The Under 3.0 Club part 02

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wow...how necessary was this comment?

The guy was just making a joke. It's amazing the guy landed an interview the GPA and DAT scores he has (kudos btw). No need to grill someone for being light hearted.

So Ive posted my story couple times. Pretty much sub3.0 that i retook classes+took new classes such as anatomy, biochem , cell bio , physio and was able to raise up to 3.0 ( so far postbacn gpa is 3.8)
I'm taking three classes so far but i am doing terrible in all three.
One class is pretty much mix of anatomy+physio+cell bio+ pathology and its really killing me , did average on midterm which dropped from A to a B.
For the other class, I did way worse on my midterm than I expected.
I pretty much "could try" to receive a A- for both (need to ace rest of quizzes and final) but 1) I don't know at this point if I am capable of and being a sub 3.0 and needing only good grades, I don't know if I should take the risk. 2) I've lost motivation and got depressed b/c yeah I did try on my part but I guess I'm being an inefficient student, and to try a new study method at this point is sort of risky.

Leaving the point that dental school is way harder. At this point I could think of 3 options :
a) suck it up and try to get a A in all three classes, which if I dont get As my gpa would drop and damage to the uptrend.
b) Drop 1~2 classes, increase working hours
c) Drop 1~2 classes, and study for the DAT for the next 2 months.
I'm thinking of keeping biochem, but I'm not sure about the other two. BTW, there won't be a record of W in the transcript. No penalty at this point. What would you guys do if you were in my situation?

Thank you for your time

I think that option C is your best bet. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses. If you drop the class and study for DAT at least you are putting your time into something that is productive. I think that it will be hard to randomly have a turn around and raise your grades on a dime so why not study hard for DAT?? Good luck I hope everything goes well, and remember this is just MY opinion do what you think is right!

do you guys know the story about Yah-E, the guy who started this thread?

he got into a 6-year MD oral surgery program. After he failed Step I for the 3rd time they booted him out of the program.

he was one of the most annoying dental posters back in my day. if you dared challenge him on any issue he'd say something like: "listen, i'm older than you, and i've been in dental school longer, you should shut up and listen to your elders." 🙄

Hey guys, just wanted to check and see if any one in the "under 3.0 club" receive any interviews yet. I haven't really heard anything too positive yet myself, just playing the waiting game...

Hey everyone these are my stats. I started awefull my first two years of undergrad (lack of maturity and didnt know what I wanted to be). My third year I decided I wanted to become a dentist since I was always into art and helping others (being born in the Philippines in a rural area makes you wanna help everyone lol). I graduated with Molecular and Cellular Biology degree with a Minor in Business Administration from the University of Arizona.

GPA:
First Year- 2.31
Second Year- 2.22
Third Year - 3.55
Fourth Year - 3.35

GPA Overall:
2.92 cu, 2.73 sci, 2.84 bcp, 3.23 non-science

I took more upper division science classes my third and fourth year and aced them, but basically got all C's my first two years with the basic requirement classes (Bio, Gen, OChem, etc).

I applied to this cycle without taking the DAT, I was hoping if I aced it I would have chances for interviews. I was getting 21AA, 21TS on Topscore but I ran out of time on my Actual DAT!!! I swear I left atleast 2Bio Problems, 3GenChem Problems, 4Ochem Problems, and 4 RC/QR problems not even answered!! 😡

AADSAS Applied Late July 2011, Took DAT in late August 2011:

Bio- 20 PAT- 19
GC- 18 RC - 16
OC -18 QR - 18

AA 18, TS 19, PAT 19

Two Science Professors (Research Professor, and Cell Bio Professor) LOR, General Dentist LOR, Regional Arizona Oral Health Coordinator LOR

I have 173 Shadowing Hours (General 144hrs, Endo, Ortho, Perio, Dental Lab)

I have 713 (Recorded) Community Service Hours: (like I said, I like to help people lol)

