One fact that supports the Dean's comment is the average age of a matriculant at UTHSCSA (27 I think, MSAR). I believe it makes sense that nontraditional applicants in that age range will bring more to the table in terms of life experiences, which admissions considers important. Certainly there are many applicants immediately out of undergrad or older that do the same, many at UTHSCSA. Also, there are students at UTHSCSA that have very high GPA's and MCAT scores (40) and I bet they also had some great experiences.

According to the MSAR, the highest MCAT for the entering class of 2003 was a 35...

Indy's MCAT is well above this...

I don't remember where I read that there were a few students with super high MCAT scores (40) at UTHSCSA. The general point that I am making is that there are people with killer numbers at UTHSCSA. They also, however, have more to their app.

I was checking the TMDSAS application status page today, and I noticed there is no "C" for Complete on my Transcript section. On the description lines it says they got my college transcript several weeks ago, so...what does this mean? I haven't taken any classes outside of my current university, so they have everything they need. Should I call about this? Or will they smite me to the bottom of the pile for such an offense. I don't want my application sitting there because they are waiting on more transcripts that don't exist.

As I recall, mine didn't say "C" until I was procssed. Don't worry! 😎

Mine didn't say complete until it was processed either. As long as there's a date listed under "received", then they have it. Don't call them! They can be major jerks, and they have complete control over your app!

just got back from baylor interview. great people, great facilities, great oportunities. its now #1 on my personal list of schools. as for those worried bout not gettin a baylor interview yet, no worries. They arent a numbers school. they look at the entire application. im significantly below their average gpa and mcat.
so no worries. 🙂

After Friday, Baylor is my top choice too (although, I had kind of figured it would be). What an awsome school!!!! The curriculum, faculty, students, facilities, etc are just incredible. I'm hopin for the best on this one!

**HOPING FOR BAYLOR INVITE* with all of this very positive feedback! *Crossing fingers* 🙂

Evening. How's it going for everyone????

Random thought #44534: Getting early invites to TX schools (excepting Baylor) makes for a loooooooooooong wait until 1 Feb. In some ways, it might have been better to interview all in December/Jan. 😉

I got things cleared up with my LOR's on Thurs of last week and finally the status check says "complete". Has anybody heard anything from them recently? If so, how long after your status said complete. Also, if you do have an interview, does it show up on the status page?

My friend just got an email on Friday from them for an interview and it was almost mid-August when she was processed.

Thanks! 🙂

Well that's motivating. Hopefully we'll hear from Tech this week. :luck:

Hey, do you think A&M would mind if I changed my interview date? I already committed to an interview somewhere else on the date they gave me.

*Email for interview on 8/31

Thanks txguy!! That's really helpful...at least I will have some timeframe to gauge myself. Are you going to drive that way or fly? I was looking at mapquest *just in case* and it's 9 1/2 hrs. from Nac-a-nowhere. *If I do get a Tech interview*, I will probably opt to fly if it isn't so expensive.

Also, do they have med student hosts and a night before social?

I'm a MSI at Tech. We do have student hosts and possibly a night before social though I don't know the specifics on that. I thought I remember someone talking about it a couple of weeks ago.

I finally snagged my first interview.. Tech on 10/13..Is anyone else going to be in Lubbock then??

Hey Ya'll,
Hope Interviews are going well. My name is George Alsop and I'm a MS2 at UTMB.
I'm President of The Phi Beta Pi Fraternity and a friend of mine who was applying this year told me about this site and asked me to put up a post telling ya'll that you can have a free night's stay at the Fraternity House before your interview at UTMB. We've already had a few guys stay with us and it'll give you a unique insight to UTMB and Med School life in general. The Fraternity System at UTMB is unique and is almost the opposite of what fraternities were like in college (Think more like the movie Nerds). We've got guys in the house that are in all phases of Med School and even a guy who's doing his Residency at UTMB so there will be lots of people to answer your questions. Our Fraternity usually places well in the various residencies and having guys right across the hall to study with helps out.
You should receive something in your interview packet with our contact info but my e-mail is [email protected] if you need to contact me. We're a block away from the school and right across from the Fieldhouse (rec center), and you can snag a free dinner if you make it to the house by 6.
Good luck on your interviews.
Back to Studying....

I am so excited 😀. After a few weeks with no love from any school I got my 3rd interview today to Texas A&M on 10/14. I might need to change the date, do you guys know if A&M is flexible with this?

thanks,

They have hosts, but there was no pre-interview social when I interviewed.

Btw, I also decided to fly--SWA has some pretty good deals 👍

Good luck! :luck:

They are flexible, I called them to change my date. They interview every Thursday until mid-December, excluding Thanksgiving.

