This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have 2 questions about the packet:

1. The Criminal Background Check-do we just sign the page going over it? There was no place to sign and date. Or is there some other form on their site that I need to download?

2. Can we send the $100 deposit with the acceptance or do we have to wait until after feb 16th?

Thanks in advance

1- I haven't done the CBC yet- that's on my to-do list after this 2 weeks of test hell lol

2- I sent mine in with my acceptance

Hey there! Where is the CBC? I would like to send everything out all at once if possible!

thats the criminal background check- and if I recall correctly it is done online and the web address is in the acceptance packet somewhere- I was recovering from surgery when I got mine so I haven't done it yet and don't remember exactly- apparently I was even loopier than I remember according to my friends!

Thanks. I will save the CBC for another day. I took care of everything else and already have it in the mail! I just received my W2 today from work, so now I need to get the FAFSA done quickly. Then sell the house. Always a new monumental task ahead!

Good luck with all that!

I am off to bed now

What is it with you and frat boys? 🙄

The short answer : when i was in undergrad, I was probably the most stressed out premed in Texas. The reason was that I was doing pretty well (3.8 from 2001 on) but I had prior Fs from my first semester of college. Meaning, I'd basically lost the race before I even got out of the starting gate. Nothing I did could ever repair the GPA damage, and so I was perpetually worried. I think doing well made me feel worse. It would be like starting the Indy 500 after the first few hundred laps, and discovering that your pit crew has tuned your car to be so fast that it would have easily won the race.

Meanwhile, all the cute girls were in sororities, and I quickly figured out that the fraternities were 'gangs' designed to make their members look good to these girls at the expense of everyone else. So I found that frat boys were perpetual douches whenever I tried to talk to em (naturally, I wanted to know how they could attract all the hot women). You could join their gang, but you had to go through hazing and learn all this semi-racist **** to join their 'elite' organization. And drink beer by the keg...

Yes, there were less extreme fraternities, but those groups never had a frathouse or any women. They'd just be like 5 asian business majors hanging out in some dinky office somewhere.

So you'd see every hottie on campus hanging out with frat boys every day as I trudged my way to organic lab or some other worthless class.

So I always felt like a failure. Only if I ever got into med school, something that appeared to be impossible, would I ever even be a reasonable success. Otherwise, my bio degree would be worth toilet paper. While these tools all had various connections and trust funds and other advantages. And they certainly had every advantage in the eyes of the sorority sluts...

I started noticing after a while how other inherent advantages put the frat boys ahead. They'd always be a ridiculous amount taller than me, louder, buffer(big shoulders + beer guts lol). In evolutionary biology, I read about how when these reptiles mate, the biggest reptile gets like 30 females and all the little guys get none. I could see this happening in action....

I don't entirely hate frat boys. They are just trying to get by like anyone else, and the way they behaved got them the maximum mating opportunities. I fully understood why they did what they did.

But I feel a lot better knowing that while life isn't fair, some of those douches will suffer consequences for their bad karma and all their late night drinking. Those 2.0 GPAs aren't going to make it easy for them to get into a top 10 MBA program and get on the track to the corporate boardroom.

They won't be failures...they'll be middle management at some oil company desk job. They'll commute to work from their suburban houses, while their former sorority chick wife pumps out babies with 105 IQs...

Who will grow up to be high school jocks, and then frat boys....and you can see where this is going...

Man, just sit back and enjoy the major accomplishment that you have done. From someone that has been out in the real world for a decade, all this stuff you are worried about won't matter anymore. Just relax. You're young and there are plenty of fish in the sea for you.

I got mail from foster saying i was on their waitlist. I got pre-matched, chose my pre-match(Tech) and foster was last in my ranking, so i wonder why?

Oh! about the scribes service, can I be part even if i can't type fast enough to save my life? I use one finger.

yes, we'll need lots of people! it's ok, essentially you'll record the lecture and then type it exactly (word for word) later on your own time using the recording.... (haha, yes: play, hurrytypetypetype--AH!i'mbehind, pause, rewind, repeat) 😀

Except if you have an IBM model M keyboard and use all 10 fingers...

Then it's a machinegun of CLICKETY CLACKETY CLICKETY CLACKETY (pause) CLACKETY CLICKETY CLACKETY

While I wasn't in a frat myself, you will have a sizeable portion of your class that were in fraternities/sororities. I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience at your school, but I wouldn't generalize like you did above. You may be burning bridges of some really great classmates.

