Welcome, all April 18, 2008, MCATers!!!!

This is your official place to stress, vent, hang out, party, cry, yell, or whatever else you need to do in the week before and just after your MCAT.

As a reminder, when your test is done, you are welcome to come here and discuss your experience with it. Discussing general passage topics is OK- ie, "I had PS passages on circuits, thermodynamics, and optics." However, you are NOT allowed post specific questions, passage information, or answer choices from your test. Any posts which contain specific content from the test will be deleted, and a 1-week post hold will be placed on your account. Look here for more information on this.

:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: to each and every one of you!!!!!!!

It was a passage that explained the extinction of dinosaurs. I'm not sure how much more I can divulge. It was not a very difficult passage, which might be why many seem to have forgotten it.

edit: typo

I don't remember this AT ALL and I had all the rest of those passages. I don't think there is any way I could have skipped a passage though so I'm not going to worry about it too much

edit: So here were the 7 verbal passages.

1. Weeds
2. Galileo and Tides
3. Descartes and Radical Skepticism
4. Skeptical Environmentalist & Acid Rain
5. Dinosaurs
6. Wild Capitalism and Ecocolonialism
7. Liberalism

Very interesting. I too had all of those passages except for dinosaurs. Instead of that I had a very difficult passage on Freud and Psychoanalysis.

Oh yikes.

Kind of glad I got the dinosaur passage then.

THANK YOU!!!!!! Thats what I had and it SUCKED...Verbal really was so much harder than I am used to. I've never fallen below a 10 before, even when I felt awful, but I'm positive I did this time. I'll feel lucky if I got a 9...well lucky and pissed, because I have never not gotten double digits in verbal grrrr

I don't remember a dinosaur passage or a Freud passage. I think I might remember (but I might be mixing this up with a practice test) that there was a passage on an author who was pretty big in western novels but he was misunderstood because he refused to authorize a biography so people have mixed opinions on him...anyone remember that or am I totally crazy?

YES! I had that one too. I was starting to worry myself because none of the other ones mentioned sounded familiar, but I still couldn't think of what I was missing.

Sounds like we are all constantly being haunted by new little tid bits of the test that creep their way into the brain randomly!

So...

Are any of you guys in the Midwest and wake up from that massive earthquake? I woke up, but I had no idea it was an earthquake. I figured it was just the jitters before the exam.

I'm praying for the world that I don't have to retest. last year on test day, vtech. this year, the midwest earthquakes.

I gotta quit mcat-ing.

You do know that God is sitting up there in the clouds screaming, "For the love of ME, pay attention! Get the frickin' hint. Me damnit....seriously, what more of a sign can I offer?"

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was the 7th passage for me too. I was reading all these posts and knew I didn't have the Dinosaur passage other people were talking about and I too started mini-freaking out that I left out a passage or something although I was 99.9% that I didn't. Yeah, I think the author was HDT or somethng (sorry, not sure if I can say the name or not)

Nukanuba, THANK YOU for ending my freak-out! lol

haha yeah, I wasn't sure what it was that woke me up untill I saw the reports later in the day. I had a tough time getting back to sleep.

I'm trying to take a hiatus from SDN for a few weeks here so that I don't go crazy. I was hitting 34-37 on almost all of my AAMCs, but right now I honestly just want that 30... Hope that everyone got what they wanted out of this test. Goodluck!

you will get alot higher than a 30 on it man, if you were hitting 34-37's on aamc exams(given you took them as virgins). have faith!

I think there was a poll on SDN where about 50% scored the same, 25% scored worse, and 25% scored better. It's something doable, but as was said not something to hope for. I think you're much more likely to go from mid 30's to high 30's than you are to go from mid 20's to high 20's.

Well obviously because going from mid 30's to high 30's shows that you have mastered the topics at hand. Mid 20's to high 20's means you haven't studied or are still unfamiliar with the topics and or how to take the exam.

hmmm now im even more confused cause this passage seems to ring a bell too. Did the Freud passage also have to do with Kant?

that was on a practice exam, i believe an AAMC... it was a passage explaining an author from back in the day (haha) that revolutionized the career of the writer but never got any credit because he was very reclusive

but yeah, its freaking me out how all the passages and exams are beginning to blend together

EDIT: after quickly skimming the AAMC practice exams, i couldnt find this passage so its possible that it was on the MCAT after all haha.... my memory is beginning to betray me

I had the verbal passage on the author, too - was it James Fenimore Cooper?

I think you're right. It's interesting that it seems like the majority of the exam was the same for everyone except for one passage here and there. I know that everyone doesn't get the exact same exam. Evidently it's also a good way to mess with our MCAT neuroses.

was anyone suspicious of the weed passage, even though it had nothing to do with that kind of weed? I felt like it was sending some sort of subliminal message ...... you know, because we took our test on 4/20 weekend. Those AAMC people think they're soooo clever. or maybe it was just a coincidence and I'm making something out of nothing.

