I know their is a shortage of PharmDs and this is projected to go on for some time but it sure seemst that they are a lot of schools opening up or exisiting schools that are expanding their class size. Will their be too many Pharmacists in the near future? Does the Pharmacy Association monitor this?

And let's not forget the ratio of female to males in this profession. As long as part-time work pays like it does now, I think more females will choose to have babies and spend more time with them since their salary allows them to.

I waiting for Zpak to say something about how the pharmacist shortage is bunk because we have a surplus of lazy asses that only work 24 hrs/week, thus the shortage is truely a shortage of men who hate being around their family. He rants like a champ.

So I'm assuming you are doing some MRSA protocol thing?
We had the Tygacil rep come talk to a group at my school and we reamed him so hard that by the time we were through he basically admitted that the drug only had a use in the 1/30000 people with MRSA and zero kidney function (Right? ID was last year and my memory sucks...) His stupid little propaganda pamphlet tried to pawn it off as better than "imipenem and cilastatin" because it was one drug rather than two. As astute little aholes we pointed out that the combo came in the same little vial and that the pamphlet was being puposefully misleading by making it look like cilastatin was an antibiotic. Ahh, good times....
So what kinda vice grips are you putting around those drugs?

The Kroger I work at has lost a pharmacist to Target because they give 20 hr/week part time pharmacists benefits. Another is considering a move because she wants to be part time for her two newborns. Z isn't crazy, he just has the unfortunate problem of having too many family zealots in the pharmacy.

Why can't you use Vanco for MRSA in Zero Kidney fxn?? Pt doesn't have Kidney function so renal toxicity isn't an issue.. and Vanco Renal toxicity is very rare unless it's being given with Aminoglycoside. Normal Hemodialysis dosen't remove Vanco...but it will eventually get removed..so you dose it like once a week. No need to use Tygacil because of no renal fxn.
Tygacil is useful for resistant Acinetobacter or VRE (Enterococcus faecium) and it is more cost effective than Zyvox IV.
The reason Imipenenem/cilastatin was brought up was probably because it's used for Acinetobacter...and costs about the same as Tygacil..
I can learn you all this stuff..if you spent a few months with me.
We'll restrict these antibiotics for Infectious Disease physicians only..and they'll only be able to write it for confirmed or suspected VRE and/or Acinetobacter.. or MRSA with no IV access..then use Zyvox PO.
Remember, Tygacil is a bacteriostatic drug..not bactericidal.

Yes....it benefits everyone -- you, me, my life, my SO, my other job....just talk to me - I'll work extra, change shifts, hours, etc......we women can be veery flexible 😉 !
