The Waiting Game

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Started this thread just to see if anyone else is as nervous as I am?? Lets use this to share our thoughts and anxiety!!!

heck yea I'm nervous! no acceptances thus far🙁 at least I haven't been rejected yet either. I'm a little paranoid though.

I'm very nervous and impatient. All my applications have been mailed and I'm getting emails stating they got them, however my last letter writer still hasn't submitted her letter for me yet.

I hate waiting for that long, especially when I submitted all my apps in early October...

Just got rejected by Dartmouth. I'm a fresh grad in biology and realized that most incoming MPH students who got in Dartmouth are physicians...seems like I applied for the wrong school...what a frustration.

So sorry to hear about Dartmouth. It's my top choice and I should be hearing from them any day now. Eek. Hoping that my demonstrated interest in medicine and publications will convince them to overlook my lousy undergrad gpa... Not counting on it though. 🙁

Congrats on submitting your apps in early October! That's way before most of the deadlines, which is great. I did not get around to submitting until November/December, so I plan to be waiting around for a long time.

Wishing you the best of luck with your application process. You submitted all your apps early and you have a great undergrad major, so you're in great shape to get into a solid program. 🙂

submitted 2 apps dec. 1st and submitted all SOPHAS apps last night!!! the LOOOONG waiting game has just begun for me LOL. Good Luck!

This thread is a little too quiet, I can't believe no one else is nervous. I submitted all of my applications before my deadlines and I am very anxious. I've already begun second guessing everything about my personal statements and wanting to smack myself for not stating things differently. But its too late to get all worked up about it LOL. Now I am trying to resist the urge to add more schools to the list. I've applied to six schools already so I've cast a pretty large net, but can't help feeling like the more the better. I guess the only thing we can do is wait? I wish more schools had rolling admissions or at least made decisions earlier!!!

Hm. I submitted all my SOPHAS apps on Dec. 1. I am waiting for them to verify my apps and submit them.... and then i will legitimately be in the waiting game.. but i am waiting for them to do this.. this sucks..

i hope that they do so before dec. 15th. because i think one of my schools needs to have the app in their hand by the 15th.. though this is contestable, tis better to be safe than sorry. anyways, i'll prolly be a little sad if my apps arent sent by the 15th, but not despaired.

SOPHAS should have a rush processing fee.. where you can pay to get your app verified within 5 business days or something...

Hey aaftmb, I submitted mine only a few days before you (11/26 and SOPHAS was closed that day) and my app was verified on 12/08 so hopefully that means yours will be in the next few days...just keep your fingers crossed. Good luck!

I'm nervous too but what can you do? I am trying to convince myself that I will not receive any word from any school until February (and March for Harvard). That way I don't make myself crazy.

Good luck to everyone!

Does Harvard usually release decisions in March?!! They really take their sweet time! I also applied to Harvard(MS program of EPI) and it was my top choice(probably everybody's top choice...😳). I finished all my apps in early November and Sophas mailed my materials on Nov.24th. I have to wait three month before I hear from Harvard???

And the bad news is: I became even more nervous and impatient after I've been accepted to a few schools(with rolling admissions). I just cannot wait to hear from the others, so that I could determine where to go. I am also thinking of applying for a TA/RA position. Have you any idea whether it is possible for a master student to apply for RA position?

i also applied to harvard and emory.., but i submitted last week so my app has not been mailed yet. anyways good luck!

MandyL, I'm pretty sure you can. At least, when I was looking in to Tulane they encourage Masters students to apply. That's actually what I planned on doing as well, being an RA to cover the cost of housing.

For the rest of you, if you apply to GW you should hear back super fast. I got my acceptance in 2 weeks and 2 days!! But I'm getting more nervous because I still haven't heard back from some of my top choices so yikes!

ooh count me in this anxiety/nerves waiting game! I submitted my apps on December 1 (everything had been into SOPHAS earlier, transcripts, scores, etc.) but I had about a million Personal statements to write! 😡

SOPHAS still hasn't sent them out yet but hopefully they will tomorrow..from what I've been reading it looks like they send out on Tuesdays...

It would be nice to have an acceptance before winter break, haha wishful thinking!

