Touro - Cali 2009 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
did he say how many poeple roughly are on the "high alternate list"?

No, he didn't mention that. If I'm not mistaken, they interview roughly 500 students for 100 seats plus 40 spots for the waitlist. I don't know if they evenly divide the 40 into high/mid/low tier waitlist though. I don't think that part of the process was ever explained, maybe because no one asked that day.

I've been living on my nerves since the interview though, so hopefully someone else here can confirm.

Where do get the info 40 spots for waitlist?

At the Q&A session, some students asked about the waitlist. As I remember it, Steve Davis said 40. But again, I could be mistaken.

Hey there everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows how the whole loan situation works? I know that we have to get both Stafford loans and Grad Plus loans, but I am confused as to who is the lender for the Grad Plus loans. Is it Touro or another lender? I already finished all of my necessary paperwork (2009 tax return, FAFSA, entrance counseling, financial aid packet for Touro) and am just waiting on the results.

interviewed on 2/19 and received the acceptance letter today! hadn't received any email replies from Mr. Davis.

hope I can find out about SF before the 20th or else I'm throwing down the 2k$.

If you have to put the 2K but get accepted to UCSF would you still give up your spot? Just out of curiosity I am asking. I have a feeling a few feel that way.

40 seems to not a bad number because some of acceptance people will go to other school. Hope that s.o. will give his/her spot for me. :xf:

I was asked to put down the $2000 for Touro by a deadline but I decided not to even though I wasn't going to find out about UCSD or UCSF weeks later. And I only applied to those three schools. So it all depends on how confident you feel about your chances of other acceptances. If you feel good about your chances, why throw away the $2000?

Hi I have an interview on the this friday 13th..do you have any pointers for me? I really want to go to this school.

I definitely recommend taking a look at the interview feeback section for Touro on this site, it definitely helped me in my interview. Also, make sure when other people are answering questions in your group, to show courtesy and be as attentive as possible to their response.

They won't ask anything too tricky (at least they didn't at my interview). Just know your personal statement well and general things like why pharmacy and why their school, etc.

Good luck!

dont get lost? the island is pretty weird. definitely take a good look at a recent map or directions before going there. lots of closed roads and such.

other than that, it was a pretty chill interview day. i guess make sure you get along with the people in your group, since most of you will be interviewing together.

Can someone explaing to me why Touro can receive federal aid even though they are not fully accredited, but a school like CNCP cannot? I dont think Touro has WASC accreditation either.

Good with anyone who has an interview with Dr. Sperry. You need it.

Thanks for ur reply
I was also wondering about the traffic in the morning. I need to get there before 9 and i will be staying in san pablo at my uncle's place. How early should i leave?

check google maps. theres a traffic option after you set your route in which you can specify certain day of the week at a certain time of day (thursday morning) and it'll give you a rough idea of where if any traffic you'll hit along with projected time.

I think it is because Touro is in "candidate" status and CNCP is in "pre-candidate" status right now.

I think Touro will get "full accreditation" status this June 2009.

Yep yep, and I am stoked to be part of the first class at Touro under the full accreditation status.

So matt48, did you make a decision on what school you are going to attend in the fall?

To be honest I'm praying everynight for the acceptance letter from UCSF... but if it doesn't happen I guess I'll have to choose between UOP and Maryland. It's gonna be a tough choice though since one is an in state + 3 years vs the other more famous reputation but out of state + 4 years...

I would go with the in state 3 year program. Unless you don't mind studying for an extra year.

an extra year means 100k+ as well. put it that way, i think you'd do the 3 year program 🙂

isn't maryland's tuition way cheaper?

then again...3 years sounds sweet.

Has anyone found any good areas for housing? I don't exactly want to live right in Vallejo...

I was searching around on Touro's website and I found the follwing link on their site for student housing. Hope this helps!

I actually drive down there with my bf last week to try and get a feel for the city of Vallejo. I really like these condos on Lighthouse drive (Lighthouse at Bridgepport neightborhood). They are really nice looking and are in a gated community.

I have a friend who's a P1 now and she says a classmate of hers commutes from Fremont. If you're not willing to move, maybe you should talk to her about carpooling or something.

I just had my interview yesterday and if I get in, I'm thinking of finding P1/P2 who want to commute from SF over to Touro also. 🙂

does anyone know how many acceptances they have given out so far?

