Throw in rankings for COA, and I bet UNC is top 3, lol...HELL YEAH! Throw in Athletics..and they take the top spot for sure.

it's a great school, I actually applied to UNC and not Duke (stupid secondary), but I'm sure most would agree that harvard/hopkins/duke are better than UNC.

Stanford would probably be #1 in overall D1 athletics (I think they pretty much are every year) but they would get owned by COA! (and primary care, lol)
 
Well, instead of COA you should look at avg. indebtedness. Hopkins' is super low, and Stanford's is the lowest, regardless of their COA.

But yeah, Stanford's clinical experience, especially in terms of primary care, is...uhm....lacking. (I'm being really really nice here).

I'm a little confused, what sports are they at the top again? Not football, basketball, tennis, baseball, swimming, lacrosse, soccer... to name a few...

EDIT: Sorry, they actually are pretty good at Women's Basketball. My bad.

They are always reeally good at the less popular sports, thats how they make it to the top.
 
Ucla has the most championships in ncaa... 1st to break 100 and I believe stanford has the 2nd most ncaa champs.

what's the primary care ranking based on? How many graduates enter primary care fields?

well that's sort of a misleading stat, people with more money can pay for their school without incurring debt.

Stanford makes an appearance in Men's basketball every now and then, as well. They were a number 1 seed some years ago and used to be a perennial top 4 seed for like, a decade I want to say?
 
quick question: if someone (NOT me) were to subscribe to the US NEWS rankings online (yea, definitely NOT me), would every school get a ranking or is just the top 50-60...one of my good friends (what a loser for looking at them!!!) thumbed through the old US News Medical School Lists (the book type thing that has similar info to the MSAR) at Borders and saw that there was pretty much no ranking lower than 70, with the other schools having no ranking at all...

...I sorta get how they can judge research opportunities (since some schools have more/better and some don't) but every school should have a primary care ranking at least, no?

Ah...stupid friend...making me get on SDN and asking such ridiculous questions.

Well true, but if I recall correctly, the USNews info for indebtedness is for "people who incur debt", as in discounting those who pay their way through. Of course, people might pay for half tuition out of pocket and take out the rest in loans....anyway, merely getting a COA estimate is sort of incomplete, as far as I'm concerned.

Prestige matters at least a LITTLE :/ maybe not to everyone, and it should by no means be anywhere near the top of reasons to attend a medical school, but it does matter. Don't kid yourself.
 
Cleveland, Ohio – After two top-five finishes in women’s basketball and men’s swimming, Stanford extended its lead in the second installment of the winter Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings. The Cardinal have now scored a total of 854.75 points earning 460.75 points this winter alone, the most of any institution.

North Carolina moves up two spots in the standings to second place with a total of 694.25 points. The Tar Heels captured the men’s basketball title and finished 17th in women’s basketball and 26th in men’s swimming.

Third place belongs to Minnesota who moves down from second. The Gophers scored in all three of the most recent championships; finishing 11th in men’s swimming, 17th in women’s basketball and 33rd in men’s basketball to bring their point total to 683.75.

LOL likely all the same. Silly how swimming should count the same as football. So this is an ongoing thing? Because UVA's tennis and lacrosse teams are number 1 now... so I guess we'll get a huge boost at the end?

I'm actually surprised Texas didn't make that list...

Seriously? If you don't care about the rankings, then don't look at them. Go ahead! Nobody is asking you to care about them. But do you really have to be obnoxious and belittle the people that do care about them? They're completely entitled to do it. You go ahead and pick your school based on what you think are worthy criteria, but don't go sh***ing on other people's.

So I guess the answer to your question is that the rankings wouldn't exist if there weren't some people who care about them. Be respectful enough to let them decide for themselves as you, clearly, have decided that they don't matter.

Just saying.

Actually.. this thread has (surprisingly) not devolved into a gush-fest over the US News Top 10 (thank god), or how important rankings are for the most part. Hell we just talked about how SPORTS should add into the equation :laugh:. Relax dude.
 
Hi--i just came across this thread and skimmed through..so somebody said that these are not the real rankings, and I checked on the usnews site and it said it comes out tomorrow..where did whoever posted these get these numbers from?

Are these correct or not?

The rankings are mostly based on research funding, and Davis (don't know about Irvine) isn't that heavily into research as other places.

New buildings don't affect the rankings really, since they are based on research funding, reputation, and selectivity, not the quality of the campus or teaching.

I resent that. Swimming is just as much a sport as football...**** football isnt even an olympic sport, so swimming is more a sport than football😀
 
The primary care list is created by a pretty bs methodology. \It is pretty much exactly the same as the research list with % of the class going into primary care inserted as a score rather than research funding going to the institution. It doesn't actually take reputation as a primary care school into account:

Using that doesn't seem too arbitrary to me. Schools with a primary care focus should be given more points than those without it in these rankings.

Yup, nothing lower than 70, which sucks because that means the majority of the schools aren't ranked. But it does have cool information about most though (e.g. # applied, # interviewed, # accepted, # matriculated, etc...)

I subscribed, because I didn't buy the MSAR (which is a joke). It definitely saved my ass when I was deciding on which schools I wanted to apply to.

Hmm...that's a veyr confusing ranking system...but maybe I am just pooped from work...

It seems like research and primary have some of the same standards (peer assessment, etc) but primary care has an emphasis on how many primary care doctors the school produces, which is weighted at .3

Also it says that 129 schools responded to the questionare, so I don't get why they only rate around 70 schools and the others get N/A?
 
O, and increase the arbitrary factor because IM, peds, etc. are considered primary care when a large number of people wind up specializing. I can tell you at my school, official statistics show ~30% of the class going into primary care. A class survey shows a grand total of 1 person was actually planning on going into primary care (rather than say, cardiology).

Actually they have an awesome swimming program and are pretty good at baseball. Some group puts out a list every year of the best athletics (overall) and Stanford has won something like 10 of the last 15 years.

Thanks for the info (you truly are the wikipedia of SDN)...so it seems if you got accepted to schools that don't get slapped with a rankings you are a) much better off, because you don't have to concern yourself with stupid rankings (which I confess I am having a hard time to put out of my head) and b) your gut feeling/interview impressions/second look experience/$$ will influence your decision (or maybe NIH "rankings", but if you aren't interested in research, those are pretty worthless, too)

Oh well...haha...I'll just resign myself to the fact that I will cough up the damn 15 bucks to look at the damned rankings because I can't pretend that I don't care a little bit...maybe not to make a decision based on them but at least keep them in mind.
