The Under 3.0 Club part 02

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello! My name is Lauren and I've been a hygienist for the past 7 years. I obtained my anesthesia license, and I am enroleld to become EFDA certified over the summer. I've always wanted to be a dentist, but the timing was never right. I enrolled back into a university and I have one year left of undergrad. My current GPA is 3.0 and im taking my DAT in May. Any suggestions? I just feel like schools are so "number oriented" and they dont even give you an opportunity to explain yourself. I was 17 when i was accepted into dental hygiene school and 19 when I graduated. The last thing on my mind was GPA, and now its haunting my life!!!!!

PLEASE HELP!😕:scared:🙁

If you have good DAT Scores you might have a chance but try to get gpa over 3.0 and don't forget that you current gpa will be added to your old den hyg gpa and a new gpa will be calculated 🙂 btw you are so right, schools do care mostly numbers..I am applying for third time and they don't care how experienced you are. Good luck

Hi SDN members,

I was wondering what my chances were to get into dental school this year. This is my second time applying. Last year my science GPA was under a 3.0 and my DAT scores were under what they needed to be.

This year my gpa is
Science GPA 3.10
BCP GPA 3.09
Non-Science 3.43
Total GPA 3.21

I also retook my DATs and recieved
PAT:19
Reading: 19
QR: 20
Biology:17🙁
GC: 20
OC: 20
AA: 19
TS: 19

I am currently a Post Bach student and have 100+ hours of shadowing and approximatly 400+ hours of volunteering/community service associated with my extracurriculars while working two part time jobs.

I have applied to the following school:
OHSU Midwestern
Baylor
University of Louisville
University of Minnesota
University of Missouri (Rejection letter through snail mail in October)
University of Pittsburgh
University of Texas
Virginia Commonwealth

I am just wondering what my chances are since I have not recieved any interviews or rejections (except for Missouri). Any advice would be great.🙂

AA 19 is pretty good but not good enough with your GPA, 17 in Bio might be an issue too, I would suggest to apply to more schools but it might be late now though

Just wanted to say good luck to everyone and hope for nothing but the best for each of you.

What a disaster this has turned out to be. Congratulations to everyone having a great day if you got good news and for those of us on the flip side of that coin...good luck in your future endeavors whatever that may be.

First post here, I'm teetering at the 3.0 line from previous college, but came to a 4-yr institution and have made 3.7 for my first summer semester (9 cr), and headed for possibly a 3.8-4.0 for this fall (17cr), all sGPA.. I have volunteered/shadowed over 150+ hours within the past 7 months, with most of it during the summer.

I have been studying my butt off for DAT by reviewing all of Chad's videos for genchem and ochem, I feel confident about biology section. I've also reviewed the Kaplan book, but haven't began taking practice tests yet. I will start it when I finish the ochem sections.

My DAT date is 1.9.2013..

With a 2.97 GPA from previous institution with 1 F in Linear Algebra, I've picked up my slack in the past 1.5 years, but will dental schools look at my improvements or my shortcomings?

I am also very late in the cycle to apply, and will be applying to only few schools that have their deadline past January.

What are my chances?
Even if I destroy the DAT, could all slots be filled, and I'm SOL? 🙁

I'm at a "do-or-die" situation, because I clearly realize that I am not getting any younger (25), and I absolutely do not want to take a gap-year.
I've made a lot of excuses prior to getting my head straight and I am doing whatever I can to get in to (any!) dental school!

Take the dat first, see how you do. Then worry bout applying

I was going to send my apps in before taking the DAT... not a good idea?

Don't waste your money on this cycle. Its already way too late. The fact is there are applicants that applied late (sep~ November) and some of their apps hasnt been reviewed. btw Im 26 and I see where you are coming from, but you probably don't want to waste money on a app that has 0 chance. Just be patient, gather good LOR, rock your DAT, have solid PS ready and apply first batch. BTW average age for entering class is 24.

There's always a chance! I got into UMich a couple days ago
Only interviewed at UMich, and Roseman
Rejected from a good amount of schools 😛

Stats:
DAT 22/21/21 AA,TS,PAT
Evaluated with a
oGPA 3.09
sGPA 2.76
BCP 2.66

Accepted and now my Academic Update (which doesn't mean anything anymore)
oGPA 3.12
sGPA 2.80
BCP 2.78

GOOD LUCK YA'll!!!

I just got in with lower s/gpa and 19/18 dat. If you have good service and ecs, you have a decent chance. It really depends if you want to take the dat again and only if you know you can put in the time to improve. I would apply as is, maybe add some dental related service and if you don't make it retake next year.