-I've helped rural areas in the Dominican Republic and Haiti after the earthquake
-Treasurer of UNICEF at the University of Arizona
-Pre-Dental Club member for two-plus-years now (still active)
-144hrs in a Community Health Center for the Regional Oral Health Coordinator
-Worked in many Rural Communities outside of my community
-Arizona Club Golf Member (AllState Golf League Champion)
-Many More I cant think of, I put on AADSAS though

I have 520 Research Hours for the Arizona Cancer Center (Basically a year and a half doing research on cancer cell lines)

I worked almost full time 25-30hrs a week at the same restaurant for three years now....5100 Working Experience Hours....my first year of college was in a law firm (never wanted to even think about being a lawyer after that job lol)

So since I applied for this cycle 2011-2012, I can only hope for one interview (applied to many schools). However, I am taking more classes this spring to raise my GPA and also going to Honduras in March 2012 for a week to help give free access to healthcare. I am planning to raise my GPA to 3.01, Science 2.92, BCP 3.05 after taking/acing 14units this Spring. What do I need to do to improve my application? What DAT scores do I need with that GPA? Should I apply again in June for 2012-2013 cycle or go straight to the Masters Program in Midwestern? Any response will help!!! Thank you SDN!!!

I ordered the SDN dental book and they say the lower the gpa the higher the DAT required. in the book it said sub 3.0 to try and get a 22 AA or 21+. Taking class will help, I'm in the same boat trying to get in now! I would definitely re-take the DAT and shoot to not get below an 18 in any section and keep the numbers high as you can. gluck!

Thanks! I am retaking the DAT in May...I'll have a whole semester to study for it while I take some classes. I hope I can get that 21AA, Good Luck on your interviews!

2nd Interview!!!!!!!
University of Louisville , I have a 3.01 GPA and 17 AA PA 17 ( 21RC 16 Bio 16 OC 16 GC 15 QR)

Involved in numerous ECs as an undergraduate. 200 + Hrs. Volunteering. I have 0 hours shadowing. Lined up several Dentist in my area to shadow in 2012. Contemplating applying this next cycle. Meeting with the Universities pre-professional committee to discuss what is needed starting next semester. If all goes well, will sign up to take the REAL DAT. Spoke with the director of admissions for the new dental school at ECU. Seems optimistic.

Non-Traditional Student:
Age: 28

Mechanical Engineer - 40 Hrs/Week

I keep telling myself - "If it's not worth having, It's not worth doing"

I have 2 more semesters before I finish this program for the Post Bacc, unless I do apply in June and something positive comes from that.

Really enjoy reading the post from all of the Sub - 3.0 members out there. Checked out the www.predents.com website, it is very informative with dental hopefuls who have applied and what everyone's respective GPAs are. Gives hope, only 3% or so of the applicants on that website are made up of < 3.0. There are quite a few who have been accepted over the years. A lot of their stories also hinge on having Post - Bacc classes and HIGH DAT scores. Wish everyone the best of luck moving forward.

Hey everyone, how long did it take to get an interview after sending in your application? Its been about 8 weeks now since its been titled as "under review". Should I call the schools to see whats the status?

And is it better to have the schools hold to your application for a longer time or vice versa?

No , my grades got better from my first year.
thats awesome! congrats, I have similar stat, perhaps they like the fact that ur grades got better, what else do you think made you stand out? I am taking some postbacc classes at the moment.

Not really sure ! I also played 2 sports in college and i am in the national guard but other then that I am a below average joe ; )

Just got my 4th interview - Indiana University! Not a URM either, and theres hope for all of us!

