Private Alternative Loans
New York University is pleased to announce a loan program though SALLIE MAE available exclusively to NYU students. Applicants must be referred by the Office of Financial Aid and must have no negative credit history.
Borrowing Limit: Credit-ready applicants may borrow from $2,000 up to the total cost of attendance (less any other financial aid received). A student?s total educational loan debt may not exceed $200,000.
Interest: The interest rate is based on the prime lending rate less 1?2%, adjusted on a monthly basis while in school (prime lending rate during repayment). Principal and interest payments are deferred while enrolled and six months thereafter. During this deferment period, interest is capitalized (added to the principal). In addition, you may qualify for a deferment (up to two years) if you do a residency after graduation.
Fees: There is a guarantee fee of 5% of the principal amount for loans without a cosigner, 5% with a cosigner. There is no origination fee. Repayment: Repayment begins six months after graduation or cessation of enrollment, and may take from four to twenty years, depending on total amount borrowed.
Eligibility & Application Process: New York University will determine your
potential eligibility for a SALLIE MAE private loan upon determining your award package. If a suggested SALLIE MAE loan appears on your award letter, you will shortly thereafter receive an application in the mail. If you wish to be considered for this loan program, simply complete the application and return it with any necessary documentation to SALLIE MAE. You will be notified directly by SALLIE MAE if your loan is approved. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to apply for the loan without a cosigner; foreign students must have a credit-worthy U.S. citizen or permanent resident as a cosigner to apply.
Other Private Loans: There are several other private educational programs available at varying terms, conditions, interest rates, and fees. You may learn more about these alternatives at the Office of Financial Aid website at
