The Under M1 Club, Part II - COME ON IN!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UICpremed-Office Space rocks! I just watched it again last weekend with my friend who has a boss with pretty much the same personality as Lumbergh-had to cheer her up seeing as she'd never seen it before😀

Ugh, yes I had a case of the Mondays. Now I have a case of "just regurgitated everything out of my brain for anatomy exam Tuesday mornings". I studied and studied and studied for this and now that it's over I'm just kind of blah.....don't really want to deal with Chem lab this afternoon but oh well...I feel pretty good about the exam tho, it seemed relatively easy. He's posting the answer key up in five minutes so I've gotta go back up there and see how I did so I can just put it behind me and get back to concentrating on my other subjects. Other than that, nothing much else is new....

Biodude-keep up the HOAG "diary"! It's so interesting to read for those of us who haven't been able to get clinical experience yet despite repeated tries (darn HIPAA!😡 ) I'm glad you had a good shift...

minx-nice to hear from you again. Is the topic for a personal statement kind of essay on your transfer app?

It's only three weeks into the school year and already I'm starting to get the sleepies in class!!🙁

helllllllllp

All,

Just want to say GOod Luck everyone in whatever you do.
I guess I will see you after the end of the quarter! (If I am still breathing)

😍

Hey all! 🙂

Just got back from my physics exam. It was easy and I think went well, except that I totally messed up one of the multiple part questions which unfortunately is worth major points. Our exam was 10 MC "concept" questions at 3 pts each, 4 one-step problems at 20 pts each, and 2 multi-part problems at 50 pts each!!😱 for a total of 210 pts. Maybe he'll give me a couple points for the last problem for simply finding the distance of something, but I found the distance assuming a horizontal path vs an angled path so I'll be lucky to get a B on this one. Oh well...at least our homework is 10% of our grade in there lol.

I ended up not arguing that one question in orgo because I was one of only a couple to assume that looking along a bond meant the same thing as looking down a bond...it really wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway. I'll just have to rock the next one.

Other than that I've pretty much blown everything else off the first couple days of this week in order to study for the physics exam so I need to write my lab writeups tonite and do a orgo homework by 8pm tomorrow nite. I did take a break last nite in order to watch the Broncos whomp some Raiders A$% tho hehe:clap: .

Biodude - Sounds like you had a nice day at HOAG Sun!

Minx - sounds like you're having a decent semester so far....100 pgs/week total for all your classes isn't too bad. As far as transfer app essays, how about just why you want to come study in the states....?

Vix - I haven't gotten to see League of Extraordinary Gentlemen yet, but I haven't read the book and I thought the trailers looked good for it...My power goes out at the weirdest times too lol...but we don't usually have outages for more than an hour or two.

jenni - Congrats on surviving your first anatomy exam! Hopefully it went as well as you thought it did! I'm the same way tho....after an exam I just don't want to do anything anymore lol.

Oh no lilithny. Are you sleeping enough at nite? Eat something sugary before class and doodle a lot lol....that's what keeps me awake sometimes....other times there's just nothing I can do lol.

Good luck Hermeone! Try and have a lil fun every once in awhile too lol!

Ok I'm off to start working on these write ups....my goal is to finish both of them tonite so that I can hang with my bf tomorrow nite (or mostly finished) but we'll see.

Later all!

Hi All,
Skaterbabe- Can't you ask the teacher during the test if you are in doubt? Just want to know. Oh yeah, the Raiders got Owned by the BRONCOS. A Solid Victory. Also, I've heard that Colorado is crazy about the Broncos? Lots of fans?

Jenni - Ya Office Space is the best movie EVAR! Just remembering the quotes from the movie makes me laugh. Good Luck with the results although you must have gotten them by now, hope you did well.

-UICpremed🙂

P.S.: And BUMP!^^

UIC - Sure I could....if it had even remotely occurred to me while taking the test that they may not be the same thing lol.

My lab writeups are taking too long this week lol. They wouldn't have been bad if we weren't doing IR spectrums in orgo this week. That meant trying to figure out what functional group 25 molecules belonged to without having any idea what the various functional groups really are yet lol.

I need a nite completely off soon to spend with my bf!🙁 😡 😛 . Maybe tommorrow...

Nite all

Hi all!

Well, according to the answer key he posted, I got them all right (or so I think) We don't get them back till tomorrow though-it just depends on how anal he is....

Interesting experience yesterday-I went to help the anatomy prof transfer the cadaver into our humidor (he picked it up from MCW and brought it up in the back of his Suburban:laugh: I wonder what would have happened had he gotten pulled over?) Anyway, I STILL can't get the smell of formaldehyde out of my hair and it's driving me nuts!!! I'm glad I did that, though, it gave me a few extra days to deal with the emotional issues of seeing a cadaver before we actually start dissection on it.

Then we started on our cats this morning-luckily I'm paired with a guy who is going into hospital administration so he wants me to do most of the actual dissection work😎 I've realized I've gotta be more aggressive on the cutting, though...we ran into problems when I didn't cut away enough of the fascia...oh well I'm still learning...

