The Official September 18, 2014 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
PS - Fair. There were a lot of conceptual questions I wasn't 100% sure on. No passages stood out as being particularly difficult.
VR - Fair. I thought the passages were very easy to read, with some hard questions throughout the test.
BS - Tough. Very experimental. The first passage was tough for me, and slow to get through.

Personally I thought this exam was really easy. Now when I say this keep in mind, I went into the exam knowing I was going to void because I wasn't closed to finished studying. Therefore, I had no pressure on me, so I took this exam as relaxed as could be.

However, based on taking the MCAT before, I felt this exam was easier so I do think the scale might be harsher?

PS- I really can't remember it. They do a great job mixing topics and hitting on everything. I though the passages were easy to understand, except one where a famous guy was brought up in the intro.
VR- Thought this was easy. No passages were confusing. Think the scale will be tough.
BS- First passage was really tough. Never studied anything regarding that topic before. Purely experimental. Didn't really understand it much. Not much orgo at all and the orgo that was present was basic.

I thought extremely hard if I should void or not, but ultimately I knew I had much more to study. I hope this doesn't backfire on me because for some reason I feel as if the January exams are going to be brutal (just a hunch based on nothing) and that I will never get an exam this fair ever again.

I have a question for you guys though. How do you study for those "experimental" type passages in bio? I don't see how you can study for those sorts of things

My sisters father in law passed away last night so it was a hectic night. I hope I did will enough that I don't have to retake it I agree the exam was easy but it was a bit ambiguous and on all the things I was uncomfortable with.

Thank you. I didn't really know him but I got sick couple days ago and then yesterday my sister called saying he maybe on his last breath. Passed away 5 minutes before I got there. He basically had 4 strokes. Not simultaneously. But 2 occurred simultaneously last night.

similar scenario but I had no clue how verbal went (first passage threw me off). So I voided it. I knew I could have done a lot better. I felt I could have done better on the sciences despite being relatively comfortable with both.

PS: More heavy on physics 2. I don't recall any passages that were incredibly difficult but alot of the questions came down to narrowing between 2 best options. That could really go either way. Feeling iffy.
VR: Similar to AAMC tests but slightly harder (this is coming from consistent 12+ on verbal)
BS: Very, very experiment heavy. Majority bio but the orgo that was in there was very difficult. A couple of the free standing questions were just out of the blue.

Prediction: My AAMC average was upper 30s but honestly that felt like a low 30, upper 20 even. Idk why I didn't void to be honest. Registering for January ASAP.

My immediate thoughts: MUCH better than July 12th.

For today, verbal sticks out as the worst for me. A lot of the passages were truly interesting and straightforward, but the questions were rough. I'm really worried about this score.

I loved all of the gen chem in PS. I thought the physics was pretty fair and much much better than July 12th. Physics is my weakest and although there were a lot of questions that I was unsure of, I thought it was fair.

BS was killing me at first. I was so lost with some of the passages and just had to move on. But I ended up having extra time, went back through the tough ones and made sense out of a few questions that I guessed on before. Still not too confident.

I have to agree with you on this. Verbal was hard not because of the passages, but because of the questions. The passages were fairly easy and straightforward to read. I'm scared that I might get a 5 on this section since I kind the questions on 1.5 passages. I already have two MCAT verbal scores of 7 and 6, so I don't know if I'm shot for MD...

I wish you luck! I wanted to take the Oct/Nov and nothing was available for over a couple hundred miles for me. Stuck taking in January in a foreign city. Don't wait !

Did you run out of time? I read the last passage, but didn't get to answer all the questions! I hate VR! just need a 6-7 to be in the cycle for DO schools 🤔 fingers crossed

The general consensus is that this exam was easier than usual/expected which I do agree with. But even though it was easier did you guys still find it overall much more difficult than the aamcs? How do we practice/get ready for this exam

That organic passage though.... and organic is probably my strongest subject. I was disappointed when I kept clicking "next" in BS only to see another biology passage. But then I got the organic passage and was like honestly what is this WITCH craft. 😏

I answered all the questions for VR. Here's my dilemma for this VR. I spent ~38 minutes on the first four passages. I feel confident I got about 75% of those right. I read the fifth and seventh passage, managed to answer a couple of questions while rushing the "time-consuming" questions. I did the sixth passage (on deep sea microorganisms) and felt good about my answer choices, but guessed on one. That's why I'm scared that I may get a 5. This is the only hurdle for my MD prospects; I would hate not to be able to get into MD because I can't crack verbal...

I voided it but I felt like it was on par with the AAMCs at least the ones I attempted (aamc 3,4,5,6,7).

Odd cause I thought that passage was pretty straight forward.

Odd cause I thought that passage was pretty straight forward.

I hardly remember anything from the test. It's all a blur. I generally remember that the orgo questions weren't gimme questions like they were in the AAMC practices--they were a little trickier.

