**The Official July 2016 MCAT Thread**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Scheduled for July 22nd and hoping for 510-512. Just took Kaplan FL 3 and got a 506(126/127/127/126) which is a little disappointing.
Previous exams:
5/15Kaplan FL1: 499 (123/125/126/125)
5/21 Princeton Demo Test: 498 (123/125/123/127)
6/8 Kaplan FL2: 504 (125/128/126/125)
6/24 AAMC Sample (unscored): 78%, 83%, 71%, 80%

When do you guys think I should take the scored AAMC? I don't want to take it too soon so that it can be an as accurate measure as possible, but I'm also worried if I wait too close to test day and do poorly, I'll go into panic mode.
Anyone have any experience with the Kaplan exams and how good of a predictor they are?

we have very similar scores, I think I'm going to try EK 4 on sunday or monday and see if I can go 65%+, if not then ill probably call aamc and cancel my exam (i cant risk low score since its my retake)

I don't know if I would do that. If you are really debating canceling then you need to take the AAMC FL. There's people that have very substantial score jumps from practice exams to the real thing. I know I'm a bit more reassured by my sample and section bank scores.

You're fine. Take the scored on the 15th.

I've already taken the aamc fl on 5/17 and got a 501 (126/123/127/125) so retaking that won't give me such an accurate assessment but if I can find time I'll squeeze it in but just interpret my score with caution since it might be inflated

Our section banks are pretty similar:

66% bio
72% psych

I say go for it. That's a good bio SB score. I'm not done with mine yet but I don't think mine will be that high. If you're SB was under timed conditions I would definitely say you're ready. I've been doing mine untimed.

I haven't taken any Kaplan exams, but from what I have seen, people tend to score much higher on the real thing than on the Kaplan exams.

I did a score conversion on your AAMC Unscored FL and it showed a score range of 508-512

Do the Question Packs and maybe even the section bank before taking the AAMC Scored FL. You should be fine! Just keep it up! 🙂

I did a few question packs but not timed and a while ago so not sure how valid they are.
Bio 1: 60%
Chem: 70%
Physics: 78%

Also, which score conversion did you use for the unscored? Thanks for the feedback 🙂

Taking it 1-2 weeks before your exam is probably the best. I know some people like taking it early to review, but I want to use it as a score predictor. Whatever you get on it closer to your test date is what you should expect..I don't think high cramming is going to boost that score too much. If you didn't score close to what you want on the scored AAMC that close to the test day, I think voiding is an option if you want to be realistic. I'm saying like if you're aiming 508+ and you got a 500 on it but if you get like 3-4 pts from your dream score, I think it's still doable.

Are you also applying this cycle?

No, I've decided to hold off til next year. Mainly because I need my senior year to raise my pretty horrible GPA. Taking the mcat early just in case I need to retake I have plenty of time.

Oh okay, just trying to see if anyone is like me taking the late July one and applying this cycle. Hope I don't get destroyed haha

On lunch break during NS 4. I started it pretty late around noon because I waiting for my intense headache (the heat has been getting to me) to subside. Anyway, I don't feel good about either the C/P nor the CARS sections 🙁 Debating whether or not to even finish the B/B and P/S sections after I eat, but this score was supposed to be my tell-all on whether or not I would be signing up for the 9th test or 22nd. Uffff.

^^^ That was supposed to post during my break lol.
Anyway, I finished NS 4 and ended up with a 508: 127-126-127-128
I cried after B/B and just wanted to give up during P/S.. I guess I'm glad I didn't. This full length didn't seem like it had as much critical thinking involved as the earlier NS exams did. Not sure if that's the case or if my 1.5 weeks off of practice tests to review content paid off. To register tomorrow to take it next week on the 9th or...

508 on NS is great! Based on the spreadsheet and how other people have scored, you should be able to at least hit that on the exam. Have you taken any of the aamc tests?

If it's been a while since you took the Q-Packs, I would re-take them timed (especially bio). They will be somewhat inflated but you want to make sure that if you got a similar question on the real thing that you would definitely get it correct.

The section banks are really tough, but I would do those too.

I used mcatjelly's score conversion.

I cannot sleep anymore... If I take 2 Benadryl, I feel like crap the entire next day. 1 doesn't do anything. I'm exercising every day now to make my body tired but my mind is just a mess. So ready to get this done with. Gonna take EK4 tomorrow, AAMC scored on the 5th. Finishing B/B SB today and going over my last 2 EK exams very diligently.

If my memory serves me correctly that's one of your better scores! I think it would be worth it to take it on the 9th. I'm taking it next week and my highest practice test is a 507! Haven't taken AAMC scored yet.