Does anyone think its worth turning in the supplemental this late? I thought Western was my fall back school but I was placed on active consideration. I didn't bother turning in the supplemental because I prefer to move to southern ca. Now I'm freaking out that I will have to move out of state for pharmacy school. I still have an interview at USC next week, just wondering if they even hold interviews at Touro still.

how far is the commute from san francisco...given the traffic and all?

and i am on the high alternate, does anyone know how many people are on the alternate list...including high, medium, low?

well i got in last october and im going to be turning down my spot (and wasting 2k) since I just got into u of colorado. one more spot for alternates!

Hey hopefully someone can help me. I'm trying to fill out my FAFSA and when I look up the school code for Touro I get the college of Osteopathic medicine, and when I enter the code they have listed on their website I get Touro college in NY. Anyone know the code or am I supposed to just use the Osteopathic medicine one?

They said that on FAFSA the school code would be NY's but the information will go to CA. So don't worry about it.

i drove from SF for my interview on Thursday, left at 7:30 and it took me about 45 minutes. I'm right by Golden Gate Bridge, so I took 101 North to 37 East straight to Mare Island.

I think other people have talked about the alternate list--I didn't get a chance to ask when I was there.

I submitted my supplemental apps last year around this time too and I'm here at Touro. You should definitely turn it in if you don't wanna move out of state!

Is Touro still conducting interviews? If so, what are the dates? Thanks all.

Hi guys,

I have an interview on April, 25th. I feel like I am the last person to be interviewed. People already know they got accepted. I don't know how many seats left but I will try my best to worth my money and my time. I have a quick question for you guys. In the confirm mail, they said that I will be attending a personal intervie at the Touro. I don't know what they meant by "personal interview". Is it sill gonna be the traditional group interview or they personally interview myself? Can someone clarify that ? Thank you.

Also, how would you prepared for the writting section? I just wanted to know what general topic they ask so I can well prepared. Thank you so much for any input!

I am pretty sure that all the interviews conducted at Touro are group interviews and not one-on-one. Also, I am not sure there is really any way to "prepare" for the essay. They just want to see if you can put together a coherent essay with good grammar and such....I really wouldn't stress too much over it 🙂

Yeah, there isn't really a way to prepare for the writing sample. I thought the questions were going to be pharm/health related so I tried to catch up on the news, but my prompts were random! They're just looking for your ability to write at a college level: grammar, spelling, syntax, structure and organization, etc. My advice is to keep track of time (you have 45 minutes) and if you know you're not the best at writing, give yourself a few minutes to scribble an outline.

I believe someone in this thread has an interview early May, actually...

Yeah, I remember hearing that there are interviews all the way up till May.

The interview that I had last week was two faculty and a P3, and a group of 4 of us applicants (there were supposed to be 5, but 3 people didn't show up, so one group had 4 and the other 3).

As for the writing section, the prompts are totally random, so much so that most of us were like "WTF?" when we read the prompt. Considering that we don't know if the same prompts will be given, I don't think it's appropriate to share the actual prompt topics here.

The best way to prepare if you don't feel that you're ready now is to do writing exercises where you give yourself 45 minutes to write on random topics. They're looking for people who can organize their thoughts into a college-level essay: introduction, arguments, then conclusion. Have someone read the posts when you're done to make sure that he or she can understand it.

Hope this helps.

I will most likely also be declining my spot to attend U of Colorado! Still trying to decide if I really want to leave Ca... 😕

I still haven't heard from them. I emailed Julie Lee regarding my status at the end of last week and she hasn't responded yet.

im hoping to get an email invite from them too.

If I don't hear from Julie by the end of this week, then I'm going to call them to check on my status. Yea, Touro is my only school left with hope to stay here in CA.

is it okay to do that? i didnt wanna seem like im rushing them for an answer or in this case, a verdict...

Good luck to those who are still waiting! I really liked this school and the faculty members that I met when I interviewed there.

i don't know when it will be the good time to look for a place near the campus
😕

I felt my interviewers were grilling me! 😳 But I remained calm (on the outside) and gave it all I got...still surprised to receive my acceptance a week or two later though. 😛

Just found out I got accepted to Touro (literally, like 5 minutes ago). Now just have to wait on one more school to make my final decision...😀
