Queen James, unless you have a very low single score on MCAT then you're not an underdog. People, please read the first post before adding yourselves to the underdog list.

One of the things that I learned over the last couple of years is that just because you think you have acceptable stats, doesn't mean that you will get in- nothing is guaranteed and no one is owed a spot in medical school. There are way more qualified people than seats and it just might not work out. I will continue applying for at least a few more years if I don't get in this cycle. An acceptance would be nice, but if not it's okay- I'm nontrad so I have a whole another life outside of all this.
Anyways, there were several glaring weaknesses in my application the last 2 years:
late applications- first time I applied I was complete in January, this past year I wasn't complete until October.
limited school list- due to personal reasons, I would only consider going to a handful of DO schools (less than five)
no DO letter- this is a huge weakness and one that I am still working on fixing
I am a low cGPA, high sGPA splitter. I did terrible my 1st go around in college, nonscience major who barely graduated with a 2.5, I had 10+ withdrawals, failed multiple classes. After working for a few years, I went back to school at night and took all my prereqs and ended up getting a second bachelors, this time with a 3.7+ cgpa, 3.7+ sgpa over the last 100+ credits.
Problems I had that I think I have fixed:
limited clinical experience the first year, but I had 1000+ hours the second year I applied. I will have 2500+ hours this year
better LORs from professors
will finally be applying early this year, I've already prewritten my AACOMAS primary and my secondaries

Reasons why I still might not get in:
Still no DO letter
still only applying to less than five DO schools

I do have a feeling that this might finally be my year so we'll see what happens!

Thanks - and best of luck! If I make it... I will be a somewhat similar applicant to you relative to GPA so I appreciate your very detailed message.

@ClassicJandT Which 5 schools are you applying? Even though you have a strong MCAT score, your GPA may get you screen out. Keep in mind that your MCAT may expire soon. I would encourage you to apply more than just 5 schools. I don't think the wait is worth it. Look, if you got in the first cycle, you would be a second year this fall. Btw, if you can bring up your GPA, that is even better.

FWIW, I have seen numerous people get in with ~3.0 sgpa's and 24-26 MCAT to the newer schools.

Yes, but not everyone wants to go to the least desirable school that will accept them lol.

Based on comments on this thread, it depends on your school choice.

Do you just want to get in anywhere? or get into a half-decent program? If the first one, probably a 26+, if the second one 28+

Thanks for the advice, kenjixshadow. Unfortunately, I can't really change my gpa at this point- simply way too many credit hours. I have 120 credits of 2.5 in nonscience classes from over a decade ago from my 1st bachelors and 120 credits of sciences for 3.7+ cgpa and 3.7+ sgpa from my 2nd bachelors. My gpa is what it is and I'm hoping schools eventually realize the caliber of student I've become now that I am older. And yeah, I'm probably going to have to take the new MCAT if I don't get in this year.

As a older nontrad applicant, my first obligation is to my family so I am pretty much stuck geographically to those schools where I can be back home at least on the weekend.

To all my fellow underdogs- learn from my mistakes. You don't want to be a 3x reapplicant like me. This is the same advice given to every applicant but it applies even more so to us because of our deficiencies in one area or another: apply early, apply early, apply early.
The biggest reason why I am in this position is simply because my applications were completed late. Also if you do not have to be in a particular region, apply as broadly as you can. Good luck, everyone!

Has anyone heard that the AACOM is going to be using a new server for their applications this year and you will be able to submit as soon as you are finished after it opening May 5th? I was speaking with an AACOM rep this weekend at a conference and she was telling me this but just wanted to see if anyone else had also heard this.. Can't find any other info about it..

I used 1/3 - 1/2 of my essay to explain my poor undergrad grades (ie untreated ADHD) and then talked about what I had changed in order to go back and get >3.75 over 2+ years of postgrad courses. I finished off with a story on why I felt healthcare is my calling and mentioned my experience in healthcare. Looking back I think I should have completely avoided talking about why I didn't do well to begin with and just concentrated on why I want to be a physician and what I have done to go back and make myself a more competitive applicant. Also I feel that taking 2-3 weeks to get secondaries done was probably a really bad idea. I applied to both MD and DO (20 or so each) and it was simply too much work to keep up with secondaries.

I plan on getting applications out right away this time, I will be changing my essay and will be retaking courses this fall and next spring (if necessary). Planning long term; if I dont get in this year I plan on being a much better applicant next cycle (ie gpa above 3.4 for both cum and sci).

I remember @chizledfrmstone received an ii from AZCOM around this time last year. If you can send them a LOI ASAP, you might be able to still get an interview.

Maybe visit (once a year) but take everything with a grain of salt (and don't take it to heart). Why? If you plan on getting a committee letter, they often mention whether or not you met with your adviser.
 
Should I bother posting if I'm currently considered an underdog but hopefully won't be when applications go in (retaking two classes) [currently 3.1/3.1/32(12,11,9)]?

Hey all!

I just wanted to stop on in and give all of you some well wishes! I too, was in your situation two cycles ago. With a 3.49 s/c gpa and 24R (9/8/7), I ended up with five acceptances in hand. Just hang in there, put your best foot forward, and know that you will succeed! It may take some fine tuning, and a little extra hard work, but keep your chin up! There is always a way to cross the finish line, but often many hurdles and detours come along the way. Own your story, be proud, and show them the reason you will make a phenomenal medical student, and physician. I know this process is extremely time consuming, expensive, and nerve racking, but it is well worth it in the end. Best wishes out to all of you guys, and do not give up hope!

what was special about your application if you dont mind me asking? There had to be something! Or were you just a #*$^&ing baller during interviews?

As far as my background, I really invested into my extracurricular aspect of my application. This included building up my leadership through an officer position in our Pre-AMSA chapter throughout my undergraduate education, in addition to 200+ hours of neurocognitive research, volunteering in our local veteran's hospital post-operative care, as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters community mentoring program. I also had experience through employment and shadowing within a medical practice setting that stemmed back a few years. I understand these experiences are often a moving target, and very hard to hit while trying to maintain sanity while doing well in your curricula, but is something that is very doable. I would suggest not spreading yourself too thin, but show deep investment in each of your pursuits within the medical EC's. I started early, and really committed fully to one or two things at a time.

I know that coming through many of the interviews, it definitely was not the quantity of activities and involvement, but more the quality of each experience that was asked about the most. The adcom's know that many applicants are able to rack up those hours, and check those boxes, but a big difference I noted was when I was able to tell them the profound impact one or two of the selective experiences had on me. From my impression, they enjoyed hearing about how time spent in those settings really impacted you, and influenced your decision to pursue medicine, or how each experience added to your character that you will carry forth into medicine.
