app real early. It got sent 07/14/2004, and all my secondaries were completed either on or before that date. I applied to all 8 Texas schools including Baylor as well. I have a lot of good secondary experiences and leadership experience. I worked a camp for chronically diseased children, doing research at St. Luke's on the TexGen project, and was Commanding Officer of my company in the Corps at A&M. I have a really strong personal statement and other secondary experiences. I am currently doing personal training at 24 Hour Fitness, so for UNT, I completely understand the concept of wellness and disease prevention.

So what do you guys/gals think? Do they see this as persistance and that I tried harder this time around to get in? I'm sure that's a plus. So, just your honest opinions, think I'll get any interviews at all? I mean, I'd love to stay in Houston, but I know how competitive it is. Thanks guys for your help, and good luck to all of you!!

Well, I am getting a little impatient. My TMDSAS was processed on 7/28 and now it is 8/4 and no interview offers. I have competitive numbers and felt pretty confident about my application.

It is tough to be anxious.

Any compassion and concern is welcome.

PS All secondaries were submitted over two weeks ago except A&M wich goes out today.

Hiya.

Well, to be blunt, no. I don't think that you have a chance right now as things stand. If you submitted early last year and got NO LOVE, well then I don't see how things have changed over the past year. And despite what people might say, no amount of EC's, etc. will make up for a lack of academic excellence. Believe me, I know.

But hear me out:

1. You need to think about this from the perspective of the adcom. What do you have on your application to show them (those who would fight for you in the meetings) that you can handle the MS curriculum? What is the breakdown of your grades over the past two years of school? Was it 3.5+?

2. Your MCAT okay, though not stellar. With such a low GPA, you HAVE TO ROCK THE MCAT. Again, you want to give any potential adcom champions good ammunition to defend your application with.

3. Seriously consider a postbacc. Do a search on SDN, or better yet look into the PostBacc subforum here on SDN. You'll get an idea of good options that way.

4. Consider applying to a couple of osteopathic schools outside the state this cycle. They generally seem a bit more forgiving to folks in your situation. You might get in, and then you wouldn't have to do the postbacc.

Overall, though, it looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you. Don't be afraid of it, but realize that you're going to need to really show adcoms that you can handle the curriculum of MS.

My two cents.

I was feeling pretty anxious as well last week...but chill out. I submitted on 7/21, a week before yours, and just heard from UTH yesterday (8/3). So hold on until around the end of next week and then you can maybe be anxious then.

It will all come....just wait another week! 🙂

BTW, I haven't done my A&M Secondary yet either and just submitted my SW secondary yesterday evening....I got a boost of motivation after getting the email invitation from UTH.

Good Luck to you! :luck:
You'll be fine.

OP,
Your best bet is to take some courses to show that you can get your GPA up. You will need about a year of hardcore science courses. Here at UNT there is a post bac program and about half these people move on to med school somewhere. And Evo, what exactly makes you the expert on the medical school admission's process? I think the OP probably needed to hear from people who have already made it through the process. But something tells me that since Evo has over 5000 posts in such a short time that he/she must be the resident expert on everything around here.

Hey dood, I know you have problems with me (why, I cannot fathom). But you need to keep your sneering hatred off this thread.

Honest truth and not happy-go-lucky hand waving is what the guy needs to hear. I told him: given the info provided, he needs to do at LEAST a year of hard core post bacc work to make it in. Or do you now not know how to read?? 😕

And, I would NOT PRESUME to give the guy advice on how to kick ass in medical school since I'm not there, nor would I tell him how to succeed as a resident since I'm not there yet either. However, many many many conversations with adcoms all over the state/country have given me a pretty accurate idea of how the admissions process works, and I'm only giving him information that comes straight from the mouths of adcoms (Harvard, UTH, UTSW, Baylor, UTSA, TAMU, DMU, VCOM). Shall I go on?

But yeah, smarty pants, I know that which I speak of: I've already been accepted to at least one medical school for the coming year (DMU) and I'm trying to see what happens elsewhere.

If you have anything else you'd like to say, feel free to PM me and we'll handle this like adults. Otherwise STFU unless you have something positive to say.

To be honest, your EC's are awesome and your MCAT is okay, but your GPA kills. I would recommend a few things here:

1. Retake the MCAT. Try to score at least a 30 or above. This way, you'll be in the "competitive" range for MCAT scores.

2. TAKE MORE CLASSES. I know that its expensive, and its not what you want to hear, but how badly do you want to become a doctor? Applying with a 3.6 might not even get you into med schools these days. HOWEVER, in your case, bringing your GPA up to a 3.4 or 3.5 would seriously make things better for you. Also, keep applying every year to the Texas system; I know that UTMB tends to accept people who show dedication and persistence. However, if you take more classes, you have to show that you CAN make A's in them. It's important that doctors be intelligent. Unfortunately, no amount of kindheartedness can make up for a lack of intelligence.

3. Consider other careers in healthcare. These days, nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists are practically standing in for doctors at some practices and in some fields of medicine (gynecology for example). It's also easier to get into these programs. There are others ways to help people without being a medical doctor. Sure, the prestige may not be there, but ask yourself why you REALLY want to go to medical school in the first place.

4. Consider Caribbean and out-of-state osteopathic schools. I know a friend who got into the medical school at Grenada (in the Carib) last year with a 3.3-3.4 GPA and a 24 MCAT. It's a great school --beautiful as well. As far as osteopathy goes, If you're willing to go to UNT, I'd think that you'd be willing to go to an out-of-state osteopathic school.

Hope this helped, and best of luck to you. You seem like a very dedicated and passionate person, but started out on the wrong foot. Now it's time to prove that you CAN take the classes and do well at the same time....

I am currently a post-bacc student at UNT (undergrad degree from UT Austin) and I think their program is pretty good as well. My GPA from UT (and community colleges) was about a 3.5. While taking my pre-reqs for med school, I was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA to raise my overall to 3.68. So I definitely think you can raise your GPA into the low-mid 3 range (easier to raise a lower GPA). I took the MCAT last April right after (and during) taking all these science classes and was able to achieve a 30M. So don't despair!

Good luck and PM me if you have any questions about professors, the advisor, etc.

The main reason why I didn't apply to out of state schools is because of the out of state acceptance. I know that they usually only accept 5-10% of out of staters, so in order to be in competition for that, I need a stellar application, which I don't have. That's the main reason why I didn't apply out of state. As far as taking more classes, I'm in Houston right now, should I apply to UH and just take some extra science courses there, or maybe through a community college so I can save some money? Thanks for your help.

I was processed on 7/21 and I have only heard from TCOM and UTH. I am getting anxious too because I have not heard from the other schools--don't worry, you're not alone!

I'd enroll at UH, probably because the classes are more difficult there. Though enrolling at a community college would help you save money, med schools don't appreciate community college coursework because the classes are not very challenging (remember, you have some people who have taken all of their coursework at ivy leagues). That's the best that I can recommend....

Ah, I'm not so sure about the community college bias for pre-reqs. A friend of mine took ALL of her pre-reqs at a CC, got a 4.0, and was accepted to UTSW straight up.

Just my two cents about that.
