Just picked up my mail and found the acceptance packet from Tech!!!
Just picked up my mail and found the acceptance packet from Tech!!!
Congrats! See you in a few months.
Thanks..you too! Are you on the facebook group?
I have 2 questions about the packet:
1. The Criminal Background Check-do we just sign the page going over it? There was no place to sign and date. Or is there some other form on their site that I need to download?
2. Can we send the $100 deposit with the acceptance or do we have to wait until after feb 16th?
Thanks in advance
1- I haven't done the CBC yet- that's on my to-do list after this 2 weeks of test hell lol
2- I sent mine in with my acceptance
Hey there! Where is the CBC? I would like to send everything out all at once if possible!
thats the criminal background check- and if I recall correctly it is done online and the web address is in the acceptance packet somewhere- I was recovering from surgery when I got mine so I haven't done it yet and don't remember exactly- apparently I was even loopier than I remember according to my friends!
Thanks. I will save the CBC for another day. I took care of everything else and already have it in the mail! I just received my W2 today from work, so now I need to get the FAFSA done quickly. Then sell the house. Always a new monumental task ahead!
What is it with you and frat boys? 🙄
I don't entirely hate frat boys. They are just trying to get by like anyone else, and the way they behaved got them the maximum mating opportunities. I fully understood why they did what they did.
But I feel a lot better knowing that while life isn't fair, some of those douches will suffer consequences for their bad karma and all their late night drinking. Those 2.0 GPAs aren't going to make it easy for them to get into a top 10 MBA program and get on the track to the corporate boardroom.
They won't be failures...they'll be middle management at some oil company desk job. They'll commute to work from their suburban houses, while their former sorority chick wife pumps out babies with 105 IQs...
Who will grow up to be high school jocks, and then frat boys....and you can see where this is going...
Oh! about the scribes service, can I be part even if i can't type fast enough to save my life? I use one finger.
yes, we'll need lots of people! it's ok, essentially you'll record the lecture and then type it exactly (word for word) later on your own time using the recording.... (haha, yes: play, hurrytypetypetype--AH!i'mbehind, pause, rewind, repeat) 😀
The short answer : when i was in undergrad, I was probably the most stressed out premed in Texas. The reason was that I was doing pretty well (3.8 from 2001 on) but I had prior Fs from my first semester of college. Meaning, I'd basically lost the race before I even got out of the starting gate. Nothing I did could ever repair the GPA damage, and so I was perpetually worried. I think doing well made me feel worse. It would be like starting the Indy 500 after the first few hundred laps, and discovering that your pit crew has tuned your car to be so fast that it would have easily won the race.
Meanwhile, all the cute girls were in sororities, and I quickly figured out that the fraternities were 'gangs' designed to make their members look good to these girls at the expense of everyone else. So I found that frat boys were perpetual douches whenever I tried to talk to em (naturally, I wanted to know how they could attract all the hot women). You could join their gang, but you had to go through hazing and learn all this semi-racist **** to join their 'elite' organization. And drink beer by the keg...
Yes, there were less extreme fraternities, but those groups never had a frathouse or any women. They'd just be like 5 asian business majors hanging out in some dinky office somewhere.
So you'd see every hottie on campus hanging out with frat boys every day as I trudged my way to organic lab or some other worthless class.
So I always felt like a failure. Only if I ever got into med school, something that appeared to be impossible, would I ever even be a reasonable success. Otherwise, my bio degree would be worth toilet paper. While these tools all had various connections and trust funds and other advantages. And they certainly had every advantage in the eyes of the sorority sluts...
I started noticing after a while how other inherent advantages put the frat boys ahead. They'd always be a ridiculous amount taller than me, louder, buffer(big shoulders + beer guts lol). In evolutionary biology, I read about how when these reptiles mate, the biggest reptile gets like 30 females and all the little guys get none. I could see this happening in action....
While I wasn't in a frat myself, you will have a sizeable portion of your class that were in fraternities/sororities.
Congrats to everyone getting their packets! I was so excited about mine
Does anyone here play volleyball? I played on a competitive team and I think it would be awesome to have a med student intramural team!