Hi everyone. this is my first post on sdn but i saw this thread and i decided i should post here, maybe for some advice and or feedback or just to share my story.
i applied last year after i graduated, i had no clue what i was doing. i had never calculated my science gpa or anything. bad move.

to the point--when i graduated i had a 2.4 bcp without +/- . yes thats right i said a 2.4. needless to say i was rejected from everywhere i had applied despite that i had a 20aa/20ts on my DAT. i quickly realized i looked like an idiot for applying with such a low GPA. i was a biology major in UG however i hadnt taken many upper level biology courses - i had taken courses like a&p1 +2, genetics, etc. once i realized my gpa was a gigantic problem, i began my postbacc.

for the past year i've taken courses like immunology, pathology, histology, embryology, pharmacology, neurobiology, etc etc. as many upper level bio's as i could find. i have completed 50 credits of postbacc so far, with a straight 4.0. i have raised my bcp and science gpa to a 3.1 w/out +/- (and with +/- is about a point higher) , in 3 semesters. I plan to reapply this upcoming cycle (summer 2012) and i have retaken my DAT and recieved a 23aa and 22 ts.
i have countless shadowing hours, and numerous volunteering hours.

do you think i have a shot for this coming cycle? also, i will be taking 14 more credits this spring semester. Please, any advice would be great!

thanks so much, you all motivate me !!

Hi fellow Dental school hopefuls!

Update from this past semester (original post in the "Where Should I app") thread.
Cut and pasted from there:

oGPA-2.65 (actualy was 2.62)
sGPA-2.5
EC-tutoring, public readings, reserve, and school committees
shadowing-doing so currently and will continue

Senior-staying for extra semester or year so 1.5-2 years left
If straights As for remainder (taking more science than anything)
oGPA-3.15-3.25
sGPA-3.29-3.4

Problem grades
Phys II-F
Genetics-C
Ochem I-C+
2 Cs and 2 Ds in nonscience classes
(Actual one D was in linear algebra)

Now:

FA 2011:
Biochem I (4 units): B
Thermo (4 units): B
Reading Fiction (4 units): B+
Experimental Bio Lab (6 units): A
GPA: 3.3

oGPA:2.8
sGPA:2.83

ECs- founder/president of predental club (yeah i know), currently doing research in lab, leadership in a different club, tutor, shadowing +

Although I didn't get straight A's, I'm super happy with my grades considering the transition I made that semester.

Plans for future:

SP 2012:
Biochem II (4 units)
Cell Bio I (4 units)
Molecular Bio I (4 units)
Social Psych (4 units)
Bio Lab (2-4 units) or pay
Total: 16-20 units

Summer 2012
two part-time jobs + volunteering/shadowing

FA 2012:
Orgo II (4 units) (Been a long time since I took Orgo I, so I might retake it over the summer or review it)
Bio Lab (10 units)
Bio Lab TA (7 units)
(Another Bio Lab (1-2 credits))
Total: 22-23 units

SP 2013:
Immunology (4 units)
Cognitive Processes (4 units)
Inorganic chem (4 units) MAYBE
other bio class (4 units)
Bio Lab (2-4 units) or pay
Total: 16-20 units

potential GPA
oGPA:3.25
sGPA:3.38
BCP: 3.45 🙂

I know they all sound like a lot of credits per semester, but the majority of the Bio labs are undergrad research done for credit, since I need the grade more than the money (though some may be done for pay instead ins last semester). I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do after I graduate, because I'm becoming more interested in research than I thought I would and may decide to do a 2 yr M.S. w/ thesis before applying and I want to keep my head in the now since I have an interesting year and a half ahead.

anyone hear from any interview invites recently?

still nothing from me, not a single interview 🙁

My stats are 3.3 overall GPA, 3.1 Science Gpa ( 🙁 they took out my research units and it turned out to be lower (on my transcript it says 3.2) lol ), 3.9 Non Science GPA (too bad they don't care about this one)

Dat: PAT 20
BIO-19, GCHEM - 17 (YIKES), OCHEM - 21, RC - 20, QR -18, AA-19

DREAMS ARE ACHIEVABLE PEOPLE!

When I graduated with my BS back in 2008, my GPAs were below 3.0. and I hadnt taken the DAT. I had a miserable run during my undergrad, most of it due to working multiple jobs and over committing to several extra curricular volunteer work and stuff.

