I am curious-when talking about residency, what exactly is a "transitional year" or "preliminary" residency?

It's needed to fullfill a clinical year requirement in specialties like radiology, anesthesiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, PM&R (ie transitioning into...). A transitional year is sorta like the DO's rotating internship, a prelim medicine or surgery year is like the first year of medicine or surgery, but then you split off into a different branch of medicine.