Well, here's my two cents.

PS was nothing out of the ordinary. I guess? It's my weakest section by far and I normally just finish all the questions without a second to spare. Why do I even bothering marking any questions actually? I would be SO happy with a 9. I know, not aiming very high but my AAMC PS average was a 9 and my Kaplan average was a 9.8, so that's really all I can hope for.

VR passages were pretty easy to comprehend for the most part but I still found myself hurrying just to have 7 mins left for each of the last two passages. Breezed through the passages but the questions held me up. My Kaplan and AAMC average is a 10.something.

I am actually worried about bio. I was a bio major and normally I can easily get at least a 10 on an orgo light BS (not so good at orgo). I can kinda feel the test transitioning more from a set of discrete-esque questions with a somewhat related paragraph or 2 slapped next to them to mostly experimental stuff. On the 3/22 exam I got an 11 with about 16 mins to spare, this time I didn't even have time to check my answers.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a 9/10/11... Come on 30!!! But I honestly don't know at this point. I feel like bio let me down, I can normally lean on it for some easy points.

Welp, good luck everyone!! At least it's over! And for those of you already registered again, don't get yourselves down cause now you know what to expect and what you need to work on to kick ass next time!

Okay, time for wine. So much wine.

Exactly, taking the exam today despite voiding it definitely made me think that this exam is conquerable. 🙂. I was personally pleasantly surprised how comfortable I was with most of the PS (there were 1-2 passages that threw me off) and the BS (only one passage that got under my skin). Verbal- the reason why I made sure to void: this was me for about 2-3 passages: :writer:, the rest I were fine with.

This is what scares me as well. VR becomes hard and you really lose your A-game if you are hammered with a passage or two that you don't understand at the beginning. Shuffling to other (easier) passages also makes me nervous although it sounds like the most rational thing to do.

My thoughts:

PS: I got 12,14,14 on the last 3 FLs probably got an 11 on the real thing. Really weird conceptual questions threw me off. Overall I think the most unsure I've felt about any aamc test

VR: every time I hit next I was expecting that wtf passage to smack me across the face but it never came. Less freebie questions though had to come down to a couple on quite a few

BS: nothing too crazy... Tons of experiments. One discrete asked a very specific question that I was totally clueless on... Nothing from ek101 or tbr passages covered it

Really hoping I don't have to take this beast again. Sucks we have to wait a month

PS- Was fair and didn't have too much trouble. Kind of ran out of time so had to do the last two passages quickly and probably messed them up.
VR- My biggest weakness and its not good news that everyone else suggests that it was relatively "easy"...I don't think I did too well, because the questions were really hard to get a grasp of. 🙁 Passages were okay but by the time i got to the questions, I was like WTH!!!?
BS- It was fair. even though I completely guessed on the 'hard' passage the orgo chem instilled some faith.
I don't think i revealed anything but please let me know if I did, new to SDN.
Lastly, I just pray to the VR Gods to shed some mercy.
My AAMC FL with a decent verbal score (8-10) have been 30+. This includes AAMC 8,9,10,11... Although on the other AAMC i have seen a 7 :'(.
Essentially, VR makes the difference for me...
GS and TBR VR definitely not a good reflection of AAMC. Got 9-10 left right centres on those lol fml...

Also, if you do the trial section. When do you find out how you did compared to others? Even though I did psych 4 years ago, put a good faith into that damn test lol

I agree with this, and I'll add I thought the orgo was easy but I definitely needed more practice. So how do you think you will approach studying to get better at those things you listed. Any suggestions/materials.

Those passages that got under your skin I felt as if they were no where at least in sources I've looked at.

Do more practice passages. I've been doing TBR bio for about 2 weeks prior to the exam. Definitely helped, I was better at analyzing the passages. I knew the material despite a few lapses in the bio. For the physics, I just felt thrown off. Was a bizarre PS today IMO. I'm likely going to do Kaplan 1-5. Maybe buy GS tests and redo my AAMC 3-7, 3 months after I took them. Taking my AAMC 3 again (I don't remember anything from it besides that there was two passages about Confucius and TVs lol in the verbal) in early November. Taking my first Kaplan practice test probably in 2 weeks from today.

I thankfully planned my senior schedule around this year to make my first semester light if I had to retake my MCAT.

Same here, I got below 5 on my last exam 🙁 July 24th!
DO schools told me to get at least a 6...ugh English is my 2nd language

Thanks Kob. Coincidentally, I've been doing TBR passages as well. Finished all of Physics (which I thought helped for the most part for this exam), and finished half of Chem, Bio, and Orgo passages. The 100 questions per chapter really kills me and I end up procrastinating like crazy. I don't know how to manage those 100 questions.

Anyone recommend taking TPR review course? I would like the structure since I end up getting lazy. Is their practice material/exams worth it? Do you do practice exams in this courses?

