Hello Everyone,

I decided to start a thread for all of us April 18 MCATers. Please feel free to share in your thought, success and frustrations throughout this process here!

All the best!
Good LUCK to all of us! 😉

I wanted to do one more practice test as well, but iv heard that you should not burn yourself out right before the exam.

What do you guys think about taking a practice test (TBR) but just for content review.

Or should I try to take it under timed conditions, or maybe just not take it at all.

Maybe take one tomorrow, review it Wednesday, and do nothing MCAT related Thursday and Friday.

2 more practice tests to go...i dont perform well if i let my guard down and relax before a test, gotta keep the intensity up all the way through the test

anyone else as excited as me to have your life back after this is over?? i can almost taste the beer...

how are you guys scoring on your practice exams? I have taken aamc 3 and 8 so far and have been doing poorly. I got a 28 (8, 10,10) and a 23 (7, 8, 8 so far. I don't know, if my scores don't go up I may have to void my test as this is my second time taking the mcats. I got a 27 the first time and definitly need to get a 30 at least.

I was feeling a bit shaky about it... but I've rocked the last two pratice tests that I've taken (8 and 9). I plan on taking 10 on Wednesday.

im having the same feeling. i do pretty decent on the aamc's but then i get this dark feeling that im seriously underprepared :scared:

on a side note...
how are your guy's AAMC verbal scores compared to EK 101 scores? im doing dececnt on aamc's but my EK is much lower 🙁

You may have to move your test date. 28 and 23 is not good. The common wisdom is that, if you want to score at least a 30, you should be getting 30-33 on your practice tests. Moreover, it seems the real test is getting harder. I took it last year and thought it was a breeze compare to the one I took on 3/28.
Don't go into the test with the mindset of voiding. It will cost you $225. Instead, pay $50 and take it next month or when you get your score comfortably in the the 30s.

Actually, I don't think you get any money if you cancel this late, so you might as well take it and void it. I would definitely void it though, sounds like you could use some more preparation.

I'm outta practice tests... Half nervous, half feeling like a champ...
Good luck everyone!

And what are you guys doing this week? I'm just doing review and I have a few verbal tests left in one of my books... And I guess I should rest.

Hm... I have always done well on AAMC 10-12's. I also get 10-11's on the ExamKrackers. Although I find AAMC much harder. I think the AAMC passages longer and more complex. Ugh.

i agree that you shouldn't take it if you are not ready. i know you want to get it over with, but if you're not ready, give yourself another month 🙂

You are right. I think he's past the one week deadline(or 2 weeks?) to reschedule. Perhaps he can go ahead and take it. But please, please void after taking. Use it practice your VR reading speed. That's what I did.

I agree. The AAMC passages seem more complex. The EK passages are quite enjoyable to read but the questions are tricky and filled with "gotcha". My score ranged from 10-11 with a one low of 8 and one high of 12. Didn't take AAMC VR passages since I've used them up in prepping for my last test.

My EK VR average is ~1 point lower than my AAMC practice test VR average. I think they're harder but not a whole lot.

Some people do significantly better than their practice average, some people get nervous and do worse. My theory is that you're either super focused on test day or you're nervous. Try to be the former.

um, is anyone practicing writing? i guess i should at least look at an example essay so i have an idea of what to expect for this section

Hey there, guys ready for Saturday?!?

I took my last practice test today and I'm just going to take it easy until test day (ok, maybe some flashcards).

What are you planning for after the test? I've been in the Kaplan class for a few months and started studying hardcore (as in dropped all my classwork) for the last 3ish weeks. When I'm done, I'm going to grab some food and a movie with my friends and then party time!

um, is anyone practicing writing? i guess i should at least look at an example essay so i have an idea of what to expect for this section

I've skipped the writing section on most of my practice exams, but I definitely think you should practice a bit before the exam. The tasks you're expected to satisfy aren't immediately apparent, so try to at least draw up a couple outlines and think about what types of events/literature/etc you might be able to draw on for the test.

On a 10 minute break between PS and VR, AAMC 10.

Nope. I'm basically gonna wing it.

I took my last practice test today and I'm just going to take it easy until test day (ok, maybe some flashcards).
How'd it go?

This may sound like completely ridiculous, but I'm happy that the test day is actually so close!!!! There's some abnormal excitement within me about this test now...It's weird...Maybe, I'm just losing my mind already...hahaha...GOOD LUCK TO EVERYBODY ON THE TEST THIS SATURDAY!!!! Sleep well, don't panic during exam, because EVERYBODY IS IN THE SAME BOAT WITH YOU, and DO NOT GIVE UP UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES DURING THE TEST NO MATTER HOW HARD AND IMPOSSIBLE SOME QUESTIONS MAY SEEM!!!!!!!!

