***The Official UNC SoD Class of 2020 Thread***

Just got invited for the October 10th interview!

Does anyone know if I can email those two forms back or must they be mailed or faxed?

Also what was the interview format? Individual or group? One interviewer or two or three? One interview session or more?

Congrats! When was your mail-out date? And are you IS or OOS?

You can email the forms. Interviews are one-on-one (2 open-file faculty and 1 closed-file student interview). Only 1 "session" but it takes the entire morning.

Very impressive! I submitted mine at similar time as you, but have not heard anything. I am in State. Does anyone know for October interview, OOS is still the majority?

How was the interview today? Are there more in state or OOS students?

Anyone know if UNC is still extending OOS pre-december interview invites?

The last UNC interview is in November. I don't know if invites are out yet but if not then there is still a chance.

EDIT: The last PRE-December is in November. There is also a last one in January.

Does anyone know for the in-state applicants who were invited for interview, what are the average DAT or GPA?

They don't publish info on average GPA or dat for those interviewed. Just those accepted. I know that my numbers were on the lower end of those interviewed for sure just by chatting w other people/friends/pre-dentistry club
Do you mind sharing what your gpa and dat score are? Trying to get a sense of what the "lower end" is. Thanks!

Does anyone know who is the director of the admission committee?

Thank you so much! I have not received interview from UNC or ECU. My application was completed in early July. I am worried something wrong with my application.

UNC sends Invites 3 weeks before the interview date. They use to have the interview date posted before they changed the website layout. We have one more week I believe.

did anyone ask how the decision process is for unc once you get an interview?

Decision process? You mean how does the school decide who they let in?

I know they give each interviewee an "interview score" based on their interview performance. Although the interviewees never get to see this score, I believe the school weighs it heavily: during my interview, a faculty member showed us a PowerPoint slide that showed the averaged GPA, DAT, Interview, etc. scores of matriculates for the Class of 2019 and the average interview score was ~8.9/9 (the scale runs 7-9, 7 being the lowest and 9 being the highest score).

I'm sure they're looking for well-rounded students in general, but it seems like the interview is very important to their admission decisions.

my gpa is slightly lower than their average but i feel like my interview went really really well, that's why i was asking

Well, this seems like a classic good news/bad news situation.

Good news: you got an interview early on in the process, so they don't consider your GPA a deal-breaker. They don't waste an interview on anyone they wouldn't admit on paper.

Bad news: nearly every interview goes really, really well - the average interview score is 8.9 out of 9. That means that the interview isn't really a chance to help your application, it's only an opportunity to hurt it.

So, good news, you likely didn't hurt your chances. Bad news, the interview probably doesn't really boost you that much either.

Which means it's just wait-and-see ... which is the hardest part.

I think you may have misunderstood my post: the average store of matriculates (aka those accept their admission offer) is 8.9/9, not the average score of all interviewees. I'm sure they hand out 7's and 8's to those who don't do as well.

I don't think the interview can only hurt you; quite the opposite, actually. But I'm sure it varies on a case-by-case basis.

So anxious for November interview invites.... any day now :nailbiting:

You guys…we're getting closer and closer 😱 ! Anytime this week if the calculations are correct! I have so much anxiety now that I need a good run haha

Do they send out interviews in batches?

No, I get that. The thing is, if all the matriculates interviews were virtually perfect, I doubt there's a super steep drop off to the rest of the interviews. So, if you interview well, you keep yourself in the mix that you were already in. That's what I mean by "the interview isn't really a chance to help your application, it's only an opportunity to hurt it." If you got an interview, they're at least prepared to admit you on paper. So, if you do well, you just kind of maintain your status quo. But if you screw up, you're in trouble.

By the time they get it down to roughly 320 applicants, pretty much everyone there could be a successful dental school student. One of the faculty said (unofficially) that they could probably throw all the interviewees' applications down a stairwell, pick up 82 at random, and have a fine class. So, whether they say it out loud or not, at the interviews they're looking for ways to shrink the list, not expand it.

So yes, a good interview helps in the sense that it keeps you in the game. But (and this is just my opinion) I don't think a superb interview moves you up the ranks, so to speak, so much as it holds you in place while other people might be sliding down.

I guess that's a pretty fine distinction to make, and doesn't change anything practically (a good interview is a good thing). It's just how I think of it.

I see what you're saying and that makes sense.

I do think that the interview can give some people an opportunity to showcase their unique qualities, but you're probably right: most applicants are probably good enough on paper to be students; the interview is more of a weeding out process it seems.

Also, congrats on the applicants to got November interviews! Good luck and have fun!

Does anyone know what is the style of the interview? 1 on 1, or MMI?

Are there ethical or scenarios based questions?

Just called admissions and they said e-mailing is fine. Just thought I'd update y'all.
Hi kholley 25,
Who did you email the forms to? UNC Admissions or the lady who sent you all the files? Thanks!

I didn't encounter any questions like that. My two faculty interviews were very conversational and casual - they asked me the general, "What are you doing currently?" "Why dentistry?" and "Why UNC?" which allowed me (in a way) to take charge of the flow of the interview. I really didn't ever feel pressed to figure something out or pressured to answer a question. They really just want to get to know your personality and where your interests in dentistry lie, IMO.

The student interview was even more casual - I was asked about my hand skills, hobbies, and what I did after undergrad. My student interview also asked me a "fun" question which helped calm the nerves.

Just checked - I e-mailed the document attachments to Carolyn Oakes. I simply replied to the interview information e-mail and later called to make sure they received it (UNC doesn't send you a confirmation e-mail unfortunately).
