So I'm a runner, and occasionally I get hurt. I got a book on trigger point therapy and have used it to some effect. Massaging certain areas seems to help my injuries. I've heard that some doctors consider this to be nonsense, naturalistic healing.

What's the common wisdom here? Will I look like an idiot if I ask about them in my physiology class?

Who cares.

I have chronic lat soreness and it helps. Do what makes you feel better.

I'd hope they wouldn't scoff at you! Myofascial release, strain/counter strain, soft tissue mobs, and other manual therapy techniques are taught at colleges/universities around the nation in physical therapy and athletic training programs!

And, dare I say it...

COLLEGES OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE.

Now, we can all stop believing in these common modalities between DPTs and DOs.

The last FM rotation I was on I saw several patients with trigger points. We injected all of them with lido. The patients were refractory to most other treatments. The stuff works.

Myofascial release/lido injections/trigger point therapy changed my life dramatically for the better when I was similarly refractory to everything else (mostly medications) countless MDs had offered. It was worth so much that i paid out-of-pocket 200$ a visit until my partner learned to do it for me. It's time for that to be moved out of the "alternative therapies" category and into the mainstream -- not everything alternative is a scam.

If that's what DO manual manipulation consists of, then we are missing out on a valuable tool in MD education.