As far as chem goes, I'm getting really frustrated with our lab TA. I didn't understand how he wanted us to do the uncertainty and average deviation calculations (along with the sig figs) b/c he explained it differently than our prof did in lecture. So we go to lab and he just tells us to start. No introduction or anything. So we get our data and start working on the calculations, ran into trouble, started asking him questions, and then he kicked us all out early and told us to do the calculations at home! So I go to the actual prof yesterday b/c I'm lost and I find out that the lab sections he ran, he walked them through everything and explained it+pissed+ Another girl and I explained what our TA had done, our prof got upset and said he'd talk to the TA. However, he said he didn't want to help us b/c he knew the TA did things differently so we'd have to nab him and have him walk us through it. And the TA doesn't keep regular office hours. 😡 So now I don't know what I'm going to do....and unfortunately I can't transfer to a different lab section b/c they all conflict with my anatomy lab. And I wouldn't be so upset except that all the labs are curved together for the grade, which puts those of us in the TA's section at a huge disadvantage...oh well, just gotta hope he does things better in the future and muddle my way through for now...

Surprisingly, despite all this, I'm actually in a good mood today if you can believe it😀 Don't know exactly why...

Skaterbabe-that would really suck having to do a lab b4 you've learned the stuff to go with it-I feel for you! I hope you got the extra points on the physics exam-profs surprise you sometimes with how many points they give you for attempting...

And since everybody else is doing it......BUMP😀

Hi all!

Hope everyone is surviving this semester/quarter! I ended up dropping the Chemistry class as the professor missing the first class caused us to be so behind. (I work full-time right now so was nearly impossible to catch up...and this is ONLY review for me!) So, I'm just taking my Calculus course and have a quiz tonight that I haven't studied for 😱 eek.

Am filing all of my paperwork for matriculation at SJSU in the Spring and will go to the financial aid office on Monday to beg for more money (since my FAFSA certainly doesn't reflect me NOT working!!). Wish me luck. I figured that I'll be taking 4 courses in the Spring - Chem 1A, Physics 2A, Bio 2 (Animal systems), Bio 3 (Cell Biology). All of them have labs so will be in class ALL day (hey..just like a job!)

Anyway, back to studying my math..... Happy Thursday/almost Friday everyone!

Hey all! 🙂

Today was a pretty good day for me. I didn't realize how far I was behind in orgo at the moment tho lol. We started chapter 5 today and I was just reading chapter 4! lol...oops...i think i'll catch up this weekend tho finally. My labs today were both fun and relatively easy. Both were mostly playing on computers hehe. In orgo we ran an IR spectrum of an unknown and then have to identify it based on what we know about the spectrums and a list of possible unknowns that we have. Mine's an alcohol and there's only two alcohols on our list 🙂. First we had to work thru a program on the computer that helps us learn which peaks/valleys correspond to the different functional groups tho so that was the computer portion of the class. In physics we were using a different program to find "g" (gravity) so that was a short easy lab. Orgo lecture was typical....we've started reactions with chapter 4 so now it's practice, practice, practice time lol. And in physics our prof hadn't finished grading our exams yet so we just did more force/friction stuff. Turns out our prof plays sax Wed nites at a couple of our local bars/niteclubs. Think my bf and I will have to check him out some Wed...I used to play sax and still absolutely love it 😀 . At one place he plays in a big band, and at the other he plays jazz.

Jenni - Don't worry about having a light touch when dissecting...it's better to not get rid of enough fascia then to cut out muscles too lol. Plus it's really easy to tell the diff between fascia and muscle on cadavers...you'll get used to the formaldehyde tho...I promise....your family on the other hand won't hehe. The only thing you can do is wash your hair a lot lol....and wear a ball cap....the smell will still get in your hair but it's an extra layer it has to go thru so it helps a bit. Sorry you're having a rough time with your chem TA tho.....our TA's didn't care how we got an answer so long as it was the right answer lol. Try emailing your TA.....I imagine you and he can work out a time to meet...

As far as doing labs before you really have the knowledge base from lecture under you it's unfortunately very typical. Even in anatomy there were many times that our lab material was covering different stuff then our lecture was, although eventually all the same material was covered there. In this case it just sucked cuz we've only covered like 3 functional groups so far out of the 20 or so that exist lol so I had to spend a lot of time with my text looking up the chemical names in the index and then reading the info about them to figure out what functional group they belonged to. Course then it turned out that I didn't really need to have that sheet done for class today, but oh well...it's done anyway lol.

Roselee - Sorry to hear you had to drop chem, but it sounds like it was a good decision. Good luck on your math quiz!

Anyway, I need to go input my Ch 4 orgo homework (it's due at 8pm mtn time) and then start working on the suggested problems from that chapter. Luckily tomorrow I only have physics and work so i'll have plenty of study time 🙂.

Later all!

Sup All?

School is going ok, though I still have my old habit of being slack. I have no idea how I've managed to keep decent grades for the past 3.25 years of school.

I'm seriously considering attending an extra year, just for ****s'n giggles. As it stands, I'm having to cram everything in at the last minute -- shadowing, volunteering, and my remaining prereq's -- in order to apply in Summer '04. Not to mention that, if I am accepted, I'll have to spend a year apart from my about-to-be-fiancee.

I am considering switching my minor to music. I played the sax in high school, but haven't really touched it since I started college -- I really miss playing. A minor in music will afford me lots of benefits: extra time to spread my courses out and take care of the "loose ends", more time to change old habits, a great experience and skill to take away with me, and I won't have to spend a year away from my girl.

My only reservation is, "What if I could get in a year earlier?". It will take some time to answer that one, but I think being on stage performing once again will allay my reservations.

