I've heard that it is unneccesary and improper to send thank-you cards after an interview for dental school. What are your impressions? Did you send any? Are you planning on sending any?

I sent some.. I think it's appropriate.. don't think it can hurt that much... it's basically to remind them who you are and add in something that you've talked about with them or that you've enjoyed about their school... and to thank them for their time..

I sent Thank You cards. I don't see anything inappropriate about it.

I think actual "Thank you" cards might be a little cheesy, but maybe its me thats messed up. I prefer to go the email route. It is quicker and easier yet still gets the job done.

just send cash

nobody has taken the counterpoint yet, so here goes:

thank you cards aren't going to help you at all. if anything, you might come off as a little desperate. there's a myriad of factors that determine the quality of your application and postal courtesy isn't one of them. if it makes you feel better, go for it... but seriously, you've either got the good or you don't.

thank you

I guess I'm just old school, but I think Thank You notes are necessary for a situation such as this. It's one of those old fashioned displays of courtesy that shows you put some thought into getting and mailing a card rather than just an email that takes no effort whatsoever.

Same here. but again sometimes i wonder if even that was really necessary.

Well, I think it's just polite to send thank you notes. It doesn't necessarily give you an edge. I'm not sure if it's expected or not, but I sent them just to be safe. it can't hurt.

Thank-you notes following a professional interview (like a professional school entrance interview) are completely appropriate and show an awareness of professional etiquette.

Is it going to save a lousy application? Probably not. But it's a step in the right direction, and some people need every little nudge they can muster.

Hey Bill, Would you say a "thank you" email is enough? and also should you exepct a replay back from the person if you did sent an email??

Same here. I just want to be polite, and it won't hurt.

Thank you email is fine. Don't expect a reply because too many plp are sending out thank you cards, thank you letters, thank you emails... specially during this peak time.

Sending an email thank you card is basically saying, "hey, i wanted you to remember me but I'm too cheap to lick a 37 cent stamp to send you a card." A full on Thank you card is gay and would probably get laughed at by the entire admissions office. I suggest going down the middle and send a postcard of your school with a quick note of "thanks for your time...blah". I sent one after I met with a school last year when they did a informational visit and the guy said he was very appreciative of my postcard and thought it was very professional. Its up to you i guess..

😱 Are you people for real?

Yes you send thank-you cards/notes. It's professional etiquette and a no-brainer. If you have no intention on going to that school----you may still want to send one-----you never know if you'll cross paths again.

The fact that many students don't is exactly why you should----they are giving you a chance at a career that will make you millions, a wonderful lifestyle, a chance to help your fellow man, and an education no one can take from you------seems to me a quick note of thanks is appropriate.

I interviewed for my specialty program and sent a thank you note. The director of my program I was selected to said, "My wife really enjoyed your thank-you note----did you know you were the only one to send one! You obiviously have dotted all your I's and crossed all your T's.

And here is the kicker. A school I interviewed at and one I knew I wouldn't be going to for my specialty-----I sent a thank-you note. Just last week the director of that school was interviewing for becoming the director of my program!!!!!!! 😱 You never know when your paths will cross----better have the best first impression possible.

Perhaps since most of you are young and not exposed to the "real-world" you are blinded by peers----take it from me----a dentist and a former CEO of a company------send thank-you notes.

Good luck to all

Great point, Dr. B. In this age, it seems people have forgotten common courtesy.

Here's an idea, how about just sending a thank you note because you are thankful! Not because of what it will get for you.

If you didn't send a thank-you note, how late is too late to send one?

Let me ask you, incase I get any interviews, exactly how do you go about getting these people's mailing addresses to send them thankyou cards anyhow??? I do agree with you that the exact reason you should send em is because not everyone else is.... it separates you even that little extra inch... MAYBE...... but even if not, it's still worth it for piece of mind and professionalism.... I gave thankyou cards to all 3 of my professors who gave me letters of recommendation, every one of them came up to me after and thanked me for the card, they all said the same thing too...in my 20...15....etc years teaching, no one has ever just said thankyou, and it's nice to be appreciated... Im sure the adcoms receive tons of cards like that as compared to my professors, but it still cant hurt, only help.....

Just send it to the school's mailing address, with "Attn: Dr. ABC XYZ" beneath the school name.

Would you say doing both email and post card is overdoing it?

Normally yes. But in your case, you can send a👎 email, post card, and icecream cake. 😍

As the others have said a thank you letter is the norm after any professional interview. Furthermore, a thank you letter should be written anytime anyone takes time out of their busy day to do anything for you. Everyone here should have written a thank you letter to those whom wrote you a letter of reference, dentists that have allowed you to shadow ect, ect.

One thing that I do not think has been said it that they should be HAND WRITTEN on appropriate stationary. I does not need to be profound. Your book store should have what you need.

When you hand write something, it is 100x more personal than an email or even a typed letter. When you hand write something it says you took the extra time and care to do something personal.

If you need help writing letters, or in general professional etiquette, find the book: How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. One of the greatest books of all time.

Good Luck,

Oh I'm heading to the schnuckz across from your old apartment then to buy icecream and the "special" lemonade drink 😀

Wouldn't it look funny if you sent a thank you card after you've already sent your interviewer a thank you email a month passed your interview?

Super C, great book and great advice to read it... The title of the carnegie book makes it sound a little off beat, like what a loser, he needs to win friends, but it's really deceiving, and filled with amazing stories and info of how to get someone to think like you do.. Matter of fact, im going to get it out again and give it another read before my interviews If i get any interviews) now if there was only a rendition version on how to do good on the dat an influence adcoms..lol. hehehe...

I agree with you 100 percent. It's a great book. I read it when i was 12. I didn't understand half of it at that time.

I think thank-you cards are a great idea. but what if you already sent an email.. should you also send a card?

What kind of cards have you guys been sending? postcards or actual thank-you cards?

After my interview, the school mailed me a card saying that it was a huge mistake that they invited me for an interview.

i have the same question .. like for BU .. do you write, dear dr.shaw, dr.polins, etc.. or just dear admissions committee?

Can someone suggest a good place to buy these "thank you" cards? All the cards that I've seen (with the thank you title) are sooo cheezy!

Try the Office Depot near my old apartment. I got a pack of 10 blank inside very businessy and professional cards last year to give to those who helped with our newly formed student organization. JP should still have some left if you need to look at samples.

having said that, i still maintain that sending thank-you cards in this case is cheesy.
