Indeed. One of the best football games in history. Didn't you get hte feeling that OSU must have felt like, "Where in the HELL did that train come from?"

At the halftime interview, the OSU coach looked oh-so-happy and confident. :meanie:

Also a good game was OU vs. TAMU. Too bad TAMU couldn't make it happen. 🙁

"Yea, toooo bad" 👍 😛 says the ex-okie.

Boomer Sooner 🙂 I hear Miami is great in January!

Asiandoc- I saw the incredibles as well, and thought it was really funny. I thought the lamb thing in the beginning was not as interesting but they can't all be winners. did you see a preview for Star Wars III? How do they keep sucking me in?

I need coffee.............. waiting for a suture removal then its caffiene baby!

I think the OSU coaches/players/fans probably felt like the UT coaches/players/fans when they play that "red cotton game." I think it is the one thats held in Dallas every year. Does anyone know what that game is called?

are you talking about the cotton bowl?

Hey everyone,

I have my first interview this Friday at UT-Houston and I will be staying with a medical student on Thursday night. I was wondering if any of you could suggest a good reasonable gift that a guy in medical school would want. I was thinking maybe a giftcard to Starbucks or something similar.

Thanks,
Lance

Yeah, it was sarcasm, but I thought it might go over peoples head. It is hard for words to relay the same meaning as actual talking.

I mixed "red rive shootout" with "cotton bowl"

Ah, don't give a gift. It might come off weird.

However, if you must, then I suggest a gift certificate to amazon.com or something. Good luck on Friday!

I agree with evo, a gift may be weird. The only gifts I think that wouldn't be weird would be a bottle of wine, a 6-pack of good beer or a bottle of some decent booze. Instead of a gift, I'd say buy the student a meal. If he/she doesn't have time, get them a gift certificate to scrubs n' more or cold stone or some other place that may be useful, it'll fill their little med student heart with delight.

Oh, and one more thing, if you show up early enough on Friday night, go to the med student social. Not very many interviewees show up, so it ends up being like 3 med students per interviewee. Great time to ask questions in a very chill atmosphere and really get a feel for the type of students who are at the school. I found it to be almost as informative as the interview day itself. Also, a couple of the med students I met at the social showed up at lunch on interview day to see how I was faring, which I thought was pretty cool. Late

As someone who's hosted students before, I think a little gift would be nice. I would suggest a starbucks gift card.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm definately going to the social on Thursday afternoon if I don't get caught in traffic on my way up there. Are there any other SDNers out there interviewing this Friday in Houston too? I'd like to finally put a face with a screen name. I know UT-Lilly is going.

Hey everyone. I've been struggling to rank the schools I have interviews at. One thing that might be influential in my rankings is standardized patient facilities at the school. Some of the schools (TAMU) don't seem to have it, while others (UTMB, UTHSCSA) do. I know standardized patients are on the boards...do you think a med student would be at a disadvantage if they attend a school that doesn't have it? Please, correct me if I'm wrong about which schools have the facilities....this is soooo hard!! 👎

I have no idea what to do about my situation at Tech: I called Thursday because they said they were still missing one of my LORs and the lady I talked to told me to call back on Monday. So i called her back about an hour ago and she told me they do not have the LOR and when she talked to TMDSAS they did not have it there either (even though on my profile it says it was received on 8/10 at TMDSAS). SO of course I am having a heart attack because that means that I am also incomplete at all the other TX schools (I have interviewed at all of them except Tech) and so I'm thinking to myself that I won't get in at any shcool cause of the missing LOR. Then my boss suggested that I call or email TMDSAS to make sure the info is correct and I emailed them (cause after their big warning page message I am scared to call them) and whoever responded said that they have all my LORs and do not know why the woman would tell me that they didn't. So my question is now do I call back Tech and speak with someone else about my problem and let them know that TMDSAS says they have my LOR or do I just let it be? I don't know if I want to go to Tech but this is my second time applying and I just feel the more schools I interview at the better my chances of matching. I don't even know if I would get a Tech interview even after my app is complete but I think that I should at least try. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I would call one or two of the schools where you interviewed and ask if they have your LORs on file. If they do, then all of your other schools do also.

Call Tech again and explain your situation. I don't know why she would say TMDSAS doesn't have your letter either.

If Tech doesn't have it, just get TMDSAS to send the letter or get it sent directly from your University's office. There is no reason to be scared to call TMDSAS at this point, your file has long been processed. You aren't being put in the back of the line or anything.

But yeah, call Tech ASAP, every interview counts. A lot of people have good numbers and have to "settle" for TTU. It's a good school though, it is worth the trouble to get it fixed.

Hey Bright Star! It's been awhile since we've heard from you! I had a very similar problem. I ended up having to call all of the schools to make sure they had them. If they didn't I had to ask if they would call TMDSAS and request another copy since TMDSAS said they had mine as well. They also told me they sent them, but funny how not a single school recieved them. Tech I had to call a few times to get it all straightened out. Somehow, they were able to send them electronically and 2 days later - interview invite! Don't worry about calling too much b/c the responsibility of making sure the schools have everything is up to you. TMDSAS and the schools can't be relied on when they have soooo many applications. I wish the best of luck to you.