Other than that, school is blah. Same usual routine.

This should help in analytical, thanks. Anyway...its toot my own horn time. I got a 100% on my first orgo test 🙂 We also had a lecture on all the chromatography, and got to look at all the cool GC machines. Today I had the first analytical test which wasn't so bad, but I got nothing done in lab, and I hate labs in that class. Oh well, tomorrow is friday, and that means me and my good friend Captain Morgan get to reunite once again.

Hmmm. Eating. That's a thought.

I've been trying to catch up with class work, and reverting back to my ugrad days, I forgot that beds are for sleeping in... it's got so much stuff covering it, I doubt it can even be useful for sleep.

Anyways, figured I would take a break from studying A&P. How many other people are taking this class and what do you think?

Anyone know of a good site for chem review. I need a good chem primer as I'm going to be taking a pre-nursing exam soon and havent taken chem in awhile.

I have a book I've been studying but i'm getting stuck on certain reactions.

Good news everyone! I did better on my physics exam than I originally thought; I made a B! Turns out he had listed the same grade twice in his computer, the second time being for my social#. I figured my grade wasn't THAT bad.

On another note, I've really been thinking lately. I'm close to graduate and have the opportunity to enter med school in Fall '05 (assuming my grades are good enough) but there's so much I still want to learn while in undergrad. I'm considering either a minor in music or a second degree in physics. For some reason, I really dig physical sciences. It wouldn't add but an extra year and has the same benefits I mentioned before, but then again there's always a chance to get in med school a year early.

This will take some serious thought and planning. I'm sure there's no way I could do a degree in physics AND a minor in music. Both would be great though.

Anyways, I'm out. Later

Hey all 🙂

Lilithny - I know what you mean. Most days I don't eat a whole lot while at school either, but if I'm feeling sleepy I make sure to grab something out of one of the many vending machines I walk by lol.

JKD - Congrats on the better physics grade! And I think either a second degree in physics or a minor in music would be a great addition to your psych degree!

Agent - Try one of the Schaum's Outlines. From what I understand though the chemistry for nursing is extremely basic (judging by what the prenursing students at our school were doing in their class while we were doing gen chem) so I'm sure you'll do totally awesome! Good luck on your exam!

On the agenda for me today is finishing Ch 4 problems in orgo, and then working on some cell bio. Hope everyone has a good weekend!

many people take time off between college and med school. this'll be your last time to learn and do whatever you want for a long time. i'd go for doing something special given the chance!

Finally home for the weekend. Today I had an exam in both statistics and logic.

The stat exam ended up being nothing like the practice exam or homework. I really didn't think it was that bad, and I ended up using algebra to work most problems rather than stupid stat formulas. I hung out with a group after class and it seems I did pretty good on the exam; monday I'll know for sure.

My logic exam was another story. This is such an easy class, but I totally blew the exam. I needed to look over connectives and truth tables a bit before the exam. However, around 11:30 I went to visit a faculty member who is writing a LOR for me to deliver some supplemental materials. We ended up just chatting for almost two hours! I left his office around 1:15 and my exam was at 1:20 😱 Needless to say, that's one exam I shot to hell. Watch me end up with a B+ in LOGIC 🙄

Oh well, it's just a grade.

Hey everyone,

I am just bushwacked from this week. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have time anymore to answer everyone's posts, so I'll just answer posts that look like they haven't been answered yet. Another note to people who started school on the last week of August: Isn't it ridiculously fast how quickly 5 weeks can go by? I mean, today would be the last school day of the first 1/3 of my semester! 😱

JKDMed - Hey dude, that stuff about Logic...same thing happened to me! I mean, geez, on the very first POP QUIZ for my Logic class I ended up with 60% correct 🙁 Luckily though, it doesn't count into the exam scores, only homework points, which means that I don't have to worry about not doing well on quizzes for this class.

Well, this week went by relatively fast. I had a practicum in my Cell Bio lab on techniques that we are supposed to be proficient at (Gram Stain, Microscopy, making graphs using Excel, etc.). Needless to say, I screwed up on my Gram Stain like I always do 😡 Oh well, no big deal. I think that I did relatively well on the other parts of the practicum.

Calculus was same ole same ole...lecture, homework assigned, all homework due on Monday, blah blah blah. I'll just skip that since it's usually pretty uninteresting.

Greek Philosophy. In this course, we began talking about Socrates and also a dialogue that he had with a theist before going to trial for offending some people. It was quite interesting, as it started to deal with what is morally right? I mean, does God set the rules? Or are the rules already there and He simply points them out? Being a non-Christian myself, I believe in the latter, although that poses a question, because if what's morally right is a standards that God points out, then I guess that some of what He does is questionably immoral...at least from what I've gathered in reading parts of the Bible (yes, I did examine that book). Of course, if He sets the rules, then that would make GOOD and EVIL irrelevant...as in, what's wrong is opposing what He wants.

I just wanted to stir up some controversy there. Feel free to tell your opinions on the topic that I discussed in Philosophy class if you want, though that doesn't sound right putting it up on a pre-medical forum. Oh well 😀

Logic wasn't interesting as well. I took a pop quiz which was easy as pie, and I don't think that I got anything wrong (this is different from the pop quiz I mentioned to JKDMed up there).

Cell Bio...Tuesday was the second exam, and needless to say, it was harder than the first. I don't think that I did so well on that one. Oh well, I guess I'll have to devote more study time to that class, right? 🙂

Back to today...I just came back from a pre-health professions association meeting and what I gained from that meeting was that medical schools look for people who really really stand out. I mean, it's great that you volunteer in soup kitchens, hospitals, and doing research and whatnot, but your committment level and how much you stand out from the rest of the crowd seems to be what matters in determining acceptance or rejection. For example, everybody works in a homeless shelter at some point or a food bank, but how many people actually think of something innovative, like designing a low-cost but nutritious meal plan?

Also, in terms of skills not learned in the classroom, it seems that communication is a biggie, and what interviewers look for (so says my pre-med advisor) when they interview people. I mean, if you could put patients at ease, that seems to be a huge plus, since being the doctor, you might have to do some uncomfortable things...giving shots, drawing blood, running "tests", etc. Most doctors don't communicate very well, do they

Leadership is also a biggie according to my advisor. I think that's pretty self-explanatory. If not, I can explain in another post.

The basic thing to do is stand out! Do something that makes you unique among the average pre-med student. That's what my advisor says. Do something, anything, that would make med schools go "wow, it would be great to have one of these kinds of people in our school." When he serves on medical school admissions committees, my advisor looks for people who are unique whenever they interview those people. Like one of the questions posed in the interview would be something like, "What do you think makes you better than the person we interviewed before you and the person we will interview after you?"

My pre-med advisor usually gets the wrong answers. "My GPA and MCAT scores are outstanding" or "I volunteered X amount of hours" or "I did Y research"...after all, everyone of these people have relatively similar amounts of research, volunteering and grades/MCAT scores. So that doesn't really make them stand out.

TO ACCEPTED MEDICAL STUDENTS WHO READ THIS THREAD: What are your thoughts on this? What do you think made the medical school(s) accept you over probably 30 other applicants who interviewed with you (besides a more laid-back interviewer)?

Now to prepare for another tiring bout of Wu Shu practice. I have to get in shape somehow 😀

If I was in your situation I would forget about everything else you mentioned in your post and concentrate on that highlighted paragraph. True, it's important to stand out, but blending in with a competitive gpa and average ECs is better than standing down with a low gpa and excellent ECs. It's just not how it works. To be competitive, you're going to have to somehow do well in classes like cell bio. If not, you just won't be considered when you apply. You should put all of your ECs on hold for a while and concentrate on your grades. If you get a D in cell bio, you're going to have a lot of trouble convincing an adcom that you can handle the rigors of a medical education. I think that you're making light of the situation at hand, blowing it off as an "Oh well." The bottom line is that if you want to get into a medical school, you need a decent gpa. If it means giving up ECs for a while to achieve it, then that's just what you have to do.

Now the only reason I'm responding is because I remember commenting on this thread months back about a similar problem. I said it before, and I'll say it again; without the numbers, you will not get in. From the duration of time you spent posting on this site, it seems like you are serious about attending medical school, but without the right numbers, you just won't get in. Sometimes getting that "A" takes some sacrifice, including giving up things that you enjoy doing. I'm not trying to be an ass here, but since you asked for advice from people who had successful interviews, as someone who is doing great in the interview process I'm trying to give you some constructive advice; take it or leave it.

Who said anything about getting a D in cell bio?!? So Biodude may not have done as well as he would have liked on one exam out of several in a semester....he doesn't even know what his grade was yet (or at least he hasn't said) and yet you automatically assume he's on the road to a D?!? I'm sorry, I may be a lowly (read sarcastic) U of Colorado student, but I'm clueless where that leap in logic came from....

Biodude - Sorry to hear your exam didn't go as well as you wanted, but no worries....I'm sure you'll still rock the class! BTW I totally agree with ya on the morality rule thing. Sounds like you're having a good albeit busy week lol.

JKD - Congrats on the stats exam! And oops....at least you had a good conversation with your LOR writer lol. Better luck on the next Logic exam.

Back to studying for me!

Haha. I don't even think that they're ranked by US News. I wouldn't be so sarcastic about it.

And one test means a lot. Most bio classes have 3-5 tests over the semester. It can bring someone down almost a full letter grade or more. There is nothing wrong with my logic. His low grade is most probably attributed to his abundance of ECs. It's important not to bite off more than you can chew.

Shows how much you know....UCCS is one of the top 5 public masters granting institutions in the west according to US News. We only have 2 phD's at the moment so we don't qualify for the "big" list, but we are "ranked".

And the point was that he didn't say what he got on his exam...only that he didn't do as well as he would have liked. That could mean anything from an A- to an F but you jumped to the assumption that it was a D or F and that he'll end up with a D in the class. That's the leap of logic I was talking about....

p.s. sorry to the rest of the thread...this will be the last thing i say to this poster...

   Wow. That sounds like quite the impressive list.

I stand corrected.

And besides, anyone who gets below an "A" in freshman cell bio doesn't belong in medical school anyway. Comparing it to medical school cell bio is like comparing first grade math to honors calculus.

Gee, squat n squeeze, you must be afraid that medical schools won't accept you, so to even up your odds, you try to make other people feel bad. You must be so insecure despite being at a "Top 25 University" and "getting a 4.5 GPA". Sounds silly, doesn't it? There's no need to stress so much about the process of applying and interviewing. Especially if you're doing this well. Take a chill pill. That's my advice to you, sir or madam. And that will be the last bit that I shall offer to you. Good day.

