TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, I was wondering, once I update my match list on the TMDSAS site, does that change reflect in the "master file update" on the profile page? If I change my list today, will it show "010605" on the profile? Stupid question, I know, but I'd like to know. Thanks!

Bright Star,
I'm in DFW too! Neoncandle made a post about having a get together after match, but I'm the only one who responded to it I think... I'll find it and bump it, then maybe more people will respond...

Screw love!!! Put UTHSCSA back up on the top. Now!!!

1. UTMB (love the hours for classes - or lack thereof)
2. UTSW
3. UTH
4. UTSA
5. TAMU
6. TT - no way!

1. UTH
2. UTMB
3. Texas A&M -> I really liked this program but I'm way too liberal for College Station.
4. UTSW
5. UTSA
6. TCOM

I keep changing my mind. However, I think all of the TX schools are good so we'll all get a great education no matter where we end up.

1. UTSW

3. UTMB

i wouldve ranked galveston over houston in terms of the school itself, but i just dont think i could live in galveston.

Yeah, where are you going to find hamsters to feed cocaine to in Galveston (hehe, inside joke).

🙂 I really would like to....I guess we all have to make sacrifices for some point. He stayed where I was for grad school so now it's my turn. I really liked TAMU too....I just like SA better. I have a feeling though that I might not match to TAMU...they just accept so few people. So there's still a chance that I'll be back in SA!!

something tells me the cocaine will be easy to find, though. there are too many people there who have GOT to be bored out of their mind.

LOL, just worried that my car will get vandalized from all of the anti George "Dubya" stickers that I have plastered all over it. It fits in nicely in the liberal mecca of Atlanta but I suspect would not be liked in College Station.

Seriously, though, is anyone else having trouble choosing between UTH and UTMB? I really like the curriculum at UTMB and while Galveston is not where I plan to settle permanently, I could deal with it. However, I think UTH will have the better experiences during the clinical years. Any suggestions? I've been delaying this decision for a while but now I need to make it.

This may be a really dumb question. But where do i go to fill out my fafsa?

wow...I think I asked this EXACT same question earlier in this thread earlier...it's been like a month and I still haven't been able to find an answer..if you find it, lemme know! I'm thinking of putting UTH over UTMB as of today, but that may all change come tommorow...

good luck guys

Hey guys, it could be worse. I am currently experiencing a three-way tie between UTSW, UTMB, and UTHSCSA. And we only have ONE MORE WEEK left to finalize our decisions. I guess that I could look at this another way....I'd probably be very satisified if I got into any of those three schools, which makes this ranking thing completely frustrating and annoying! Cheers....I'll see some of you guys tomorrow at Two Rows.

I've been joking about ranking based on the food.

I struggled for weeks and literally lost sleep over my UTMB/San Antonio choice. My dilemna was/is that I like the school aspects of UTMB more but love the city of San Antonio. If UTMB were located in San Antonio it would have been a no-brainer, but nothing is ever that easy.

I tried making lists of pros-cons for each school and really trying to reason through the decision. I eventually gave up and decided to go with where my gut says I would be happier. I ranked the schools one way on TMDSAS, slept on it, then changed it, trying to figure out which one "felt better". The answer eventually came to be San Antonio, so that is what I am going with. Whether my ranking has any bearing on where/if I get in remains to be seen. I know this sounds too emotional for most pre-med type people (i know, i am one) but i believe it is better to go with what feels best at a visceral level, as opposed to school rankings, board scores, etc. My current and final ranking is:

1. San Antonio
2. UTMB
3. Tech
4. Houston

Yeah, I have a longhorn decal on my car and whenever I go home to visit my parents in College Station, I'm afraid of vandalism as well (esp game days). I actually had a friend who had a longhorn sticker on her car, and when we were inside a restaurant, someone ripped off the horns. You know, saw em off 🙄 ! We knew it was a bunch of dumb, drunk aggies. Gag em iggies 👎 ! LOL :meanie:

Me too! I can't decide between UTSW and UTHSCSA. Totally different feel at each of the schools but I like them both equally. I tried to talk to friends and family about it, but all they say is that it's up to me...thanks guys! 🙄 What to do? HELP!

if any of yall have any last minute questions about UTHSCSA, feel free to PM me or find me on AIM (lanewwpc)

Congratulations on making a fine decision. See everyone, just follow your instincts, your gut. You will arrive at the same conclusion.

we can't all go to the same school, man.

Why not?? At least all those that interviewed at UTHSCSA. Evo will be there with me. We could all form this huge clique and sit in the back corner of the lecture hall wearing SDN tees. I cannot think of anything more intimidating.

I don't know about the t-shirt thing though. I'm too cool to admit I use the internet.

Yah, I was wondering that too. Maybe we should do a little research on the TMDSAS website.

I think all you have to do is click the save button. When I go back to look at them, they are exactly as I entered them earlier.

Is it just me, or is this waiting getting more painful as the end approaches?