Rant time --

I think I totally screwed up my chances at a Baylor interview... I'm very competitive there w/ my numbers, 3.6 gpa, 3.8 sci gpa, mcat significantly higher than their avg matriculated. Problem is, I had two, that's right two spelling mistakes in my secondary. I was complete with them at the end of July and tons of people have had interviews w/ them already with similar complete dates. According to the admissions dept, my file has already been reviewed and if I am given an invite I'll get an email etc...

How the hell did I end up with those mistakes you ask? Good question, my only answer is "I'm an idiot who doesn't deserve any interviews." I sent them an email with corrections thinking it might help more than it hurts to point out my own inability to spell correctly on something so freakin' important. Alas, twas not to be. Any advice on suicide methods? Just kidding, but I was really excited about applying there.

I wouldn't worry too much at this point. I would be really surprised if they held two minor spelling mistakes against you--considering it was input via the web and spell check is not an option. Well, maybe if you made some egregious error...like Bailor Skool of Medisin. Hopfuly, there moor concernd with content then with speling. 😉 Don't be so hard on yourself--It is still early and Baylor interviews all the way through February--stay positive!

it doesnt matter my friend. i was once in your shoes when i noticed some grammar/spelling mistakes in my stuff that i sent to some schools. but noone notices. its not like you wrote your responses in Spanglish or something. just chill. they want an overall feel for the type of person you are and a couple spelling mistakes will do absolutely nothing. especially since there are some schools who send out secondaries that have gramatically incorrect sentences on there all the time.

You guys are both right about one thing -- there ain't jack I can do about it now that's fer sure. It is possible I will still get an interview but the possibility fades with each day. I suppose the spelling thing doesn't matter much but that's the only reason I can think of they wouldn't send me an invite cause I'm just so damn good. Just kidding, obviously if my app was so convincing I'd have gotten an interview. Well, here's to all of us still waiting!! Mazeltoff and prost!

plus baylor just might be interviewing people just better than you. higher numbers and higher mcats and overall excellent harvaaaard type applicants. your time will come. so just chill till the next episode...

Guess who finished secondaries!

OK, so there was only two: TCOM (done sometime ago) and Southwestern (only recently decided to apply) and I guess Houston and Galveston don't require one.

Just waiting on one LOR to get to TMDSAS, and one letter to get to TCOM. 👍

Congrats to everyone who is/has been interviewing. I haven't been keeping up very well...🙁

Does anyone know if it is beneficial or will help your chances of being admitted to a school if you interview early. There has to be some benefit, just live DEVO said this waiting until feb 1st is killing me 🙂

Hello everyone...

I just got an invitation in the mail for a reception in Houston. Here's what it says:

Blah blah blah invite you to attend a reception for the TTU Medical School Alumni and applicants to the TTUSOM on Mon Oct 18

Did anyone else get on of these, and if you did, will you go???? 😕 Man, my hopes got up when I saw something in my mailbox from Tech. 😱

I've been wondering the same thing myself. All of the medical school books I have say that it does, but I think they are really referring to the schools on rolling-admissions--that is, the seats get filled up as the semester progresses so it gets more competitive as time goes by.

So besides Baylor, I wonder if the Texas schools fill their seats as the interview season progresses but of course don't tell us until February? Or perhaps it would be better to interview later and have the memory of your interview visit fresh on their minds as they make their "final" decision? Just
some fun things to talk about 🙂

I just took a few exams, so I have a little time to talk about things like this 😎

Geronimo's post is pretty interesting: (towards the bottom)

Anybody have any insights?

Hey I got the same invite today. What is this? I was so excited opening it up, and was disappointed that it wasn't an invite. I hope this means that we have invites on the way

They didn't do this last year. Are you a reapplicant? I hope everyone got one, not just reapplicants. :scared: Are you thinking of going?

Why would they invite applicants along with alumni? Two birds with one stone? Hmmm...

It's so funny how we jump to conclusions when wound up so tight.

This is my first time applying. I think you're right, it seems like they're trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. But why would they invite us to the reception if they haven't even given us interviews yet? I mean, if we don't get interview invites....that's just mean 🙁

Quick question:

On the Texas A&M essay question that asks you to "Describe any circumstances indicative of some hardship...," can I not answer this question? I really don't believe that, giving the criteria they listed as potential hardships, I have any hardships really worth discussing without saying something lame and stretched, such as the death of my pet gerbil has reinforced my drive to help the sick. What is your folks' take on this question? Thanks

AJ

I want one. 😛 Then again, if it's in the mail it will take a few days to get to Nac-a-nowhere.