To everyone else, IGNORE this poster. PLEASE. I don't want another flame war started up, especially on a thread that's meant to provide support. If you wanna flame people, take it to another thread. See the ignore function at the bottom of the screen? Press it and you won't have to read his/her stupid as heck posts. They are so idiotic that they kill my brain cells just from reading them, which is why I don't anymore. Just let this idiot post whatever hot air he/she wants until he/she realizes that nobody's gonna listen anymore.

Skaterbabe74 - hey, no worries. I'm a laid-back sort of guy. Besides, I can't see what trolls post up, and I don't intend to because it's usually something so stupid that it's not worth my time to read it. I still have 7 more exams and a final, and these should be easy as pie if I study more. Plus, I have extra credit assignments that I could do to boost my grade up way higher than someone like squat n squeeze could possibly hope for in my situation. Please just ignore the troll.

I can't stress this enough. Ignore the troll. If you keep responding, you'll only feed it more and more and more. And then I'll be staying away from this thread because it will have de-generated into a flame war. PLEASE, please, please ignore it.

Well, now that Wu Shu practice is over, I think that I'll start up on my Calculus homework again...

Ugh-studying on Friday night really sucks-I'm taking a break right now....I've got reactions and limiting reagents swirling around in my head a little too much for comfort....

Biodude-Funny, I was just talking to another premed today about the same thing-what makes one applicant better than another. He has two older brothers who are physicians, one served on an adcom as a med student for a year, and he said (among many other things), they don't want number-spouting automatons. They want real people! Your personality should be apparent and that's where the unusual ec's come in, as well as the interview. We were actually laughing about the freaks who think their GPA and MCAT scores are enough.....so keep up with the ec's if you think you can handle it! God knows I'm overloaded enough myself now (see the bottom of this post...)

Also on the morality thing-I agree with you and Skaterbabe totally too 😀 We're discussing the Hellenism-Hebraism theory contrast in history right now...basically the thinking for oneself vs. blind obedience thing. My thoughts...if you take the thinking approach (and this assumes that you are unblinded by prejudice, of course) eventually you'll arrive at the same morals that are "dictated by God", since at some point you'll probably realize that in order for mankind to survive and progress, these morals are necessary. I realize this is way simplistic, but I haven't done much Bible study so take this for the uneducated opinion that it is😀 (Ya know, I really like this philosophical kind of stuff-maybe I do need to minor in it!) Kudos to you for bringing this up!

JKD-congrats on the stats exam! I commend you for being willing to take logic😀 -I was going to but was warned away from it by about ten different people...so I filled that slot in my spring schedule with stats instead. At least I hope you'll feel better when you get the test back and you can figure out what you did wrong...it's small consolation but for me it seems to help a little...

UICpremed-how's the apt shaping up? (Can ya tell I've been watching too much of Trading Spaces lately-I'm just really curious about other people's houses:laugh: )

Skaterbabe-Nice to know another "nerd" was at home studying on a Friday night! Now I don't feel so bad... I totally apologize-I missed one of your posts a few pages back and didn't answer your questions so here goes...I haven't won a race yet but did place third once. The problem is with a V6 firebird, I'm stuck in G-stock class with all-wheel drive Subaru Imprezas and a couple other small maneuverable cars. And there's generally about 12 competitors in my class. I'm planning to replace the crappy Goodyear tires that my car came with this winter, so hopefully that'll help me next spring!

OPM conference-as of now I'm planning to come along with another OPM/SDN member from Milwaukee who I've met with a few times. She's really cool-has been an OR nurse at the main teaching hospital for MCW for 10+ years and I've learned a lot from her (not only medical but life in general!) You'll love her! We'll definitely head to Nordstrom with you but I don't know how much we can buy (plane ticket and hotel room=$$$$...😱) Looking forward to meeting you too-only eight more months...

Back in my world....on that leadership topic again, somehow I managed to get myself elected treasurer of both the non-trad student club and the science club-both former officers graduated last year so they were looking for "new blood". One of the guys who belongs to both knows that I used to be an accountant, so he opened his mouth and nominated me and it snowballed from there.... It's not going to be hardly any work (for me at least, I can balance a ledger in my sleep:laugh: ) at first I was a little "ugh...I left that profession for a reason", but then I decided I kind of like it, just so long as I'm not doing it all day long, you know what I mean? And I'd better keep in practice so I can fight with the darn insurance companies later on:laugh: The other officers are a fun bunch, too, the exec meetings are going to be a blast!

OK, really long post (I'm sorry!!!!!!!), but I feel back to normal now...how bout you?

Wow! It's been such a long time since I've been on SDN that Biodude is running the M1 forum! Does anybody know what happened to agent?

Last week, I finally had enough money to buy a very cheap low end computer, for the sole purpose of posting on SDN. So, I'm glad to be back. (I was clean of my addiction for 4 months)

Anyway, right now I'm taking Bio 1. I finished with physics 1 over the summer and received a B. I was a bit disappointed because I should have had an A, but I was called away for annual military training halfway through the semester. My prof was cool and allowed me to make up my labs, but he made me take a test on the three chapters I missed 2 days after I got back. Needless to say, I got a D. I just wasn't ready for it. So my pre-req tally so far is B- in Gen Chem, C in O chem, and B in Physics. I've starting looking for study material for the MCAT. I have plans to take it in the spring, but if I don't feel I'm ready I will wait till next fall. Its kind of a wait and see type thing.

Well, this post is starting to be Biodudesque in length so I'll quit. Its good to be back and look forward to hearing from some of the newbies.

Hello, everyone!!

Sorry I haven't dropped in a long time. I've been really crazy-busy. I didn't have a chance to read all of the posts yet, but I did scan a few.

You guys seem to be doing really well on those tests. Keep up the good work. (I made an "A" on mine too. But admittedly it was an easy test.😉 ) I have another one coming up Tuesday. I think I have to actually study for this one.😀

Pharm-Tech is interesting. I guess it entails more than I thought, tho. It is not difficult but very time consuming. You read, you read, and then you read some more.

I am still excited tho because I plan to integrate pharmacy into my medical career. This has started me thinking about the MD/PhD route. I am sure that desire will wear off quickly and applying to medschool alone will suffice.

I hope to get in some personal replies soon. Take care!!

Hey CJ2Doc and 2badr! Where have you been? 😀

agent is doin' fine. If you skip the troll's posts and go back to the previous page, you'll see that agent still posts here from time to time. He's changed from medicine to nursing for the sake of his family. I'm not running the thread by myself you know. I only started this one up. Skaterbabe74 deserves credit too. At least she posts a lot. I don't have much time to post anymore.

2badr - what's wrong with deciding on the MD/PhD route. Sounds good to me. I know that a lot Pathologists have those double degrees and the PhD helps a lot more in research skills than an MD alone. Is it because of the time it takes perhaps?

CJ2Doc - Long posts that ramble on are very welcome. I don't wanna feel alone 😛

jenni4476 - Hehehe, it figures that they don't want number spitting automatons. I certainly wouldn't want my doctor to be a number spitting automaton. But then how many doctors out there have good conversational skills? I guess training does that to people...gee, I hope not. I'll keep a journal when I get to med school to remind myself of the person I used to be if I end up like the average physician in terms of conversational skills.

Well, I have math homework, Logic homework, and Philosophy readings to do. I have Wu Shu practice at 1 p.m. though I think I may have twisted my kneecap yesterday...and lastly, I have a party to attend tonight (even I have a life you know 🙄 )

Hey all! 🙂

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

jenni - Congrats on the 3rd place! Given all those small maneuverable cars you were talking about that's awesome! I've always wanted to be able to take out my frustrations by driving as fast as i could lol....

I'm sure we'll have a blast at OPM. I'm looking forward to meeting both you and your friend! As far as not buying much given the price of getting here that's totally understandable, but it will be the first weekend of an awesome sale so I imagine you'll be able to find a deal on something lol. If not we'll head over to the Rack too which is where stuff goes after a sale or markdown and gets marked down even more hehe. I can't wait to find out where the convention will be. I'm hoping somewhere downtown by the med school since I really haven't spent a whole lot of time down there other than for sporting events and a couple bars/restaurants, but the Tech Center area is usually cheaper and that's closer to Nordies and has lots of restuarants too.

Congrats on getting elected treasurer of both your clubs! I think next year I may try and become an officer in ACS (I think most of our current officers are seniors). I don't think I want to be prez tho lol....maybe vp, sec, or treasurer tho 🙂.

Hey CJ! Welcome back! Congrats on the B in physics given the military interruption this summer! Good luck in Bio!

2Badr - Sounds like you're enjoying Pharm Tech! And congrats on the A on the first exam! And no I don't think an MD/Phd sounds nuts at all lol. I'm considering getting at least a masters if not a Phd in kinesiology at some point (course that depends on how much I enjoy the kinesiology classes I'll start taking next year hehe). For me I think it would be awesome to have both for sports med, especially if I decide to try for ortho since it's still not exactly "easy" for women to get ortho spots.

Biodude - Thanks for sharing the credit lol. I don't post as over as I used to either so don't feel bad lol. And be careful at wu shu practice today with your knee....twists can turn into sprains or torn ligaments very easily if you try to do too much on it. And definitely put some ice on it. Knees are something that I definitely know a lot about lol. I never messed them up skating or dancing, but in hs I strained it running hills, and then a couple years ago I partially tore the ligaments in my other knee by not paying attention at work....a box was sticking out from the wall and I walked too close to the wall and walked straight into the box (it was a big heavy box). Suffice it to say my upper leg kept going while my lower leg stopped lol. Couldn't sell shoes for a month and had to go to vegas on crutches lol.

On tap for me this weekend is finishing my orgo notes, reading the next chapter, reading my physics chapter, reading and taking notes on my cell bio readings, and doing another excel homework for research methods.

Have a good one everyone!

GRRRRRRRR.

Spent (almost) all day studying organic. We're having our second test this tuesday. I have to beast it.

What else. Physics quiz wednesday. About 2,000 genetics problems due wednesday. I have to come up with a topic for my environmental toxicology paper/presentation.

No classes thursday or friday. I have to present my summer research on saturday. EnviroTox, Physics, and Genetics tests the week after.

If I don't get an A on this organic test, there's something seriously wrong.

But I'm not stressed or anything.

An entire day of organic? *shiver* I'm depressed enough knowing I'll have to sit through organic II again in the Spring.

