I'd like to help. I felt I had a solid personal statement and a knack for conveying a sense of professionalism, and at the same time, a mellow/affable nature in my primary/secondaries/interviews.

I am gonna go on hiatus until after finals are done.😳

Just finished a couple personal statements, I am able to read a couple more if people want to send them to me in a PM.

Im in my glide year, and I love reading and editing essays.

I am a very critical reader and will put plenty of time into the essay, if you have done so yourself.

If you email me a crap essay though, don't be offended when I let you know that you should rethink your premise.

Just PM em to me and I can get em back to you within a week, probably less.

Credentials:
MCAT: T writing.
Some writing awards from college that won't mean anything to you.
I've worked as a tutor, substitute teacher, & debate coach at stuck up private high schools in NYC & LA. I have done such editing for college admissions PS's. I think my strong PS got me into USC (and 6 other MD interviews) in spite of pretty weak grades.

I will be blunt and honest about your style and your general idea. I will correct grammar. I will make suggestions for reworking generally awkward phrases.

I would prefer that you send me a *tiny* profile of yourself if you send me your statement. (GPA, MCAT, what you think your weak spot is in your application)

I've got a week of "free time" coming up (3-16-09 to 3-22-09). I'd be willing to read a few statements during that time. I can read for content, flow, offer suggestions/revisions, constructive criticism. Let me know!

can someone remove me. i have finals then a 5 month break. unsurea bout internet access so yeah. good luck to everyone though

Can you put me on the list?

I have applied to many medical schools, and have been accepted to 2 so far, and have interviewed at many medical schools.
I can help with the ideas, and giving a positive impression on the admission officers.

I have my first draft completed. If you want to read just send me a PM which explains your status in school. I'm kinda nervous about someone jacking my essay even though its pretty unique.

Apparently you can't send links via tiny-url on here, so to everyone I just sent a private message to, I'll send you the link to my actual essay if you reply 🙁

Thanks to everyone who's helping out with this thread -- you're all fantastic.

I am willing to read essays as I had great help when I was writing my essay for grad school. I have degrees in Biology and Psychology so I had to write a lot of essays during undergrad. I did not apply to medical school (will be attending school for Occupational Therapy) but would love to help out!

To those of you who will be sending personal statements, please realize that the professionalism starts here and now.

Acting self-entitled or rude to those from whom you are requesting an edit or critique of your personal statement cannot be beneficial as it will only lead to the deterioration of the kind-hearted nature of this forum that makes such threads as this one helpful.

Some of us work full-time, are med students, are finishing up college, or even have a family. We give this service because it is currently enjoyable, but your behavior and lack of courtesy can make it unpleasant and ruin our desire to continue.

Read around these threads, and you will realize what a small world it can be for SDNers...what a misfortune it could be when that med student you insulted ends up being your student interviewer at a school next year!

I will read, I really appreciated this resource when I was writing mine. I am good with overall writing style, flow, transitioning from topic to topic, etc. Not good about punctuation, pretty good with grammar and spelling. No credentials other than being accepted this year and I have always been called an "excellent writer".

For the 2010 applicants, where are you getting your PS prompts? The AMCAS isn't out until May.😕

There is no specific PS prompt. You are given full autonomy in regards to what you want to write about, though it should be geared to answer the question "why do you want to go to medical school?"

This is an invaluable thread, all right. I thank all the readers for their efforts.

Do you think it's okay if I wait until May when AMCAS comes out? I feel like I need to know what the exact prompt is.

That's up to you and how long you think it would take you to write a decent essay. If you can do it in a few weeks, more power to you. Though I would suggest trying to at least put a few ideas down on paper now.

Hi,

I was hoping you may be able to have read my PS? I am applying to PA school and thought you may be able to help me.

Thank you!

OMG!!! It's so hard to dig those proofers out one-by-one. Can someone at least provide their emails ???

OMG!!! It's so hard to dig those proofers out one-by-one. Can someone at least provide their emails ???
As mentioned at the beginning of the thread, their email addresses are not to be posted for their own protection. And it would not be right for a 3rd party to provide their e-mail addresses without their permission.

Just PM them and then wait. Not too hard. If they are too busy to check their PM, it is unlikely that they will have time to check your PS even if you sent it via e-mail.

...so yeah, continue digging them out one by one. :lame:

Sorry to the people who have PMed me in the last week or so... haven't been able to get around to responding, and won't be able to for the time being. Please put me in the TU list.

Hi, I'd like to be added to the readers list.

Bachelors degree in science field, then completed a Masters degree in the humanities/social sciences (literature intensive). Interviewed at several allopathic medical schools and will be matriculating at a University of California institution. Have helped numerous people with personal statements and am a very experienced writer. If you'd like an extra set of eyes to refine your personal statement, look no further. I would be happy to help.

Hey everyone,

Is anyone willing to privately talk with me (PM, AIM, Email, whatever) about beginning my personal statement? I want to at least get some ideas down as I have many in my head. I just need a little guidance on the direction to go with them.

I am petrified of coming across as fake/cheesy/cliché/unoriginal.

I'm in the same boat. Please someone help Zona and me.🙂

I've read many pre-dental students and a few of my pre-med friends' PS. I'm willing to help out anyone. Will be attending Tufts Dental next year...

