my amcas has not been verified yet.
thanks.
Your stats and ECs look great, but I might consider adding a low tier school or two. Almost all of your schools are top tier and those are very hard to get into (and I think MSTP is even harder). What about your state school?

What are my chances?

Thanks

Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

You got a good list of schools there and you have a great chance at getting in in at least one of them. Might want to add a few more reach schools though (who knows?). Write your secs well and prepare for your interviews.

I am thinking about adding more schools. Any suggestions?

Your chances should be much better this year with your improved MCAT. You should also talk to the dean of admissions at the school you were waitlisted at to ask how you can improve your application this year (that way you'll know what specifically you were lacking in and can fix it). Your schools look okay, but check the MSAR for OOS statistics. I don't have one with me now, but some schools jump out at me as ones that might not accept many OOS so you should reconsider applying there (in particular, WVU, Iowa, Alabama, Howard). Also you might want to apply to a few more schools. I don't know what state you're from, but you can apply to all the schools in your state, maybe George Washington. Good luck!

I would say that you definitely have a good shot this time. Improved MCATs are a plus and your schools are right around where they should be. But just remember to follow up, even during the secondary and interview process to show that you still have interest and are still considering your options with that school.

I am from MN. I talked to both of my in-state schools. For the duluth campus- they flat out said no because they want someone from a small town. and for the twin cities- my verbal and writing is too low. Thanks for the advice- I am going to wait till after Monday to call the Dean for the waitlisted school (WVU) and find out what I need to fix.

I wish I would have done more follow up the first time around. I didn't start doing that until after the interview.

hi everyone! ive been taking a kaplan class this summer, though i plan to take the mcats in april 2007 and take the kaplan class again. i got a 34 on a full length test, but i think i could probably do better because i could have studied much harder.
so, my question is, if i can get a 34 on the mcat, along with my current stats, where do you think i am competitive?

white, female, junior in fall, ct resident
4.0 gpa at uconn undergrad
bio major, (chem or english minor)
2 semesters chem research done
will later have 4 semesters bio research with honors thesis
60 hours shadowing obgyn
about 70 hrs volunteer emt on ambulance (more to come)
about 30 hrs volunteering tutoring foreign students (more to come)
about 60 hrs volunteer in rehab center
hospital volunteer come fall semester
+about 3 minor ec's along the way

Problem:
i can probably get decent (not great) lor's from my research professors, but my classes are so huge that i will have a problem getting them from those professors. i do have a good one from the doctor i shadowed though.
how much will this hurt my chances?

What are my chances? where should i improve?

Hello, Iam a student at Stony Brook University going into my junior year, Iam a Biology and Psychology Double Major, My Science and math gpa is around a 3.5, my overall gpa is a 3.6. I believe i can do fairy well on the MCAT, Ive only been taking verbal practice tests but ive been scoring 12-14's, with an 11 being the lowest. If i get a 34-36 on my MCAT what will my chances be on getting into New York Med Schools, such as Albany, Buffalo, Stony Brook. Ive been doing pyschology research for over a year now and will continue. I have also been volunteering at Stony Brook Hospital and Long Island Veterans Home for the past year and will be continuing throughout junior year. What other volunteering/ research related things should i do? What do med schools really like? I also manage one of my fathers subway sandwich stores during the summers, so thats my working experience. I hope to improve my science gpa to a solid 3.7 and overall also to a 3.7, but for now if my gpa stays around the same what are my chances?

so you want to know what you're chances are with an over abundance of EC's, higher than average MCAT and GPA?? Quit your bragging and asking ******ed ass questions like that...if you think you won't get in somewhere with those stats then you don't deserve to go to medical school!

what do you mean? Ive been looking around at some profiles and Ive seen people with crazy amounts of research and volunteer, heads of clubs, top-notch research in chemistry, and gpa's over 3.6 and high MCAT scores getting rejected. The more research I do the more uncertain i become of myself, I guess im just nervous about dedicated my studies to medicine and then not being able to even get into medical school.

Ok, so I would like some input. Really quick

GPA: 3.4
Science GPA 3.4
Post Bacc. 4.0
Mcat 29
Research for a year--> three poster abstracts and will be a co-authorship publication by the end of the year

2 medical mission trips (guatemala and mexico)

Finish up my masters in clinical research and will head down to mexico for 7 months to Cuernavaca to learn Spanish.

300 plus hours of shadowing

EMT- Basic, worked for a year and a half

Cycling Team Vice President

Retreat Team Leader

State of Residency--> Texas

Ok so I guess with my scores from above and based upon what I have done, what for sure schools should I apply too other then Texas Schools? If anyone can be of help, I would greatly appreciate it.

If anyone has input for me I'd def appreciate it... 🙂

I was wondering if I should apply now or wait till after my MCAT scores. I previously took the MCAT and recieved a 21. I have a 3.0 sci and cum g.p.a. What are my other options? TIA

if you are def going to apply regardless of what you got on the August MCAT then why not get a head start on finishing? if you might choose to not apply this round then I'd wait

Apply to a few more schools, both top and backups. Otherwise you seem pretty on top of things.

If you have been getting >27 on the practice tests before the MCAT, then don't wait. Otherwise wait, as if you get less than 27 on the August MCAT then I would suggest you apply next year and take the CBT again.

your only problem is the MCAT, but you're good for Texas schools. For out of state, Albany, SUNY in New York? There are many other schools like these.

