TOUROCOM NY Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interviewed on 11/17 and saw that little white envelope today! It was an acceptance letter attached with the deposit form dated 11/18. I could hardly believe it. Good luck to all the other applicants!

Yeah told me to talk to issa too. when i spoke with him, he told me mr joseph perez (the DOA) is the only one that discuss the matter w/ me. Of course he wasnt there. I was able to speak w/ him once, and i was brushed off w/ the holiday/deans out of office excuses

When you call, enter the extension for Mr. Perez. I spoke to him today. Good luck with this school and with your other interviews!

Thanks. I appreciate it. I just have bad luck. I tried 3 or 4 times today and didn't get a hold of him. I'm not gonna sit there calling every 5 minutes to find him. If I didn't have to wait 7 weeks (and counting) to get a decision, I wouldn't have to stalk him lol. I called yesterday, left a message and didn't get a call back. I don't what else to do at this point. You'd would think me and others in this same position are entitled to an official decision in a reasonable amount of time. Not left to assume we've been rejected. I'm happy for everyone that gets accepted, but by no means do I believe its fair for a school send out decisions to some people that interviewed 6 weeks after others who are still waiting.

I really feel for you Boss. If you haven't heard from Perez by Wed. of next week, I will be seeing him as I will be giving a tour that day to the interviewees and I will pull him aside and try to find out what's up.

Quick question: what are the grades given for clerkships? ie Honors, Pass, etc?

How long does it take to get a secondary here? My AACOMAS app has been complete for over 2 months and this is the only school I haven't heard from them. Is this a school where it's basically secondary = interview?

This used to be the case, but I am not so sure it is anymore.

Thanks, I finally spoke with him today. He told me I was wait-listed and I should get the letter soon. At least I know where I stand.

I've been rooting for you! I'm glad you at least have an answer now, and hopefully it will turn into an acceptance. Were you given any explanation as to why it took them so long to get back to you?

No, i wasn't told why. I didnt want to ask. I'm just happy to finally know. Uncertainty sucks. At least the wait-list is ranked based on when you get placed on it as opposed to stats. I think they just started wait-listing people so I should be high up there.

Well, I guess posting on this thread helps more than calling. I just got a secondary invite today in the email. I was complete 10/6.

Since it's already November 23rd, what are my chances if I fill the secondary out? $100 misspent could have helped a lot during the holidays...

Edit: OMG it's $200. Even more pertinent now. I have two different interviews scheduled in the next couple of weeks, too.

I received my secondary on 11/9, the school received it on 11/15, and I got an interview invite on 11/17, so they were pretty quick in responding.

Also, there were 6 total interview dates to choose from (2 in Jan and 4 in Feb) so I'm pretty sure we'll be interviewing for more than just a waitlist spot.

It all depends--I was complete in august and just got the interview invite a few days ago for the same spots. My mcat bio is a 9 though so that may be a reason for the delay. Regardless I declined; however, I would have went if I was invited earlier.

I have a 25 (9B 8P 8V). What's wrong with a 9 bio?

Nothing, but apparently its the most heavily weighted section at Touro. This was told to the early interviewees. I would imagine that most people who interviewed already had 10+.

I had a 12 on my Bio section - maybe that's why I got an interview invite 2 days after they received it?

Either way, I think it's probably worth a shot.

For what its worth, I got a 9 on my Bio section and received an interview. However my new scores came in after my interview and i bumped it up to 10, and I was waitlisted. Stats are only part of the story.

Got an 11 on bio and got wait listed, so I feel you on that one, lol

Congrats. I think it was your stellar performance during the clicker section that did it 😉 lol

Yay 🙂 congrats D724. All 11/17 interviewees should add each other on fb. I didn't do all that work for nothing

does anyone know if ppl off the waitlist can be selected earlier than the traditional time (may)??

A BIG CONGRATS and HUG to all the 11/17 ers who got accepted!!

I guess so. I hope they start pulling people off the list earlier than May too. In perfect world people not interested in attending Touro will tell them as soon as they are sure of it.

Reading last years post many things have changed in their process.

