Still deciding between these two. Which would you pick and why? I was set on Touro-NV but then MUCOM called. I'm indifferent on location and facilities and more interested in which school would offer better clerkship opportunities. I searched and haven't been able to find any detail on the quality of rotation sites at Touro-NV and with MUCOM haven't even having had 3rd or 4th year students its also extremely hard to gauge the quality. So I'm just looking for some outside views to decide where to go. Thanks for any input!

Lol first and foremost where are you from and what are your finances like? Have you been to Vegas before? If finances guide your decision go Touro hands down.

Just wondering, why would Touro be the financially wise decision? The estimated cost of living according to the CIB is sky high at 37k. Not quite sure how accurate that is though.

Are you looking at the right touro? That number is inflated like implants. Henderson aka the foreclosure capital of the world is quite cheap

No joke, page 87 of 2016 CIB. I completely believe you and I'm clueless as to why they listed such a high number.

from michigan ... finances (<$50k diff) and location i could care less about ... i just want the best education

Having attended touro for the past three years I can attest to going there. If you have any specific questions PM me. My peers feel the same.

In addition, southern Nevada will be getting two MD schools in the area which will cause difficulties in gaining rotation sites. Something to keep in mind.

Touro-NV

Disclaimer: I'm headed to MUCOM in the fall 😀 I think that MUCOM will have awesome rotation sites for its students. Its in Indianapolis, which is a medical hub and Indiana only has 1 other med school (IU). Additionally, the last 2.5 months of the MS2 spring semester you only take an Integrative course which preps you for clerkships and boards by reviewing all pre-clinical material. In addition, there are 4 weeks after school to continue to prepare for boards. So you have ~3 months to study for the COMLEX (and USMLE if you so choose). Hopefully a second year can specify exactly how the last 3 months work with the Integrative class. But, like others have said, the school is only 2 years old so take that how you may. Just thought I would give MUCOM some love.

I actually thought that Touro-NV was more expensive based on their cost of attendance. Do you think the numbers for cost of living are inflated? Even if they are, I still find it hard to believe Touro-NV is cheaper.

MUCOM

I still agree that Touro-NV is the better choice since it is already established.

The COA is probably inflated, my wife lived in Vegas for years and always talked about how cheap it was to live out there.

They must assume no one can resist the urge to blow some cash on The Strip it something. Vegas is cheap as hell. That climate tho... Last time I visited it was over 110 degrees during the day, it was miserable.

Rebooting this thread: I'm in the same position considering MUCOM vs TUNCOM.

Changes since the OP posted last year though
: TUNCOM now has a new dean (formerly of KCUMB) who seems to be implementing some great new programs: all of 4th year are electives, an "honors" track for students doing well who think they may want to go into a competitive specialty (gets you into that specialty earlier than otherwise would happen), movement towards a systems-based curriculum (which MUCOM already has, and I think I'd like).

My primary concerns are solid rotations (per a friend at TUNCOM, lack of inpatient/ward rotations is the biggest con experienced) and being somewhere that supports me and sets me up for success in a competitive specialty if I choose to pursue one. Primary care is obviously important, but I don't want to feel like I don't have the administration's support if I feel a specialty is what I want to do.

Both are similar in cost and a plane ride from home. I just want to put myself on the best possible path to get the highest quality education I can!
