Been a member of the SDN community for a long time and have been a reader for much longer. Just wanted to give a big thank you to the posters who provide great information to us!

lol this is interesting.

I realize most people on here don't like me and mock me when I do post but I probably speak for many people when I give thanks to the web site. It really does have valuable information and has helped me a lot in my college and high school.

And how does this make you feel?...

Admittedly, it was a bit of an awkward post, Once. Nevertheless, welcome back. Perhaps your stay this time will be longer and more purposeful than your last. With some discretion, you could be a well-liked person here.

This thread = refer to my (new) avatar.

YES! I've been waiting all morning to say that!

Ah, SDN can officially make anything an argument 😀

Not what I expect of Once threads.

You guys are tough. I am graduating from med school in May, starting a surgical residency in June, and probably will be done posting, because I will be too busy being a resident, getting married, having kids, getting on with my life, although I hope to reach 3,000 posts before I evaporate into the internet cosmos. But my advice is, play a little nicer with each other, we are just people, trying to get by, trying to get through the day, and help out the folks who need us.

Once, I can only speak for myself, but I don't dislike you in the least! This is the internet, you're allowed to post slightly weird things! You should stick around this time, you have quite a lot of name recognition for your 110 posts!

Everyone else: listen to wise dude above me!

👍

I honestly don't understand some of you.

you're so not welcome.

Dude... you do realize she's been here nearly twice as long as you, right?

That said, I'm not quite sure why we're all being pricks to the OP. Honestly, yeah, she made some weird posts awhile back. Big deal. IIRC, some of them were actually kind of funny; others were self-deprecating; and others pretty much called up the fires of hell to consume her; but all in all, it was entertaining. I'd rather have Once back than MuffinTop and, really... we should be nice to whomever comes here. Ok, now I'm going to get off my soapbox and rejoin the life of pre-allo....

It's fine, the stuff I post or say in real life is always what I feel and sometimes just doesn't go over well with people. Nonetheless, I keep a positive attitude and that has worked well thus far 🙂.

Meh.. just put your game face on and interact more with the people in your threads. When you make a thread and don't reappear until 2 days later it makes a lot of posters feel like you're baiting them into a trolling.

Oh, I actually had no idea about this. Usually I get an idea for a thread that I am interested in and then get distracted with something and come back and read the responses.

Also, I don't own a computer...so sorry if I don't respond often haha.

It's interesting that someone who has a negative reputation here, sounds like they might very well be a really nice person in real life. While many of the "popular" people on here sounds like total jerks/tools/losers in real life...

people only see what they want to see.

once: thank you for loving me.

Most people on here mean well and I understand where they come from. The pressures of college life are immense and scary sometimes. People deal with it differently and I suppose I am an easy target on these forums.

That's because they are. They're not really popular so much as a self-sustaining population.

Jerk A posts. Jerk B posts to make Jerk A feel good about himself while feeling good about himself for being a jerk. Jerk C is new and wants to fit in with people who post frequently, so he posts to make Jerk A and Jerk B feel good. Eventually, Jerk C is accepted into this cadre as a regular. Jerk A posts to make Jerk C feel better about being a jerk by amazing jerk-derived jerk rationale. Jerks B and C see some sort of reason in that. And thus, the cycle continues.

I agree. And I believe that those who post in such a manner frequently enough eventually see their real life personalities being influenced by their online personalities.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with your analysis here.... I think there's a lot to be said for the classic advice, "Stay away from Pre-Allo." It really is a mean-spirited, jerkish behavior-inducing place. A change in culture would really be nice. Perhaps, that's a change some of us who've been here awhile can work to achieve?

Eh, I remember that when I first joined there was a lot of harsh talk and such (similar to today) but at the same time, I felt what separated that time from more recent posting is that it wasn't as irrelevant all the time. Memes galore, random insane trolls, people about whom I wonder if they are even associated with medicine in any way or just here to see themselves post... At the same time though, some of the cruelty and bitter sarcasm hasn't changed either except perhaps that there are more people that have caught on and started copying it.

Ugh, I'm not sure how a change would be made. It's a trend that is very common on internet forums and everywhere I see it happening are usually forums that are growing and growing in membership, bringing more people who don't really associate with the "core values" of the forum or really care. It feeds off each other, ultimately the "old timers" move on to something else and thus the remaining members define the new culture.

I don't know how a change could be made. Maybe limiting pictures? Or perhaps the number of threads a new member can start? Not that I really know anything about the good ole' days of SDN. And, for what it's worth, I still think the good on the site FAR outweighs the annoying.

That's correct Namerguy, I am from your generation of pre-med SDN users. We dicked around all the time but at least we had useful threads up from time to time. Sadly pre-allo has been made worthless by the current crop of know-nothing pre-med trolls [with a few good ones here and there]. It used to be much more useful but now its just a constant stream of berating new people, irrelevant posting, and stupid images which, as funny as they are, do not really advance the mission of what this forum is supposed to be used for. As such, you see less of the "older" folks in med school, residency and beyond coming back to contribute to meaningful discussions because there are rarely any.

For some reason, I feel like that was directed at me. I has a sad 🙁

Everyone! Stop. Everything.

What did you just say?

I think the word you're looking for is "circle-jerk"

For some reason this depressed the hell out of me.

I feel like I'm being called a jerk...

I don't think I'm that mean to people...I try to be helpful 99% of my time on here...

For some reason, I feel like that was directed at me. I has a sad 🙁

Definitely not. I had no one in mind when I posted that because it's just something that has increased a lot in general from many different users.

Haha yeah that's what I was getting at. I've noticed so much fewer med students and residents posting on here than before and I think the lack of any real opportunity for them to contribute is a large part of it. There's such an increased animosity towards new users and I attribute this a lot to the growth of the forum. Before users were known for knowing tons of useful/helpful information (L2D, etc), being the cynical voice of reason (Gutshot, pandabear, etc), or just being really nice and helpful (shemarty, etc). Sometimes you remembered for their strong insights about their particular medical school or app process (CCLCM, texuality with upenn, LET with vandy, etc)

More recently the most memorable people are simply the ones that post the craziest stuff, troll the hardest, or are the meanest. I feel like so many of us want our posts to identify us as the "funny guy" because that's become the guy that's memorable now. It's a forum and that's ultimately what happens to most successful, public forums. We have a shot at something better but a lot of that depends on what we're willing to tolerate as a community. I for one have decided that I will begin to stick up for other posters more when I see something I don't like, even if I don't like that poster.

So we're all agreed then. Oh, wait, there's a "Funny quotes from 'less informed' premeds" thread starting up now. Sure, let's just discourage all n00bs from posting questions for fear of making the list... I guess not everyone got the memo.