Ugh I am going crazy. I feel like my obsession with hearing updates from graduate schools is becoming unhealthy, lol. I check my applications sites/ SOPHAS/ email etc. way too much in hopes of seeing something. (It doesn't help that MPH programs seem to update us about each little step of the application process)

I agree with MandyL, when I first submitted my apps I was just happy to finally press "submit" and carried on with work as usual. But now that I've gotten into one MPH program I am so anxious to hear back from everywhere else!!

I wish there was some standard date that all schools let us know by.

smd18,
Congratz on your acceptance to GW! Emory also has a rollling admission, so I got accepted in three weeks. 🙂
I didn't want to bring too much financial burden to my family, so I was planning on being an RA to cover some cost. Besides, I think the experience is helpful if I want to pursue a doctoral degree in the future.

Yup, just submitted everything myself. I'm extremely nervous, and I just want this whole thing to end! Am I too late? Am I good enough? Did I write the right things? Did I submit on time?....it just goes on and on...and on.

I know I hate this! I keep beating myself up for not submitting earlier...but its always 20/20 hindsight. I had so many things to do this semester with school and working...*sigh* excuses, excuses. I just want SOPHAS to mail my stuff out 🙁

Hello,

Is an RA the same as a Teaching Research Assistant? If so, is there a difference between being a Teaching Assistant and an RA? It sounds interesting, I'm just not sure what the position description entails.

How do you apply for this type of position? Does it depend on the school?

Thank you.

RA is Research Assistant, and TA is Teaching Assistant. By definition, TAs assist with classes, while RAs assist with research. TA responsiblities may include: holding office hours, grading homework or exams, administrating exams, etc. RAs help carry out the research, but they are not directly responsible for the outcome.
I'm going to contact the professors whose research fields interest me to see if they need RAs, after I get accepted. You can also send an email to the admission assistants if you have questions. They're willing to help.🙂

Is Columbia driving anyone else nuts?

I'd heard they were slow but this is ridiculous. My transcripts all most likely arrived on Nov. 6, that's when they got to SOPHAS and another school, but they STILL say "not received" and that my app is incomplete.

I emailed them twice and both times got that "please wait at least 2 weeks..." reply. 2 weeks my ass. If it takes them 6 weeks just say that! :eyebrow:

Is this happening to anyone else?

SAME HERE! Columbia finally updated my transcripts, but still says it hasnt received my test scores yet :/ It's so annoying because I submitted (like you) MONTHS ago. It's just so annoying that my application still isn't "complete" because they haven't matched my stuff up :/ Hopkins was much better about getting my stuff in...

ME THREE! I sent my transcripts and scores in early September and they still have only posted 2 transcripts and one school isnt even listed under the application status. I only emailed them once b/c at this point I feel it won't really help. I just hope the status is updated by the "hard" deadline of Jan 15th.

I was doing fine for a while after I sent my applications (I submitted as early as October 12th for Columbia), but this week I started getting nervous because my 3rd LOR finally got sent in. So for anyone has gotten acceptances from any of the following schools, how long was it from when your complete application was received by them and when you got your acceptance?

Boston University
Emory
GW
Tulane
Tale

Thanks in advance! Congrats to those who have already been accepted 🙂

I applied to Emory, Tulane, and GW. My stuff was mailed out on November 23rd. I got an acceptance email from GW on December 9th and just got the acceptance packet in the mail on the 15th 🙂 I haven't heard from anywhere else but I heard through the grapevine that I was accepted to Tulane (my one LOR writer is a Tulane alum that knows admissions). Otherwise, I'm still (not so) patiently waiting on Emory and USF and a formal email from Tulane.

Hi,
I e-submitted my SOPHAS app on November 4th and SOPHAS mailed my materials on November 24th(according to the email from SOPHAS). However, I received a notification from Emory on November 18th, that my app had been forwarded to dept of EPI. I got acceptance to Emory in three weeks. I guess SOPHAS mailed my app around mid November. And I got accepted to Tulane on December 3rd.