I've decided I am going to switch my minor to music. I can't stand not playing anymore, plus it will give me a chance to play on a pro-model sax. I'm staying away from the alto, as my tone was never that great on it, but I'm sticking to the Bb instruments -- soprano and tenor. Even though I had a student-model tenor back in high school, my tone was crazy on that thing.

As far as how long I'll be in school, it seems I may be able to still graduate on time (Spring 2005) even without taking any music courses in the summer. I'm pretty sure I can work something out to get out of there in time, but who knows. I really really want to take a class on Jazz Theory as well as Jazz Improvisation that I may not get to if I graduate earlier.

So I figure, "Hey, I"ll just go ahead and do it. If I end up having to go another year, who cares -- that entire year will be only music courses" 😉

Hope everything is good with you guys. I've been really freaking slack so far this semester, and I'm not really sure why. Hopefully whatever is wrong will change soon.

BUMP

You know what? I think that I'll just occassionally drop in to bump up the thread, you know, just to let everyone know that I'm stilll here and reading.

Hey all! 🙂

Sounds like you have as busy a week as I do Vix lol. I have a research methods exam on Wed, an orgo quiz on Thurs, 2 labs on Thurs, and a physics homework Fri.

JKD - That sounds awesome! Go for it!

Today was an easy boring day for me lol. Research methods is one of the most boring classes I've ever taken (so far anyway). It's all such common sense. Then I went and worked in my lab for an hour (my boss moved me off of distillations finally😀 ). One of the guys showed me how to use the GC/MS machine and then I ran an IR spec of one of his creations. In a couple weeks I'm supposed to get to start doing reactions of my own 🙂. Then I had orgo lecture which was slightly confusing, but I'm starting to get it down. Then I had cell bio where we got an outline for our exam....we are going sooo slowly in that class lol....we're like a week and a half behind where we should have been but that will make our exam over less material anyway😛 . After that I went and ran another GC/MS of the stuff from this morning cuz the first one was way too diluted. This one turned out well tho.

Tonite I'm going to try and get thru my physics write up and some of my orgo write up which I'll finish tomorrow. I have an ACS meeting tomorrow and have to work in the stockroom tomorrow morning (blech!). Wed I can do fun stuff in the lab again instead.

KCOM is coming to campus on Thurs and it's actually at a time I can go to so I'm looking forward to that. Don't know how much I really want to live in Kirksville, MO for 4 years, but it is one of the closest DO schools to here so I'll at least check them out.

Anyway I better get going....hope everyone has a good week!

It's been an interesting week, and its only Monday. I turned in my preparation of Dulcin lab report today, and found out that one of the organic teachers(not one that I have) passed away last night of a heart attack. The department is going nuts trying to shuffle and get the 2-3 sections she had covered. As for the actual class, skaterbabe, you will be pleased to know that we finally started looking at newman projections today 🙂 I have to go into analytical lab tomorrow and work overtime to finish part of this same dumb experiment I've been working on for weeks. Wednesday we have a chromatography lab, and our second Organic test. It's on nomenclature of all the functional groups, including aromatic ring compounds, which has the potential to be a big pain. I should be getting my first analytical test back tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes.

Keep on keepin on everybody.

Hey everyone...

This has been a good Monday- and makes up for the dreary, rain soaked weekend we've had here in NY.

I aced my Anatomy & Physiology quiz today. woohoo! I think it was a good warm up for the exam on Friday. Today in lab we had a brief lecture on articulations and the remaining time was devoted to studying for our first practical. I might be nuts for thinking this- but I'm really looking foward to it.

As for my other classes, I have a Chem lab report due wednesday and a stats exam on thursday. Psychology is so blah... she draws things out way too much. This is the one class I know not to look at the clock, cause I would just cry. Oh well. My golf class totally makes up for it. Hoorah or PE classes!

Coz-- that stinks about the organic teacher. Hmm. If our organic teacher were to die, we just wouldn't have organic chemistry🙁 (he's the only one) . The things we take for granted at a small school.

JKMED- congrats on your major change! It sounds like something that will truly make you happy.

Lilithy-- congrats on you A&P quiz! And good luck on the test!

Today, my only class is organic. (And no lab because reading days are this week). So that means that all I have to worry about is this test. Which is probably why I'm up three hours before class. I feel prepared, but you know. He warned us that he was going make this one much harder since several people got As on the first one (its 'ruining his rep').

Other than that, tomorrow is my last day of classes for the week. Managed to trade RA duty weekends with a chick who just joined the staff so that she wouldn't have to change her travel plans. Which means that I'll probably have to be up late before my presentation on saturday😡 . I need to learn how to say no.

What else do I have to do this weekend... catch up on genetics reading, start/finish envirotox homework, study for envirotox midterm, genetics test, and phys test. Decide what classes I want to take next semester. Grrrrrrrr. I can't wait for winter break.

Bump you!

I have an organic test tomorrow, and a lab on column and thin layer chromatography. Busy day. I got my anal test back today, I got a 96 🙂 That made my day. Will help my inevitably bad lab grade. More tomorrow!

Hi everyone! It sounds like you are all really busy....glad to know I'm not the only one...

This week is our cadaver lab dissection in Anatomy and he holds it at night from 6:30-9:00 (this on top of everything else I've got!). Suffice it to say that I haven't had time to breathe yet...

