****The Official Touro Class of 2023 Interview/ Acceptance Thread****

D1 here and I strongly advise people not to apply here. They are understaffed and the environment that the professors give is extremely hostile and aggressive towards their students. A lot of my classmates are unhappy and are terrified to even approach our course directors in fear of retaliation. The only reason I chose this school over NYU was that during my interview I heard great things from their first class on how friendly the professors are and how much they care about the students and listen to their concerns. Unfortunately, it is not like that for our class. 90% of the emails we get from our professors are sarcastic and aggressive for no reason. We constantly get belittled and called unprofessional even though we have professors that legit just leave in the middle lab and not sign people off, not to mention I had many of my female friends complain to me about being sexually harassed verbally by some of the professors. During your interviews, if you want real honest answers about what the school is like, look for the D1's, we'll be the one's in teal. Good luck to all those applying this cycle.
Wow! I messaged about 5 students in Touro and they really like it. It seems that you joined SDN yesterday. Is this message the only reason you joined this forum?

@ChefPookers is this your experience as well or is this user a troll?

This has not been my experience at Touro at all!
That being said, ddsguyloading95 has brought up a few things that I'm happy to discuss.

1. Understaffed Simulation Lab.
Our preclinical lab is understaffed this semester (we had plenty of attention over our summer semester.) This has definitely been stressful. It can take some time to have our work looked over/getting signed off on assignements; however, our course directors and Dean are highly aware of the situation and are not only working diligently to bring on qualified dentists to assist in lab, but also making accommodations in lab to help make sure that everyone is getting proper feedback and getting signed off on their work.

2. Approaching Professors.
I have personally approached multiple professors to discuss issues. I've been treated only with respect and dignity.
In fact, when I had an issue with a lab grade I received I was invited to meet with the course director to look over my work together.
The only time we've ever received harsh emails has been when we, the students, weren't acting as professionals.

3. Behavior of the Staff
I have only been treated with respect and professionalism by my professors. Many of our teachers have plenty of years experience in academia.

If any of us have issues with Touro or the practices/actions of a faculty member we have excellent people in our Student Services Department who are always there for us to speak to.

Good luck to everyone this cycle.
I hope to meet you all in person when you come in for your interviews.

Yooo another D1 here and I agree with DDSguyloading95. We were promised 1 faculty member per 8 students and we have like 1 faculty member per 20 students. We were recently told that practicals would not be looked over by the course director unless the person failed which is unacceptable because all students deserve a chance to have feedback because grading isn't that objective.

Personally, there might be a few students that act unprofessional but nothing compares to the unprofessionalism that the faculty exhibit on a daily basis. They complain about each other in front of the students. When they say they'll be in the lab at a certain time to check people off. they most of the time show up late and sometimes they don't even show up at all. They act like it's our faults that we don't get signed off on time even though most of us spend alot of time outside of regular school hours to get assignments done.

Coming into the school, we were told that we can email the professors with any concerns that we might have and yes a handful of people might have abused that right but the professors took it out on the whole class and now alot of us are too scared to reach out for legitimate concerns. It's frustrating to see how well the D3 class got treated compared to us.

I think touro has the potential to be a great school but these are issues that applicants should be concerned about when choosing their future school and should also ask about during their interviews.

Can you elaborate more please? Why do you think the D3 class is being treated differently compared to your class?

If this is true, which I haven't heard about from a few ppl I know that are d2, and is a problem amongst staff, it sounds like from what they are implying that it is like that saying, "a fish rots from the head down".

D2 here. Every dental school, EVERY school in general has its share of issues. No school is perfect. The issues at touro dental school transcend across all dental schools - nothing unique here.

I would not hold weight to what sounds like a very personal grievance between a student and a professor. Some students will not like one professor while others adore that same one. You’re going to find people you don’t necessarily get along with anywhere - that’s life.

Some professors here have different techniques and approaches to teaching - the D1s have a new course director in preclinic that does not want to spoon feed the students. They have been doing impressively well on their work because of her.

It’s also quite frustrating for professors to receive emails from students requesting for other students to fail their exam because a handful of students showed up 4 minutes late. When some students display a lack of professionalism or vindictiveness, the issue is addressed to the whole class. The administration is making moves so that touro dental school graduates “good people” not just “good dentists”.

