Theoretically, can a specialist pay back their 200k loan in 2-3 years?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I guess I should do MSTP then.
I guess you learned nothing from my post last night.
It will be exceptionally hard for you to get into med school after dropping out of your MD/PhD program because you can't cut it in the PhD part.

I really just want to have a guarantee of a high salary and being able to work 30 hours a week.

Med doesn't guarantee what you want (if actual med students/docs want to put me in my place as a premed, that's ok)..

* Work in a hospital = > 30 hrs. per week
* Work in urban private practice = > 30 hrs. per week
* Work in rural private practice = > 30 hrs. per week
* Administrate private practice/hospital & don't perform clinical/research duties = > 30 hrs. per week

don't like hands on work.

So, you're going to pull a House & do everything without touching at all?

Goro? Lizzy M? Can you please put her in her place?
haha Goro already told her to not even apply to med school when she complained about having to do volunteering in order to get into med school

This is under the assumption that she'd get accepted to an MSTP in the first place, which is pretty amusing by itself.

Okay. The thing is, I really just want to have a guarantee of a high salary and being able to work 30 hours a week. No other field guarantees it. I looked at dentistry, but find mouths gross, and don't like hands on work. I looked at pharmacy, but 100k a year for 45 hours a week, is not enough for me. And, those who say to go into business/banking/engineering/law for the money on this forum, well, you guys do realize that many people in those fields who work there even for 40+ years still are making only 70-80k for working 45+ hours a week? Not enough money for me. Medicine is fine, I am fine with serving patients, and I might find it fun, so I will go to medical school.
My ex is an engineer and started at 100k/40 hours a week with great benefits (at one of the best companies to work for in the US) and no school debt. If a PhD is gonna be so easy, you can always get a PhD in engineering and go into industry.

OP isn't willing to work 40 hrs/wk or earn "only" 100k. The job she wants doesn't exist, but she's too immature to realize that nothing comes for free.

I'm still waiting to hear where I can get a job making 60k as a "paper pusher." If she can do it with her hypothetical Bio degree, I'm sure I can do it with my degree.

But the thing is... medicine is not guaranteeing you what you keep saying you need. There is no guarantee whatsoever that you are going to match into a "lifestyle" specialty.

Also, if you apply to medical schools saying medicine is fine and you are okay with helping people and it may be fun, you won't go to medical school.

To be fair, volunteering is a waste of time. I really haven't met anyone that actually wants to volunteer outside of SDN. Pre-meds do it because it's required. If it was required to finger a donkey to orgasm, pre-meds would end up sucking it up and getting at it.

Really? I have met tons of people who volunteer and they're not pre-med.. or even in a related medical field.

It seems like the problem is that people always confuse their clinical experiences with their volunteer experiences. They don't need to be the same, but pre-meds assume the only volunteering that counts for med school apps is bringing glasses of water to hospital patients. (or whatever it is that clinical volunteers have to do)
To me, it would be a red flag if a person was unable to find ANY volunteering experience that wasn't fun for them.
Like I said in that thread, my partner has been volunteering for years at high school quiz bowl competitions. He didn't even realize it would count as volunteering because it was something he wanted to be doing.

You should volunteer to read or score at some high school tournaments. It's a lot of fun! (plus free donuts)

Me too. However, they are all over the age of 80. At the hospital I volunteered at, it wasn't uncommon to walk into an empty patient room and find some old volunteer sleeping in a chair.

haha I have seen those too, but they usually aren't sleeping. But when I started volunteering and did my training, there were probably only 2 people in the group of 65 that were over 65.

You've literally never met anyone under the age of 80 who volunteered? Have you ever been in or near a church? Service organization in college? Sorority/fraternity philanthropy event? Volunteerism is relatively common in our society among people of all ages. It doesn't have to be medically related and it isn't something that only premeds would do (and only then cynically to advance their application chances). You guys make no sense.

Problem with OP is, she doesn't care about other people, at all. So she won't find a volunteer experience that is fun because it won't directly benefit her.

FWIW, I LOVE the volunteering I'm currently doing. Working with an animal rescue is a very rewarding thing.

