***The Official Univ, of Maryland Class of 2017 Interview/Acceptance Thread***

Also, for those of you doing the video, are you going to make it silly and fun or sticking to professional? I'm leaning towards silly and fun but I don't want them to think I'm not taking it seriously!

Interview scheduled for November 7th! It was originally supposed to be the 20th but I had to reschedule. They had a couple days left in november for me to choose from.

Interview oct 30, anyone think hurricane sandy might cancel the interview day?

I don't think they will cancel the interview date. I'm interviewing on October 31st and am supposed to be traveling from NY on the 30th. I plan on calling them today to ask in case its as bad as they are predicting it will be, since apparently hurricane sandy and some storm from the midwest are supposed to both hit over NYC around the same time on Monday night- tues. Im just hoping that the weatherman is wrong lol

Ha same here, hoping that it won't be that bad

Scheduled for the 30th, seriously thinking about canceling my travel arrangements and calling the school to reschedule on Monday morning. Everything I can find about Sandy looks like it's going to be terrible for Baltimore, especially Tuesday. I don't know if I can afford to risk spending all the money and all the time to go out for the interview and end up stranded at the airport come Tuesday night, not even having gotten the chance to interview.

Then again, I know at this point my interview would almost 100% sure be post-December, and that hurts my soul. Maryland is such a great school and I felt so lucky to get an invite.

Going to check the projections tomorrow and decide from there. I'd need to cancel everything tomorrow to get refunds. I hate the weather.

Thanks Toofly01 🙂 I'm excited. My stats are average I think - 3.6 GPA/21AA. I was a part of 4th batch. I know I'll be impressed haha just hoping it's not too nerve-wracking!

Congrats to everyone who got early acceptances! I'm a D1 at Maryland so if you have any questions let me know!

👍 Congrats to all! I'm a recent grad, so if anyone has questions feel free to shoot me a PM.

Any advice you wish you had known or any good info about Baltimore or the school in general?

Accepted!!! So excited to get this email yesterday!

So I ran through some numbers real quick to see what our loan situation will look like. Using the tuition numbers here: http://www.fincsvc.umaryland.edu/sa/images/dds.pdf and the rent rates here: http://www.housing.umaryland.edu/fayette_square/rates_floorplans.html (I went with the 2 bedroom rate just to estimate).

I got the total loan to being $226,000 for all four years, or about $28,250 per semester. Putting this in to a loan calculator at a 7% aggregate rate paid over 15 years it would be a monthly payment of about $2000.

Much better than some numbers I ran previously for expensive private schools! I know just being accepted the last thing people want to think about is money but I thought some people would be interested in seeing some rough numbers. I'm pretty comfortable with them, completely affordable imo.

Just received my admission package in the mail, I still can't believe I got accepted. : ))))

You probably know all this already, but Baltimore is a rough town. The area the school is in isn't the greatest, but it is getting nicer every year. Regardless most students live within walking distance and never have any problems. Lots of good places to eat and drink in the city (which is probably all you'll have time for initially), but nothing else really as far as things to do. Almost everyone has a car... this city is not walking friendly. That's about it.

Could you tell me some of the popular housing options for the students (off-campus)? What apartments are especially popular among students?

Could you tell me some of the popular housing options for the students (off-campus)? What apartments are especially popular among students?

First year most of my class lived in Fayette Square (the university apartments), and by second year the majority of my class had migrated over to The Redwood apartments. Other popular walkable ones include The Zenith, Avalon Centerpoint, The Greenhouse, and Marlboro Classic / Redwood Square.

I don't know what price range you're looking in…all of those apartments listed are very close to campus and pretty nice, but pricey (~1400+/1BR, ~2200/2BR) and there isn't much to do in the immediate area. If you're willing to look a little farther from campus in the Federal Hill area (lots of bars, restaurants, young/fun area) you could try to find a few roommates and look into living in Baltimore's signature "row house". Most are 2 or 3 BR and it is within reason to find a place for $700 or a nice place for $800-900/person. Downside is obviously the distance from campus (1.5-2 miles), but there is a UMB shuttle that is free for students that will take you to campus.

On my interview day, it serioulsy irked me that the current students kept talking about how horrible and dangerous Baltimore is. I am a 5'5" 120 lb female who works about 2 blocks from campus, currently living in Federal Hill and walk 2 miles to and from work every single day. Do I carry one of those personal security alarm/soundmaker things with me? Of course. Do I feel like there's imminent danger lurking behind every corner or that I'm going to get shot walking around the city? Absolutely not. Police do a great job covering the area around the school and I feel pretty darn safe--especially on campus.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I know the city pretty well.

Quick question for those who have decided to attend: did any of you get a Certiphi email for a background check? I've heard many talking about it but I'm not sure if Maryland participates in it. I'm just afraid of missing anything!

Thanks and happy holidays!

I got one for UMDNJ, didn't get anything like that from Maryland.

Does anyone know when Maryland will send out the second round of offers?

I just received an interview for Jan 22. and I am completely stoked. I was wondering if the interview is intimidating or particularly different that other interviews people have attended. I know it's with a faculty member and a student, but I was curious if this made the interview tougher. I was also wondering if an interview is generally a good indication of acceptance. For example, is it like Tufts, where once you receive an invite to interview you have a good shot at getting in, or is it most likely for a wait-list spot? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

are most applicants scheduled for post-december interviews vying for spots in the waitlist?

Yes, I believe they are continually interviewing for another two months because a D3 student was there who had interviewed in March. Dr. Meehan also said more acceptances will be given out after April 1, when the second deposits are due and people decide not to attend umb. She emphasized it was ongoing and there will be another round of acceptances/interviews sometime before April

I thought my interviewers were nice but I think my nyu interview went much much better. Also, a few people did get a Prof that railed off 20+ questions to them. Mine was relaxed. They've got a packet they write in and it has about six questions in it; to find the questions you should sift through the forums (or PM me and I will let you know what I was asked and what I found online). obviously the Prof asking twenty plus questions made quite a few up.

Hi guys. I'm new to this forum but have been following closely for a while. I had interview with Univ of MD on December 11th. The dean stated that we would be the last batch of students to interview in December. Someone asked the dean when we should be hearing from the school as far as acceptances. He gave a vague response and said that this is a "dynamic" process and we should hear from the school after the holidays. Now, I'm thinking after New Years. Time passes by and no news. i searched the SDN site and found that in the previous years, the second round of acceptance offers were sent around 1/10th. But 1/10 came and went and still no news. I got antsy and nervous, so I called the office of admissions on the 11th to ask if the second round of acceptance went out already. She said "No" and did not give me the date when I asked.

It is now 1/16 and there is still no answer...I guess what I want to ask you guys is aside from the group who received acceptances in beginning of Dec (Dec 3rd i think), is there anyone who received an acceptance from Dec until now? Any response or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

UMB is notorious known for putting million people on waiting-list. I am a D3 student here at UMB. Ask any questions you have?

From what I heard UMB=Tufts in most aspects.

I got accepted to UMD on 3 Dec and received the HPSP scholarship about two weeks later and I was wondering if anyone else is doing the same thing?