Thank you. I am still waiting to here anything from 9 schools since I turned in my applications at the end of August, so hopefully I will hear something soon.

I'll repeat what I wrote in the UMDNJ thread:

For those applying or waiting to hear back from schools...

Unfortunately, some people on this forum can be quite cruel and will often discourage you, which is why I am posting my stats and I'll leave you with some food for thought.

Total GPA: 3.02
BCP GPA: 2.86
Science: 2.83
Non Science: 3.23

DAT:

AA - 20
TS - 20
PAT - 17
QR - 17
RC - 23
Bio - 20
Chem - 20
Orgo - 20

Interviews: UMDNJ and Howard and Tufts Spring interview which I declined.

Acceptances: UMDNJ and Howard.

Age: 30
Degree: B.A. in Public Administration
Professional Experience: 10 years
Shadowing Experience: 275+ hours
Volunteering Experience: 150+ hours
Research Experience: 80 hours

Trust me, I have had a very rough past, but you must be resilient! Here's my food for thought for those that have ever felt discouraged:

"Unless someone can look into the core of your heart, and see the degree of your passion, or look into the depths of your soul and see the extent of your will, then THEY HAVE NO BUSINESS TELLING YOU WHAT YOU CAN OR CANNOT ACHIEVE! Because while they may know the odds, THEY DO NOT KNOW YOU. Nor do they know the power of your angels." - Sandra Kring

Any questions? Feel free to PM me!

What's your residency, and what batch were you in? You might have had a better chance if you submitted early. I have almost identical GPAs as you, though my DAT averages were 22/21. However, my DAT was apparently not enough to redeem myself to get a bunch of interviews like others on here. I ended up with 1 interview (and 1 acceptance). Keep on taking a full load of classes at your post-bac and get those 4.0's, and you might be able keep your current DAT score. It also wouldn't hurt to retake the DAT AND get 4.0's lol. You just never know these days with ds admissions getting progressively harder each year. GOOD LUCK!

Did you go to umich for undergrad? I'm an undergrad there now and have a similar GPA (3.4 overall, 2.9 science) but haven't taken the DAT. I will apply for 2018 but I'm pretty discouraged. My mom and 2 siblings have gone to Michigan Dental School. Do you think I still have a chance?

I am a CA resident, and I have no family members that graduated from UMich. HAHHA so your chances are 1000000x better than mine 🙂 👍👍👍👍

I graduated with an overall gpa 2.9, science gpa 2.6
After 1 year of biology graduate post-bac, raised my grades to overall gpa 3.0, science gpa 2.7 (post-bac grad is a 3.7)...by the end of the semester, my overall gpa should be a 3.1 , science gpa 2.8...
I have an upward trend, getting above 3.5 every semester for the past 2 years.

Took the DAT 3 times
1st - AA 16, TS 17, PAT 18
2nd - AA 18, TS 17, PAT 18
3rd - AA 20, TS 19, PAT 19

I applied to 14 schools (my state school and schools with low gpa and out of state seats). I have a lot of dental experience, president of clubs, and have a pretty good ps. What do you guys think?

Here is a question to those of you who had interviews and were accepted with a low GPA:

Did your interviewer express concern over your GPA and thus your ability to succeed in dental school?

I graduated with a 3.2 oGPA and 2.9 sGPA and 2.87 BCP. Had an interview today and was asked that question. I gave a response, but I'm just wondering what others have said to this, because I feel that my response wasn't sufficiently strong.

So I'm wondering for future interviews, if I wind up going to any..

They did not mention at at my Roseman Interview. And at UMich, its a set of predetermined scenarios so you wont be asked about your GPA. Those are the only interviews I had. GOOD luck

It is possible my GPA was not low enough, but my oGPA was about 3.35 and before my post-bacc it was 3.1, but only one school that interviewed me asked about my gpa. To that school I responded that I need a goal to work towards in life, and that without a goal that required a high GPA, I didn't have any motivation to do anything besides pass classes. Once I had my sights set on dentistry, I had a new GPA that they should consider...blah blah blah. I got an acceptance from that school.

Hmm.. okay. Because I replied that my study habits were not too solid when I was in undergrad, but I have improved upon them considerably since then, as is evident by my graduate GPA and my DAT scores.

Without knowing your numbers, that sounds like a solid response to me👍.

Undergrad GPA was a 3.2 and grad GPA was a 3.7, 21AA on DAT with a 21GC and 20OC. GC and OC brought my undergrad GPA down considerably because I was consistently getting C's.

