So far the people who have applied after me have gotten interviews, does this mean I've been passed up? Although I don't have the stats near Illfavor.

I'm confused, how did you get an interview for SA BEFORE your application was submitted?

You still have to wait. 😀 If you transmitted in Mid/late September you are literally at the end of the line. While I think Baylor checks applications like right after they receive them, but SA and Houston seem to be done "in order" of receipt. And Houston is pretty slow going and interviews well into January.

It wouldn't surprise me if schools get notified immediately when an app with stats over a certain threshold is received. It would seem foolish for them not to. I've heard of those with high stats getting invites super fast.
Don't worry if you have average stats and are middle of the pack, there's still plenty of time.

I think I qualify as 'high stats'. My Baylor invite took only 2 days, but SA and Houston took at least a month.
bummer.... well maybe not all those with high stats get Baylor invites right away, maybe some get them later? I would love to go to baylor

Of course some do. I know we are creatures of habit and function based on experience and repetition, but this process is too random to take any "trend" seriously. For every one that gives you some hope, there is another that dampens your spirits. Trust in your quality as an applicant and do whatever you can to get through this terrible process unscathed. Honestly, I feel like I should have heard something by now (as well as some others on the TMDSAS forum who have even better stats than I do).
I am really starting to get worried, and I'm sure there are others who are in the exact same boat.
Is there anything that could possibly be wrong besides applying a bit late? I submitted TMDSAS on 9/6 (all of my letters got in by 9/18 because the professors were slow).
My AADSAS was mailed out on 9/13 to NOVA, LECOM, University of Tennessee, and Western (I am really counting on staying here in Texas) but I have not heard a single thing from any of the Texas schools, or out of state. NOVA rejected me a week after I submitted (my 3rd LOR was mailed out a week later, I'm guessing they rejected so fast because I did not have it?)
21AA, lowest is 19 in Bio and QR, 3.54 sGPA, 3.45 oGPA.

I've called a few times and get told that I'm still under review and will be contacted if selected for an interview so there's not much we can do. They did mention that this year is insanely more competitive than previous years so maybe our stats just aren't up to par with the apparent super humans that are also applying with us.

I can tell you about my interview last year haha. It was pretty chill one student one faculty. They match you with your faculty based on common interests... I guess although my faculty interview sucked. Don't worry about the essay, they really don't put too much emphasis on it. Also, don't worry too much if your interview didn't really go the way you wanted it to, I cried after mine haha and I still got in.

Well guys, 23 days left in November and no Texas interview invites🙁.. Starting to get worried now! I had my TMDSAS submitted early July and receeed e-mails from all the TX schools saying they received my application by mid-July. I e-mailed my pre-health advisor who assured me not to worry as Texas dental schools fill up their seats slower than other schools, and that by February they normally have only given out ~60% of the offers they will eventually extend. I hope this is true, but I can't help but wonder why more of us haven't received interviews, becasause last year's "TMDSAS 2013" thread was going crazy by this time, and we only have 5 pages..! Anyone else know anything about this, or have any knowledge on how TX schools go about sending out interview invites? They gave a large round of invites early on it seemed, and since have only been giving out a few here and there (from what I've seen on SDN), but I've been hoping for another huge round of invites...
Anyway, congrats to those of y'all with invites so far!..and for the rest of us, let's keep our heads up!

This thread is so incredibly dead this year, geeezzz. It is kinda blowing my mind.
Anyhow, last year my application was received around mid September and I didn't interview at Baylor until the last interview date in November (right before acceptance letters go out lol) and didnt interview at Houston until late January. Although UTHSCSA interviewed me around mid October.
That being said, stay positive you guys!! We still got time.

lol hey sorry i havent been on SDN in a bit, I meant 10/28 and 10/16 I just corrected that thread sorry
when you use the term "best"... it depends on the person. Baylor makes you do tons of lab work with strong academics. UTHSCSA has strong academics with emphasis on research. Houston is right in the middle (more laid back). Go to the school where it suits you, not because its #1.
If you're goal is to be GP, then go Houston.
If you're goal is to be GP, then go Houston.

Historically students have left Baylor with more clinical experience based on the number of crowns, extractions,...
Right now us 3rd yrs are having a hard time finding patients for crowns/fillings and we have too many denture patients. A clinical faculty head told me that it seems that those in private practice in DFW have had a slow past few months as well. Most of us 3rd yrs are just cranking out our denture requirements so we can be done with them and hope that things will pick up. Since this summer most 3rd yrs who just started clinic have completed a few denture cases, have done 10-20 fillings, a few type II perio cases, 25++ extractions, and a couple crowns. Not sure where the other schools are at.
The lab work at Baylor does suck but supposedly they are constantly trying to improve that. We used to have to cast our own gold crowns but not any more. We do all of the lab work for dentures except processing the acrylic but supposedly next yr the lab will set teeth for us. As 3rd yrs for crowns we send the impression to the lab, they give us a pindexed cast but we have to trim the dye. In 4th yr we have to do our own pindexing which sucks, hopefully that'll changed by the time you're a D4.
Baylor has almost all of the specialties here at the school so we are taught and supervised by specialists rather than GPs, but then we lose a lot of endo to the residents. We only have to do 4 root canals and none have to be molar. I wish it was easier for us to get root canals.
We get a really good pedo education at Baylor. This week I got to do an emergency pulpotomy on a trauma patient at a community clinic while I was on rotation. We don't place implants as undergrads but restore them and can assist for the implant placement done by OMS residents. We learn about implants and practice making surgical guides but that's about it concerning placement.
There's lots of gunners in the current 4th yr class, I heard yesterday that -42/100 will specialize including gpr/aegd (13 for ortho, a bunch OMS, 2 pros, -5 perio, and I dunno the rest).