Everyone who gets into medical school was not the ultimate pre-med gunner at their undergrad. Lots of people get in with some what "pedestrian" stats. If you realy get a 34-36 on the MCAT you should have no trouble getting into a medical school. Only thing I'd reccomend is a bit higher GPA.

You have quite a lot of reach schools on there...while your ECs are outstanding in my opinion, I think your MCAT and GPA are a bit low for the upper tier schools. Your masters GPA is great, but from what I read on here that's not as important as increasing your undergrad GPA with a post-bac program (I think post-bac is a waste because in the end you have nothing to show for it). I would check out the MSAR for other schools more in your range. Either way, best of luck!

Aright, this board is exactly what i need and would greatly greatly greatly appreciate it if i got some replies/advice from some of you.

My situation is a tough one. I didnt go to class freshman year and got around a 1.5 GPA (zoinks). After freshman year though i got my act together and got a 3.76 GPA year 2, 3.30 GPA year 3 (not as good, but not a 1.5), and a 3.72 GPA this past school year. I finish up this year and I expect to get around a 3.70 GPA or higher. That being said, I have the upward trend (3.60 since that freshman year), but when you include my bad freshman year my overall GPA will be around a 3.20 after this year. Will the ADCOMS completely dismiss me because of the horrible freshman year, or will they see that I can actualyl perform at a high level and say freshman year was a fluke. Obviously the MCAT is of great importance, and I am going to take a prep course and shoot for a 32+ on the dreaded test.

I might add that I plan on applying so I can start Fall of '09, so I have plenty of time to boost my EC's. I have started volunteering at an ER and plan to do that for the next couple years or so and I would also like to get some other EC's in. I've also been a Pharm. tech for the past two years. ANy suggestions on what I should do for EC's and what do you think my chances would be for a US Allopathic school (and I dont care if it's top tier....middle or lower tier is fine with me)

ps. I have Maine residency

thanks a lot 🙄

bosox do hospital volunteering, shadowing, and get as much clinical experience as possible but make sure u enjoy it too! your GPA of 3.2 is not great but it will be looked at and when adcoms see you have an upward trend it will be even better. don't worry too much bout it i think you'll be okay if you do well on the MCAT.

if grades go as planned you're golden... look to do some research if possible. UofVT is where you'll end up probably 👍

welcome to SDN. u'll meet about a million of these

hello nice people, I am currently devastated about my situation. I am a senior applying right now to medical school for a spot in august 2007. I do not have an April MCAT and just took the August MCAT. I do not have my score just yet but think may have score anywhere from a 26-31 on it, with verbal being around 4-5-6 on it. Unfortunately, I know its not just my thinking, but in fact it is true. My overall GPA is 3.79 and BCPM is ~3.82. Please helppp.. I have decent-good LORs, and a pretty good Personal statement. Should I go ahead and apply or what should I do? should I apply to 10 schools, 20 schools or 30? Please give me your 2 cents....

Are you a minority or a majority applicant? I ask because that could really denote how medical schools may look at your MCAT score. You GPA is fine, and above average. Anyway, despite you MCAT score or your ethnicity, I say you go for it.

Talk to your premed advisor ASAP, they know your situation and the realities of applying to med school more than most of us. Also, I think everyone feels blown away by the MCAT afterwards, so it might not be as bad as you think

But, even if you blew the MCAT, don't be too devestated. Worst case scenario is that you end up getting in the next app cycle in 2008 after retaking the MCAT. It's really just a year, and with an improved score you're likely to get in. I did the postbac route, so I'm done with classes and have a lag year as I apply to school....and it's actually pretty nice. We have a long, long road ahead of us, and it's kind of nice to have a bit of downtime and no real responsibility....just remember, it's only a year. :luck:

If you never apply, you'll never get in. I would apply because you have nothing but money to lose. I though my MCAT score sucked, but wait another 60 days before you toss the baby out with the bathwater. I think it's pretty much universal to second guess your score after the test, so just give it some time. I would apply broadly though, 20-25 well chosen schools, just to maximize your chances. Depending on what state you're from, the in-state schools might look more favorably on you just by virtue of your residency status. Don't get discouraged by numbers, the SDNer are a skewed population to measure yourself agains.

it's big risk applying this cycle if you're not sure how you'll do, especially with that low of a verbal score. not sure what to tell you because besides that your GPA is good, and everything else looks good. your options are:

1) apply ASAP, send everything in, hope for the best MCAT score and see where you get.
2) study your butt off and take it in january or whenever they offer it in spring 2007, and apply then with a stronger app (provided you do better on the MCAT)

oh yea, if you want someone to read your PS, i'll take a wack at it; i'd say i'm a pretty good writer.

If you never apply, you'll never get in. I would apply because you have nothing but money to lose.

Um no - bad advice. If you KNOW you tanked the MCAT, or at least the verbal section, you are much better off not applying until you can retake the MCAT. There are disadvantages at some schools in being a reapplicant. In this process you are expected to have all your ducks lined up in a row before pulling the trigger, not winging it and hoping for luck. A 6 or below in verbal for an applicant where english is your primary language is likely going to be prohibitive to entering med school. Fix it, apply once, and get in.

If you never apply, you'll never get in. I would apply because you have nothing but money to lose.

Well, keep in mind that you have thousands of dollars to lose, since you'd have to apply to a broad range of schools if you have a weak application.