Hey guys, hope interviews went well with you all... 😀

I have a question for you guys...as of rite now I have ranked my schools the following way:

1.UTSW
2.UT-Houston
3.UTMB
4.UTSA
5.A&M
6.Tech 😱

I'm not sure if I should rank UTMB over UT-Houston however...what criterion are most of u guys using to finalize ur rankings? Also, in terms of ranking or "prestige" of the Texas schools is there really a difference between schools like UT-Houston and UTMB? I heard UT-Houston is kind of stressful whereas UTMB is really chill...I'm really stuck between these two...any feedback would be helpful thanks!

are you guys nervous?

don't mind me, I'm just gloating. 😀

My criterion is: if a school gave me an interview, then I picked it as my first choice. But that may not work for most people...

Seriously though I had a friend who graduated from Southwestern and she said that when she applied to out of state residencies she was frustrated that the programs did not distinguish between any of the UT system medical schools. Maybe that was just her experience...But as far as Texas residencies go, no clue as to the pecking order (other than Baylor and Southwestern of course.)

I just don't understand why people put so much emphasis on how OTHER people feel about particular medical schools. ALL of the Texas med schools are amazing, and honestly, all of them are lumped together (even Baylor) when you are applying for residencies (particularly out of state).

When you get out in the real world, ie, finish residencies, etc, you're going to learn that "the only place that matters is the last place you go to" (fellowship/ residencies). The way you GET those residencies, and ultimately get the primo job you want, is through your board exams, clinical evaluations, and to some extend, med school grades.

This means you find the place that YOU would succeed best at/ make the best impressional with your attendings/ whoever is writing your evaluations. Where you get into residency will have much more to do with your own personal abilities than ANY perceived importance your school has, inside or outside of Texas.

So good luck, but don't let anyone else (the SDN crew, your friends, your family, etc) influence your decision on where you rank - cuz you'll just resent them (and yourself) later.

PS - I like the idea of ranking a place first based on whether they gave you an interview or not. right on!

Looks like there will be a new dean for all of us going to UTHSCSA:

Steven A. Wartman, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president for academic
and health affairs at the University of Texas Health Science Center at
San Antonio and dean of the school of medicine, will become president of
the Association of Academic Health Centers, effective July 1.--AAMC

they just sent us the announcement about a week ago - it'll be interesting to see who they find to fill the position.

our dean of student affairs is also retiring in april, but they've had a very active interview process going since ~october. all of the candidates were great so i have no doubt they can find a superb replacement for dr. wartman too.

Those 3 are all great schools, so it's a tuffy. I'm sure anyone who studies hard and knows how to take care of themselves can succeed at any of them. Have you talked to current students about residency match statistics, board scores, and non-academic well-being?

So the tough soul-searching questions: do you like UTSW because everyone thinks it's hard to get into? Do you like UTHSCSA because you want your dad to be proud that you got accepted at the same place he went to? Do you like UH because it's associated with the medical institution that's got the highest recognition outside of Texas (M.D. Anderson) &/or it's in a city you are more comfortable with?

They are tough/ slightly unfair questions, but hopefully you've already faced them yourself.

You have more than likely already picked your top school by now (even subconsciously), so the answer is not as hard as you think. Just find the place you'd fit in the best - where you know the academics mirror how you succeed, where you can get the attention/ services you need, how the school might fit with your private life.

It's very interesting how UTHSCSA has been going through a lot of transitions this year. But, come to think about it, most of the Texas schools have undergone a lot of changes lately. VERY innnnteresting. 😎

As someone attending residency out of state, I can assure you that people have no idea about schools in texas. Just that there are some and thats about it. There is no difference in the minds of most people. they know the schools are good and thats about it.

Most people have no idea how many schools are there. And they definately don't know which ones are associated with what hospital.

Someone initially put me as UTSW and I had to reprimand them! I gave a most definate, NOT from SW. To most people here, all the schools are the same, in some vast state that some of the people have flown through.

Thank you, fotolith, for all of your advice. First of all, UTH is not one of my top three....I think you meant to say UTMB. Second of all, my problem is that I've been talking to TOO MANY medical students from each of these schools. I have close friends who go to UTSW (my old roomie), UTMB (my boyfriend's best friend), and UTHSCSA (my good friend whom I've known since 9th grade). In addition, I talked to many of the medical students on tours, student panels, and during the interview day in general. I've gotten a better idea of how I'll rank the schools after I made that one post, and since I interviewed at UTMB in August, I am revisiting Galveston on Wednesday to see if it would even be feasible for me to live there!

A note about UTSW--I went into the interview thinking, "Okay, this school is probably not all that it's hyped up to be. I don't think I'd really want to go to school here, so I'm just gonna relax during my interviews." However, I was pleasantly surprised when I interviewed there; in fact, UTSW was my most memorable and positive interview experience. I think that others who interviewed at UTSW can attest to the fact that they sold their school very well on interview day. They truly made each of us feel valued, welcome, and special. That being said, my reasons for liking UTSW are not because it's difficult to get into, nor because of the prestige it holds. Like I said, I was pretty opposed to the school up until the day I interviewed.

Anyway, this is my rant for the day. I should be finalizing my decision any day now....