I'll have no problem with them so long as they don't act like these guys :
The girl I stayed with at my Tech interview played intramural volleyball with some of her classmates the night I was there. 🙂
Does anyone know of any good housing websites to find apts/houses in Lubbock?]
www.westmarkrealtors.com
then link to rental properties. Pretty reasonable house/duplex prices
Is definitely going to require some shopping. Some of those prices were ludicriously low. Like, $350 for renting what appears to be a very small house. Or really high. Absolutely no way to tell what is a reasonable deal without exploring on the ground.

But it seems like the 3 bedroom houses are by far the best deals. http://www.westmarkrealtors.com/rental_properties/detail/3104-B-109 . Like this one looks nice. And if you divide that rent by 3, that comes to $350 a person.
If you go it alone, $395 per person gets you something like this : http://www.westmarkrealtors.com/rental_properties/detail/1717-48-104
Uggh, I wouldn't take a prostitute to a motel that looked that shoddy...
last post I promise 😉 Does anyone know when the 100 bucks is due? I got in via pre-match and told myself "i'll do that later" but now I have to go dig for my paperwork.
POWERLIFTING anyone?!?I would LOVE to have another med student to lift/work out with. I didn't start lifting weights until I was 21 so it's never too late to learn. It's GREAT for your body (more muscle = more (err...) metabolism?) In any case it's super fun. You can see some of my pictures on my facebook. Tech has a collegiate team (just a club sport) so I might go join them too.
Change of plans. I know what I'm doing this summer!
Lubbock, and Texas in general has a high population of Spanish speakers. I don't know a word of the language, but I think I would be a better medical student during clinicals, and a better doctor, if I spoke at least some Spanish. It would be both less frustrating when I had to take an H&P and the translators were nowhere to be found, and from a more mercenary perspective, I'd probably look better in the eyes of the people evaluating me.
And I need a vacation...as anyone who has read my previous posts know, I really need a vacation. But, like most premeds, funds are limited. But not zero, I could spare the $3k-$4k this program would cost.

It's 4-8 weeks in a Latin American country, with instruction in medical spanish and immersion in the language.
I'm a skinny nerd, but I genuinely want to get into shape. I think someone who is dedicated to weight training could be an excellent choice for roomate.
It would certainly be easier to keep the nutrition straight if my roomate(s) were also on a similar diet.
Also, cardio is so boring, and if we managed to rent one of those houses that is 2-3 miles from the school, we could bike to class. Get in a 20-30 minutes of light cardio a day that way, and save on gas and wear and tear on cars.

For some people roommates work well, but I calculated the difference after 4 years of living by myself vs. with a roommate and for me i don't want to risk it. I've had good roommates but i've also had HORRIBLE roommates.
... With the stress of med school I don't want to add the stress of a roommate...so perhaps that is why other people are looking at 1 bedroom's also.
👍 completely agreed.
(.. maybe if i could fnd a man to agree to have a 1950's TV marriage with separate bedooms 🙄)
May I ask why some of you guys are going for the more expensive housing? Aka 1 bedroom apartments or similar? I've never lived in Lubbock, and I kind of like the idea of getting a decent spot for $200 less per month, as that's $2400 a year I could spend on something else.

in my limited experience, guys tend to be more tolerant of roomates, though, so habeed you might be just fine with a couple other guys...
but i'll be honest: though i consider my self to be pretty compassionate/tolerant/etc., i'm pretty selfish when it comes to my space and time!!! 😳
(haha, the thought of marriage and forever sharing a bathroom and a bedroom(!!!!) and being constantly in each others space, kinda freaks me out... maybe if i could fnd a man to agree to have a 1950's TV marriage with separate bedooms 🙄)