Also which source is best for verbal practice?

And anyone know if there are any openings for January in NYC/LI?

Hey I'm going to inbox you a company that I thought helped me a lot.

Guessed on 2 discretes (missed them both!) so meh.

PS: On par with practice tests. Maybe 1 hard passage. Finished with 15-20 minutes left (my typical time leftover). I know I already missed one question so probably 13 at best. 12 wouldn't surprise me either.
VR: Passages were easy to read but questions.....omg ran out of time. Literally GUESSED (25% level) on 3 questions. Worst performance of any VR of my life. Probably 9. If a miracle, 10.
BS: On par with practice tests. Even though they were "experimental", I'd say none of them were hard. All easier than Ebola passage. Missed at least one discrete so probably 13 at best. Finished with 22 minutes left and I wasn't even rushing. I usually finish with 15 mins.

Overall: The sciences were not harder than the practice exams. They were the same, maybe even easier. As such, expecting super harsh curves for both sciences. I failed verbal because I kind of panicked and ran out of time. Guessed on a ridiculous number on verbal. To future test-takers, make sure you can read and understand fast.

Hello All,

August 15th Retaker here.
Background Info - My AAMC Practice Average ~ (12.5/10.5/12.5) with AAMC 9-11 being 36-38
August 15th Score (PS/VR/BS) - (12/09/11)

How I felt on August 15th coming out - PS - BOMBED, felt I got an 8 - got a 12. Verbal - felt I got an 11 or at least a 10 - got a 9. BS - felt I must've gotten 13 because I felt it was really easy - got an 11.

How I felt today (Mind you I hadn't studied for this for like a month except PS assuming I had bombed PS, I did some quick review before this test).

PS = Easier (definitely easier) but not by a whole lot. Even break between Chem and Physics, although due to some lack in review I don't feel I performed well, and because it was an easier exam - the curve will be harsher (expecting 10-11)
VR = Harder than August 15th - At least that's how I felt, not much harder, but I felt really unfocused for some reason and I honestly doubt I can get the 10 I need to apply this cycle - expecting (9-10 ideally, miracle = 11, bad luck = 8 = can't apply this year)
BS = Harder than August 15th, First passage as others have said was very ??? and as glad as I was that there was only 1 real Orgo passage I wonder if I approached it correctly - and some of the discrete where hard, but at the same time I know If i had studied more I would've gotten them - (post-test feeling = 10-11)

Overall, to people who say this test was easy, I cannot completely disagree. Had you prepared thoroughly, you would have found PS and BS alright (when I say thoroughly, I mean THOROUGHLY). Verbal always seems like a shot in the dark to me but again the recurrent theme seems to be that you need to be able to read quickly enough to comprehend and synthesize numerous things to be able to answer the questions effectively.

Depending on the test I may re-take January for the next cycle I suppose. Good luck everyone.

My advice to re-writers --> Test's will vary and you can't always hope for the curve. What you should remember is that the MCAT tests multifactorial concepts - particularly in Physics sections - and to know how each of them apply to one another. Passages will look hard sometimes, but break it down to fundamentals because that's what is expected of you - you aren't nuclear physicist - you are a premed with the skills and potential to break down problems and approach them head on. As for Verbal, I'll get back to you if I can even manage >10, the sad truth I feel is that you must have great focus, above average reading speed, but most importantly, be able to read quickly for overall content and comprehension of what the author is thinking about and also quick comphrension of why anything is being mentioned (is it being mentioned to support something in the passage? Is it a new thought process to add on the argument? Is it an expansion of the previous point or contradicting something the author said) <-- Once you have this down, AND can read critically, you will start getting pretty decent scores.

Biological Sciences - With everything becoming so much more experimental, especially the trial sections (I've gotten biochemistry TWICE in trial now and everything is HEAVILY HEAVILY experimental), the best preparation honestly is through your courses. Courses that focus on teaching you how to critically analyse the hypothesis, methods, and conclusion will be what you want. How to best prepare? Hard to say. But remember, for all the "knowledge" in your MCAT prep books, there were experiments done to support those conclusions, and these papers are a good place to start so you don't get overwhelmed. Some of the best studies to look at are those that look at Cell survival after treatment with compound X or Y. looking at Toxicology studies can also really help you grasp experimental schemes and patterns.

Anyways hope that helps some people. @breezy16 @Distraught , good luck if you plan to rewrite.

Was my initial thought too. Reason why I voided.

