The Most Important Thing You Have Learned on This Forum

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
People easily have their feelings hurt/hackles raised by anonymous internet posters.

(hilariously so)

that there are a lot of people out there who REALLY don't want me as their peer, and a lot of people who i really would never want as my peers. That a lot of schools do a good job of weeding these people out.

Not to start:

1) MD vs. DO threads
2) Ivy vs. non-Ivy threads
3) What are my chances threads
etc.

Contrary to what intuition may dictate, transferring schools is fine

What is the single most important thing you have gleaned from this forum?

That you can ONLY get into medical school if you have a 35+ MCAT / 3.9 GPA ,3000 hrs of clinical XP, Medical mission trips to Africa/S.America/India, 4 years research and 2 first author publications.

That said, I got in with none of the above.

That people still think older students/nontraditional students aren't going to get in as easily. Which is crazy!

That people are still arguing over whether or not community college credit is looked down on. I think there are about 100 threads on this every year, and no one seems to do a search for past answers...

That someone with lower stats and a lower MCAT score than you will always get in. It is best to get over it now, and perhaps work on making yourself the best candidate without worrying about other people.

That guy with a philosophy major will still become a surgeon just like that guy who is a neuroscience/physics/micro triple major. So to still keep your mouth shut - valuable lesson that people still haven't learned.

That other people (lots of other people) seem to study on Friday nights too. I feel less alone now.

1) Neuroses are contagious.
2) Life is unfair.
3) The most popular threads are generally the most useless ones.
4) The search function is a good friend- many questions have already been asked.

1) Ppl with 36 Mcats and 3.8 gpas still like to ask "what are my chances?"
2) Affirmative Action threads serve no purpose
3) I suck

Most people are very stupid.

Even the ones who are doctors.

You say this now, but when you are asked about Optimus Prime's chances of winning it all at an interview, you will bite your tongue...

WOA: Don't drop the soap.

That there are alot of bored premeds out there. Myself included.

to stay the hell away from this place for as long as you possibly can if you even slightly value your sanity

Have to add this one - the MCAT thread only makes me drink more and more often...as I realize my inferiority to those with the 40's that post there.

I talked about classic science fiction novels with one interviewer... If I had read Heinlein or Bradbury a little more recently, I bet that I would have been accepted to that school.

1. There are a lot of jerks that are premed out there and anonymity does not help their disposition.

2. Hope must be quashed, and right soon.

3. Apply early. (I didn't realize exactly how important this was until I started reading SDN, I kinda knew that you wanted to apply early but it wasn't really ingrained in my outlook of the process yet)

Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate

1. i've learned that i am the smartest poster on this forum...

2. and that a gunner is not a man with a rifle shooting bunnies in the boonies. for a more thorough definition look at # 1

1. I'm no where near as smart as I thought I was.

2. By merely typing the words "Affirmative Action," at least three SDN members' heads will explode.

3. People with nearly perfect MCAT scores are more worried about getting in than I am.

4. Everyone has a strong dislike of at least one school.

5. Medical students hate PBL

6. Pandabear is the best source for cynical medical advice.

7. Threads that start a huge fight..
A. Why would anyone.....?
B. I have a 2.6 and a 20 on my MCAT.. why am I not getting in?
C. I have a 4.0 and a 42 on my MCAT.. why haven't I gotten in everywhere?
D. Affirmative action...

8. I can't wait to go to medical school

That sarcasm is often difficult to convey to the brand of people posting on SDN.

Not to take people too seriously

a thread is not a thread with out at least 50% off topic replies

To not try and fill out a Pre-Med checklist of what I think adcoms want to see. College is much more enjoyable when I take part in things I enjoy like our Atheist/Agnostic Discussion Forum, Philosophy Club, writing music etc. Not spending my time changing bedsheets and licking envelopes at the hospital is a plus.

People who like philosophy are often actually goblins.

That taking a year off isn't really such a bad idea since it gives you a lot more perspective than some of the junior year pre-meds seem to have.

ding ding ding.

and generally they went to a state school, too.

also, i never realized that people took ivies so seriously.

1. that while people do take advantage of the anonymity SDN offers, people will also offer you advice and let you know whats going on when youre afraid to ask like SBBunny & the HMS acceptances thread.

2. that there are many people who read but do not post and the people that post are not representative of the entire applicant pool.

QFT, except that amwatts doesn't suck. 😍

Also that troll threads can be epic win when you add boobies to them. (What's up, Drogba?)

1. Not everyone knows about SDN.
2. Not everyone thinks like people on SDN.

That you should never start a thread that asks something like "So why do you want to go into medicine," or "What were your reasons for becoming a doctor?". You will not get a serious answer.

The same crowd that was obsessed with getting into a prestigious undergrad is obsessed with getting into a prestigious medical school...their bible is the USNWR rankings...

1: Dropkickmurphy is nothing more then an RT that wishes he could be a doctor

2: Most book smart people are more worried about getting in then your average book smart person.

3: People from an Ivy school are no smarter then your local graduate from a state school.

4: Information or adivce about medicine from a person that has never worked in a hospital, never went to medical schoo, and has never been a doctor doesn't know what they are talking about....even if they think they do.

5: People will still go to medical school even if they were able to earn $70k a year even with $200k of education debt.

6: More people study on a Friday night and weekend then I thought.

7: Most college classes are a complete joke and you learn what you need to know to be great at your job WHEN YOU GET THE JOB.

A lot of people have absolutely no idea what they are talking about and go through life in a haze of ignorance.

A lot of people have absolutely no idea what they are talking about and go through life in a haze of ignorance.

that's a blissful haze of ignorance

Its good to be humble.
Its good to rise above those that are so arrogant (and talking about themselves) they don't see the oncoming 18-wheeler.

There are no 18-wheelers on the internet.
There are police on the internet.
The pretend to be girls.
Take a seat.

I've learned that people on here are often quick to judge and condemn, as well as to be racist and ignorant (mainly MDApps). Go anonymity! I'd hate to be their patient.

There is always someone smarter than you. There is also always someone more stupider than you.😉

That most pre-meds are not like me.