Clearly I've improved something to do that much better.

oGPA 3.2, sGPA 3.08, 21AA/22TS. Got 2 pre-dec interviews and got accepted to both. I had been on this forum for a while and got a lot of help from others so I hope by posting my stats it can help some people w/ low GPA. I know how difficult it is to raise GPA and it takes a lot of work and struggling but there's still hope just don't give up if you really love dentistry :]

Hey guys this is current situation I'm in right now. Can can anyone help me?

Right now Im in my 2nd semester of my Junior year. I still have not taken DAT yet.

My GPA is

Accumulative: 2.80

Biology: 1.7 (Yes Its Bad..)

I have Failed 2 Biology Classes and 1 Physic Class.

I want to know if I should keep my major as pre dental or change it to something else.

I was kind of in the same situation with chemistry and biology, but did a bit better when I retook them. At that time though, I was married (still are), 36 year old, with one kid, and working part time. Oh, did I mention that English is not my first language 😉
Believe me, if I could do it anyone can!! Just a thought.

I knew that I really really wanted dentistry as a career, and decided to sacrifice that much!
I hope this helped.

You can definitely improve your GPA, it just may take some time. It doesn't need to be stellar. There are other things that make a great applicant. I was able to recover from a 0.46 overall GPA so I know you can do it! Took a lot of A's but do-able. At first I did not know I would be going into dentistry so I did my B.A. in Public Administration which is similar to Business but for the public sector. It was a relatively easy degree since I had business experience. I decided to pursue dentistry after I graduated. I was 26 when I took the leap. I took all of my Biology, Chem and Physics and did great! After 25, studying was no longer a drag and tests became easier for me. Less pressure, more experience, I don't know? I ended up applying with a 3.0 overall and a science of 2.8. Not bad considering what I had to improve from. Changing your major is up to you. You don't NEED to be pre-dental or biology etc. Just do what you're best at, that is somewhat relatable and continue taking your pre-reqs for dental school. Oh, and I received acceptances to two schools. 🙂 so just keep working at it!

Here is a question I have for the following year. I am planning on taking Biochem I and II but I won't be able to take them until the following Fall/Spring year.

How do dental schools that require these classes handle this as part of the application process? One school I have been thinking about is Howard which requires Biochemistry and Anatomy (missing 9 credits total here in these two)

Raised my GPA from 2.97 to a 3.14 these past two sem. by getting an overall 3.94 sGPA in upper level classes at my current university.

1/9/13, wish me luck!!

Lol all of you complaining about your age need to stfu and gtfo because there are 30 and 40 some year olds still fighting for it.

So here are my stats, I am pretty sure I have one of the worst in this thread. Ive already applied to University of Illinois at Chicago, New York University, Southern Illinois University, Marquette, Midwestern (rejected).
BCP - 2.32
Science - 2.32
Non Science - 3.08
Overall - 2.62

DAT Breakdown
AA - 19
TS - 18
PAT - 22

Now im just hoping my DAT score, shadowing/volunteering hours, and letters of recommendation can save me from my horrible gpa. I posted my stats on another thread and was told I have basically zero chance of getting atleast an interview. Perhaps doing post bacc? My actual university gpa is higher than the AADSAS gpa because i retook 2 courses and got a chance for a gpa recalculation. Even so, my actual overall university gpa is 2.76. I doubt thats even the bare minimum for applying to graduate school for masters in public health.

You are honestly being too hopeful. Your DAT is average of people that get in. Average DAT being 19 and average GPA being around 3.5, you should expect that's what it takes to get in. If your GPA is on the lower side, it makes sense that you need a high DAT. Sorry, but your DAT won't save you. Your university GPA doesnt mean anything b/c AADSAS doesn't do grade replacement. You are going to need to do 2 yeas of full time postbac, and have 4.0 or near, no less than 3.7 each class, so you can bring your BCP and sGPA to 3.0.

Hey everyone! I'm new to this thread and I was wondering what schools you are all applying/intending to apply to.

Here are my numbers:
BCP: 2.804

I've looked at the excel documents posted by doc toothache and made a short list of schools where my stats might fit in. But the list is short and my GPA is on the lower end of the range. So I was wondering, which schools would you recommend? I am a California resident and applying next cycle. I also have plenty of shadowing and community service done. I'm looking for some realistic advice. Thanks in advance!

Raised my GPA from 2.97 to a 3.14 these past two sem. by getting an overall 3.94 sGPA in upper level classes at my current university.

1/9/13, wish me luck!!
Good job on the improvement. I wouldn't waste money applying this cycle. Your apps won't be reviewed until february?. Most schools even with late deadline will have most seats filled up. I don't think it's worth it. Save some money, raise your gpa through spring and apply early.

As long as you have those two courses as planned and you will be finishing them before you matriculate, you will be ok.