Yeah, but if you're a retail pharmacist you pretty much get paid that salary to stand around and not do much. The field is over saturated anyway.

Werd. Most of the people volunteering for my HIV/AIDS community support program have no medical aspirations, and are more concerned with ensuring members of our community are well-cared for. I started there because all the bench work (and the gobs of cash dropped on it) was hurting my heart.

Why would old men with skin cancer get in the way? I'll just say I can't come in to work that day, and have someone else take over. Big deal

If I didn't think she was a troll before I certainly do now. Most of her threads have been closed and this one should be too.

WHOA Alright, so I had a life today and didn't go on sdn since morning, and I go on sdn now: 56 alerts! wtf! Lol you guys sure do like me. But I guess I love attention so it's all good. THANK GOD my other threads got deleted! I think you guys have had enough fun from them, and I was just trying to learn while you guys were having all the fun. But I am REALLY NOT a troll. I am legit and a female. However, I have been told that I act and think like a male, and I have taken a legitimate psychological brain-gender test, and apparently my brain has a male gender.... And I honestly don't even understand how a lot of females think. But I don't consider myself transgender or anything, I am just a female with a male brain. But I am not transgender or whatevs, I am nontheless a female. (In fact, I don't understand how most people think in this world, not just females). Anyway, Oh my God you guys posted so much stuff today! Ahhh it's hard to catch up on all of your posts. But thank you everyone for all of your insightful info.

HOWEVER! I found a lot of info on Mommd, and there ARE A LOT of moms who are DOCTORS, graduated med school, even placed into radiology AND have never worked full time in their life (post residency!) I mean, come on, that's exactly what I was looking for. Maybe all of you sdners are workaholics.

Post residency is the key word. You've gotta work hard at first to achieve it all. I have some of the same aspirations you do, I also want a family. I'm not as certain about my specialty as you, I'm very interested in peds and fm, though. Who knows, that could change.

Alright, I guess I might be able to settle for working long hours but ONLY during residency. Definitely not post residency. How many kids do you want, and are you male or female?

Yeah from what I've heard it would be pretty rare to come straight out of residency and get good hours, you'd still be the junior doc in the practice so would probably have to put in 3-5 years before you'd get to start scaling back.

Orthodontics. I think that actually may be the only respectable job that fits her criteria.

Probably not granted a high level of job security. Should be careful involving that. Typically you'll want to work for a while before taking it part-time

"OP, you never replied to my comment explaining to you how DermBucks work. I should think that after all the questions you've been asking, and everyone piling on and making fun, you'd appreciate some serious advice. I guess this is the thanks I get for trying to help you!!

Anyway, because I am a nice guy, I am willing to continue helping. If you reference my earlier post in which I outlined the DermBucks calculation, you will notice that your physical attractiveness plays a crucial role in ensuring you meet the minimum threshold of DermBucks that is (according to AGCME guidelines) REQUIRED of all candidates for dermatology residencies. Three factors determine your DermBucks total: Step 1 score, LizzyM score, and your looks on a scale of 0-10. In order to help you get a better idea of how high you will need to score on the Step exam, I am willing to take a look at some photos of you to give you my honest evaluation of your looks. This will relieve a lot of the stress and let you know where you stand at this point. Feel free to PM photos/Facebook link directly to me if you'd like to conceal your identity from some of these trolls and sweaty jerks who are just sitting behind their laptops eating poptarts, drinking mountain dew, and listening to Ke$ha as they post their stupid, unhelpful cat memes.

How many siblings do you have? I grew up as an only child and hated it. Wish I had siblings. Thats why I want children so bad, so that I can actually watch someone grow up and be involved in their life. I want 4-5 kids because I am tired of being bored as an only child.

A dermatologist with bad skin maybe? A sad life, that.

Then again, I'll bet it's like guys who like working on cars; none of their vehicles work.

I have 4 siblings and 3 sister in laws.

I'm significantly poorer than you and I still volunteer.
I was in an honors society that I volunteered through, I would volunteer at blood drives in between my classes.
That excuse won't fly when you apply...

About 15.5 years between my oldest sister and my younger sister.
My younger sister and I are 18 months apart, though.