However, after lots of hard work, SFSU Health Professions Post-Bacc programs, 3 cycles of applications, over $50,000 extra in student loan costs, 4 years of my life, energy, sweat, tears, sacrifices....... I was finally succesful this year.

Dont give up people! If you want it, and you are passionate about dentistry, then you can make it happen.

Please feel free to ask questions if you need some guidance, but please be patient as it may take me some time to respond. I want to help motivate people as I was motivated all of these years by others.

aw congrats! i'm happy for you! where did you get in, if you don't mind me asking?

my overall GPA is currently 2.76 and my science is probably significantly lower. the thing is, i have several F's on my transcript that were not earned, i just failed to drop them during the semesters i was going through family issues and i'm not sure how to explain those without calculating them into my science GPA first. My DATs however are 23 straight through. what should i do??

you should try and find a way to alert schools about your dilemma and explain the situation talk with some dental school administrators.

Sign up for a 1 year masters and get A's! Thats the best thing to do at this point - I had a 22 AA 21TS 24PAT - and 2.86 sgpa with a 3.12 ogpa (before academic update ) - than I got it to a 3.0 and 3.2......all in all I have 4 interviews and 1 acceptance (only went to 1 interview thus far, withdrew from 2)

Thanks for the advice, katwoman! The thing is, I don't think I can get into a masters program with my grades 🙁 i'm thinking I should just keep taking undergrad upper level bio courses at my university and get my GPA to a 3.0 and then apply because my DATs are pretty good. What do you think?? I will also have excellent recommendations from the dentists I work for (been working as an assistant for almost 2 years now!)

My gpa is below 3.0 at about 2.7. Everyone I have spoken with has said to do some post bacc work. I was wondering what masters programs I should look into or if I should take random classes to boost up my gpa.

Could you be more specific on what you did during those 3 cycles, which classes you took and how much did your GPA improved or had during postbac? So people could use it as guide. Thanks.

Science gpa: 3.02
BCP: 3.02
Overal: 3.35
DAT: 20/20/18
Applied to 15 schools

I started a SMP this year, but was fortunate enough to be granted a pre-december interview this cycle. This was my first time applying and I was accepted on December 1st. Since then, I have been invited to a few other schools. Just wanted to share with you that if you put in the time and effort, good things will happen. Good luck to everyone!

I have no hope at this point, but will highlight my situation.

I will be graduating with:
oGPA: 2.8
sGPA: 2.2
DAT: 17
Registered RDA
RDA hours worked: approx 100+
Shadowing hours: 400+

I was going to apply for a post-bacc program, but feel it would be better to go back and re-take a year of pre-reqs and advanced level bio courses to boost my GPA (s3.0 o3.4). It would be 4 science classes a semester, but I have all the time in the world to fulfill this dream and am now willing to do just about anything to achieve it.

I am assuming as I retake these courses my DAT will increase as I just flat out didn't know how to do a lot of the material.

What do you guys think? Is it still possible for someone like me to get in after 2 years of hard work? I was thinking after the 1 extra yr of college I would apply to both dental school and post bacc programs simultaneously.

🙁 My name says it all.

You need to do a masters program. Whether that's a special masters program or something at your school right now. You're not going to raise that GPA to anything respectable in 2 years and it would be a waste of time to retake every prereq. Enroll in the masters, do well, retake DAT while studying for it like you're life depended on succeeding. It's possible, you just need time + effort.

i'm in a similar situation except my DAT is 23. I was thinking of just taking upper level science courses because at this point with our GPAs, no masters program will accept us. i've already exceeded the repeat limit for my university so i think i'm going to take some courses at community college and from reading other threads on SDN, some dental schools will take credits from community college, you just have to look up which ones and contact them individually. it's a tough process 🙁

Do you guys know which masters programs are recommended for dental school if you were to apply to one? My gpa is around a 2.6 and I'm looking for a way to improve it, so I was wondering whats the best way to do so.

