We have to pay a clinic fee which is about 10k, even though we don't use it till the last few months of first year, so YOLO lol. Now the Kit is $9,000 worth of stuff and so far we've used maybe 100$ worth. We pay for it directly to Henry Schein. We have to buy another set for second year, but third and fourth years thankfully no. Still have the clinic fees now.

No idea, it could run all the way through march or april. Several of my classmates got in around then.

Will gladly answer any other questions!

What is the total estimate for tuition + fees (not including room & board, transportation, books, personal/misc)? I've heard students say that there are hidden fees that we learn about after we matriculate. just trying to get a good estimate of what i should expect my actual costs to be. thank you!

Hidden fees? Nah they give you everything up front. Everything is as listed in the tuition sheet they give you. There is a tuition increase for next year, I dont know how much that is but its usually around 4-5% increase. Im paying about 60k this year in total, but I have support and scholarships and what not. ILl look up specific numbers when I get on my computer at home.
I would estimate probably 60k or so not including living and etc. They allocate some funds for textbooks and stuff that none of us buy except for 2 mandatory things that added up to like $100 and maybe scrubs. The biggest killer is the absurd price of instruments. Almost 10k for garbage.

Are the instrument good enough for you to use after dental school?

Are textbooks mandatory or can you get by with lecture notes, pdf, etc?

If you don’t mind answering, is your scholarship from Stony? If so, did you get it with your acceptance?

Don't know if the stuff we get first year are good after dental school lol, since alot of the stuff is simulation stuff. I think we get the clinic stuff second year where we actually treat patients. We are totally getting ripped off for the stuff we are paying for. They force us to buy and use 2.5x loupes, which is included in the instrument fee.

No I got it after the acceptance, they give it really late.

You get textbooks from a drive from your bigs so don't bother buying anything. Depending on the course you might just use powerpoints and pdfs but some others require first aid/Pathoma which you can probably get as a PDF. Others prefer book versions.

Sucks that we have to pay high cost unnecessarily.

For the scholarship, how late was did you receive it? Around this time? Is everyone automatically considered for it?

Like August lol. They give them after acceptance. There is the need based tuition waiver which They give earlier that you have to apply for, and then they give out the merit based ones way after that everyone is eligible for. They give those randomly.

Oh wow ok! Good to know there’s still a chnace for a scholarship.

how many people can get the need-based tuition waiver? also, what do you mean they give out the merit-based scholarships randomly? thank you!

Randomly as in you don't know who gets them or not. Like 10 people got them in my class. Don't know the criteria for them.

The tuition waiver I think like 4 people got them this year? It's doesn't cover the whole thing, about 4-5k is what I heard.

how much are the merit-based scholarships typically?

How strict is this.. I’m taking biochem in fall and applying in the summer. Should I even apply?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

If it's this fall that is fine, as long as grades are in before january. You can update them. you will just have a post dec interview.

i have a few more questions, any advice is greatly appreciated. thank you in advance!
1. when do orientation and classes start? how long is orientation (if we have one)?
2. what does a typical D1 day look like? what time do classes begin and end?
3. how long are our summer and winter breaks from D1-D4?
4. is there a preference for stony grads in accepting residents for their specialty programs?

1. Don't know about how your schedule is like but I can tell you what ours was like. We started orientation on august 9th. It was about 2 weeks, class finally starts on august 21st.

2. In the beginning we only had gross anatomy and it started at 1 PM and ends at 4-5 PM(could be later depending on how slow your group is), then later on once September comes along we start biochem which is at 9 am. Some weeks we have a p/f class called patient 1 which starts at 8 am.

After this first block, we begin the second block where class is not mandatory and almost everyone self studied and stays at home.

In the third block(where I am now) we begin classes classes at 10 am, and we end at around 4-5 as well. We start at 8 am only when there is patient 1.