Try Melatonin. It may get you on the right track at least for the next few days.

Also I realized I forgot what caspase cascade involved until I saw your note. If that pops up on the exam, I will owe you big time 😛

Actually, screw it. I'm going to take the AAMC scored tomorrow. At least that way I'll know what to review over the next 5 days if I don't score as well.

I feel like it would be something that would show up, now that you mention it. That's an old "Location", from when i was in cell biology last year around this time.

I highly recommend that approach. Knowing how the test will be will give you time to prepare for any weak concepts and what to expect. Taking it Tuesday won't give you much time to review and may actually make you more stressed out that close to the exam. I don't plan on studying any material Thursday or Friday (I have it on the 9th)

A few weeks really won't make much of a difference in score. If you plan on applying this cycle, the 9th is probably the way to go

Hey guys!

Do the Official Guide as a half length this morning under testing conditions. Night and day difference with my timing, changed the reading strategy like some of you suggested. But I think for some of them I skimmed too fast. Need to find my balance! I know I did the NS FL just yesterday but I'm traveling this weekend and it will be easier to review both while traveling than trying to take a test this weekend.

Score 70%\80%\73%\90%

Did a score conversion and that is 128/127/128/130 513- but taking that with a truckload of salt, a lot more work to do!

Major qualm with this exam: I rarely feel like I get questions right, instead I'm proving that all 3 other options are wrong. Every question feels like four sets of true/false, so it's actually more like 920 questions... AAMC stop it.

Is this schedule overkill?

I want to take EK 4 on Sunday and then aamc scored on Tuesday (I took this back in May but want to refresh the format/wording of aamc)

I'm taking the test on Friday 7/8

Is there anything to gain from taking EK/NS/Altius exams in the upcoming weeks that we wouldn't from the section bank, official guide, unscored, and scored questions?

Exam is July 22nd so trying to optimize studying in the upcoming weeks. I've taken Kaplan diag, NS1, and have been practicing old AAMC questions consistently.

The AAMC on Tuesday is going to be under testing conditions or just reviewing?

testing conditions-i know my score might be inflated but AAMC words their questions/answers in a certain way that I would like to refresh on before test day
(previously taken on 5/17: 501-126/123/127/125)

I scored a 62% on EK 3 yesterday and I'm aiming for above a 65% on EK 4 on sunday

I guess that's fine as long as you keep things in perspective and make sure the rest of the week is low key. Make sure to highlight the errors you make the second time around even more!

I'm in the same spot...I think I'm just going to sign up for July 22. The two weeks probably won't change my score, but at least it will help me be more relaxed and confident going in. The thought of rushing to take it the 9th and cramming all my review in one week is tiring. And I could probably use a couple more practice tests 🙄 I think as long as we can be complete by late August, we should still be good to go. Adcoms I've talked to say two weeks doesn't make much difference to them, but the score will. You only have one shot at this point, so choose the date that you feel most comfortable with!

Is anyone willing to share their EK test account in exchange for my Altius test access? I have all 10 of them, and they're pretty good! The reason I ask is because my EK account expires July 4 and I haven't finished all the tests 🙁 really don't want to have to buy them again. However, my Altius is good until Dec. and it's unlimited attempts at the tests.

Anyone want extra practice and willing to do an exchange? PM me if needed!

I'm hoping it's not a fluke. I've taken the aamc uncscored about 2-3 weeks ago and got a 56%-81%-75%-85% but I didn't remember anything from the first time I took it back in September when I got a 53%-83%-71%-71%. It sucks that I scored so similar to last time because I ended up with a 498 on the real deal. But I am feeling a little more confident this time around so I hope it helps!! I'm planning on taking the aamc scored on Tuesday.

If my memory serves me correctly that's one of your better scores! I think it would be worth it to take it on the 9th. I'm taking it next week and my highest practice test is a 507! Haven't taken AAMC scored yet.
Yea it's my highest score I've gotten on any practice test. Last NS I got a 503. You'll do great on the scored, I'm sure🙂 Our scores are a weeee bit similiar.. although your FLs and SB %'s are higher than mine. Looking forward to seeing your hard work pay off!

What are your practice scores looking like? 2 weeks CAN change your score if you haven't hit your plateau which is why I'm struggling to decide. I was supposed to take it on the 18th, but I'm so glad I postponed. It sucks I only have until tonight to decide whether or not I'll be registering for the 9th or 22nd, but I think I'm leaning towards the 9th. I don't want to feel burned out if I wait and I think sooner I apply the better chance I have (low gpa). But as you said, a higher score would look better than a score 2 weeks early. Very hard decision.