Take it as you will. Anyone complaining is lucky to be here getting the excellent education they’re receiving. I was accepted to several schools and would not trade my spot for a second.

Is there any Touro student here on SDN ?
You’re bound to get positive and negative feedback about any school. You need to check it out to see if it feels right for you. Personally as a student there I can tell you my own experience has been amazing. I get along great with the professors and my classmates and although it’s stressful and hard at times I’ve only made it this far because of how great everyone is over here. Overall I’ve had a phenomenal experience and found great mentors and best friends. I have friends in all different schools who complain about all their issues too. No school is perfect and people will always have complaints especially when dental school is stressful enough. The only thing I can agree to is the sim lab is understaffed at the moment while a lot of professors are busy helping with the newly opened clinic for the D3. I know for a fact they are actively working on this issue and it will be taken care of. My course director has been extremely accommodating and has shifted deadlines and changed exam dates to accommodate us and has assigned days specifically for prof to help students with techniques and skills. Personally I can’t imagine being anywhere else and love my experience here.

Agree with dan

Every school has growing pains but idk about this whole "professors are hostile", if anything they are probably overly nice to us. They try to accommodate and cater to everyone's issues and problems. I can tell you from personal experience that in other places things are way harder. Professors aren't as nice. The grade you get is the grade you get. There is no arguing about it. Here, yes the lab might be slightly understaffed but they are pretty nice about things and pretty considerate. If anything students probabaly take advantage of their kindness. Some of the things students do wouldn't fly in my undergrad/masters. Maybe it's me and my undergrad/master's experience but Touro staff is probably a lot more tolerant of some of the nonsense some students pull and complain about. They try to help you out so much in lab and class. Lab is probably the only thing that I agree with. It's slightly understaffed. And at time things do back up but they do listen to the people's opinion and try o make changes. Trust me other schools also have labs that back up. At the end of the day it is what you make off it. There is good and bad at every school. This is going to be true no matter where you go.

Another D1 here. I genuinely agree that others that every dental school will have their fair share of problems, and Touro being a new school may have more than others, but that is something to consider before making the decision to come here. That being said, being a student at Touro allows us to have more of a say when it comes to curriculum, clubs and lab. The professors are very understanding, especially when it comes to moving quizzes and exams to acomodate, and are MORE than willing to go over the exams, quizzes and lab practicals with you one on one. The professors always say that "our learning is their top priority- and they are here for us". The professors will give you extra review sessions, and make time to meet with you if you need extra help in the lab. Regarding the issue of not enough faculty, the school is actively hired more faculty to address these issues. I am more than happy with my experience at Touro, and am happy that I chose this school over other well established schools, because of the fact that we, as students have more of an opportunity to contribute to the future of this school and have a voice towards changes that we want made.

Thank you so much for all the info and feed back from current D1 and D2 your input helped me alot about Touro. Touro is my first choice and my interview come up on November.

Good luck, everyone. I hope you guys a successful interview with Touro. D1 here. Touro has many wonderful doctors such as Dr. Tou, Dr. Block, Dr. Goldfinger,..who are so caring, and helpful. I love dentistry more because of them.

Hey there, another D1 here. I'm having a great time over at Touro. The staff has been great. They've continued to work and address any ongoing issues that students may have throughout each course. In my opinion, they've been working towards each student's success. Like others have stated, they've adjusted schedules and provided review sessions as well as multiple study materials that enhance our knowledge and skill. I'm enjoying the vibe at Touro, the D2 & D3 as well as the staff are easy to approach. If anything, they often go out of their way sometimes and approach you. The school themselves host various events throughout my time here that allows you and the faculty to interact like small lunch-ins as well as other big-time events. Overall, my experience at Touro has been great so far. Hopefully you all who interview will feel the same there!

Hit me in the DMs if ya'll got questions. Try to catch us Teal kids around at the interview~ 😉

Hi everyone! I'm interviewing on December 12th and wanted to know if anyone was interviewing on that same day? Looking to make some friends and possibly share a room with!

I'm also a D1 at Touro, and I am absolutely LOVING it here!