3. Winter and spring break are 1 week long each. Summer break is 6 weeks long. All the other years I have no clue.

4. Don't know, I also don't think they will ever publicly say anything about that. That would get people to not wan't to apply. Who wants to apply to a school for residency that will show preference to someone else just cause they went to stony? I'm sure mooching up to the professors and what not helps, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Let me count them from the class of 2022 facebook. Only a few people introduced themselves, the rest are lurking in the back ground. A ton of people are random as hell in the group so I wouldnt use that as a gauge for how many spots are left. Its a mixture of D1s D2s their friends, and someone added their parents for some weird reason.

13 people posted about being 100% in. I have a feeling I know one of them in this thread based on initials lol.

Your answers were very helpful, thank you! Another question - how is the grading system like? I understand most classes are graded, and only a few are P/F. Are there +/- grades? I know some schools are only letter grades and + grades (no minuses).

Only letter grades no + -. Only the meme clinic courses like Patient 1 are p/f.

Rejected without interview. 🙁

21 DAT/ 3.55 GPA

Email Mrs Berry and she will tell you.

Likkriue, thank you! Lastly, I know students at SB are not ranked, and I've read that students' GPAs are not released to residency programs. Do you happen to know if this is true?

I do know we are not ranked against each other however they do report our GPAs. What happens is that they won't know whether your 3.6(hypothetical) is in the bottom of the heap or at the top. Being such a small class size, most years only 40-50% of people apply to residencies. And considering how many residencies there are, it's only a few people per residency. If you want to specialize, it only matters how well you do, what everyone else does doesn't matter.

How much are you guys ( who are already on) paying per year? For everything? I already oaid my NYU tuition and I won't have to worry about housing since im living at home

You are telling me you already sent in your check to NYU?
Still gotta worry about eating cellphone bill metrocard and all the other expenses.

I took out about 70-75k in total. Which is NYUs tuition not counting their instrument fee and all the other expenses such as books supplies etc.

I'm assuming you meant you paid your deposit*, in the long run stony is still far cheaper than NYU even if you lived at home.

Yeah I meant deposit. You took out 70k out PER year? For tuition, instruments, and housing and everything? I will be living with parents so dont need to worry about eating/cellphone..just metrocard. I'm just wondering if its going to be uch of a difference. The stony brook site shows that the instruments and book supplies and clinic are 20k the first year while the NYU one shows around 7k per year...

First year and second is the most expensive and I'm taking out 10k less than what they listed. Third and fourth year are cheaper because no more instrument fees.

Stonys tuition is 35k and the 20k clinic+instrument fee. Then add 15-20k for 10 months living and whatever costs So 70-75k in total.

NYUs tuition alone is 76k + 3.1k fees + 7.6k= 86.7k. Let's minus the 5k deposit and that brings it down to 81.7k.

You will also have to look at how much cheaper stony brook is in 3rd and 4th year. I estimate you probably will pay 80k less going to stony if your parents foot the rest of the bill.

I mean your parents have to pay to feed you with money anyways so I don't see how that doesn't count towards expenses. Same with the cellphone. What's the difference between feeding you at stony brook and paying for your cellphone there versus at home?

Is there any decent 1bd apartment near the campus?? I could only find 2, both of them by the lakegrove.

I don't know the real estate that well. I do know that more places will open up at around end of May and June.

These questions are targeted at anyone who is/has ever been in the position where they're deciding between Stony dental and Columbia: What made you choose one over the other? Im seriously debating between the two and can't seem to make a decision. Apart from the apparent price difference, both schools seem to be integrate themselves with med school and leave the door open to specialize. Are there any selling points for either school that made it a no-brainer when choosing? Is there anything you wish you'd known before committing? I'd be very grateful for any input on this!!

You should ask in the stony Facebook group. I’m the only one who actually posts here but I didn’t have to make that desicion. I know several classmates who did make the desicion so you should ask them.

(Pssst stony is cheaper by 100k)