I don't know if I asked you when I met you in Houston, but what schools did you interview at last year?

Good luck and I hope it all works out! 🙂

post gym, post lunch sleepiness.

I wish it was warm.

You have it a little wrong and a little right. The wait list goes like this: If you are waitlisted at your #3 and wait listed at #2, then become eligible for #2. You are given a time period to choose between the two. once you do, then the other falls off. If you were waitlisted at #1, your still eligible.

So, the ranking system is still itact. If you were waitlisted.

What does your Tech status page show?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I called tech up again and told my story to a different lady and she said she would chek up on it and to give her a call back in an hour. So hopefully it will work out. And I have heard great things about Tech which is why I would like to go interview there. I didn't think I would like A&M as much as I did so I am all about giving every school a chance.

SFAJess - i know it's been a while since I've been on here. My spanish class is kicking my butt and I am doing a project at work. I applied to UT-Houston and UTSW the first time around along with some out of state schools. But I never heard anyhting back from any of the UT schools.

So for those of you who already have an acceptance to an out of state school, what are you doing in regards to making a deposit to another school and waiting for the Feb. 1 decision?

I have an acceptance to AZCOM but I would like to know about my chances at the two TX schools that I have interviewed at before I lay down some major deposit money.

...ugh...that wait till Feb. 1 is grueling.

the deposit to azcom isnt refundable?

Well, not really. I think only $100 of it is refundable. Fortunately with AZCOM, the intial deposit is only $250 but for other schools it is more, up to $2000 and most likely not refundable.

This is the case for most of the DO schools, so I am not sure if this is the case for the MD schools too.

Congrats! Where did you see that bit of info on the status page?

But my point is what happens AFTER June 15 if someone leaves the Texas system and leaves a spot vacant? No one bumps up and according to what I understand, there are no wait list spots after that date??? Just trying to understand here.

To my understanding, you can still be offered a spot after June 15. I think waitlists are locked after June 15 (you can only be on one), so you can still get off a waitlist up until the day classes start (this has happened before).

I sent in a $100 deposit to Saint Louis....if I decide not to go, it is refundable. I think that's how most of the MD schools are, seeing as how some people already have 5 or more acceptances (look on the acceptance thread)!

its happened MANY times. I had a friend find out the day before the white coat ceremony that he had gotten in to SA. He was already in at Tech. So tech opened up a spot when he went to SA.

I went to the tech status page but their dates for materials received is off. Like they said that they just got my secondary application but on the other tech status page that's linked to the secondary application page it says that I submitted it like two months ago. Also they only had one letter of reccommendation listed on the status page but I had four LOR's. Did this kind of stuff happen to other people? Should I be worried?

If I had a packet of LOR's with four LOR's in it send to TMDSAS and they have it on my profile as complete do they send all of the letters or only two of the letters?

I'm not sure how completely accurate that status page is either. It listed the last date of receiving my mcat as august (when everything else was processed), which made me think that they hadn't received my new august score, so I called them and they assured me that they had everything and was complete. I would just call them...the lady on the phone was nice.

On my status page, the "Medicine Letter of Reference" is too just listed once. I think it refers to the packet of letters. But again, if you want to be sure just call.

I had never actually called a school before today...b/c I was scared they would yell at me :scared: but it sure does alleviate many of your worries. Next week I'll brave it up to call the only other school I'm waiting for...UTMB.

Congrats on your TAMU invitation ajnak!!! Haha, they put all the names in the email! I guess I'll see you 12/2! 🙂

are you from texas? i just saw your recent posts re: vandy (congrats, by the way!). i'm pretty sure a rejection letter from them is on it's way to my house. i'm from dallas, so don't think i'll be trading you my UTSW for your vandy. if you're not from texas, that may be why you haven't heard yet--but i'm sure you will!!

Officially, I am not from Texas, but I have lived here for the past four years, (still not a "resident" for application purposes) I appliedto both MD and MSTP to USTW, my first choice school, hoping it would improve my chances at an interview, but all it has done is slow things down because the MD program doesn't even get to touch my application until MSTP is finished with it.

I hope to hear by the end of the month if I got the MSTP interview, but that only leaves me with Jan 8th for the MD interview if I don't the the MSTP interview. I wish I hadn't even sent in the MSTP application. (But MD/PhD is a pretty sweet deal)

I will just wait paitently. Remeber, this is a week filled with good news, so everyone keep smiling. 🙂

Hey everyone,

I've got a dilemma here. I know i've posted a couple times about the stay with a medical student this Friday in Houston, but I haven't heard from the guy yet. I've written him two emails and still haven't gotten a response. Would it be rude to write him again and just let him know that I'm going to get a hotel room instead? I just don't want to end up waiting till the last minute to hear something.

Tough call. If I were you, I would give him until tomorrow morning, ~noon, if he still hasn't confirmed anything, call the school and ask them what they think you should do. They might want you hook you up with another host.

Still waiting on UTMB myself. The other schools have all contacted me, so I'm not sure what's happening. I think I'll call them this evening to see what's up. The worst they can say is "silly insect, what made you think yourself worthy of our school?!" This would of course be followed by several painful seconds of evil laughter. I'll let you know how it goes.