I don't know 😛 I think you're thinking too much into it.

Oh btw, I realized I got a question wrong on the weed passage after reading through the whole thing again =(

I'm making myself so miserable.

stop it!!!!! why are you doing that to yourself? I'm amazed at the level of detail you guys are coming up with...I can only remember a few key questions that stick out in my mind, other than that it is all a mush---and I prefer it that way!!!

I remember this passage. bizarre

Just a note:

It is not okay to share any MCAT Q & A. As far as I am concerned, this includes linking actual passages that show up in an actual administration of the MCAT. If you violate this policy, you will receive an infraction and a 1-wk PH.

yeah guys, I thinkwe've hashed the passages more than enough. try to forget and look forward to/dread score release!

I agree! The test is over! Forget about it and have some fun! 😀 Nothing you can do, or no information that you get from now until score release will change anything so just keep looking forward and preparing for your applications.

Be happy that you're done! yay! 👍

too many days til score release. who else is awaiting anxiously to finalize their list of schools?

On Friday, I was thinking that I had no problem with the wait - what's done is done. But after four consecutive nights of MCAT dreams, I'm starting to see that this could be a challenge.

i don't think about the MCAT at all now that it's done. However, it seems to creep into my dreams every night. It's quite horrible really

It is more annoying than anything. Why is this the only computerized test in the world that cannot give you your scores at the end?

I don't think about it till I realize that some of my genetics review was saved because of mcat prep. (Final in 5 hours)

My list of schools is pretty finalized no matter what. This will show the spoiled side, but my dad is supplying the cash for application, so I am applying very very very broadly.

I get occasional anxiety waiting for it, but for the most part I really don't think about it. And besides on here I really don't talk about it. I'm usually the type of person to talk things to death, but whenever anybody asks me how the MCAT was I pretty much just reply with a shrug of the shoulders...I can't bring myself to discuss it!

I have a few schools that I can't bring myself to apply to unless my mcat scores are really good, but I would love to apply to them. ah, we shall see...
What's an extra $100 or $200 in this process anyway? 🙂

(Apply the above 8 or 10 times and you end up with Vihsadas's schools list...)
((And Vihsadas's debt. :scared:))

This sucks. It's like a crazy high waiting to get your scores. You think optimistically and you feel this natural high then you are let down when the thought of failure dawns itself into your thoughts...... I really don't know how I feel about the exam. I really felt ok with the first two sections, but the BS section became like a parasite that sucks the life from its host. It ruined any hope of me doing well. I didn't completely guess on the WTF passages.... but I def had to use POE and try to reason b/w the two that I thought could possibly be the answer. Anyone else feeling this??

I'd say it's safe to say everyone does and it's natural, I know this is how I feel. Some days i'm like I think I did really well while others I'm like you know it's possible I just screwed it up. It's out of your hands though, and when the feelings of failure are allowed to fester you begin to have a much less accurate idea of how you performed on the real thing.

Yeah IkerUnzalu I feel the same way. But from what I hear in this forum and others around the web, the consensus is that everyone thought the Bio section was trying. Personally I am in the same boat as you. I felt as if i had momentum coming out of the first two sections, but the Bio made me think. I find myself now remembering questions from the exam that I narrowed down to two answers. As an example of complete irony--or bad luck at least-- the once elusive correct answer comes through now as clear as day when it does not matter. I think through this method I have assured myself I got at least three incorrect that I know of . However, as a retaker, I feel a lot better about this test than I did on the prior examination-- including the Bio portion that I ultimately scored well on the first time despite similar worries. Believe in yourself and in a higher purpose. As my mom always tells me around any test time....."Everything happens for a reason, and there is nothing that you can do now worrying about the results". Thank goodness we have each other and message boards such as these to help us vent!

I know. It's like we have our very own Neurotic Premeds Anonymous.

Yay SDN :biglove:!!

I want to know my score so I can decide whether to get a job this summer or not...bah

Just curious, how broadly? Is it crazy to apply to 25 schools like I plan to?

Guys, I'm scared. First of all, this is my third and final time I wrote it. Second, I already applied to a bunch of schools overseas and I have a feeling that they're waiting for this score.

Sooooo much on the line...and I keep remembering mistakes I made. 🙁

That is considered VERY broad, which is about how many I plan to. If I get interviews flowing in then I'll turn some down, but I highly doubt that'll happen. 8-10 schools seems to be the standard. If one is a strong applicant I've heard of only 3 or 4, but that seems way too low to me.

I'm applying osteopathic and allopathic. All schools in my state and a TON of others. (There are I think 8 schools in my state alone)