My completed applications were mailed out at the end of October, I got an official acceptance from Tulane about 4 days after they received my application (but it was early in the cycle and they probably didn't have a lot of applications to review), and like MandyL, I got my acceptance from Emory 3 weeks to the day after they sent me an email that my application had been sent to the Global Health department.

I haven't heard from Boston U yet, but I received an email from them just a couple of weeks ago saying they were getting into fall applications, so maybe soon?

The holiday season is in full swing now and may affect the timelines for schools.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks everyone! I'm just starting to get a little anxious, so it's good to see how long it took other ppl. I know it will be longer with the holidays.

Well, I'm sorry for you guys but glad to know that this seems to be normal for Columbia.

I have another question:

You know how on SOPHAS you can click "School Decisions"? Mine all say "School will contact applicant with decision." Does that mean SOPHAS will never record whether I've been accepted or denied? I assume they will, but if you have experience with this I'd like to know.... to know whether it's worth compulsively checking 😀

Last year I applied to UIC, USF, UNC, Tulane, Emory, and BU. None of these schools use SOPHAS to notify of their decision so they stayed "school will notify" the entire application process/waiting game.

i got the acceptance from Tulane< international health concentration> for the spring semester............!
also..i am an international student

Is anyone out there still waiting? My application was complete a few days, and sent to the Admissions Committee for review but waiting is so hard... I find myself checking the application website everday.

Dont worry, I'm still waiting. I haven't received any acceptances or rejections yet. I didn't send in my applications until the end of January so I suppose it is reasonable that I haven't heard back, but I am impatient. I'm also totally distracted at work because I am either obsessively checking my iPhone or wanting to leave right at 5pm to check my mail. I think my employees suspect something and I feel bad for being so distracted.

I wish I would have applied somewhere where I could check the status 🙂. I do know one application went to the admissions committee last week and another one was being prepared for the admissions committee but that is it.

The only good news I've received so far is I strangely had a school that I didn't apply to contact me to see if I still wanted to apply. Although, I don't know that I do. I should probably just apply to distract myself. Not to mention, it isn't that I have any other options right now.

Im still waiting on two schools that a decent amount of people have heard back from which makes me really nervous.. 🙄 I feel like Im back in HS applying to college and waiting by the door for the postman every day after work... Im just going crazy from self-doubt...

lkashdf;ioayshd ;iansdlkmnfas;dkfha;seruha;mksndf;ajksdsdjkfhlaksdhfklajsdhflkjahsdklfjhasldkfhlaksdhfjashdfahsdlfjhf

so frustrating...

Still waiting as well. It's getting perilously close to the official notification date for one of the programs I applied to, but I called and they're still reviewing applications.

So glad others are waiting with me. It seems like so many people have heard back and I wasn't sure if anyone else was in the same boat.

Is anyone else going crazy waiting for Harvard?

While it's encouraging to see so many people from such a wide variety of backgrounds already receiving their acceptance, I become more anxious each week that goes by without on any news on my own application. Especially seeing people get already get into the same exact program I applied to.

While I'm very thankful and excited for the choices I already have, it would be so nice to factor in Harvard into my final decision.

Oh well, hope I hear back soon.

I totally feel your sentiment! While I am happy for those that have gotten in, I couldn't help but feel bummed yesterday when I didn't get the glorious email I had been hoping for. And yep, I felt worse seeing people get accepted into the exact program I applied to. While I do want to get in, I feel like the waiting is worse than getting a reject. In addition, I have decisions to make and I can't help but be peeved Harvard is waiting so long to let us know. It's really frustrating.

Just know you are not alone. I think I might call Harvard on Monday to ask them how much progress they have made with the applications (i.e., have they gotten through most of them? half?)

Sending good thoughts to all who haven't heard back yet....

Yes! I sent my application to Harvard in October ugh. Also, I'm not sure why they would make decisions without looking at ALL of the applications? As far as I know they are not on Rolling Admissions. I worked really hard to have my application in well before their unusually early deadline. Harvard does have a strong program/strong reputation and will definitely be a school I consider if I get in (makes the wait even more agonizing)

Like you said, right now it's time for us to make a decision as to where to attend this fall! Harvard has had my app longer than any other school I applied to, it's ironic that they will be the last to let me know.

Let me know if you glean any new information when you call.