I took the 1pm exam
PS - doable, seemed like regular AAMC FL, so annoyed that I wasted far too much time on one problem that could be solved with plain intuition instead of calculation when i was like 15-20 min ahead still had 10min left to spare and double check everything, im thinking 10-11
VR - went better than usual and that worries me because I feel like the scale will suck, based on how i did i am HOPING i hit 9
BS - i wanted to cry during this part, when i realized i only had like 5 minutes to spare and 3 questions to do. WTF, I am used to having atleast 15 minutes to look everything over, I always end up changing 2-3 wrong answers on my look-back :'( :'(. If that first passage was the last passage, this might've been a completely different story, it really really flustered me, and I wasted so much time on the first passage, luckily finished the last 3 questions really fast and decided to go retackle the first horrendous passage, and STILL did not understand it. Make matters worse there was a loud bass sound coming from a car outside the building -_____-. For Bio Like I feel like there was some type of background knowledge we were suppose to know for that 1st passage that I didn't know I am usually good at analyzing data and experimental passages, but this one I felt lacked some background info/ or expected us to know something I am stumped.

By the time I got to trial section I was sooo over the test, felt violated by the Bio section which is usually my best section, I just wanted to leave, don't think I did very well on trial at all.

That organic passage though.... and organic is probably my strongest subject. I was disappointed when I kept clicking "next" in BS only to see another biology passage. But then I got the organic passage and was like honestly what is this WITCH craft. 😏

Was I the only person who didn't fully understand all the steps in the experiment? I'm usually pretty good a BS (14.5 AAMC FL average) but I didn't really understand the steps in the organic experiment. However, thankfully, I think you could get the answers without really knowing the reasoning behind every step in the experiment.

PS - not horrible, am pretty sure I already missed at least 2. Fingers crossed for a decent score - this was probably my strongest section today, and that isn't saying much.
VR - there were some pretty tricky questions. Not sure what to think. Was a strange verbal section
BS - really did not like this section. Already know, again, that I missed at least 2. And ran out of time, so I might have marked and left some blank. Ughhh. Agree with the consensus that there are some questions it would have been difficult to prepare for. Not sure if I'll get 10+, but all we can do is wait at this point :bigtears:
Trial Section - holy mother of god, I don't know any of the names they threw out there - I've only ever taken 2 psych classes in my entire life, and one of them was 4+ years ago in high school... :dead:
Overall - really really hoping I don't have to retake. Being premed is SO BLOODY EXPENSIVE.

Cheers to all - we've come out on the other side! At least for now, it's over. [currently on emoji overload because stress is a struggle] :highfive:

Just something to add for VR. You need to read and understand fast. In my opinion, understanding and comprehension are not quite the same thing. You can read, understand the gist of the passage and probably feel good about it. Comprehension takes on the form of knowing why everything was the way it was, why it was argued the way it was, how everything fit together, and how the words chosen and the way the statements were conveyed determine the tone of the passage. All these things are required to do well on verbal, and at least to me it feels like it takes more than a few months of VR practice on the MCAT to increase your scores dramatically. But everyone is different and some people are naturally strong.

PS - all i remember is that it was lots of physics.
Verbal - i disliked the verbal. Passages were easy to read but the questions were often required recall of random information and some of the answer choices very difficult to choose between/
BS - Probably was a bit harder than normal... the real pain in the ass for me.

I averaged a 38 on the AAMC's (33 36 37 37 37 36 40 41), and I feel like **** about today's test... but on the hand, i always feel like **** before seeing my score.

Hey guys..November MCAT taker here.
Anyone who used the TPRH science workbook found it useful for today's test? My plan is to finish the book a couple of times before the test.

YES, agree with this so much.

Used it. It was helpful since they have a lot of good experiment-type passages. However, there is not reason to do the book "a couple times". One time is plenty.

Go find other passage sources (e.g., TBR) instead.

I'm pretty sure if I read intensely for a few more decades, I might be able to get a 12+. Even then, that'd be a challenge.

I hate verbal. I think I got owned there 🙁

I had no clue on that last orgo passage. Then again, I didn't really study orgo, but I can usually figure it out. Not this one lol.

Seems I am the only one here that-liked the bs section, I walked out thinking it was the only strong section I had.

Verbal is a crap shoot. I average 10/11 on practice but this time the passages had such strange questions that atleast 3/4 could easily have been 1 of 2 answers.

Ps for me is where I have my most doubts. I know I missed 2 which could mean several more. I just felt so uncertain on a lot of the physics . This was by far the most physics heave aamc I have seen out of all the practice tests.

Praying for a generous curve for all
Of us!

You're not the only one. I feel exactly the same as you for all the sections. I thought BS was breeze (the last orgo was tough but it was only a few questions and one discreet was very specific).

Makes me wonder if there was different tests today?

I dunno. I thought they are suppose to be the same.

I guess we could talk about general subjects to verify that. I know we can't say specifics, but from my understanding we are allowed to say "oh that histology discreet"

I hate verbal. I think I got owned there 🙁

I hope you didn't void your exam. Last time, I thought I did terrible on PS, but got a bad score on verbal.....Posttest feelings are not accurate!