Ok. I need some SERIOUS help starting my personal statement. I need to get it done in the next few weeks...would anyone be willing to PM me or something about helping me too, along with the other two above me?!?! THANKS!!!!! 👍

I got into med school last year and don't mind reading a few ps a week (i may take longer to reply if i get more than that). Good luck everyone!

I have a lot of down time between classes and would be glad to help people with their PSes. I have already been accepted so im not going to steal it or anything.

Qualifications: T on MCAT writing, have done very well in all of my writing classes. I am almost sure my PS landed me interviews at several high ranked schools since my MCAT sure as hell didnt, so I think it is safe to say I have a good idea of what they are looking for.

I am a very very thorough editor in terms of content, clarity, consistency, fluidity, etc. I am not a master of grammar, so look elsewhere for that. Also, do not send me a first draft, I will only help with final drafts. PM me first for an email, then send your PS in .doc or .txt format to the email I give you. I will be honest (no sugar-coating) but not mean.

Feel free to add me to the reader list...you can PM me or email me at [email protected]

Some background info: 35S, Engineer --> MD which was the topic of my PS. Most importantly, every interview I had (6 total) brought up my PS as the conversation opener.

Helped a few guys out, willing to help anyone else.... Please note I'm putting off biochem and a lab report 😀

Having applied more than once (and being successful this year!), I've seen my fair share of application essays, of all sorts, and would love to help out.

Qualifications:
*Double humanities minor, A's in all my college english classes
*800 SAT II (Back when writing was a separate test!), aka grammar and writing style
*S on MCAT writing, both times
*Private tutor/test prep teacher in some capacity for nearly 10 years, have worked for some pretty prominent test prep companies
*Back in the day, when I was writing my own, I compiled a cache of readers, professors, doctors, medical students, english majors, public policy grad students, etc., some on adcoms, some not, and spent a crucible of a month forging my own PS.

Extras:
*I'm not in school🙂
*Interviewers referred to my PS for questions
*I'm pretty sure my experiences/essays were an important component to my acceptances/compensated somewhat for my numbers

Please send requests to [email protected]

Good luck, 2014!

Please add me to the list as well. I have a strong background in English and grammer. I used to teach English as well. I will not only offer constructive criticism, but can also assist with developing ideas and making your personal statement deliver its purpose. I helped a few of my friends last year who were applying at schools.

Need to be removed for now, just have too much else going on.

Please add me to the list, i reviewed my personal statement and help some friends reviewed their personal statements. The main thing about your personal statement is that it should convey your ideas .

I'll read for content and maybe some mechanics. DO Applicants, I'll especially read yours for content because I'm pretty sure that I got accepted because of the content in my PS and secondaries to all the DO schools that I applied to. I'm pretty much a solid writer who knows how to set myself apart from the rest.

Credentials: S, R on writing for MCAT (took it twice), As in couple of upper level writing courses in undergrad, and frequently write inspirational essays on other forums. I pretty much kickass at writing powerful pieces of writing so I will definitely give you major pointers.

Hi, please put me on the readers list. I will read/edit Personal statements.

I scored 39 on mcat ( 13 on VR, and T on writing ). Currently in med school but I have some spare time and would love to help some people out.

Please put me on the list.

I remember using this service years ago - it was very helpful.

I have just completed 4th of medical school and have some time before the start of residency.

Applicants may send me their essays in a PM.

I would not wait til May to start thinking about your Personal statement when people who are doing it now may be submitting on some of the first days. It can sometimes take a couple months to get it how you want it.

The personal statement requires you to answer one main question:

"Why motivations do you have to go into medicine and what have you done to show this interest?"

That's the main gist of the essay.

I have reviewed essays all summer in 2007, some last year, some in 2006, written my own, read some for my friends as well.

In all of them, this has been the general gist.

I am going to go on hiatus, as well. I have a backlog of statements to read and I want to get through those before I get anymore. Thanks!

I am swamp with essays and with life, so let me get through what I have first. I would like to get back to these individuals in a timely matter.

Please put me on hold. Thank you.

I remember getting swamped with personal statements when I moderated the thread for a previous year--and I wasn't even on the list to review them. In light of this string of reviewers who have (temporarily) had enough, I want to thank y'all for doing this.

A very helpful service, to be sure! My English major girlfriend thanks all of you for sparing her the misery of reading my writing.

I need to be put as temporarily unavailable. I'm so behind on those PS's that have been sent to me!

ok so i applied to schools this year, kind of late (december), didnt get in and wasnt surpised bc so late, plan on reapplying in june, can i use the same personal statement as before? will the schools notice that i used sames ps as last year??

I have a rough draft PS that I wrote as an assignment to a graduate studies class. The prof said it was good, but I would like a second opinion from you guys. So how do I go about having someone read my PS?

LizzyM said that she has never known an adcom member who went into the archives to read a previous application. If you've done anything productive in this past year, however, it's worth updating your essay.

You can but mabe metioning one or two lines of what you will be doing new this year if it is a reapp because of grades issues or lack of ECs might be a good help to your application.

Koko_eats,

LizzyM only represents one school. I'm pretty sure at my own home institution that they do see if you've improved and listened to the things they said you need improvement on. it seems that almost everyone of the people I know who've reapplied to USF and gotten in have done so cuz they've improved the areas they were told they were weak in. Of course, then again, they would see those weaknesses in the new app anyhow. but I do agree otherwise that using the same Ps won't hurt. Just make sure to add what will be different if it was not just due to a late app but because you have shown something different or plan to for the upcoming cycle.
