****The Official Oregon (OHSU) Class of 2024 Interview/Acceptance Thread****

Any in-state applicants still waiting for an interview?

Also to those who are in-state with questionable DAT scores, I spoke with the Dean of admissions (Mark) asking if he thought I should retake mine and he said absolutely not.

My scores: PAT: 22, RC:20, QR: 18, BIO:19, GC: 19, OC: 19, TS:19. AA:19

Hello,

I have a question regard the status update for OHSU school of dentistry. I was invited for an interview. However, after the interview my application status changed from "Invited for Interview" to "Received/Application Complete." Did this happen to anyone else?
Happens all the time for a bunch of schools. Means absolutely nothing so just ignore it!

Yes, the same thing happened to my status! I’m assuming it just happened with everybody who interviewed.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get an interview from here/know how often interviews are sent out? OHSU is one of my top choices but I don't know how to make them aware of it without potentially coming off as a bother since it's Pre-December still

Since they send invites so late they interview well into May of the new year.

As for getting an interview, all you can do is wait until your app is reviewed and perhaps just sent any application updates (if applicable).

Are you an in-state applicant?

During my interview the admissions faculty stated OHSU interviews only 125 applicants prior to December for 80 spots. I wouldn't stress over it, as stated above, they will be sending out more interviews later on in the cycle, there is ample time left.

I didn't do anything special to receive an interview other than I believe I am a well rounded student. Also, if you didn't know, the school is big on in state applicants and the majority of OOS are from WICHE states (of which I am neither) so that does play a large factor.

I interviewed on November 5th and I was accepted on November 15th!!!! Unbelievably excited. I honestly can't believe I heard back so quickly.
Medical or dental? This is dental forum.

Has there been any other waves of invites besides the initial October 1st one?
I don't think so, I heard that the person in charge of coordinating interviews was about to go on maternity leave a few weeks ago, so they are probably waiting for her to come back before they send out their second round.

I talked to Mark an hour ago and he said they are going to send out a lot of acceptances this year. They are in a meeting right now to finalize everything. Good luck to all!

If anyone knows any students at OHSU currently (or you are one) would you mind pm-ing me?? I thought one of the downfalls to the OHSU interview was we only got to talk to one perspective student and I just have some questions. Thanks!!

If anyone knows any current ohsu students can you pm me as well?

If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me, I’m a DS1 at OHSU and I’d love to help in any way I can!

For those more familiar with OHSU, do you think it could be beneficial for me to send a letter of interest to admissions? I didn’t receive the competitive application earlier in the cycle but I still feel like I could offer a lot to the school! I’m just not sure how the committee feels about letter of interests since I know some schools don’t really consider them

Do you guys know if we got the competitive email, how long after that email do we interview invite?

It doesn't automatically mean you will be interviewed. I received it last year, but never got an invite. Then have made massive improvements to my application and have not been told I was "highly competitive" this year.
are you in state or out of state?

Last interview cycle I sent in a letter of interest and explained my strong ties to Oregon (married in Oregon, family in Oregon on both sides, visited Oregon frequently as a child, want to practice here after school, etc.). I was an out-of-state applicant and I felt that these were important things to tell them to show how interested I was in attending OHSU. I received an interview invite a week later. I don’t know if it is because of the letter of interest, but I like to think that that was what got me an interview. Now here I am at OHSU! Sending a letter of intent wouldn’t hurt.

Hey guys. My interview is next Friday. Can anyone give me some tips?

OHSU accepts most students they interview. Especially after the first round of acceptances. The faculty is very nice and just wants to get to know you and see if you are a normal person and are amicable. Be yourself like everyone says. It is a basic interview process if it hasn’t changed since I interviewed last cycle. You get a tour, lunch with a current student, student shadowing, and the two individual interviews. PM me if you have any questions, good luck!

Thank you!
I submitted my application on July 24th and took my DAT on July 31st. I don't remember exactly when I was verified, but I think it was about one month after my DAT date. I hope that helps!

Hello all,
My interview is coming up soon, and I wanted to ask how long after the interview do you get notified of thier decision?

Current student here. I have heard that if you interview after Dec 1 you usually hear within days if you are accepted. PM me if you have any questions.

Hey guys. I got accepted to OHSU today. I have one concern and it’s that I havent completed one of the prerequisites, which is a physiology lab. However, I am an international student and already graduated. Is anyone in the same situation as I am? Does OHSU suggest the students what to do?

At your interview they should have had a slip in your folder that said what was not yet completed and at least during my interview, they went over everyone's to make sure we had no questions. Did this not get brought up during yours? I would reach out to them because I know in my interview group there was one person who had some issues too but I do not know how they were resolved.

Yeah I asked Mr Mark Mitchell about it. He said there would be a solution for me. I’m just wondering if anyone is in the same boat as I couldn’t see how I could complete the required class now

I had a conversation with Mark today about the application process. He was very nice, but I am heartbroken as it sounds like OHSU does not review applications very holistically. From my understanding GPA is a high priority, and there is little consideration for the type of major (other than science vs non-science), extracurriculars or the course-load. I was hoping that with my experiences and extracurriculars I would be able to be more selective with schools I applied to, unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case. Since GPA is such a big factor (and happens to be my only weakness) does anybody have any suggestions for schools that take a more holistic approach to their review process, and might give Oregon residents a shot?

Residency:
Oregon
Application complete date: application fee received 8/6
Major/courseload: Microbiology w/ Chemistry minor – academic scholarship min of 15 hours/term
GPA (science, non-science, overall): 3.18, 3.93, 3.32
DAT (AA/TS/PAT): 21/19/26
Extracurriculars: Collegiate Athlete - 4 hrs/weekday and additional recruiting or travel on weekends. Microbiology Lab TA.
Volunteering: Many hours - Mobile Dental Van as a Dental Assistant, Blood Drives, Tutor, etc.
Shadowing: 200+ hours: general, ortho and perio. Also, took a tour of a dental lab and attended OHSU's Dive Into Dentistry Program.
Work Experience: Working as a Dental Assistant

Mark made it sound like this cycle is significantly more competitive than last year. Last year a 3.22 was considered “competitive,” this year you need to have something somewhere higher than a 3.32. He said they are about halfway through this cycle, but made it sound like a low GPA meant your chances were extraordinarily slim.

did you apply to UCSF? I can attest that it is a school that is very big on holistic review! if you look at their class of 2023, the gpa range is 2.70-4.0!

Accepted today at 6:42 PM! My interview was on Friday, 01/24/2020. I AM SO EXCITED! :soexcited:

Side question: How is everyone coming up with their $1,000 deposit? I don't have anyone I can ask a loan for. I am assuming there are no loans we can take out for this? I would put it on a credit card, but they want a check.

So happy for you! Congrats!!! Maybe if you called them, they might be able to make an exception for you and take your deposit by credit card?

They let me pay with a credit card last year because I sent in a check and had forgotten to sign it! Just call and ask.