Congrats to everyone getting their packets! I was so excited about mine

Does anyone here play volleyball? I played on a competitive team and I think it would be awesome to have a med student intramural team!

I'll have no problem with them so long as they don't act like these guys :

i'm in for any type of sports event: jack of all trades, master of none, that's me. but i LOOOVE SPORTS.

The girl I stayed with at my Tech interview played intramural volleyball with some of her classmates the night I was there. 🙂

Does anyone know of any good housing websites to find apts/houses in Lubbock?

Also, Does anyone if there is an area where alot of med. students live? Or even where relatively few Tech Undergrads live?

I bet you went up against them...talking mad trash just to ensure an acceptance. Everyone wants a rematch, right? :meanie: I played basketball in college and ran track... but I'm down for any type of intramural action. Also, I am definitely not super competitive anymore (unless we are playing the law school!)

Is definitely going to require some shopping. Some of those prices were ludicriously low. Like, $350 for renting what appears to be a very small house. Absolutely no way to tell what is a reasonable deal without exploring on the ground.

But it seems like the 3 bedroom houses are by far the best deals. http://www.westmarkrealtors.com/rental_properties/detail/3104-B-109 . Like this one looks nice. And if you divide that rent by 3, that comes to $350 a person.

If you go it alone, $395 per person gets you something like this : http://www.westmarkrealtors.com/rental_properties/detail/1717-48-104

Uggh, I wouldn't take a prostitute to a motel that looked that shoddy...

Housing seems very reasonable in Lubbock. I stayed with a student on my interview and she rented a 3 bed/2bath for about 550 per month. Pretty nice too. Texas real estate is a great bargain. Those who have lived elsewhere probably could testify to that!👍

The 52nd street neighborhood advertised is very decent.

So, do you think the best way is to have 2 roomates? I think if we were all med students in the same year, it could work out pretty well.

Here's a property that looks promising : http://www.westmarkrealtors.com/rental_properties/detail/2612-32

It's a reasonable looking house, 2300 square feet, $416 a person rent. Is 1.8 miles from the school's address.

Of course, could have just 1 roomate in this one http://www.westmarkrealtors.com/rental_properties/detail/3707-26 , would be $350 a person, and use the extra bedroom for an office. The other roomate would put their 'office' in the living room.

I have an idea : I'm planning on moving to Lubbock in June. I'll rent a spot somewhere just for June and July, and that will give me a chance to really shop around. If I could find one-two of you (guys) who wanted to be roomates with me, I could find us all an optimal deal.

I don't want to live in some place that looked good on the internet but is really quite crummy or overpriced. And, if I started hunting in June, I could probably find good housing that is closer to the school that might get snapped up by August.

Or, actually, the "Spring Training" is an even better time. I can't attend, but I'll throw down my checkbook to be the second or third roomate for you guys that do go to spring training.

Principals I'm looking for :
1. Housing should be close to school, ideally within easy biking range (about 2-3 miles)
2. Pricing should be reasonable per person, $350-$500 a person base rent (the reason for $350 minimum is that you generally do get what you pay for)
3. It should not be crummy or have any major deficits that would get old fast over the next year, or be located in a particularly bad area.

Once I found some good candidates, I'd snap a bunch of digital pictures of the place, and send them and a description of the place to my SDN 'partners'

I think I am going to go the 1bd route- I found a lot of options on www.lubbockapartments.com I am looking at several different complexes- I have heard Springfield is very nice and popular with med students (but rent is around 700)... I am going to look at a couple complexes friends have recommended- I have 2 that I am looking at that are around $550-$600 and include internet and/or cable.

I also have a friend with a house I could room with for cheaper I just am not sure yet

POWERLIFTING anyone?!? I would LOVE to have another med student to lift/work out with. I didn't start lifting weights until I was 21 so it's never too late to learn. It's GREAT for your body (more muscle = more (err...) metabolism?) In any case it's super fun. You can see some of my pictures on my facebook. Tech has a collegiate team (just a club sport) so I might go join them too.

oh and as far as housing goes, the student I stayed with lived in a 2/2 for something like 550 a month because she got a 100/month discount for being a medical student. it was in a fourplex, so if you are looking for housing you might want to see if they have "student deals"

last post I promise 😉 Does anyone know when the 100 bucks is due? I got in via pre-match and told myself "i'll do that later" but now I have to go dig for my paperwork.

I'm a skinny nerd, but I genuinely want to get into shape. I think someone who is dedicated to weight training could be an excellent choice for roomate.