I understand you COMPLETELY...Last test (AAMC10) I scored 27, some of the previous 28, 29, 25, 26, 27...Verbal is pulling me down all the time (English is my third language)...So...We'll see...Don't void your score....Just give your best shot on Saturday...Some people tend to do better on actual tests than on practice tests (it happened to me many times, and I hope this may happen on Saturday)...Whatever happens, be optimistic NO MATTER WHAT...MCAT is just one component of your medschool application...There's so MUCH MORE TO IT...A brief example: just a while ago my friend with MCAT 30 (8!!!! on verbal) got into Harvard, while my other friend with MCAT 35 is still waiting to hear from other schools...So, never lose hope no matter what. JUST DO YOUR BEST ON THE TEST DAY!!!!

My verbal is the weakest section, yet I do better on AAMC than on EK101...EK 101 is 130% subjective, many questions are very convoluted, vague, and the variety of texts is not as representative of the actual AAMC test...So I think AAMC is a better indicator of your verbal score

Good luck to you too! It doesn't sound weird at all, because we get our life back. I'm as ready as I'm going to be. I have taken as many CBTs as I could take and have done so many questions that they all seem the same now.

Over the last five days, I'm doing the review questions from the BR summary tests. I'm taking three summary tests per day through tomorrow and then reviewing the BR equation sheets and glossary on Friday. Saturday can't come soon enough!

I feel ya. I know I can kill this thing, I just want to go out and prove it.

IMO, EK is great practice and doing their tests will increase your score over time. However, you're right. They are harder than their AAMC VR counterparts.

How'd it go?

Haha, nice. I got a 37 on an AAMC one, so I'm stopping on a high point...just have to do it one more time.

I feel ya. I know I can kill this thing, I just want to go out and prove it.

Yup yup. I'm so ready for Saturday morning, it'll be like going into battle and we'll be warriors...FOR GLORY!!!

well, just took my last practice test...i guess that's it. took today and tomorrow off from work, gonna read over my notes a few more times, then game time.

everyone else feeling good??

I like the optimism, but I feel a bit like I'm going to throw up. Is anyone else in a daze in all of their classes right now?

I've planned for an awesome day tomorrow to clear my mind after all your recommendations. I hope it helps!

The end is near!

I decided to stop at AAMC 9 and not go onto 10, so I could end on a high. The last two tests for me have been 40+ and it's been such an incredible morale boost. I'm afraid it I take another one and it's not as good it'll put a damper on my mood.

I wish I could relax on Friday!! I have so many classes and labs to go to, I won't get a break.

What are you guys planning to do to help you get to sleep Friday night? I usually stay up until 3am, so I need to find a way to get to bed at a reasonable hour for the early test date.

anyone else do better on EK verbal than on AAMC?! Im starting to freak out. I've been getting consistent 10,11's on EK's. 10's and finally an 11 on AAMC 9 but I took 10 yesterday and got an 8 :scared:. I am convincing myself it is a fluke and that I just did not concentrate hard enough but come test day I will be fine. Has this happened to anyone else. Tell me I'm not the only one so I can stop freaking out. 2 more days. yeay and nay.

I had a similar experience w/ AAMC 10. I'd been getting 11-12's on VR but got a 9 on that one. Supposedly the curve is harsher b/c it's an easier test. Also, I think so much of verbal has to do with your focus that day.

Same thing happened to me for AAMC 10, made me feel like s**t,

I guess what happens now is Gods will, Good Luck to everyone.

Are any of you guys planning on eating anything (preordered subway?) during any of the ten minute breaks?

Anyone planning on writing down as many forumlas as possible during the tutorial before the exam?

Anyone doing anything else that thinks will be helpful that they could mention.