No school is perfect, and there are things that could always be improved. but compared to other schools from speaking to friends and visits, Touro has much better vibes.
We have fantastic professors (a lot of former Columbia professors!), and the science classes are mostly taught by New York Medical College faculty. We get a well-rounded pre-clinic/clinical experience, and of course, the school has brand new, state of the art technology/sim lab/clinic. There are plenty of extra opportunities available - such as clubs, research, teaching assistants, intramural sports, guest lectures etc.
Most importantly, the students for the most part are very friendly and professional, and overall it is a complete privilege to be a student here. If anyone has any specific questions, please feel free to message me.
Good luck to all of those applying! It's not an easy process to go through, but once you get in, you will see that it was all worth it.

Hi Luckyone1121. I am from California too. How do you like New York in compare to California?

Well personally I don't like New York for many reasons: cost of living, rents are overly priced... living conditions not worth of paying and many others. Btw i lived in southern California and the weather is nice and not to expensive as New York

I live in Southern California as well. Do you have a plan to come back to Cali after your graduation?

Congrats! I’m interviewing at touro dec 12! I also applied to midwestern and lecom but I submitted my app there mid October. Let me know if you hear from lecom and midwestern.

okay, well in that case go for it! I haven't really talked to anyone about scores nor do people really talk about them so I couldn't tell you. During our interviewers, they put a lot of emphasis on the DAT scores and how there are several people in each class that had a 29AA or 30AA. The school is really aiming to be like Columbia. A lot of our professors also taught at columbia before transitioning here so their mindset is that the students need to have high scores. They are also increasing average class stats every year so that's why I think an 18AA may be a gamble. It's up to you to decide though.

Any insight for interview??

I'm interviewing at Touro on 12/19. I wish I could have come on 12/12 too but my Physics lab final is scheduled for that day and then doing another interview in Arizona on 12/13, so it just was not feasible to accommodate that date. :hungover:

That said, I booked a hotel room evening of 12/18 at the Westchester Marriott with 2 double beds, 2.9 miles (<10 min drive) from the school and would like to find a female who can split the room with me at 50%, which after tax is $58. They do have free parking there in case you are bringing a car. I'm willing to take even less if it helps financially - I was able to book my flight using miles saved up so my total expense isn't as bad as I anticipated.

On transportation, is anyone else landing in LaGuardia ~3:40pm on 12/18 and want to carpool to the Hawthorne area?
Same request returning to LGA after the 12/19 AM session? I looked up shuttle options but it seems to be outside the shared shuttle ride service area. I saw options to take the train there, but also realized the estimated timeframe will take 2.5-3 hours to get to my hotel and back to the airport, which I won't make if we finish around noon (flight departs at 3:30pm). We can either split the Lyft ride or I'll contribute a portion to your rental car fee. I'll even rent a car myself if I'm able to reduce the cost by sharing rides - I'm not afraid to drive anywhere, including in snow.

PM me if anyone is interested in the room or carpool. I'll take carpool requests from any gender but the room must be with a female only - I'm a married woman.

upload_2018-11-20_9-35-33.jpeg <-- Room I booked.

Does anyone know the statistics of this school like how many apply in total vs how many interviewed vs how many accepted in state vs out of state?

I'm interviewing Dec. 5th, but I received my interview invite away back in August.. they must've filled up super quickly. I didn't get the invite email I was scavenging through my aadsas portal and saw Invite for Interview and I was like whatttt? SO I went to my email and low and behold, it was there but I never got an email notice. In any case, I believe I'm the first interview group to interview post Dec 3rd, so I guess it's a good thing in the sense that I've got the first pickings AFTER all the Pre-december's have already decided to give up their spot or not. Buttttt I will be checking this website like God's work after my interview so pls drop a word as soon as you hear back from Touro.

Last year's thread said the post-dec. interviewee's heard back within less than 24 hours and I'm hoping its the same deal.

I applied to7 schools and only heard back from 2 so far - Touro and UB. UB I went to undergrad for. DAT score isn't the best but everything else is pretty much where it should be so... LET ME KNOW!

Good luck everyone, I interviewed 11/14, in state NY app, interview invitation on 7/27.

-23 AA/23 TS (21 Bio, 30 GC, 22 Orgo)/19 PAT/21 Reading/19 QR
-Undergrad: 3.4 GPA, 3.5 sGPA
-Grad: 3.6 GPA
-Institutional action, non academic disciplinary probation in 2012 for possession of cannabis, expunged in 2014 but still reported
-Then the normal research, dental shadowing, TAing, hospital volunteering, etc