We are in a very similar place! I had my application in early and I am seriously considering Harvard. In fact, it is probably at the top of my list even if I don't get any financial aid (which it sounds like I won't, considering MPH students rarely do). There does seem to be no logic/reason as to why they accept some applicants earlier rather than later. I've been trying to crack the code but in studying this forum and gradcafe, it seems I'm not the only one baffled as to their process. People last year seem to be similarly confused.

I'll definitely post if I receive any new information. Stay strong!

These posts are really comforting 😳 Thanks to everyone who had their inputs on Harvard...I'm waiting as well and terrified of a rejection since getting into the school means SO MUCH to me. If I get in I will go there for sure. I've been trying to make decisions between my offers so far and it's been incredibly hard because none of the schools had the perfect fit for me thus far. So Harvard is really the deal breaker.

For the past two weeks or so, I think my mental stability has deteriorated significantly. People are afraid to talk to me now.

Hi everyone!
I thought I would never post on this forum even though I have been following the posts since October (creepy I know lol).
I definitely understand how all of you guys feel about Harvard. Every thursday night I can barely sleep because I am thinking I will wake up with an answer in my inbox. Yeah well, it didn't happen 2 Fridays in a row so now I am extremely nervous.
I have also applied for the SM2 in Global Health and Population (submitted by application since October as well, mailed by Sophas on Nov 23). Hopefully the department is just running late on sending responses. I did call admissions yesterday and I asked if it was true that they sent responses only on Fridays and the guy said that in general responses were ready to be sent out on Fridays but they have also sent some during the week. Like many of you, I have tried to figure out the admissions trend and noticed that acceptances were sent on Fridays and rejections during the week (I am most likely wrong haha, but I have been going crazy over this so I had to figure a trend to make myself feel better and little more in control lol). I feel a little bit ungrateful because I have gotten into great schools but like Parapluie said Harvard is such a fit for me- in my eyes at least. It is not even the name only but all the opportunities they provide seem just wonderful. Well let's just hope for the best. Hopefully all of us here will have great news by the end of next week.

PS: I noticed that last year that had sent some answers on Saturday so I was hoping to receive an answer today, wishful thinking lol.

I was banking on the Saturday acceptance thing too lol. I feel really silly for not making any plans on Friday/Saturday out of anxiety over Harvard. For two friday's in a row I have made excuses to stay in! It might be because Harvard is the last decision I am waiting on. All of my other schools I was pleasantly surprised to see my admissions news, but for Harvard I feel like I'm wasting my time trying to "analyze" HSPH admissions patterns.

So glad to know I'm not alone! I haven't been able to sleep at night (especially Thursday night!) because I keep dreaming I've received an email, so I wake up thinking I have to check it! Agony...

I am starting to feel better--and a little more hopeful--after seeing that others haven't heard back yay or nay. However, I don't think I can take another roller coaster ride of getting my hopes up only to not hear back from them on Friday. My emotional state is becoming more and more fragile by the week! 😕

Yikes, the waiting to hear back from Harvard seems very stressful. Just remember that sometimes no news is good news, although I can definetely relate to just wanting to know one way or another!

Good luck to all of you waiting to hear back.👍👍 I applied to SM in global health and population and heard back Friday. This was my last one and was quite agonizing to wait. I was sleep deprived for sometime 😴

But beleive me, although it is thrilling at first, the real agony starts after you hear from them becuase you have to choose between schools.
For me it comes down to JHU, Columbia and Harvard..
Compared to others Harvard is pretty expensive and being an internationl student with limited funding, it is NOT an easy decision to make,😕 no matter how much I'd like to go there 🙁

Anyways good luck y'all! Relax and take a deep breath!!!

Congrats Geeran,
I think JHU MPH program is more expensive than Harvard's the last time I checked out, and by about 11,000 for tuition fees. (JHU 51,000 while Harvard 39,000 approx). I didnt check for Columbia because I didn't apply there.
Am also an international prospetive student accepted at JHU but anxiously waiting for Harvard.
Btw, harvard is the only school I understand that gives loan funding to international students without requiring a co-signer, which I really hope to get.
Goodluck on your final decision!