Took the real deal on 4/4/9. My advice to you:
Expect that the real deal will be hard because most likely it will be.It was for me and most others I have talked to. If you walk in knowing that it will be hard and may not at all resemble or reflect anything you have ever done or seen, and it probobly won't, then you won't be as much in a risk of being a deer in headlights. Also, don't get psyched out by an absolutely crazy passage. Focus on the questions!!!!! More often than not they will be staight forward or at least somewhat managable. Last advice: Do not and I mean do not spend more than a min 30 sec on any hard question the first time around. Pick an answer, mark it, and try to answer other easier questions in 30 seconds or so. This way every easy question buys you an additional 30 seconds so that once you went through all the questions, you can go back and look at the marked ones. If you save 30 seconds on 15 easier/more manageable questions, that will be 7.5 minutes that you just gave yourself to go back and have a second look! This may make a difference between a 9 a 12. If on the other hand, you spend 3 or 4 minutes on a hard question you just screwed your self on time, which will you put in tough situation even with the easier ones. You will also be psyched and begin to doubt yourself after months of hard work and good practice scores and this will cost you bigtime. The mental part is going to be the most costly part of such a mistake.I am serious, don't do it. If you miss all 7 "hard/crazy" questions out of 52 then you can still do pretty good ,so its ok. But you must nail the other 40-45 questions. The above strategy will increase your odds at nailing the easier ones. You don't want to miss those because you got psyched out on a couple of questions early on in the test. Remember, its probobly a hard test for most people so don't focus on the hardness. Instead stick to your "attack the questions" gameplan. What I just wrote here is probobly no news to most of you and I know that. But remember that if you forget these simple rules and fall into a panick mode, then mark my word- you will even think about voiding. Trust me. Write these rules down and on the last day, including right before you go in to the test center, look at the rules rather than a formula sheet. No formula or content info, even if you remember all of them, will help you in the real deal as much as following the simple rules! These simple rules have to be second nature before you step foot inside the testing center.Good luck to all you taking it.

Thanks for the reply, I actually read this a couple days ago and wrote down what you have in bold and I was going to come back to it again, so thanks for reminding me 👍

I think your right, its really easy to panic and once you do your in serious trouble. Im going to read this again before my test lol.

You will also be psyched and begin to doubt yourself after months of hard work and good practice scores and this will cost you bigtime.
A little over-dramatic are we?🙄

Good advice though, I think you're pretty much right. Confidence is key.

JimmerJammer, How dramatic I am (or not) will not make any difference when you panik and get ready to push the "I wish to void my exam" button. I've already taken the test. I'm cool. I just wanted to overemphasize a simple point that most people forget when in the real tests situation. As I said, I am not sharing any "new secret" here. I know that. However, its the basics or lack there of that can get you in trouble more often than not even if you're smart and have prepared for 1000+ hours and scored 40's on practice exams. Ironically, most People that didn't do so hot, prepared and did quite ok on practice tests. I can only suspect that they were in shock and performed poorly as a result. Don't let that be you. This can't be overemphasized. Go ahead and read all the previous exam treads. What's the number one complaint? OMG..... It was nothing like any practice test..or.. I ran out of time... or I hope the curve bails me out. If you walk in expecting the worst, then you'll have a better chance at keeping your head together when you read a crazy passage and ask yourself WTF did I just read? What is this? Mark my words now- you will say WTF during the exam at least once! It's not about confidence. It' s about respect before you start the test and expecting the worst and not being overconfident and keeping a cool head when you feel that you are getting kicked in the balls by an insane passage. MCAT will make you second guess yourself- trust me. I don't care how smart you are. Its designed that way. I was just trying to help whoever is listening. Call me dramatic, but if you walk away from this post with some additional information that was overemphasized here and you end up doing good, then it will b eworth it because America just got itself another future doctor. Knowledge is power! Good luck anyways man. I wish you the best.

I can't believe the test is tomorrow. I have butterfiles in my stomach thinking of it even though I'm not an mcat virgin. I've been very well "touched", heck even molested.........lol:laugh:

hey everybody! are you ready?

as for the essay postings... i was a bit worried about having not practiced any writing samples, so last week in my mcat 9 exam, i did one of them, and actually i was shocked at how easy it was. i finished it with ten minutes to spare, and actually felt rejuvinated after. so i'm not worried about that at all any more. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR THE WRITING SECTION, i have heard from multiple sources, is that you be CONSISTENT throughout with whatever you are saying. Don't go off on tangents, and don't change you mind half way through or talk about a lot of different perspectives. Give your perspective, give an example, conclude, make sure you answer all the questions they ask, and most importantly, be consistent, and you will be fine.

what do you guys think about reviewing today? my examcrackers study guide says to DO NOTHING, but i think i am going to review my orgo reactions, biological hormones, and physics formulas... what do you think?

Dear fellow 4/18/09 mcat examinees:
Tomorrow is the culmination of months of work. If you're like me, this is likely the most effort you've put into anything up to this point in your young lives. May you all make the mcat writers think they need to come up with some harder questions upon seeing your scores. I, for one, am going to be taking an SDN break for the day. GOOD LUCK!

EK can suck it. im gonna review until i cant anymore, anything to keep me 100% in mcat mode through tomorrow.

Amen.

Amen.

"I, for one, am going to be taking an SDN break for the day. GOOD LUCK!"

A F***ING MEN! Good luck everyone!

Yeah, I wanted to take a break and do nothing today... however I am going to look over hormones and equations once more. I have a three hour period where I am stuck at the hospital without too much to do... so I might as well review then.
