So, for reasons that are currently still not a 100% clear to me, my application cycle is not going as well as I had planned.

Is the start of December considered late for DO apps? I'm guessing so but am curious how late it might be. I've tossed out a few DO apps already but haven't gotten any bites. Just trying to gauge how much more money I should pour into this. I'm currently looking at tossing apps out to CCOM, DMU and KCUMB.

Thanks

At this point, you'd probably be complete with your secondaries -- awaiting IIs -- by early to mid-December. If your stats are competitive, that's not too late.

Check the school specific threads to see how the cycle is going for each program. Some may be more appropriate to apply to now than others.

What are your stats? International? US Citizen?

Yeah I seem to be in the same position. I got my mcat scores back in mid september, got verified by mid october, secondaries were requested by early november, and I haven't heard back from any schools except for one.

Starting to get concerned, and thinking of expanding the game a bit.

Does the secondary deadline give any indication of how much lateness is allowed?

Lol I'm just finishing my first batch of secondaries now so this is good to hear.

Well...most say they take 6-8 weeks. Seems like you're still well within the time frame, considering I'm assuming you finished the secondaries in early-mid Nov.

Secondary deadlines are probably useless, since admissions are rolling. It's my understanding that a secondary in right at the deadline would almost certainly go unread.

I spoke with KCU yesterday as my secondary (submitted a few weeks ago) isn't complete yet. They said they have very few interviews left and are only completing competitive applicants at this point! Good luck!!!

It's getting late but if you're a competitive applicant, then yes, get some apps out NOW!!!

@Prairiepalmeri

Wait, so you mean someone can fill out the secondary, but if they aren't competitive they won't bother to download the letters/complete the application?

Or are you referring to only very competitive applicants getting II's?

The staff member I spoke with said they are only sending out complete emails to competitive applicants. So it sounds like they will let anyone complete a secondary, but they really aren't giving everyone a chance at this point. Hope that helps.

I'm hoping 35 MCAT and 3.89sci (3.58cum) is still considered competitive at this point, so I guess I'll toss a few more out.

Sadly, I'm worried it's not my stats, but a toxic letter that might be dragging me down... still, might as well take a few more shots.

Thanks for feedback @Goro

What was written in your toxic letter?

Do you have any red flags in your app?

No red flags other than (possibly) the letter.

At my last (and only) interview, both my interviewers asked me about my motivation for medicine. First interviewer framed it as something one of my letter writers said.

I asked my premed advisor (who did my committee letter and so saw my letters) if she recalled anything like that. She said she did not.

So, while I desire to trust her, I can't shake the feeling that it's true. If it's not true (no toxic letter) than I am very much at a loss as to why things are going so badly for me.

Are you saying that perhaps one of your letter writers wrote that you don't have any motivation for medicine? Perhaps I'm misinterpreting your post.

Specifically it was phrased as the "wrong" motivation for medical school (money and/or father-emulation). But basically you are correct.

Objectively, it's probably not true (taking my pre-med advisor at her word - she didn't see anything like that in my letters, most likely interviewer testing me). However, it's still a concern, and as mentioned above, if it's NOT that, I'm very much at a loss for what is causing me problems.

But it seems like there is still at least a small window available for me with the remainder of my DO schools, so I'm going to try to capitalize on that.

I was complete at about 6 DO schools by mid-October w/decent stats. I have one II for an MD school but haven't heard anything from the DO schools. It is kind of nerve-racking but I am still hoping for interviews. I think I may add a couple more schools this week. My stats are approx. 3.45/27 to give you an idea of my competitiveness.
