Okay... that's it.... two and a half hours.... that's how long it took to cut the essays down to meet their absurdly short length requirements and still get them to make sense... making sure to press the save button each and every time... then I go to audit my application and it stops me because my essays are over the required length... why, you ask? BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T SAVED ANY OF MY CHANGES... SEVEN HOURS I'VE PUT INTO THIS SECONDARY AND THEY SCREW ME LIKE THIS! I'm done.... looking to do what you can to thin out the applicant pool, blue devils? Congrats. You've beaten me. I won't spend another second on your ridiculous app again. What the @%#$ makes you think your so amazing that you should treat your perspective students like this? I just hope a new El-Nino comes this fall that just hits Durham, pulls the entire city out of the ground and flings it upside down into the middle of the atlantic.... 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡

ummmmm, why didnt you do the essays in ms word? sorry to add insult to injury but you had to learn sometime right? duke's secondary is one of the more tedious anyway.

the last "cloning/technogly/etc" essay is whack for 1000 chars.

yeah... your completely right... its ridiculous not to save everything you do before you try and submit it... it was late and I was really tired... ah, well... I guess I didn't want to move to NC anyway... 😳

Yeah... please tell me how you can honestly debate that topic in one small paragraph? Its crazy... if they honestly wanted to see your insights they wouldn't have such ridiculously small character limits... they are just trying to be difficult for difficulty's sake, to thin down the herd...

Yah..the question itself is 728 characters...kinda ridiculous

Jason

i think thats recommended though. The actual deadline is december or January, I believe.

Anyone else having this problem?

I pasted in my essays and then I audited. It says everything is good to go. I click on the links on the right side and now my essays don't show up. Funny thing is if you click on the recommendations link at the top, it shows the recommenders you have added but if you click on the right side it shows no recommenders. Great software engineering....

Yeah, this secondary is messed up in nearly every possible way. The technology is horrible, and the literary constraints are absurd. Boooooooo to this secondary.

Plus, I realized that if you look under "my history", they know when you logged into the site! It wouldn't matter except that they have all this talk about how promptly starting and finishing your secondary will send a message o them that you're honestly interested in the school. Talk about Big Brother... 😱

Now that i'm finished the page is giving me problems *sniff*

So i guess we just have to have faith that once we put the essays there and confirm it, that they're still stored somewhere when we apply?

I remember someone posting that we can go over the limits a little bit... has anyone actually tried this and still submitted sucessfully? I mean, do they seriously care if I go 38 characters over? *grumble grumble*. I hate this stupid application :meanie:

Can anyone else actually log in????

I went over the limit a lil bit and it accepted it. Save your work and run an audit just in case.

ahhhh....its not letting me login. keeps coming up with an error message before i get to the login screen. i tried it using mozilla/firefox and explorer. anyone else having this trouble with Duke tonight?

Yeah, I can't even get the web page to appear (I'm using explorer). I guess it is down or too many people are trying to access it....

I was having this same problem too - I would type in info and save it, and then as soon as I returned to that same page, the page was blank.

As it turns out, you need to change something with your browser. I'm using Internet Explorer, so I went to "Tools", "Internet Options", and then chose "Settings" under the "Temporary Internet Files" heading. For the "Check for newer versions of stored pages" heading, choose "Every visit to the page". That should solve the problem. At least, it did for me. Now, my info appears when I return to pages.

I have a different question for people: I'm assuming that the character limits don't include spaces - as the instructions indicate. Does that work for people? Just making sure. This is such a messed up secondary.

You are correct. The character limit does not include spaces. I managed to get through the audit just fine.

One more bit of advice: When I cut and pasted my essays, all but the last paragraph would shrink to a smaller size than I originally typed. If you encounter this problem, you will need to convert your essays into a single paragraph, paste into the web forms, and then hit RETURN where your new paragraphs are supposed to begin.

Awesome! Thanks! That did the trick.

Is it bizarre that I can't think of anything to write for the ethical dilemma question? Its not that i havent been trying either.. am I that sheltered? Or just lucky? Aaaargh...

Hey there's no rule saying that because someone has it worse than you, you can't complain.