My AAMC practice scores are actually not that bad. I got 510-513 on them. However, I know I haven't hit my plateau. I took those tests without reviewing any organic or metabolism and without doing any C/P or Bio. practice questions 🙁 Tbh I've only done P/S practice passages diligently. I also only took two practice tests (both AAMC ones). I took the question packs and scored 86% GChem, 88% Physics, ~83% for both Bio., and around a 76-80% for CARS. I only finished the P/S Section bank so far and scored ~80%...I'm halfway through the B/C one.

Technically, I could take the test next week based on the above scores. But I know I'll walk in feeling underprepared and the actual test is much harder than the practice ones (I voided my June 18 because of this...so thrown off by the unexpected level of difficulty!), so I want to at least go in knowing my full content and practicing as much as possible.

I know I screwed up big time taking the MCAT this late. But at the same time, I don't think I can forgive myself if I take the July 9 unprepared, score lower, and not be able to apply at all this cycle  so yes, it's a very hard decision.

Just took kaplan test #3 and cars was brutal, plus I didn't improve my overall score from last week. I got a 503 on both kaplan 2 and 3, and cars went down to a 126 while psych went up a point. Kind of bummed since I've been killing the verbal Q pack so not sure why my score would go down. Also taking the test in a month and still have 2 EK exams to take and the 2 AAMC ones along with section bank.

Oh okay…I'm taking the July 22 one though so hope it's not too late for me 🤔

From what I've heard, it depends on how competitive you are. For example, if your GPA is low or you don't have many EC's, you would be at a disadvantage compared to someone with a high GPA and solid EC's.

The hell AAMC... Apparently 1.01 is the same is 1? And 0.034 is the same as 0.037? I don't know how I'm supposed to tell when a number is "significantly" different...

Hey guys! I am retaking the MCAT on the 9th (507; 128, 123, 128, 128 on May 14th). I am wondering what I should do for a practice test. I have already taken the AAMC sample and FL scored back in May and I am afraid I will remember the answers from May. I took a NS FL (free) (508) a couple days ago, but I want to do one tomorrow for practice. Should I retake an AAMC test or take a Kaplan/Princeton test? Any other segesstions Thanks!

61% on B/B SB. Overall not too upset. Got tripped up on some of the random ass metabolism stuff. Overall felt like my data interpretation didn't do too bad. 3 passages of the passages in the middle I didn't understand at all, and I missed everything on those, otherwise I was pretty solid throughout.

Honestly... I would buy an EK if you have the $ or can find someone who would lend you a login. They are so much better than anything else out there besides AAMC.

The practice is good! Don't worry about the score, focus on understanding why you got things wrong. I often find that the wrong answers I select are too specific -- usually correct answers get at the main idea of the passage while maintaining some ambiguity but also applying directly to the author's ideas. This most prominently appears in the "main idea of the passage...", "would support x", "author would most agree with...", or "least likely to agree with..."type questions. usually if you understand the main idea of the passage, the smaller, unrefined details of answer choices jump out at you as being incorrect.

Also, here's an interesting tidbit (don't look if you haven't taken CARS QPack 1):

If you look at #27... one thing I noticed is the answer is actually in the title of the passage at the bottom. Despite there being other ways to figure out the answer, the "American Academy of Advertisers" is clearly a "professional association of advertisers!" Thought that was interesting.

is anyone familiar with UV-vis spectroscopy and conjugation and can explain it in a few sentences?

Also I wanted to double check if this sentence is accurate: "conjugation results in absorbance at higher wavelengths"

Honestly... I would buy an EK if you have the $ or can find someone who would lend you a login. They are so much better than anything else out there besides AAMC.

I bought EK 3 because of the hype and I honestly don't think it's completely warranted. I actually disliked some of their questioning where they'd make four of the answer choices the same but change one or two variables. All exams have that, but I think they overkilled it on that exam -both in CARS and the science sections. Overall, I'd say the exam was okay, nothing too special.

Also the format of their exams are the same as pre-2015 MCAT, with all the questions on the same page.

I just did the CARS Q pack today. I definitely thought the first half was harder than the second. But I didn't divide the score so Idk if I actually did worse.

Some of the things that I noticed I got wrong was that a statement the author made would follow up with a more subtle statement and I would keep the strong tone for both in the answer. The explanation was something like "Yes the author said both of these things, but only the first thing was an assertion with supporting evidence" I'm like -_-

Edit: score was 80% timing was a little longer than on NS, but with ample time left, I chose not to go back though because I needed to go to work lol.

I loathe the most evidence/least evidence/no evidence questions. Hardest questions in my opinion.
