Could anyone explain to me how scholarships work in the UT match system? I know that a couple of these schools have some serious money to hand out, but apparently, they can't make a scholarship offer until you've been accepted. Does this mean until after the match? If so, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard -- a little money could make a lot of difference in how people rank the schools.

I would assume so, unless you applied to an early decisson program. According to the system, the school is not supposed to disclose any information about your status with the school untill Feb. 1st.

I actually asked about this at UTMB and was told that they don't hand out scholarships until the financial aid office receives notice that you are accepted. I said, "But that's after the Match right? Sooo, then having a scholarship can't figure into our ranking decisions?" "Hmm," she replied, " I never really thought about it, but I guess you're right."

System helps the schools, but not us on that count.

wow. so are certain schools known for doling out the $$? or do we just guess on that account? holly's right - it would be a pretty major factor for me in deciding where to rank the schools.

Id imagine all the financial information would come after FAFSA has been submitted, meaning at earliest in Feb, after the match.

For merit scholarships, Im not so sure.

To be honest, I think most of the merit scholarships are for out-of-staters to bring the costs down. I think the bulk of all scholarship, however, are out of need or race.

Im curious about this too, though its not going to affect my ranking at all, since its likely we wont find out any info until after the match anyway.
