TUCOM-CA Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd check with Touro to make sure everything you have is in..

Highwaitlisted. Interviewed on 2/28.

I will be withdrawing my application because of an acceptance to Western/COMP! 😀

Just wanted to give an update about what Dr. Haight mentioned during our interview. He said that they were still in Phase 1 (which means that the admissions committee theoretically could admit everyone they interviewed if they wanted to). Not sure how much longer they will be in phase 1, but goodluck to everyone who is interviewing soon! Touro was a great campus and it felt like the staff really cared about the students.

And those who also interviewed with me on 2/28, good luck with everything! I had an awesome time with you all!

Hey! I was also at the 2/28 interview.. congrats on your acceptance!! 🙂

I can second the update JCPL provided. I really enjoyed my visit there and the interview experience was really engaging and informative. The questions were challenging and the panel experience was somewhat intimidating, but it's designed to see how students respond under pressure before their colleagues. As an additional note, I particularly liked how involved the med schools students were during the interview process and tour. It shows that their students are expected to be role models and educators as well.

Unfortunately, I did not get accepted and will have to wait it out :'( But this is still a great school and I'm staying hopeful.

Would anyone who got waitlisted recently mind sharing their stats? You can PM me if you want.

Graduated from UCSD with degree in Human Biology
Cumulative GPA: 3.71
sciGPA: 3.78
MCAT: 31R (9 PS, 10 VR, 12 BS)

I had decent ECs with alot of research and alot of international work.

Honestly after interviewing and spending a day with the staff they aren't so focused on stats as other schools. They really want students who fit into their program really well, and can communicate their thoughts effectively. If you're interviewing definitely mention OMM (I think that is what killed me) because Touro has one of the best OMM programs (according to the student tour guide) in the nation and they are really proud of it. If you have any other questions or anything like that feel free to message me! I'll give you all the info you can handle!

I received an email on March 1st asking to call Touro back within two weeks to schedule an interview date. Does anyone know how many more spots are left? They say that they interview till mid-april.

Hey OceanBreath!

I'll be withdrawing my app so hopefully that will help out a bit! But yeah don't lose hope! =) I'm sure you will make an awesome physician no matter where you at! Best of luck with everything this year!

Interviewed today 3/6. Big thanks to the no shows on interview day, you made our panel only 3 students which meant we each had plenty of time to talk. Dr. Haight said they were all in the first phase of the process still but wouldn't be for long.

Hey when did you submit your primary and secondary? Thanks.

I have an interview at the end of march. Does anyone know how many spots are still open?

Hey when did you guys finish submitting all your materials? Thanks.

I interviewed on 2/28 and Dr. Haight said they were still in phase 1, and according to an earlier post above it looks like they were still phase 1 as of 3/6. Not sure how much longer they will be in phase 1, but Dr. Haight did mention that they never interview for waitlist spots. So you definitely do have a chance still!

With that said just do your best! Relax and be yourself. The panel interview can be slightly intimidating, but if you have any questions go ahead and PM and I'll see what I can do to help out. Good luck! 🙂

Hey when did you guys finish submitting all your materials? Thanks.

I submitted my application with all of the secondary materials in early December and my file was complete and ready for review on December 27th. I received an interview invitation in early February and interviewed on 2/28.

Thanks buddy, very helpful. I forget if you posted yet, but congratulations for completing everything and interviewing. Good luck.

what is phase 1?

Accepted! Interviewed this week. Good luck to everyone still on the wait list and interviewing soon.

Im in! Interviewed monday, accepted today! Much more impressed with Touro treating applicants like humans than Davis' five month wait with no news post interview. See you there! 🙂

what is phase 1?

TUCOM's admissions committee meets every 2 weeks and in those 2 weeks there are usually 4 groups of students that have been interviewed (totaling around 40 interviewees give or take). Phase 1 means that theoretically there is still enough room in the class where the ADCOM is allowed to admit all 40 students if they want to. Whereas, if they switch to phase 2 they will start rationing out spots. ie: Dr. Haight will tell the ADCOM you can only accept 20 students (this is a made up number, not sure of the actual number). Thus you have a better shot at being accepted in phase 1 vs. phase 2.

Hopefully some of the people who recently interviewed can chime in and let us know if they are still in phase 1 or if they've moved onto phase 2.

