The Official July 2, 2014 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey I was with you guys on this mcat. I agree that the PS was like nothing I've seen on the practice AAMC mcats it was tough. Verbal and Bio seemed reasonable and wasn't that bad at all for me, but we'll see lol. I submitted my primary and secondaries already for NJMS's early decision program, just waiting for this score to be released and hopefully get an interview!

Same page. Hoping for nice scale on physics. I actually think I did well on timing/ hard questions. But I made so many stupid mistakes throughout. Good thing I didn't realize until the exam was over... otherwise I would have been thrown off during verbal/bio

The thing about verbal is that there is like no room for error. To get 12 or higher, you can get max three wrong (maybe four). Even if it is easy section, that is not a walk in park to pull off. I am optimistic but if I see something below 12 then it wouldn't be too unbelievable. I will just think "this sucks-- made more mistakes than I realized. It could have easily happened without me realizing it."

Bio is one of those sections that if you think you did pretty well, you will prob do at least as good as your avg.

An 11 on VR is 95 percentile. For most top-tier medical schools, the median VR score of accepted applicants is an 11. I feel like an 11 is equivalent to a 13 on the sciences. That's why it's super duper rare to see a 15 in VR but occasionally someone gets a 15 on PS/BS. So yeah, the scale prevents most people from getting a 13+. Similar to how the scale for sciences does the same but to a lesser degree.

On another note, what do you guys think of my school list?? I aimed for low-middle tier schools near the east coast. Depending on my mcat score, I'll change it up.

The acceptances rates tho 🙁

Wow I didn't know the acceptance rates were that low. I am applying next cycle so I haven't really looked at those kinds of logistics yet

It could be a bit higher. I just did matriculated/Total # of applicants. I'm sure they give out a few more seats than the entering class.

My greatest worry is that I did poorly in VR again. I got 11/6/14 before. It's because of verbal I re-took and since I am applying this cycle, my score and application rests mostly on verbal. But, I don't want to jinx myself on the sciences either. There's still a possibility I could get a 9 on PS or BS, which would suck just as much.

I feel like 95% confident that I got a 10 or above in BS and VR.

PS though... 🙁

yeah I hear that. I think a couple days before I'm going to prepare my plan just incase I need to do a retake in like September. at least that way it'll ease the blow knowing you already have your plan in place. gonna be a longgg 8 days.

Did anyone else leave the testing center like this?

That is one weak door, lol.

I left the testing center completely brain-dead. Everyone else is walking outside calling their parents, crying, whatever, and I just get into my car and drive off with a blank stare.

I don't even know if I paid attention on the drive home. ._.

I blasted music in my car lol Felt good after verbal and bio. =]

... now let's see if I am disappointed next week

In the middle of BS, I literally started laughing like a madman in joy at the passages / discrete questions. That might've looked suspicious..

So, did you guys mark a lot of questions when you initially go through them? I mark anything I have any doubt on, which is why I mark a lot. For the AAMC practice tests, I would mark on average 18 for both PS/BS and 22 for VR. For the real test, I marked 21 for PS, 25 for BS, and 21 for VR, which were higher than AAMC, as expected. But, I finished with 18 mins left on both sciences and about 4 mins left on VR and managed to go over everything but still had many doubts. Part of me is worried I marked a lot more than usual, which increases my chances of getting more questions wrong. My AAMC average is 12/9/11.

I actually tend to only mark ones I feel like I could come back to and maybe figure out. problem is I never actually have time to come back so it's really a waste lol

I marked 5, 3, 3 (I think? I don't actually count).. I only had 5 mins left at end of all three sections so it is prob just a matter of our different strategies.

I guess the reason i mark anything and everything is to realize how many questions I should get right for sure (even though we can never be 100% sure on the mcat but I can say when I don't mark, 95% of the time I get the question right). And from there at worst, it could be 25% of marked questions right. haha.

not a bad way to gauge how you did. I'd probably end up marking 52, 40, 52 if I did this though 🙁 hahaha

... I am officially becoming one of the SDN users I use to make fun of by becoming crazy as the wait gets closer!! hehe

I just went back to pages 3-5 on this thread to see everyone's initial post-test reactions. Honestly, I don't have any idea what to expect with my physics score....

I too mark questions that I'm unsure about. The number of questions I marked was about the same as my practice exams. Sooo, I'm hoping that's a good thing. \_🙂_/

I usually don't have time to go back in verbal to look at marked questions but I marked anyway- glad I did because I had 3 minutes to check them (there were only three and all from same passage)

Hi everyone! I also wrote mine on July 2nd and I recently found this thread. I thought PS was harder than the practice tests, it was my strongest section and I think I will do the worst in PS. VR and BS were fine, BS was easier than any practice tests I had done. I will be writing it again on August 21 though so I am still studying for it. Hopefully I don't have to write it.

I think you might be surprised by your physics score. It still might end up being your best section even though it felt worse than VR and BS. I agree that Bio felt easy, but I think those unfamiliar with research/passage concepts, may have found it significantly harder.

If PS was my best section, I can definitely rest easy.. lol

I am also worried about how I did on my verbal section. I feel that my performance in that section will determine whether I have to retake it. I ran out of time and guessed on two questions and that has been haunting all these weeks 🙁

How did you feel about rest of passages

I had a real issue with timing which I didnt on the practice tests. I only got the timing on Verbal right. thought i was doing well on timing on Bio but for some reason had limited time left by the end. But it was not nearly as bad as PS. I blew my timing on the PS. Its sad because I did so well on my AAMC practice tests and had no indication that I needed to practice timing except for verbal.