What does that mean exactly? Average for applicants? For interviewees? Sounds pretty unlikely either way.
Anyways, all the "best school" talk is just talk. It's the same way in every discipline. Every school has a "top program". Folks all say "our students are always prepared", etc. Take it with a grain of salt and go to the school that is most comfortable to you.

Hey guys...its been a long time since I have been on this board. I am currently a D4 at Baylor and I would like to answer any questions you might have about BCD or dental school itself. Good luck to everyone!
Why did you choose to go to BCD?
If you could start over, would you still want to go to BCD?
What are your thoughts about what slm said about it being more difficult to find patients this year than what has historically been offered at BCD?

#1. I was accepted on the first round to BCD and Houston (was invited to interview in SA in January). I chose Baylor strictly on reputation, location, and proximity to girlfriend (now wife).
#2. I think every dental school has its pros and cons obviously. I plan to be a GP so that is important to note also. Pros: Fixed, removable, oral surgery, pedo, and perio. I will leave Baylor knowing a lot more information about the basic (most important) aspects for the GP. The lab work is strenuous but the knowledge I have gained from it is priceless. I now know how to the tell the difference from a good vs bad product from the lab and also know if I can fix a problem (and how to fix it) or if I need to send it back with instructions why it is wrong. Lab techs are not dentists and we should not depend on them to do our job. As far as surgery goes, its awesome. Prepros, exts, tori removal, ect. Cons: Ortho, implants, endo. I will leave BCD not knowing how to place brackets/Invisalign on a simple case. Our graduate endo department receives most of the undergrad endo. Our requirement is now 4 w/ no molar requirement. Other schools do a lot more. BCD's implant class is trending upward but still needs work. So to answer your question, yes I would choose BCD again bc I really don't care for ortho, don't plan to place my own implants, and have always known I need to take more CE for endo.
#3 As far as the pt pool is concerned, it might be a problem compared to what Baylor is used to, but compared to other dental schools around the country, its still well above avg if not one of the highest. BCD's priority is the D4 class when it comes to assigning patients. I recruited my own patients D3 year and BCD only had to assign me perio and removable cases. This year I am loaded with patients and will cut over 40 crowns and restore over 100 teeth. Pt pool is very cyclical. Couple years back BCD couldn't find removable patients and now there are a ton. Also, the D4 class will be phasing patients to next years class and that will help also. Bottom line is Baylor will find a way to get you your essential experiences to graduate.

LRP is a big reason why I am looking into that. Baylor paid for me to do a preceptorship with the IHS in Clinton, OK, and I really enjoyed my time there.

Awesome. Did you get any info about salary? I've heard that overall compensation with LR is very competitive with associate jobs. Something like $100K plus about 20K in LR? What did you like about the IHS? Did you consider NHSC?

I am trying to be optimistic, however I realize my GPA is very low and this cycle is extremely competitive. My GPA has been competitive throughout my undergrad; however in FALL '12 I began working 40+ hrs/wk. My GPA ultimately plummeted over the course of 2 semesters. I am trying to be optimistic however I realize (on paper), I'm not all that competitive this cycle. I also graduate this Dec. so raising my GPA is not really an option in the near future.
Am I being too naive by thinking BY THE GRACE OF GOD, I still have a small chance this cycle? or do I need to just give up on this cycle?

Did you get any interviews? I assume no...If so, I think UTSD is the only school with lots of interviews left to give. I don't really know about the GPA. Some schools just put you in the "other" pile and move on. Even with great ECs and such, grades are clearly really important. It's hard to "explain" poor grades, barring serious life troubles. Your DAT is average so you're at a pretty big disadvantage. If you don't get any love this cycle, it's pretty clear you'll need to raise the GPA.

No interviews...Will plan to retake DAT in the spring and apply to UNTHSC masters program. However it is only a one year program; I am concerened that is not sufficient time to significantly raise the GPA??

October/November has been extremely slow on the TMDSAS forum.. Still have not heard a thing from any of the three schools, and I know there are a lot of us in the same situation. Should we still be looking forward to post-dec interview invites? Or is it truly over? I feel pretty disheartened that I haven't heard anything back.
