Any recommendation on laptops? The thing I am concern about is the laptop's lcd screen. Most of the laptops in Fry's Electronics and Bestbuy are HP, Toshiba, and Sony. These laptops' LCD uses "xtra brite" coating which makes the LCD appear glossy and reflects light (especially fluorescent light)like a mirror. I think the light reflection is an unintended side effect of the coating because it really strains a person's eyes if he or she looks at it for more than 30 minutes. Thus, I am looking at the Dell Duo Core (unfortunately, the Duo Core 2 is not available yet) laptop as a possible solution. Do you guys think that XGA resolution is okay or should I go for SXGA (UXGA is too fine, the text at normal font size can be too difficult to read)?

I really appreciate your guys advices. 😀

OK, first... laptops... I agree about the glossy screens. I have not heard about eye strain from using them from the many of my classmates that have them. I went with a Dell Inspiron B130 and upgraded the hell out of it, giving me an affordable monster. I would say that you should go to the store and try one, but your time is running out... School starts on Monday and you should have the laptop for class on Thursday. I like the wide screen because it allows me to place my notes next to the PowerPoint slide for studying purposes... also you can surf the web while following along the power points... but I didn't tell you that... Just get one that fits you... meets the minimum requirements and is cheep enough that you don't mind moving it around with you.

Housing,

I was checking out the local home price around Touro University. The average price for a condo/townhouse or a small single family home is about $270K and 330K, respectively. Do you guys think buying a home around Touro Univeristy is a worthwhile investment considering the average home price went from 130K in 2000 to 290K in 2005?

I really appreciate your guys advices. 😀

Next... housing... again I have to remind you that you are starting school on Monday! Not a lot of time to buy a house... and you will have very little time to look around for one when school starts. I agree again, the housing market is a bit scary here, but that being said, some of my classmates are still buying... and building new homes in the area. The best advice I can give you is to move here first, get the feel for the area (places you like, places you wouldn't drive in at night...etc). I was in the housing market just before my first year at Touro, but let’s just say things didn't work out... I call it fate. Now, I have decided to keep my interests mobile so that I can be free to train around the country.

Books,

I searched for the required textbooks on Amazon. I discovered that most of the reviewers recommended other books such as physiology for board review, illustrated biochemistry, and netter's atlas. Is it okay that I purchase other textbooks in lieu of the required textbooks. Are there any books that I should hold off buying?

I really appreciate your guys advices. 😀

And lastly... books... I just want to mention one more time that you start school Monday. If you haven't ordered your books yet, I would first get all your Anatomy books and then get your Biochem book (UPS OVERNIGHT). Next, I would get your OMM books, histo workbook and the BRS physiology (never used the text book, but the BRS is a gem). You will not need your Neuro now if ever, but I would also get the Bates "Guide to Physical Exams..." because PD will use this book from time to time.

Hope this helped,
B

Hi guys,

Do we really need a cardiology stethoscope? I am asking this question because someone is going to give me a Littmann classic II SE stethoscope which is decent but not cardiology grade. Anyway, I have asked several doctors about stethoscope. Their general opinion is that med school students just need a decent stethoscope because 1) stethoscopes have tendency to "disappear" (somebody inadvertently takes yours) and 2) a cardiology grade stethoscope is an overkill for most med students.

Do you prefer a tunable stethoscpe (changing contact pressure to listen high and low frequency sounds) or a traditional two-sides stethoscope (must turnover the chestpiece to listen different frequency sounds) ?

What is your opinion on DRG puretone stethoscopes According DRG advertisements, it uses patented ENR (external nosie reduction, developed by Bose--a maker of high quality sound systems) tube technology to deliever clear sound.

Switching to a different topic.
According to Bryan, a Touro MI 2nd year med student, he said that 1st year students should wait until their 2nd semester to purchase an otoscope and an ophthalmoscope. Should Touro NV 1st year med students hold off their med equipment purchases as well?

If you're getting a stethoscope for free, by all means accept it. It is not at all necessary to get a great one. Just accept the Littman classic II SE. It'll do the job.

As for the oto/ophthalmoscope, you can probably find someone to share it. I bought my my own since I didn't know anyone and if I wanted to practice on family and friends, I could just pull my own set out. I didn't want to be dependent on another person bringing their equipment. If you buy, just get the cheaper stuff, or you could find a 2nd or 3rd year who wants to sell theirs.

Appologies. No trouble with car parking here. I'm actually a bit impressed.
Definitely look into this place. I'm happy with my choice. 😀

Just curious if everyone could give me some cons of the school. So far, it is my #1 choice, but I could use plenty of info. Thanks. 👍

I am coming to Touro NV for PA interview next month. I just don't know how to reach current PA students before I come. Does any one know how? Thanks

I have a thread up on the matter but, since no one seems to be catching it.

I'm looking to contact a buddy of mine from college who is now a part of the 2010 class at Touro-NV. Please PM me.
