Hey everyone,

First a little background: I decided way late into the application cycle for this year's match that IM is what I wanted to do. As a consequence, I couldn't get my IM letters and personal statement in on time to ERAS, so I applied to transitional year residencies and matched.

So...seeing how my sub-I experience in IM is pretty limited, should I try and do one during my transitional year residency? My program said they would allow me to leave for one of my elective months. Specifically, since I do not have any LORs from PDs at IM residencies (my program does not have IM), should I do it for this reason as well? The problem is, I think most programs don't even allow interns from different programs to do electives at their programs? True?

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks!

You will be unlikely to get a ward/ICU month as an away elective at an IM program. I assume your TY has actual IM physicians though, right? And an IM chair at the hospital, correct? Those are the people to get letters from.

If you want to do an away elective, do something like Pulm, Hem/Onc or Cards where you could potentially get some ward-like experience.

Agree w/above. Find an internist(s) at your transitional year and kiss up to them. Find the one who will write the best letter (needs to be reasonably well spoken, likes you and it wouldn't hurt if he/she has some academic connections).
