Just received an interview invite from NYU! Can't believe it.
DAT: AA: 22 TS: 22, GPA: 3.5, Residency: TX
Application Complete and Under Review: Oct. 11
congrats!! Can I ask what dates were available to schedule?

I had options to interview from the 8th until next week but I graduate this Friday in FL so that didn't work. Now I am scheduled for the 12th of January.

GPA 3.75
PAT 19, RC 26, TS 20, AA20
When I called tufts they said the CR and PAT are important factors for the DAT score so maybe NYU is the same.
150+ hours of shadowing and i currently work for an oral surgeon, and have for the last year.
I sent primary apps September 20ish.

I am pretty stressed too because even of sept. is a pretty late app. I wouldn't be too worried because next cycle we will have it in extra early ahha.

Hey, so I applied around that time in September too... actually a few days before you (15th). I got an interview invite about two weeks later in the beginning of October, interviewed in the beginning of November, and accepted on the 1st.

Your stats look fine. However, And don't hold me to it, but I think that NYU is a high DAT score favoring school....this is the vibe I got after talking to Dr. Mejia earlier on in the year. Definitely wait it out and Good luck!

One of my letters wasn't submitted until about 4 days ago (from a dentist I work for) and so i think that is what was holding my interview. Uggh, I wish I had everything in early and I would know. Congrats on the acceptance! Any interview tips?

Thank you! My advise to you is to not recite and just don't be nervous. have you had any interviews yet?

At NYU you have two, one formal and one informal. My informal was like 5 minutes and just talked about my classes, and the only question he asked me was if I thought there would be a transition into dental school. The formal interview was super chill and laid back. I think we talked about the NBA for the first few minutes LOL He also told me a few stories, and just asked very standard questions. What caught me off guard a bit was that he started the interview off asking me if I had any questions for him.

i interviewed at Temple, and it was maxed at 5 min and was pretty stressful because of the time limit. They started my interview with me asking questions too so I hope I ask better questions 😛 thanks for your help!

I just declined my interview offer from NYU since I already received two acceptances that I am willing to attend! Hope this helps other candidates who applied to NYU!

oh did you have 3 recommendation letters in without the dentist's letter? My dentist is also taking a long time to submit her letter but I already have 3 others in...

I had three science letters and it wasn’t until the dr submitted and i emailed NYU and a couple others to update them and then the invite came !

I'm from California confused af on how the hell imma find a roommate in New York

Right. But did they say why you got it? Or how you got it? If you dont mind me asking.
I think it's based on DAT and gpa. They said it is based on my past academic achievements, and anticipation of future accomplishments at NYU. I have to maintain 3.5 gpa to get it annually renewed though.

They said that merit based is based on the college you go to, and the number and difficulty of science courses you’ve taken and your performance in them

Hey guys, so I wanted to share my info and stats and get some feedback to see if there's still a chance for me to hear for an interview.
I am a senior at my university and am graduating in Spring 2018. Psychology major, bio minor
overall GPA: 3.4, science GPA: 3.2
DAT: AA: 19, TS: 19, RC: 21, GC: 19, B: 19, OC: 21, QR: 14, PA: 14
I applied in late June/ early July
I have hundreds of hours worth of community service, shadowing, research, and I've also been working at my mom's dental practice.
I feel like my stats are pretty average, but I've been reassured that they're fine and sufficient to get in. However, I've been rejected from six schools already and no interviews so far. What I assume is holding me back is the fact that I'm a psych major and I don't have sufficient human biological sciences completed. I have almost all of my pre-reqs (will be taking Physics 2 and Biochem in the spring (although biochem is not a pre-req for NYU), and am currently taking Genetics, and Microbio. Next semester I'll be taking Physics 2, Biochem, Physiology, and Medical Terminology. I feel like these classes are bringing me towards the right track but since the bulk of my undergrad career has been mainly psychology and chemistry pre-reqs, I feel like it's a contributing factor as to why I'm not having any luck.
Although I'm already thinking it's more likely that I'll have to apply again next cycle with more classes and better stats, I am still waiting and hoping to get in to NYU by the skin of my teeth. NYU is my dream school and out of the 18 schools I applied to, this is the one I really only care about. I heard NYU takes notice if you show interest in them so I've made the effort to contact the admissions office every now and then to let them know of any updates, I requested to be added to a mailing list for any events they may have for undergrad students, and I recently sent out a letter of intent expressing my interest in their program. Now I'm just waiting and crossing my fingers to get an interview in the spring.
Any insight, wake up calls, or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Wontonamera I literally made this account to reply to your concern.