It would certainly be easier to keep the nutrition straight if my roomate(s) were also on a similar diet.

Also, cardio is so boring, and if we managed to rent one of those houses that is 2-3 miles from the school, we could bike to class. Get in a 20-30 minutes of light cardio a day that way, and save on gas and wear and tear on cars.

May I ask why some of you guys are going for the more expensive housing? Aka 1 bedroom apartments or similar? I've never lived in Lubbock, and I kind of like the idea of getting a decent spot for $200 less per month, as that's $2400 a year I could spend on something else.

Change of plans. I know what I'm doing this summer!

Lubbock, and Texas in general has a high population of Spanish speakers. I don't know a word of the language, but I think I would be a better medical student during clinicals, and a better doctor, if I spoke at least some Spanish. It would be both less frustrating when I had to take an H&P and the translators were nowhere to be found, and from a more mercenary perspective, I'd probably look better in the eyes of the people evaluating me.

And I need a vacation...as anyone who has read my previous posts know, I really need a vacation. But, like most premeds, funds are limited. But not zero, I could spare the $3k-$4k this program would cost.

http://www.amerispan.com/pdf_files/salud/Salud_prices_2008.pdf

It's 4-8 weeks in a Latin American country, with instruction in medical spanish and immersion in the language.

shameless plug: Amerispan programs are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I lived in Thailand for 6months and while i was there i studied the Thai languge with Amerispan--I definately recommend them!!!!!!!!!!!

plus, those programs look AMAZING!!!

Pre-first-year SDN trip anyone? Habeed, that would be an incredible opportunity and I hope you get to go!!!

We're trying to decide whether to buy or rent.

We could buy and then rent it out to med students while I'm in residency elsewhere....and we have a decent down payment.

However, the economy sucks and jobs are not stable.

AH! So much to think about.

i'd be glad to help you with weights, but i'll let ya know i'm a girl so not the best roommate choice lol.

For some people roommates work well, but I calculated the difference after 4 years of living by myself vs. with a roommate and for me i don't want to risk it. I've had good roommates but i've also had HORRIBLE roommates. (in fact for the past few months i was throwing 350 bucks a month away since i couldn't stand living with my roommates but I couldn't find a subleaser...luckily i just got out of that). With the stress of med school I don't want to add the stress of a roommate...so perhaps that is why other people are looking at 1 bedroom's also.

👍 completely agreed.

in my limited experience, guys tend to be more tolerant of roomates, though, so habeed you might be just fine with a couple other guys...

but i'll be honest: though i consider my self to be pretty compassionate/tolerant/etc., i'm pretty selfish when it comes to my space and time!!! 😳
(haha, the thought of marriage and forever sharing a bathroom and a bedroom(!!!!) and being constantly in each others space, kinda freaks me out ... maybe if i could fnd a man to agree to have a 1950's TV marriage with separate bedooms 🙄)

AgShan- I might be interested in trying weights- I am very weak and used a personal trainer this summer (school provides them free) but he wanted me to powerlift and I ended up pulling a muscle in my shoulder and getting bursitis so I would be more into medium lifting

Habeed- I am going the 1 bd route for several reasons- the first is that I sacrificed through undergrad to keep my debt down and lived with parents... Also, I have heard too many stories about roomie issues so the only chance of me having a roommate is if it my 1 friend who lives in lubbock but I still am pretty sure I am going to enjoy the freedom.

Basically I ran the stats on living alone vs with the roomate and it isn't that different and it is doable within the budget they gave us at the interview. I am very social but I need my space and by living alone I think I can be more succcessful in school

i have lived with one to many crazy people! i've been out of undergrad for a few years and want to have a decent place that feels like "home." after this spring i hope to never have another roommate until we are sharing the same bed at night...a.k.a. a husband. lol.

i'm renting an apartment at springfield. since i live 2500 miles away i did the pre-lease and whatnot over christmas break. i'll be moving to lubbock in early july!

I called the office a few weeks ago for some other stuff and this came up... They'll send another letter to request it sometime around the middle of this month, so we don't have to send it until we receive that letter.

I'm *so* happy my fiance has a king-size bed, because that is the one place I HATE being crowded. =P I can deal with sharing everything else, but if we had a small bed that we were going to have to start sharing in July I'm not sure I could deal with it, haha.

Well, I guess it's finally time I register for the forums.

Looks like I will be headed to Lubbock in the fall. 👍