All I can say is that this experience is telling me more than anything that I'm headed in the right direction -actually seeing and working with everything is getting me so motivated! I was on cloud nine Monday night after I did the work on the anterior abdominal muscles and my prof said it was the best he'd ever seen it done in 25 years of this class-usually the obliques and the transverse abdominis get totally messed up since they're paper-thin and hard to separate. Guess my un-aggressiveness came in handy here...tho on our cat in normal lab section it isn't working so well-I leave too much fascia and spend way too much time trying to get it off...just need to learn where I can be aggressive and where I can't (important life lesson for me too!)

And on a creepy note-last night when we were working, the lights in the lab kept going out on us. The first time it was a student messing around but the next five times someone was actually looking at the light switch and NO ONE was there! Weird, hey? Especially with the cadaver there...

Good luck to all of you-I'll get around to replies sometime next week when I have more time😀

hi everyone!
i have been really busy this past weeks at college . How are you all doing?
lots work and reading to to (aprox100pg per week)🙁
I can't believe that mid-term start next week I'm had just had history quiz today, idid a fine job. I'm my last quiz i got a B.
thanfully thtey have not cancelled my O-chem and cell bio clasess.

vixenell i agree o-chem take a long time to study . yesterday I spent almost 3h doing my o-chem homework

well i have to leave i got to go and do my o-chem lab report.seeyou

if idon't get any email notifications i drop by.

I spoke with an advisor person in the school of music about the minor thing. It seems if I did it, I would have to study alto sax! Blah! I had my hopes set on continuing with soprano/sopranino/tenor.

I guess realistically it doesn't matter, as they're all pretty much the same. I don't know whether I will switch to the minor or just take the theory courses and play on my own. Prolly switch anyways, which means I get to buy an alto now on top of the soprano/sopranino. 🙁

Hi all,
I've been just lurking around to see what others are posting, I haven't posted much. I also noticed that it has slowed down a bit in this thread. I guess people are more busy. I have an easy schedule this sem 😛. But I am also looking forward to next semester.

I remember doing Rat disection in Biology lab in High School. hehe. I don't remember much of it but I know I felt a little queasy sometimes with the smell and feeling and seeing the inner organs. I dunno if I will be able to handle a human cadaver. I guess you should put away the feeling and lock it up firmly?😉 I think when I take Bio I next semester, we will be dissecting the cats.

Skaterbabe:
"Today was an easy boring day for me lol"

haha, I think that sentence has two dimensions to it. When it is easy, you would like it because its easy but at the same time it is not hard enough to keep your interest hence its boring. lol

Vix:
Coz-- that stinks about the organic teacher. Hmm. If our organic teacher were to die, we just wouldn't have organic chemistry (he's the only one) . The things we take for granted at a small school.

Are you going to graduate from there or transfer out? One of the positives of a small school is you also have small classes. In some of my classes at UH, there were 400 people in a single class, only one teacher presiding. Sometimes it can get frustrating.

I am just doing my work, waiting for my acceptance from UIC for undergrad to come. I am trying to catch up on some of the stuff that I didn't attend class for in math.

Later
UICpremed 😀

UIC-- i plan on graduating from here... money would be the only reason why I wouldn't, and thats still up in the air.

I got my organic test grade (can't believe he'd graded them all already). I did a few points better than my last test, and he says that he expects me to keep an upward trend. No pressure or anything😡

Yeah. Completely bombed my physics quiz this morning. I don't know what was wrong with me. I've had a three-day headache, and I only started and finished one of three questions. But I talked to him afterwards, and he said that it shouldn't have much of an effect on my grade.

What else. Trying to decide what to do this summer. I really want to take some classes at UNC, but my orgo teacher said that I can do research with him. Depending on the time frame for that, I think i'll just hang out here and make $3,000. I've also started to apply to the Mayo SURF program, so we'll see. I'd really like to be able to take diffeqs and/or A&P while I have the chance. I have ages to decide.

As far as classes go for next semester, I'll take a phil class (doesnt matter which), orgo II, science & pseudoscience, linear algebra, waves and heat, and prolly fencing again. The classes kind of overlap at this point (a downside to small schools), but hopefully the honors course will be rescheduled.

But yeah. Reading days have officially started! And I'm on duty this weekend😡 . I really wish I could've gone home, but I've got A LOT of work to do, and I know I wouldn't do it there.

Coz, I did the same thing! I swear, If I never see another chair diagram again, it'd be too soon.

Hey all! 🙂

Had my research methods exam today. It was easy but way too long. I barely finished in time. I think I messed up at least one question, but not sure about the rest of it lol. Hopefully we'll find out next week 🙂.

I've got my orgo quiz tomorrow and I still have to finish my physics write up for tomorrow tonite as well. I've been majorly slacking all week hehe. Thankfully our quiz is only over alcohols and alkyl halides....but we need to be able to do Sn1 and 2 mechanisms already...so i'll be practicing those over and over tonite with various compounds hehe.

I'm starving so I'm gonna go get something to eat...and take some aspirin....i've had monster headaches lately thanks to the weather changes....allergies kick up big time lol. I may be back later to reply to y'all but for now I need food! lol

BUMP!

Hey everyone, I just wanted to stop by and provide a very quick synopsis of my current situation. Today, I have many things to do for Cell Bio Lab tomorrow, and currently, I am doing some research in the library which is unfortunately not yielding any results so far. Add to that the homework that I have to be finished with by lab tomorrow and you can tell that I'm one very unhappy camper.