I just want to let you know that your classes or major have nothing to do with it! I even heard that they would take a psych major over a science major because you would be more well rounded. I Actually majored in Psychology as well and no minors and took the minimum required science classes I needed to take in order for me to apply to Dental school. I also graduated from a "non-name" school (Just incase you thought that was another reason. I have a 3.8 GPA and a 3.8 science GPA and got an acceptance to NYU. My DAT TS was 21 and my AA was 22. So you still have a huge chance!!! Lots of people will be declining NYU and so your luck might just turn up!. If anything, there is nothing wrong with a gap year - a gap year actually strengthens your application. (I on my gap year now)

Just going to give my thoughts since you asked... overall it sounds like you have a really strong application, but you have to bring that perceptual ability score up. That’s the biggest section that they look at and a 14 is way below average. I brought my 17 up to a 19 and they still questioned me about it in my interview. If you can practice perceptual and bring it up then you should have no problem getting in. You can take the DAT again and send them your new scores! With all of this said, I hope that you get lucky and get accepted. I wish you the best of luck 🙂

Okay I've asked an upperclassman if someone else usually makes it - if not, I'll set it up and post the link.

Very excited to meet you all next fall!

I feel like NYU values DAT scores over GPA. There are plenty of 23 AAs to balance out the 19 AAs, but it's tough to balance out a 14 PA. The 14 PA puts you in a tough spot for NYU 🙁.

PA and QR are the least important scores, so I don't think it's hopeless. Have you gotten any interviews this cycle? I wouldn't rush into retaking (because an 18 AA could crush your app), but if you retook and improved the PA I think it would help a lot.

I would say correlation =/= causation. It could just be that most people that got in HAPPENED to have higher pat scores. Moreover, this data shows that 5% of people have less than 17! that means 20 people who got in have less than 17, that's pretty substantial.

The causation being: high PA -> acceptance? The big problem is that 14 is quite a bit lower than 17. There are studies on it, but here's how NYU responded to ADEA's survey.

The good news is that PA is the only section that repeaters score higher in than first time test takers.

I agree that PA isn't what gets people into dental school though.

I like how the author says practice may "obliterate that effect"

Thank you Monera! It gives me hope! In the case that I don't hear back at all, I'm going to reapply next cycle and push back graduation and take more human biological sciences like Anatomy, Histology, Immunology, possibly take the DAT again try to beef up my application.

Thanks a lot! All of this data is really helpful. Right now my main focus is on finishing strong with my remaining classes. However, if I don't hear back in the spring, I will reapply next cycle, take advantage of the extra time I have, and bulk up my DAT scores. Besides taking traditional practice tests for PAT, I was entertaining taking a ceramics course thinking that maybe it would help with my manual dexterity and the PAT; any thoughts on this?

I would say take those classes if you can guanatee yourself that you will do well in them. Do not force yourself into a bad scenario.....lower GPA because you want to beef up your science. I went to NYU undergrad and taking all those in a semester is a lot to handle...

My biggest recommendation is to get your DAT up UP. I applied with a 3.3-3.4 sGPA but with a 23DAT 23TS. Grades are also only a part, but seeing that you have great extracurriculars, I would say that - major factor are your grades right now. If you can get that DAT above 21+ I would say you have a good shot for an interview at least, esp if you have been showing interest.

NYU also gives out interviews till like march or something I heard....so you are not out of time just yet!

Best of luck to you!

Hahahah i actually took a ceramics class for that same very reason. Not sure if it helped my app but I did tell them my favorite class was ceramics when they asked me what my favorite class was. Also you really dont NEED to take any other class if you did well on the pre reqs. I'd say do better on the PA (I got a 17-phewwww) and write a really good Personal statement. I'm praying you get in so we can be classmates!!

where did you find this table ???

Can people find the page without using that link? Cause I couldnt find it unless I used your link

where did you find this table ???

I used the ADEA Dental School Explorer. Are you just interested in the 5-95th percentile thing? There are also excel spreadsheets that people have made: doc toothache's, Cluubias2's.
Table 17 from the link in my signature [(ADA HPI, 2017) Dental Education Series - Report 2: Tuition, Admission and Attrition] also has averages, but they use different numbers (eg. ADA HPI lists NYU at 21.2 while ADEA lists NYU at 21.1).

Thanks a lot! All of this data is really helpful. Right now my main focus is on finishing strong with my remaining classes. Wait, I wouldn't use a ceramics course to improve the PAT. What did you use to study for it first time? You have to use software (meaning not just a book). I used Bootcamp, but there are alternatives that are probably just as good.

I was in a similar situation to you, and my grades definitely slipped because I was always thinking about dental school. It was horrible. I knew that Mejia called applicants at a certain time (to let them off the waitlist), and I was always checking my phone 🙁. Just remember that it's hard to "retake" your GPA. When your Fall grades come in, you could do the academic update. All you can really do now is finish strong.

I think the 19s show that you're within striking range. I wouldn't give up. In a decade, you'll forget how horrible the gap year was (if you even have to take one of course!). I feel like good study tools can help pump up GC, OC, & PA scores. It's hard to improve Bio or RC.