Are there any current Canadian Touro students out there? Or does anyone know how I could talk to one?

finally got an interview, but declined. Hopefully someone else gets this spot. I honestly don't know why it took so long. I had already been interviewed and accepted at 3 schools.

back in my day schools help interviews through the start of April. I have no clue why everyone is saying that not having one by dec 1st is a big deal. Could the world have changed that much in 3 years or are we all so impatient now that we want the admission cycle to be 2 months long (oct and nov).

Most MD school classes are filled by the end of December/January. Having an allopathic january or later interview is getting confused with having an osteopathic january or later interview. Touro is not that in demand that it's entire class will be filled even by the end of february.

I have been accepted to NSU-COM and WVSOM as well, and wanted some insight onto Touro's pros and cons. I'm from NJ so I am somewhat familiar with the area (especially the many NJ rotation sites). I just want to know if these hospitals offer good education during rotations. Also, if anyone can list pros cons for this school it would help a lot, just about how good and friendly the professors are, what teaching style is used and anything else that will tell me more about the school. If anyone has a match list please share if you dont mind! Thanks.

Please hold, Doc E will be with you shortly.

go through the pages in this thread. all of your questions are answered there (summary of rotation sites, match list, current curriculum, etc.)

If you want to stay in the NJ area then touroCOM may be a good choice for you (unless you get into UMDNJ). If you don't mind where you go take a look at NSU.

anyone know when classes start?

anyone know when classes start?

Unfortunately, we won't know that until the summer. There's a lot of holidays they have to plan around. This year we started August 1st, and the year before they started mid July.

12/14/11 interview cancelled... Just sent an email, so the spot will probably open up tomorrow if someone wants it! Good luck 🙂

Hey Guys- I am interviewing here this week. Can anyone who interviewed this year post some more specific interview example questions? Thanks!

Multiple experiences previously posted.

I know, I have read all of them but some of the other forums are much more specific about actual questions asked so just thought I would throw it out there. If anyone has more helpful info that would be great.

Tell me about yourself (then asked more questions about the things I mentioned).
Why medicine?
Why Touro? This turned into talking about healthcare in Harlem and in the US.
What questions do you have for us?

Pretty basic stuff. Most of the conversation spun off things that I said about myself. Overall, I thought it was pretty relaxed and I actually enjoyed talking to the interviewers. GL!

so... just looking from the google streetview, I can't seem to find the actual entrance to the main building. any directional tip from those that have already visited?

I dropped in on TOUROCOM over Thanksgiving and got a brief walk around the school. It's New York City, you're not going to have a traditional front gate. The entire program is split between two buildings--an administrative building, and the academic building a block away. From the exterior, the school is not pretty. The facilities inside are pretty nice, with 24-hour access to study rooms with TVs and white boards, a nice cafeteria/snack bar, a 24-hour access gym with showers (that about six students were actively using when I visited during the school day), nice laboratory space, and a pair of the typical large, graded, wired lecture halls like any other medical school.

Since they just graduated their first class into residency, all of the facilities and technologies are fairly new. Many of the faculty and administrators are fairly new as well, which has its benefits and its obvious reasons for concern. The students seemed happy and relaxed though, and I saw more laughing and smiles from students on my brief walk-through than I did at other schools. I don't think I will end up at TOURO NY, but it wouldn't be a bad place to study.

That's my two cents.

When I selected my date, it took them 5 hours to respond to me. Good luck

(And as a comment on what perpetual said, the buildings are on the same block, they're around the corner from one another) It is not the entrance that has the giant TOUROCOM logo next to it, that is the school. You will initially need to go to the administrative office which is at 2090 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, right next to White Castle. It is a multi-story office building. You'll go to the 5th floor and then turn L. There will be a security guard there that you'll let know that you're there for an interview. They should tell you where to go from there. If not, it's just up the hall on the R- a conference room where you'll sit with the rest of the interviewees and get some initial information. They've changed the rest of the format since last year so I'm not sure after that.

haha thanks for the help with the directions!

I just interviewed today and I'm totally sold! Loved the people there, all the students seemed really happy with the education they were getting, the new facilities were really nice, a bunch of people were talking about how great last year's class matched, how pretty much every aspect of the curriculum is tailored to have students perform well on the boards, how you're not competing against your classmates but rather the year ahead of you, and how they're gearing up/aiming to have touro do a lot of moving with regards to school ranking.

After tomorrow's group of interviews, they're going to deliberate and let us know our outcome within 2 weeks! :xf:
