I am... doing prelim surg before my rads residency, though.

That's pretty sweet, man. Do most/all rads residents start that way or can they do other things for prelim?

prelim gives you something to do while you wait to start PGY-2. Some programs require it i believe.
You can do something else besides surgery during prelim, on the other hand transitional year is like "rotating internships"

most rads residents do either transitional year (kind of like another 3rd year of med school, but somewhat more medicine-focused, basically a rotating internship) or a medicine internship. TY because it's easy, and medicine because a lot of people going into rads are interested in diagnostic medicine. I want to do interventional rads, and I also think surgery is much more useful for a radiology residency, because it helps you protocol imaging better if you know WHY people are ordering it. Also, many if not most acute scans are ordered to give guidance or planning for surgery, so, I think it's a natural fit. Also, you read and interpret a lot of imaging in surgery. Finally, I hate IM and like surgery haha. I was very close to going into it, I just think rads ultimately is a better fit for me because of my interest in research/technology/medical device development in the future.

every program requires it, however, some internalize the intern year as a "categorical" medicine year.

Hmm I see, what other specialties also start at PGY-2?
I know anesthesia, rads, PM&R, neurology, any else?

I had always thought of rads PGY1 as the IM/TY type of stuff so it's awesome that surgery is an option. It sounds like a bad@ss career track.
Must have been a tough call between rads and surgery but you have great reasons for choosing the way you did. It would be awesome to work on some of the devices they use in the cath lab, and with the push toward minimally-invasive there's a ton of opportunity for development and innovation.

Neuro is a combined residency, so is PM&R.
The advanced residencies are optho, rad onc, derm, rads, and anesthesia, urology, and sometimes plastics, ortho, and ENT also do a surgical preliminary year.

What do you mean combined residency?
Looking at Neuro, it seems there is a 50/50 split for advanced and categorical programs. I know Hopkins and MGH are both advanced only and UCSF I think may be the only concensus top teir that is categorical.
Finished a nice little marathon of MCAT Physics and Bio, I'll be taking my 4th full length this Sat and want to make sure I keep on my steady score increases. MCATs in 2 months and I'm starting to panic a bit
new to the late night thread... just pulled an all-nighter for my honors thesis... so sleepy

Well, about 400-500 pages of literature reading into literature review, and I'm probably about 1/3 done. My eyes hurt so much. Good night 😎 (<= blind shades)
PM&R has both types of programs

Interesting, I guess both have enough categorical programs that you could apply to exclusively categorical programs. In general, applying to advanced programs is a huge hassle.
After work today I did some volunteer work for an hour (animal shelter) then came home and was lazy. Normally, I exercise every day but the gray, rainy weather and a long week got the best of me.
hey everyone... our night out ended early, surgery was awesome but kinda sucks the life out of you... going clubbing in chicago tomm though 😀

No joke. Rainy and cold. Feh. But, supposedly sunny and in the 50s tomorrow. We shall see.

it was the kind of day that you just wanted to be nice and warm inside... an OR would be ideal 😛
LOL I love this. I spend way too much time on the Internet into the wee hours of the morning.

What's peeps?
Oh not much. Just watching some Smallville. You?
Today was pretty productive. Outlined 3 genetic chapters + finished genetic hw. Time to do an ochem lab report ^_^.! I might get 5-6 hours of sleep tonight, yay!

Reading about the addition of H20 to chiral alkenes and to achiral alkenes.
out of all the wondrous memes that grace the internet, this one is the only one that I can't seem to find funny. What's wrong with me?
I had some coffee this evening to power me through putting together some slides for a presentation tomorrow. Unfortunately, it is also powering me through insomnia.
My sympathies to you all still dealing with orgo. I feel like there are more worthwhile things to stay up for than studying chemistry.

Half way done with organic chemistry lab report. I love ochem lab, because its mostly qualitative.

that particular picture or that meme altogether? because the "cats, y u no love hugs" with bloody scratches all over the guys face cracks me up... you're not embracing your inner 4 year old, soldier-san...
Won't bore anyone with the details but... crappy day. 🙁
Anyway, trying to keep my eye on the prize... quit my job in 11 weeks, med school to start in 13 weeks! woot!

I know, I know, dbeast! You know, not long ago I heard about a student fainting on the first day of med school at the med school where I have a part time job. When I first heard that I thought, what the hell? Why would you faint? But as the day approaches I am thinking maybe should have some smelling salts in my purse for the first day!

Anatomy lab tour? That's the only reason I can think for someone fainting.I know, I know, dbeast! that meme altogether, it just doesn't have the same flair like forever alone, bachelor frog, awkward penguin, troll physics, or any other troll related meme. Those are memes I can get behind. Maybe I just haven't found the right "y u no.." meme yet. Doubt any could top forever alone though, pure gold that one.

Omg yes
Anatomy lab tour? That's the only reason I can think for someone fainting.
Actually, no. It was a small group medical interviewing class. The way I heard the story, before class started, even before the faculty arrived, this young woman just slid out her chair and hit the floor in a faint.
Yeah, the first time I heard the story I was feeling a little judgmental. Now, I think that on the first day of class, as the full realization hits me that I am almost 40 years old, I just quit my job and took out $60K in loans for the first year, I realize I may faint, too. 😛
Doubt any could top forever alone though, pure gold that one.
Haha, yes! 👍