Do you have any recommendations? I'm pretty ignorant about masters programs as I didn't think I would be put in this situation. Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated. BTW thanks for your all your help.

Hello, I didn't see this thread before I made my own but any advice is appreciated. 🙂:scared:

I would like to get into U of Mich or Detroit Mercy one day (preferably 2013)
I have recently graduated (Dec 2011) with a bachelors in psychology and a minor in biology. Cum. GPA was a 2.94 (I know, bad, but mostly made up of B's, which I think accounts for some of the low GPA). Right now I am taking biochemistry, human physiology and a biology seminar (level 497). This Fall I hope to participate in some sort of post bacc program (like wayne state university BMS) to raise my GPA. I took the DAT this past summer without studying much and a got a 16 (WILL be retaking in april or may after more thorough preparation.) I have shadowed dentists and done volunteering at free clinics around the area (not particularly dental related, more med). I also believe I can get strong letters of rec ( a few of them, one from the pre-health advisor at my school also perhaps). I am just really looking for some advice, I am from Michigan so I would like to stay in state, this is why I am looking for how I could improve myself to eventually get accepted into this program. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you in advance (I know my stats are not great, I am not stupid, that is why I am asking HOW I can improve myself). 🙂

I am not sure if I should apply this cycle or not? I am a junior, I transfered from a community college did 2 years there and graduated with a 3.3 gpa from there and when I transfered to a University my gpa went down horribly and I havent been able to pull it up so right now I have a 2.8 gpa. I have a lot of community service hours with different dentists and I attended SMDEP in Seattle last summer, I know that if I attended SMDEP I get some interviews right away in some schools, and I have to take the DAT. My hope is to get good grades this semester and take summer A a lot of classes so that I could pull my gpa a little more and apply. However, I am not sure right now because everyone is telling me that with a 2.8 gpa I wont get in. My other option will be to wait until I graduate next spring and keep working on my GPA and maybe take some extra science classes and apply next year but what will I do after I graduate during the rest of that year?

Please help me! thank you so much!!!

Yah- E

Thank you for creating this club !
Do you have time to read my statement ?

Thanks and regards,

I just got an acceptance from Tufts Dental School yesterday! My stats are:

oGPA: 3.00 (upward trend, barely made it to 3.00 worked my ass off my senior year, sophmore year I had a 2.4)
sGPA: 2.89
BCP GPA: 2.90
DAT: 23AA/21TS/22PAT

I was really discouraged at first not only because of my reaaally low GPA but also because I ended up applying late (September) due to a Letter of Recommendation that took forever. Anyway I just want to encourage everyone to keep at it! Good luck to all, and if Dentistry is your dream, you'll get there!!! 🙂

Hey fellow former slackers,

So I figured I should let you know where I'm at. On Friday I interviewed at Western. It's an awesome school and it felt like it went well. On March 12th I will interview at NYU. Since I assume some of you will ask, here are my stats

cGPA: 2.94
sGPA: 3.68
bcpGPA: 3.70

AA: 20
TS: 19
PAT: 22

military
lots of volunteer (some dental related)
100+ hours of shadowing

So that's were I'm at. Good luck to all of you!

P.S. Congrats ALffreyDO!!!!!

@gsxra4b6 Thanks!

@Tirekicker, Thanks so much! Congrats on the interviews and good luck to you! 🙂

@lovesmile, Not sure if you were talking to me, but if you were, no I'm not an under served applicant

Would taking 4-5 science classes at CC to boost my sgpa be a bad idea or look bad to adcom even if I am currently attending a 4yr college? For those of you who have taken science classes at cc please provide your input and was that brought up at interviews?

I'm just finishing up my second year of undergrad...but am determined to go into dentistry. After looking for a while to calculate your GPA I can't seem to find one specific way to do it (I know different schools have different ways of calculating it). My university only gives out percents and letter grads so I was wondering if anyone was in the same boat as me...how do you have an idea of where your GPA is at before you actually submit your marks? Thanks!