Congratulations to you as well! 👍

Hello all! Just signed up on SDN today, and this is my first post😀 This is my first choice school, and I am still hoping to get an interview. I've been complete since September and am still on a pre-interview hold at four schools. 😳 Here's to hope and perseverance.

Would you acceptees mind sharing some stats for the rest of us still longing for the dream? Thanks. Congrats!

I will be atteniding Touro this fall and was wondering where most people live. I have a husband and a baby boy so if anyone could help us out with some suggestions for somewhat decent and possibly inexpensive areas to live that would be super helpful!

Hi everybody,

Does anyone know of a thread in regards to the Touro CA MSPAS/MPH program? Ive tried to look but cant find anything. Thanks!! 🙂

Can anyone tell me why Touro-CA would be a better pick compared to A.T. Still SOMA?

Does anyone know how many seats are left this year? thnx!!

For what it's worth, Monday's interview group was told they are still in phase 1, which means if they want you, there is a seat available. Phase 2 is when they start "rationing" seats and being more selective. We were also told that Touro typically runs later than other schools in filling their seats b/c they observe so many holidays throughout the year. I know this stuff drives people batty, but that's what we were told. Good luck all!

I grew up in Marin county, which is about 30 mins southwest. I highly recommend living there. It's hard to find a bad city. Novato, san Rafael, Terra Linda, all great places to live. I'm attending touro this fall as well. Very excited.

Anyone interview recently (within the last 3-4 weeks) and recived a response yet, either yay, nay or wait? :luck:

When does the wait-list start moving? Anyone know?

Hey guys, I'm thinking of applying next cycle, although my GPA with grade replacement is very low: both 3.0 and I have a 31Q with decent extracurriculars. What do you think my chances are at Touro?

In my humble opinion, your MCAT is excellent. Your GPA is not as low as you may think. Diversify your ECs as much as possible, and secure a couple of great LORs. Also, if possible, I suggest that you get into some sort of scientific research lab.

Also, if you're thinking about Touro CA, look into Touro-Nevada. I won't gossip about Touro CA. Instead, I will tell you this: As soon as the interview day was over at CA, I immediately knew I would not be going there. When I got accepted, it was the most empowering feeling in the world to turn them down. And being accepted to other great programs, DO and MD, I don't regret it one bit. But whatever is best for you, I wish you the best of luck my friend. Please take care.

Hey all, interviewed today. No ethical questions, kind of strange.

And apparently Touro is STILL in Phase 1.

When does the wait-list start moving? Anyone know?

Dean Haight mentioned after the interview that review of wait-listed candidates would begin in June.

Been following this tread but haven't posted much. I know it's a long shot but by any chance anyone know if they are still giving out interview invites? This is my #1 choice and I am bummed that I still have not received an invite. I feel so defeated today.... 🙁

I feel ya, brother... To answer your question, though, I contacted Dr. Haight and he let me know they are interviewing up through May 22. Keep the faith!

I'm in the same boat man, as the previous post said, keep the faith!

My husband received an interview invite just last week for the middle of April, and he has been complete since the begining of the year, so chances look good in your favor 🙂 good luck; I'm sure something will come of it....

Congratulations to your husband! But just to clarify, he's been complete since the beginning of January, or beginning of the application year?

Thanks for sharing. Congrats to him. If May 22nd is the last day, then there are 14 interview dates left (but I believe Touro's spring break is next week, so take away 2 days leaving 12). At approximately 10 people per interview day, that comes out to able 120 interview spots left as of today? Please correct me if my approximation is off.

Here's a pick me up for those in my boat: http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/13-simple-steps-to-get-you-through-a-rough-day Good luck all.

Thanks Marissa123 (like I had anything to do with it 😉 ) He applied to TUCOM-CA REALLY late, like in Feb of this year (2012) and then sent in his secondaries in March 2012. So WAY after the beggining of the application year for 2013 matriculation.

I interviewed on 3/20 and got an acceptance email (I had indicated to Dr. Haight that I would like to receive it this way) on Monday afternoon (4/2). Good luck!

Congrats Benzene29! Will you be attending TUCOM-CA then?

Any acceptees willing to chat about your stats and/or background information via pm? Thanks. Congrats!

Thank you! Still waiting to hear back from some other schools that I interviewed at, so we will see. I am really excited about Touro-CA though if that's where I end up for sure. Good luck to your husband!
